Helping Your Teen Understand the Value of Money

It seems that there are more things for teens to spend money on than ever. There are expensive clothes, video games, MP3 players, and more.  That's why it's important to help them understand the value of money.

Start teaching your children about money early. Starting around age 10, give them a few dollars every week for them to spend however they want. But let them choose what they want to do. Don't set limits on what they can spend it on, and don't continually buy them things they want. They'll soon learn that if they spend all their money as soon as they get it, they won't be able to afford more expensive things they want.

You should also start early introducing your children to budgets (预算) and how much things cost. Have them go to the store with you or watch you pay the bills. 

As your child gets older, about 13 or 14, increase their pocket money as you increase their responsibility. Once they're more responsible, give them a budget for something bigger like clothes and make them stick to it.

Eventually, your child will probably get a job.  Have them put some into a savings account to use for college or other pursuits. Let them use the rest as mad money to spend however they want. If you're worried about what they're buying, open them a checking account you can monitor.

It takes many small steps. Remember that they will probably mess up along the way, but mistakes are how they learn.

Over five decades after being captured, Lolita, the star orca (虎鲸) in Miami Seaquarium, will finally be able to bid adieu toher tiny tank in Florida and return to her home waters of the Pacific Northwest to live out the rest of her days.

Lolita, also known as Tokitae or Toki, is a 57-year-old female orca from the now-endangered southern resident orcas that live in the North Pacific Ocean and Washington State's Puget Sound. Lolita has lived at Miami Seaquarium since 1970, after she was captured from the waters of Puget Sound at 4 years old. Since then, Lolita has performed tricks in the aquarium pool until March 2022, when she was retired from public shows. She is currently the second oldest orca in captivity behind Corky, a 58-year-old male who lives at SeaWorld San Diego.

The aquarium announced it will begin the process of returning the orca to her natural habitat in the next two years. But Lolita's age and the fact that she's lived in captivity for decades and is unable to find food on her own could complicate her release back into the wild. "In a plan set to take up to two years, she will be first transported by plane to an ocean conservation area in the waters between Washington State and Canada, where trainers will teach her how to catch fish inside a large net," said Mr. Colby, an environmental historian. "She will also have to build up her muscles, as orcas typically swim about 160 kilometers per day."

One of the organizations campaigning for her release is PETA. "If Lolita is finally returned to her home waters, there will be cheers from around the world," the group said in a statement sent to Newsweek. "It'll offer her long-awaited relief after five miserable decades in a narrow tank and send a clear signal to other parks that the days of confining highly intelligent, far-ranging sea animals to prisons are ended."

A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 am. This is often even earlier elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 am in the US. According to studies about sleep, the average teenager needs eight to nine hours' sleep each night, but in fact a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of problems happen because our sleep patterns are not fixed and they change as we grow.

A16-year-old girl from Changsha, Hunan province, successfully reached the top of Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West, on Monday morning, becoming the youngest Chinese female to conquer the world's highest top from the southern slope (坡).

Xu Zhuoyuan is a first year high school student from Hunan province. On April 15, she left Changsha for Nepal. On April 21, she began her long walk from Lukla. 7 days later, she arrived at the base camp and started her altitude adaptation training at once. At 10 pm Beijing time on May 14, Xu Started walking from Camp 4 at an altitude of 7,950 meters on the southern slope of Qomolangma. After a punishing 10-hour climb, she successfully reached the summit.

Xu Zhuoyuan's father, Xu Jianglei, was the first person from Hunan province to reach the top of Qomolangma. Xu Zhuoyuan has been exploring remote areas with him since she was very young. Despite her young age, Xu Zhuoyuan has already climbed five mountains over 5,000 meters in China. When she was 12 years old, she made a statement on Hunan TV saying, "I will climb Qomolangma."

Four years later, she achieved her promise. Although Xu Zhuoyuan has rich climbing experience, she has been experiencing high-intensity professional training non-stop to conquer Qomolangma. Last year, she climbed Mount Muztagata, which stands 7,546 meters. "Human beings are small in the face of nature. We should respect nature and get closer to Qomolangma," said Xu Zhuoyuan.

She brought the gloves her father used when he reached the top with her as a form of inheritance and to bear witness to her own dream coming true. After finishing her university studies, she hopes to continue climbing and achieve the "7+2" (7 tops plus the North and South Poles).

Pocket money

Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do chores to get their pocket money, helping at home with tasks like cleaning, cooking, washing up, taking out the rubbish and ironing.

Different families give different amounts and the average for eight-to fifteen-year-olds in the UK is about £6 (53 yuan)a week. A report found that many children save at least a quarter of their weekly pocket money and that more boys than girls save their money.

Part-time work

A part-time job is an option for teenagers who don't have pocket money or who want to earn extra money. About 15 percent of teenagers have a job. Only children over 13 can work but there are some exceptions, for example, for actors. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering newspapers, shop work and restaurant or cafe work.

There are strict government laws about children working. They can work a maximum of two hours a day on a school day but not during school hours. At weekends and during school holidays, they can work longer hours. As for wages, the national minimum wage for under-18s is around £4 per hour and it increases every year. Its minimum wage is higher if you are older.

Banks

In Britain, some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no legal (法定的)age limit at which you can open a bank account, but a bank manager can decide whether to allow a child or young person to open an account. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child's bank account.
