  • 3、Do you have those days when you say to yourself "I don't need school" or when you just can't find the motivation to pay attention in school or get your homework done? Here are some tips to keep yourself motivated in school so that you can succeed and achieve your goals.

Set concrete academic goals. If you just want to "do better" in school, does that mean an A? Or a B? Are you just trying to pass? Sit down and set specific benchmarks for yourself. You might say you want to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, or that you want to get at least an A — in history this year.

Study efficiently. Avoid cramming and focus on creating your own understanding. It's easy to just sit in front of your book and read passively without really absorbing the information. If you find it most efficient to focus on one subject at a time, do that. If bouncing between a few similar subjects helps you stay on task, that's fine, too.

This will help you commit the material to memory. It's better to spend 10-15 minutes studying every night than to try and stuff everything into one study session the night before the big test. Research has shown that stuffing is one of the least efficient ways to prepare for a test, so avoid it at all costs.

Take care of your body. Get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly. You cannot stay motivated if you're so physically under the weather that your body can't focus. Get 8 hours of sleep — especially on school nights.

    A. Stay focused with mindfulness tricks.

    B. Study in a way that makes the most sense to you.

    C. It's easier to stay motivated if you have specific goals.

    D. Review everything you learned at the end of each study session.

    E. It's a lot easier to stay motivated if you know you're going to relax eventually.

    F. Eat a diverse, healthy diet and get plenty of physical activity to ensure you' re in tip-top shape.

    G. You're not alone, but doing well in school will set you up to have the life you want down the road.

  • 4、Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide and is associated with disruptions to several brain and psychological processes, including impaired learning and memory. Physical activity, especially aerobic (有氧的) exercise, has been found to reduce depressive symptoms, but until now the processes behind this have been poorly understood.

In a new review article published in Translational Psychiatry, researchers propose a novel assumption to understand the antidepressant effects of exercise. They believe that the process may hinge on motivation, which is very important for relieving a number of symptoms of depression, such as anhedonia (a lack of interest or joy in life's experiences), low energy and "brain fog".

The team summarised research papers exploring the mechanisms (机制) of depression in both humans and animals and concluded that depression, especially anhedonia, is associated with increased inflammation (炎症) caused by the body's immune response. Importantly, inflammation is also linked to disrupting dopamine transmission. These biological changes may represent key processes leading to changes in motivation, and in particular a lower willingness to make physical or mental effort.

Meanwhile, exercise reduces inflammation, boosts dopamine function, and enhances motivation. The researchers believe that this could be an important reason as to why exercise has an antidepressant effect. The team hope that this understanding of how exercise reduces symptoms of depression will help to inform the development of new treatment strategies— such as personalised exercise programmes.

Dr Emily Hird (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience) said, "Understanding the mechanisms behind the antidepressant effects of physical activity in depression could also inform our understanding of the mechanisms causing depression and the development of novel intervention strategies, in particular, personalised intervention, and social prescribing."

"It would be important to investigate any potential barrier to exercise," Dr Hird added. "Addressing barriers to exercise— particularly in people with depression— is crucial, as regular physical activity may be able to relieve symptoms, enhance mood and empower individuals on their path to recovery. As part of this, finding strategies to encourage exercise is key."

(1)、What is the impact of depression worldwide?
A、It is the most widespread illness. B、It is the leading cause of death. C、It leads to high rate of disability. D、It becomes the focus of health.
(2)、Which can best replace the underlined part "hinge on" in paragraph 2?
    A、work on B、depend on C、put on D、get on
(3)、What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A、The reasons behind depression. B、The consequences of inflammation. C、The way the body's immune system response. D、The main point of the research team.
(4)、What does Dr Hird stress in the last paragraph?
A、Barriers to taking aerobic exercise. B、The importance of aerobic exercise. C、Paths to recovery from depression. D、Proper methods of encouraging exercise.
  • 5、Facial expressions are an important part of human communication that allow us to convey our emotions. Scientists have found similar signals of emotion in other mammals such as dogs, pigs and mice. Although birds can produce facial expressions by moving their head feathers and flushing (发红) their skin, it is unclear whether they express emotions in this way.

To investigate, researchers from INRAE and CNRS, France, filmed 18 female domestic chickens from two breeds, as they performed routine behaviors on a French farm. They also filmed the birds while being captured and held by a human, and while being rewarded with an appealing food.

The researchers analyzed the position of their facial feathers and the color of the exposed skin on their faces in seven contexts that differed in their emotional valence (效价) and level of excitement. For example, birds preen their feathers when they are relaxed and content, whereas receiving a rewarding food generally causes excitement and happiness, and being captured is an exciting but fearful experience.

The results suggested that the position of the head feathers and the color of the skin varied between contexts. Fluffing (抖松) head feathers were mainly associated with a state of contentment, whereas flushing indicated that the birds were positively excited or fearful.

The study is the first to investigate facial displays of emotion in chickens, and suggests that domestic hens use facial expressions to show their emotions, much like humans and other mammals do. These findings offer a window into the emotional experiences of domestic birds, which could be used to improve the welfare of farmed poultry (家禽), the researchers say.

The skin flushing on the face of the domestic birds is a window into their emotions. The intensity of the flushing varies within a few seconds depending on the emotional situations they experience, the researchers add.

(1)、What were the researchers trying to understand about chickens?
A、Why they move their head feathers. B、How their faces show their emotions. C、How they communicate with humans. D、What they need to eat to stay healthy.
(2)、Why did the researchers film the chickens in various situations?
A、To record their daily activities. B、To check the impact of weather. C、To compare them with mammals. D、To observe their emotional responses.
(3)、In which case will a hen fluff its head feathers?
    A、When it's satisfied. B、When it's fearful. C、When it's tired. D、When it's excited.
(4)、What field might the research be applied to?
    A、Psychology. B、Biology. C、Agriculture. D、Communication.
  • 6、Nearly three decades ago, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastiāo returned from his assignment in East Africa, shocked to find his family's once booming cattle farm had become almost a wasteland. His wife, Lelia, equally heartbroken by the destruction of the once- vibrant (充满生机的) land, proposed an idea that seemed almost as enormous and impossible as the barrenness (荒芜) before them— replant the forest.

In 1998, embracing the challenge with determination and a deep-seated desire to revive a crucial part of their country and family history, Sebastiāo and Lelia established the Instituto Terra, an environmental group dedicated to the sustainability of the Valley of the River Doce. It became a ship through which they would sail on a difficult journey to heal the land and in many ways, themselves.

The couple, along with their team, embarked on a journey to replant and rebuild the1,754-acre plot of land. Slowly, the barren desert that Sebastiāo returned to began to transform, was blossoming into the lush paradise that had once existed only in his memories.

Now, the region stands as a testament to what can be achieved with dedication and a dream. It is recognized as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve, a sanctuary where nature has been given the space and support to reclaim its rightful place.

The once-barren cattle farm is not only thriving but has also become a shelter for hundreds of species of animals and plants. The land, now vibrant and alive, hosts 293 species of trees, 172 species of birds, 33 species of mammals, and 15 species of reptiles and amphibians, many of which are endangered and have found a safe refuge in this refreshed environment.

Sebastiāo reflects on the transformation, sharing, "All the insects and birds and fish returned, and, thanks to this increase of the trees, I, too, was reborn— this was the most important moment."

(1)、How was the farm when Sebastia o returned from East Africa?
A、Vibrant and alive. B、Messy and noisy. C、Overgrown and enormous. D、Barren and deserted.
(2)、How did Sebastiāo and Lelia deal with the challenge facing them?
A、Through a ship journey. B、Through team effort. C、Through government support. D、Through social donation.
(3)、What do the figures in paragraph 5 indicate?
A、The success of the couple's work. B、The species the couple hope to save. C、The original state of the cattle farm. D、The number of wildlife in need of help.
(4)、What can we learn from Sebastiāo's story?
A、Bad luck often brings good luck. B、The early bird catches the worm. C、Where there's a will, there's a way. D、What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Lucy opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the field below. "No!" she cried, now fully awake. Maya, the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊花田).

"I must have forgotten to close the gate last night," Lucy thought as she pulled a shirt over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week. But Maya was eating the flowers.

Lucy hurried outside and grabbed (抓) the lead rope hanging on the door. "Why can't you stay in the field?" she called to Maya as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch. Maya didn't listen. She just stood in the patch eating the beautiful flowers. "When I grow up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day," Lucy thought. "I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble."

Just as Lucy was about to put the lead rope around Maya's neck, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. The cow couldn't stand Red. She took off, running through the daisies and across the yard. Lucy tried to stop Maya, but the cow was too fast. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

"Thank goodness!" Lucy said as she closed the gate and tightened the latch (插紧门闩). She turned to look at the flower garden. What a mess! Half of the daisies were either eaten or stepped on.

Hearing the noise, Mama came out of the house. "What's going on?" she asked. She looked sadly at her garden. "I forgot to lock the gate and Maya ran in," Lucy said. "I'm so sorry, Mama." "I know you are." Mama walked up to Lucy and gave her a hug (拥抱). "You learned an important lesson today."

Lucy's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother. A painting on the wall caught Lucy's eye. "That's it," she smiled.

  • 12、Studying longer does not necessarily mean studying better. Below are some great ways of learning as much as you can without getting too stressed.

Find the right place to study.

The first thing you need to do is avoid distractions (分散注意力的事物) while studying. You should keep away from television sets and phone calls. Get all of your study materials together, so you will not be interrupted in the middle of your session.

Break down the tasks into smaller parts.

When you have gotten everything ready, list the items you need to study, and arrange them across several hours or days, depending on how big your load is. As a general rule, assign (分配) at least one hour to each subject. By doing this, you will be able to know more easily how long you need for each topic.

    Schedule study breaks.

When you have listed all of your tasks and made a schedule, you should arrange study breaks. This will give your eyes some time to rest, and yourself a chance to go to the bathroom or have some coffee. Scheduled breaks will reduce the need for you to interrupt yourself to the lowest level during the study session.

Put your tasks in order of importance.

Just in case you run out of time to study, or if you think you do not have enough time to cover all topics, you should study in an order.

    A. Each break may take about 15 minutes every two hours.

    B. Learn to arrange the subjects in order of importance.

    C. This means going to one place that will give you peace and quiet.

    D. The key to efficient studying is following the schedule strictly.

    E. You can find a way to test your knowledge by having a study partner.

    F. If you have a broad subject, you will need to break it down into smaller parts.

    G. To make the best use of your time, you need to learn how to study efficiently(高效地).

  • 13、He was already asleep. His bag stood ready by the backdoor. His pencil box was filled with freshly sharpened (削尖的) pencils. A big day lay ahead. My eyes filled with tears (泪水) as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school.

I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.

Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don't understand. Kindergarten is Mother's Day gifts made with hand-prints. High school is a funny card and a "Love you, Ma." Kindergarten is emails to the teacher about his difficulty with math. High school is depending on him to ask for help in class. Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just "My day was fine, Ma."

Kindergarten is the beginning. High school is the beginning of the end. You know that your time with him at home will become less and less. The moments where your family will always feel complete at the end of the day are coming to an end. I've raised him to leave us. I've raised him to be independent (独立的), and I'm watching him pull away, one day at a time.

As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten. The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave (挥手) and mouthed, "Love you." And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.

  • 14、Being the cat's whiskers (胡须) is a humorous and positive way of noting that something is considered to be very near perfect. The humorous and cute images that this particular term brings to mind have to do with the use of the whiskers of the cat, including the ability to express feelings, sense changes in the environment, help with hunting (捕猎), and help the cat measure distance (测量距离).

Different views are held on the exact origin (起源) of the English saying "cat's whiskers". Some believe that the term, along with the similar "cat's meow", has its origin in girls' boarding schools of the 19th century. Others believe that the term was first brought to life by Thomas Dorgan, an artist who was active during the early years of the 20th century. What is generally agreed is that by the 1920s, both "cat's whiskers" and "cat's meow" were often used in the United States, and commonly used as a term among young people of college age.

Unlike other sayings that may sometimes carry positive or negative meanings depending on the setting, "cat's whiskers" is always used in a positive way. An employer (雇主) may use the term to refer to an employee who produces wonderful work. Proud parents may say this to their children when they perform well in a school play or win some type of competition. In each situation, "cat's whiskers" is used to show warm feelings for another person.

While not used as commonly as before, being the cat's whiskers is still generally understood to be a good thing. Younger people may sometimes have to receive an explanation of what the term means, which can lead to seeing the use of the saying in a funny way. Even those who consider the saying to be outdated and not worthy of use in public may still use the term to show love and respect in private settings.

Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, "Welcome! Smile! It's a great day to be alive!" It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the "I can't" student.

I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A's presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became "cool" to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn't know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).

Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn't become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, "Kate, smile! It's a great day to be alive!"

How to make a good first impression at high school?

High school's starting soon, and I want to make a good first impression. I'm a little afraid because I'm short and weigh a bit too much and sometimes people make fun of me for that. Can anyone give me any advice on how to act during my first weeks, or what kind of clothes to wear, etc.?

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won't get any where being shy.

Your weight really doesn't matter. If you're really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don't worry about your weight, and don't let it get you down. "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don't wear the ‘in' clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they're very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

Freshman (九年级学生) year, just ended for me a few months ago!

Take it from me, the best thing for you to do is be nice to everyone. If someone isn't nice to you, don't take it personally. Try out for sports and clubs, and you'll soon make new friends.
