Dear Editor,
I am writing to ask for advice on my relationship with my teenage son. To tell the truth, I often struggle to get along with him. Recently we have argued with each other a great deal. He is anxious about his skin because it has started to become very oily with lots of red spots.这些日子他总是很生气并看起来不太自信. I keep telling him that these changes are normal, and that things will turn out just fine. Of course, I wanted to show my concern for his condition, so I asked him to see a doctor. But then he became angry and we had a big argument. He told me that I was putting even more stress on him by talking about his spots all the time. In the end, I sent him to his room.最后他冷静下来 , but it took some time. The whole experience was really terrible and I do not want to go through the same thing again. What should I do?
Best wishes,
Mrs Zhao

Benjamin Franklin was a famous scientist, writer, printer,(invent) and politician. As a scientist, he was well known for his kite experiment. The story goes like this: Franklin had found lightning interesting for years,(believe) it was actually electricity. He designed an experiment to prove his theory.
He worked out that by flying a kite during thunderstorm, electricity could go through the wet kite line down to the earth. Knowing it was too(danger) to hold the wet line, Franklin held a silk ribbon(tie) to the end of it. He made sure the silk ribbon(stay) dry so that the electricity would not go through his body. Then he attached a metal key where the ribbon and kite line joined. a thunderstorm approached, the lightning would charge the key. Conducted a stormy day in 1752, his experiment proved lightning was(real) just electricity.
Though some doubted the(experiment) safety, Franklin's work advanced the study of electricity. His contributions remain influential in science.

6、In recent decades, global rates of short-sightedness have risen rapidly. Studies predict that half of the world's population could be short-sighted by 2050. In the UK and Europe alone, cases have doubled over the past 50 years. A recent study analyzing data from 107,442 UK residents aged 40 — 69 revealed that age, education level, and ethnicity (种族) are closely linked to short-sightedness risks.
The researchers found that there was a higher percentage of short-sightedness in people who were Chinese. In fact, Chinese participants had a 240% greater risk of developing short-sightedness in childhood compared to white participants. Interestingly, all other ethnic groups appeared to have a reduced risk of developing short-sightedness in childhood.
The researchers also looked at the impact that education had on short-sightedness. They found that the more years spent in education, the greater the risk a person had of developing short-sightedness in both childhood and adulthood. They also showed that the youngest participants (those born between 1965 — 1970) who had a university education were eight times more likely to develop short-sightedness in childhood compared to those who had no formal education qualifications.
The significant increase in short-sightedness is concerning for a number of reasons. For a person with short-sightedness, having to wear glasses can be costly. More significantly, it also puts them at greater risk of eye diseases. Not only could this seriously impact a person's way of life, it would also put a greater financial strain on healthcare systems.
There are a number of actions you can take to lower the risk of developing short-sightedness during childhood. Spending time outdoors has continued to demonstrate a protective effect against developing short-sightedness. But for children who may already be short-sighted, specialized glasses are available that have demonstrated success in reducing short-sightedness progression.
(1)、Which factor is NOT closely related to short-sightedness according to the recent study?A、Age. B、Height. C、Education level. D、Race.(2)、From Paragraph 2 we can guess that ________.A、Chinese participants had a 240% risk of developing short-sightedness B、white participants have the highest risk of developing short-sightedness C、short-sightedness is a common problem in China D、short-sightedness is more serious in all other ethnic groups than in Chinese people(3)、According to the writer, what is an effective way for children to prevent short-sightedness?A、Doing eye exercise. B、Wearing specialized glasses. C、Spending less time in education. D、Having outdoor activities.(4)、What is the passage mainly about?A、Differences in short-sightedness rates across countries. B、The impact of outdoor activities on children's health. C、Advances in short-sightedness correction technology. D、Rising short-sightedness rates and associated risk factors. -
7、One Tuesday morning in 2016, Travis Rudolph, a star football player at Florida State University, visited Montford Middle School in Florida with his teammates. While most students crowded around the athletes, Rudolph noticed a boy sitting alone in the cafeteria. The boy, Bo Paske, a sixth grader with autism (自闭症), often ate lunch by himself. Without hesitation, Rudolph asked, "Can I sit with you?"
Their simple pizza lunch was captured (拍摄) in a photo that Bo's mother, Leah Paske, later shared on Facebook. In her post, Leah revealed her daily worries about Bo's loneliness. "Autism might protect him from noticing stares or missed birthday parties," she wrote, "but my heart aches when he eats alone." The photo quickly went viral, receiving over 14,000 shares and national media attention. Reporters interviewed the pair, and Bo's story inspired countless discussions about autism and kindness.
When asked about his act, Rudolph said, "I just wanted to be kind. Everyone deserves respect". Bo described the experience as "like sitting on a rainbow" Rudolph signed Bo's lunchbox, turning an ordinary school day into a lifelong memory. Years later, Bo still keeps the signed lunchbox as a cherished reminder of that special moment.
Leah later wrote: "For one day, I didn't worry if my son ate alone. A hero sat across from him." The story reminded the world that small acts of kindness can bridge differences and create light in unexpected places—proving that even brief connections can leave lasting influence on hearts.

Sometimes things don't go as planned, but that doesn't mean they can't still be wonderful in their own way. My parents and I had spent forever researching summer camps online. Finally, we picked out one where I could design games, animate (制作动画) characters, and learn other cool coding (编程) stuff.
My mom said, "I like the idea of you exercising that clever brain of yours. But I also want you to get plenty of fresh air." "Campers can choose to hike or swim every afternoon!" I said, as I clicked on the registration form.
My dad filled out the form, and weeks later, my parents dropped me off for what I thought would be a week of nonstop computer-coding fun.
I arrived at the check-in table at the same time as a camper of my age named Halley, who was wearing an adorable sunhat. Halley greeted, "We are in the same group - number 7." Led by an advisor, we followed the green arrows to the campsite.
I surprisedly found that it was so cool and woodsy along the path. I exchanged ideas with Halley about what might come out of the camp. Halley excitedly mentioned the little animals he loved to observe and something about night sky watching.
"You gave me the best idea," I said. "I'll base my characters on the animals you mentioned!" Halley laughed. "I might be missing something here. Who are these mysterious characters?"
"You know, the characters we'll be designing and animating on computers this week!" I said. "Uh, sorry. Still lost," said Halley. "Why would we be doing computer stuff at Nature Camp?"
It was then that I realised some errors must have been made. I must have accidentally clicked on the wrong online form! We immediately raced back to the welcome table to see if I could switch over to Tech Camp, but of course it was completely full.

12、Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself.
She credits these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays. A day's work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money. She says: "I'm sure I wasn't much of a help to start with, painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking work, but I know he was proud of my skills."
Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds: "I've moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures, so, it's been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I've moved out."
With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over that coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around £823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. Two fifths wish to increase the value of their house. Though DIY has traditionally been seen as a male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.

Tom was an ordinary high school student with great potential. However, ever since he got his hands on a state-of-the-art (最先进的) smartphone, his life began to look like a mess. What began as a casual interest in mobile games and social media soon turned into a full-blown addiction (上瘾). He would spend hours on end, eyes glued (粘) to the screen, unaware of the world around him.
In class, instead of paying attention to the teachers' lectures, he would hide his phone under the desk, absorbed in texting his online friends or watching entertaining videos. His homework was either carelessly done or left unfinished. His grades, which had been always above average, started to fall quickly. His teachers noticed the change and repeatedly reminded him, but he was too deep in the addiction to pay attention to their warnings.
At home, the situation was no better. Family dinners were disturbed (打扰;干扰) by his constant phone-checking. He locked himself in his room, preferring online strangers to that of his own family. His parents were deeply concerned and tried various methods to wean (使……戒掉) him off the phone. They limited his screen time, hid the device, and even engaged (忙于,从事于) in long. heart-to-heart conversations with him about the importance of focus and self-control. But each time, Tom would find a way to get back to his phone.
One day, Tom's school announced a scholarship (奖学金) opportunity for students with outstanding academic performance. This was a dream for Tom, as it could open doors to a well-known university and a bright future. But as he looked at his recent report cards filled with disappointing grades and thought about his phone-addicted habits, he felt disappointed. It was then that he realized how terrible the situation was and decided to take measures to overcome his addiction and lead a normal life.

18、Hop on the Silent Walking Trend
Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection. That's a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here's everything you need to know about the trend.
Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. Meanwhile, consciously observing the sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations during the walk can significantly impact cognitive and emotional well-being.
To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. And it might even be good for your brain. Scientists applaud the virtues of boredom for brain health, believing that it boosts creativity and improves social connections. And if you do get bored, rest assured that it shows you've disconnected from external distractions. Go with it, and make sure you take a different route each time — it'll keep you motivated.
Start off with five-minute silent walks and eventually build up to thirty minutes. If you're usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you're a few minutes into your silent walk, you'll feel the magic kick in.
Regular reflection and ongoing documentation are essential. After completing a silent walk, take time to reflect upon any emerging thoughts, feelings, or insights. Journaling about the experience can also solidify connections between thoughts and ideas, providing a valuable tool for self-reflection and growth.
A. But being bored won't hurt you.
B. Taking different paths can lead to exciting discoveries.
C. Adjusting the routine gradually can help ease into the experience.
D. You'll also start noticing the little things around you more clearly.
E. They can deepen understanding and serve as a record of personal growth
F. Unlike exercise-oriented walking, it isn't about reaching certain speed or steps
G. In such an environment, you can immerse yourself in the natural soundscape (音景) .

19、Beethoven is a giant of classical music. And the one with the most influence at least when it comes to piano compositions. That's according to a study in the journal EPJ Data Science.
If you're wondering how data analysis could determine something as abstract as cultural influence, it's worth remembering the great thing about music: it's the most mathematical of the art forms we actually can deal with because a lot of it is symbolic. The music is written in symbols that are connected in time.
Juyong Park is a theoretical physicist at the Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology. Park and his colleagues collected 900 piano compositions by 19 composers covering the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, from 1700 to 1910. Then they used that mathematical quality to their advantage by dividing each composition into what they called "code words," a group of notes played at the same time—in other words, a chord. They then compared each chord to the chords that came before it. "Our computer model allows us to calculate the degree of shared melodies between past and future works." said Park.
The composer with top marks for novelty was Rachmaninoff. But when the researchers looked at those chord transitions across all 19 composers, it was Beethoven who was most heavily borrowed from—meaning, at least among the composers in this analysis, his influence was the largest.
Their study comes with a couple caveats. The researchers only considered piano compositions in this work—not orchestral works. And by only studying chord transitions, their conclusions wouldn't capture artists who had influence in other ways. "It's well understood that Mozart's contribution to music mainly comes from the musical forms that he devised. That was not very well captured by our mathematical modeling."

20、The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy, a dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what's known as "green-up", when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study published in early March in the journal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds' survival. "In discussing climate change, we often focus on warming," says Scott Loss, a co-author of the study. "But the length and timing of seasons — like when winter ends and spring begins — are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change."
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds' migration routes. "By contrast, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America," says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, "but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的)."
"Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats," Loss says. "This adds to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species." And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. "It's really important, if we can't address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can."
