The improvement by boys was particularly noticeable in maths, where the data analysis found that greater confidence was strongly associated with higher scores in the quadrennial tests conducted for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

Across both year groups in maths and in year 9 science, the researchers found that significantly higher percentages of boys reported being very confident on statements related to maths and science, while a large percentage of girls said they were not confident. In year 9 maths, 21% of boys and 9% of girls reported they were very confident, while 38% of boys and 60% of girls reported they were not confident. In 2024, boys consistently outperformed girls at both grades in maths, physics, economics and statistics.

TIMSS uses the number of books at home as an index (指标) for socioeconomic status. Stubborn gaps remain between disadvantaged pupils and their better-off peers. The researchers found a significant gap between pupils who had access to a large number of books at home and those who did not. In year 9 science, pupils in households with fewer than ten books at home scored 461, compared to 601 for those in households with over 200 books at home.

"Those who have fewer educational resources at home need extra funds in order to access the same opportunities to learn compared with their better-resourced peers," said Prof Mary Richardson, the study's co-principal investigator.

In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.

They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials flexible, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What's more, it's to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!

Research of this kind is ground-breaking. "This work demonstrates the great power of a technology," says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. "The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, flexibility, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow' any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can't achieve."

In 2018, I came to China for the first time to study at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (JUFE) and actively participated in the university's public welfare activities. During these events, local people often called me "Yang Lei Feng", which I later learned means "foreign Lei Feng".

Curious, I looked him up online and discovered a young soldier known for his selflessness and dedication to helping others. The more I read, the more I saw how his values aligned with the principles I aspired to uphold.

Inspired by Lei Feng's spirit, I established the Lei Feng International Volunteer Association on March 5, 2021 — Lei Feng Day — alongside young people from different countries at JUFE. Our mission is to support children with special needs, assist the elderly, promote environmental awareness, empower through education, and foster cross-cultural understanding. Through these efforts, we continue to keep Lei Feng's spirit alive in a modern, global context.

On Lei Feng Day in 2025, I took a bold step to spread his legacy beyond China by launching the global "Learn from Lei Feng" campaign. We celebrated the day in five countries — Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, and China — through discussions on his biography,charity programs, and community service activities.

What began as a vision to promote his values internationally has since grown into a global movement, now spanning 15 countries. Our efforts not only strengthen cross-cultural bonds but also contribute to building a more compassionate and service-oriented world.

For me, this campaign represents a full-circle moment. From discovering Lei Feng's story online to now inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps, I am reminded of how one person's story can spark a movement.

It was a sunny May morning in 2023. Michael Armus, a 69-year-old retired car painter, entered Bank of the West to deposit a check, feeling something wrong. Normally, bank workers greeted him cheerfully and laughed at his simple jokes.

But today, none of the tellers acknowledged him. Nor did the bank's manager, who sat at his desk with his head down and seemed to be whispering into his telephone. As Armus approached the teller windows, he noticed the three employees had similar worried looks on their faces. He heard one teller whisper to another, "He's got a note."

Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his striped T-shirt pulled up to partially hide his face. "This is a robbery," Armus thought.

He heard the man say, "I don't want to hurt anybody." Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller demanding cash and saying he had a gun. When his shirt slipped slightly, Armus recognized him — Eduardo, who often read Bible stories to passersby on a street corner. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus felt compassion for him, and a thought popped into his head: Maybe I can help.

He walked over to the man and calmly asked, "What's wrong? Don't you have a job?"

Shocked, Eduardo looked at Armus and exclaimed (呼喊), "There is nothing in this town for me. Nothing!" Then, with tears streaming down his face, he said, "I just want to go to prison."

Armus recalled his own troubled past. "I've been lost too," he said gently. "Let's talk outside." To everyone's surprise, Eduardo agreed.

Outside, Armus hugged Eduardo as he sobbed. Police soon arrived, aiming rifles (步枪) until they confirmed Armus was innocent. Eduardo, charged with attempted robbery, had no real gun. Officers praised Armus for calming the crisis.

"Love overcomes all," Armus later said. He often helped the homeless, carrying blankets in his car.

As we know, China has a long and glorious history of construction. Dujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering (achieve) is still used today.

These are the questions the cartoonist and writer Amy Kurzweil brings to Artificial: A Love Story, a graphic memoir that takes a heartfelt look at the technological dimensions of human connection. Kurzweil's perspective and storytelling shows her close relationship with her father, computer scientist and inventor Ray Kurzweil, who has long predicted the eventual merging of human and machine.

At its core, Artificial is an intimate story about how we preserve the bonds of family and the meaning of heritage across physical and temporal distances. Kurzweil narrates the life of her grandfather, Fritz "Fred" Kurzweil, who died when Ray was only 22.

Now Fred is coming back to life, in a way, through AI. Most plants need to be located near a window for light. Often this means taking up limited bookcase space. PICO is different because, while setting it on a tabletop is an option, it can also mount to vertical (垂直的) surfaces. While PICO is not intended to provide high quantities of food, its automatic functions and placement versatility make it an option for growing readily available herbs, visually pleasing succulents, or fragrant mini roses.

2,500 exhibits were showcased in a launch ceremony of PANDA GO! FEST HK, the city's largest panda-themed exhibition, at Hong Kong's airport on Monday, Dec. 2. 2024. They will be publicly displayed at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui this weekend before setting their footprint at three other locations this month.

One designated spot is Ocean Park, home to the twin cubs, their parents and two other pandas gifted by Beijing this year. The design of six of the sculptures, made of recycled rubber barrels and resins (树脂) among other materials, was inspired by these bears.

The cubs — whose birth in August made their mother Ying Ying the world's oldest first-time panda mom — may meet visitors in February. Ying Ying and the twin cubs' father, Le Le, are the second pair of pandas gifted by Beijing to Hong Kong since the former British colony returned to China's rule in 1997.

The new pair of Beijing-gifted pandas, An An and Ke Ke, who arrived in September, appeared relaxed and enjoyed their new home at Ocean Park. They are set to meet the public on Sunday.

My dog, Molly, ran after me as I walked to my car that fall morning. I had had her only a couple of weeks, but we had become nearly inseparable. I'd gone through heart surgery a few months back. On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT (amaze) audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China's most-watched TV show. Directed by famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance modern robot technology.

In the performance, humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) (dress) in colorful costumes danced yangko. They spun handkerchiefs (instant) and formed creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree, Chinese robotics company.
