I still remember a day when I was six years old. My father brought home a small white kitten for me. I named her Snowflake. She was the most adorable thing I had ever seen, with her soft fur and bright blue eyes. Snowflake quickly became my best friend. We would play together in the garden, chasing butterflies and rolling in the grass.

As I grew older, my schoolwork and extracurricular activities took up more and more of my time. I didn't have as much time to spend with Snowflake as I used to. She seemed to sense my absence and would often curl up in the corner, waiting for me to come home. But I was always too tired to give her the attention she deserved.

One day, when I came home from school, I noticed that Snowflake wasn't waiting for me at the door as usual. I searched the house for her, but she was nowhere to be found. I called her name, but there was no response. Panic started to set in. I asked my parents if they had seen her, and they shook their heads.

I rushed outside and started looking around the neighborhood. I asked the neighbors if they had seen a white kitten, but no one had. I searched the bushes, the alleys, and even the rooftops, but there was still no sign of Snowflake. I was heartbroken. I realized that I had missed her company too much and that I had been so cruel to pay little attention to her.

I returned home, feeling defeated. I sat on the doorstep, tears streaming down my face. I blamed myself for not taking better care of Snowflake. Just as I was about to give up hope, I heard a faint meowing sound coming from the garage.

Night owls (猫头鹰), biologically wired to stay active late into deep night, often struggle with routines yet perform creatively during twilight hours.

For such teens like Betty, midnight marks the start of peak productivity. Bedrooms transform into secret laboratories: half-written essays compete with gaming sounds, Instagram stories bloom like digital night flowers, and snack wrappers pile up like modern art installations.. Yet this after-hours freedom results in sleepy mornings, cold breakfasts, and teachers' disapproving frowns that form their daily reality.

. Harvard research shows night owls' brains produce melatonin, a chemical that helps regulate cycles of sleeping and waking, 2 — 3 hours later than early birds, creating permanent "social jetlag (时差)". Not getting enough sleep regularly makes the part of the brain that helps with memory smaller by 7% — 10%, making learning harder. The National Sleep Foundation warns that teens getting under 7 hours nightly have 72% higher anxiety risks and 58% reduced academic performance.

To end this cycle, we think strategic steps are necessary. Begin by fixing wake-up time within a 30-minute window daily, using dawn simulation lights. Initiate a "digital sunset" 90 minutes before bed, replacing screens with paperback books or sketching..

Amy Shapiro, a nutritionist, recommends bananas at 8 pm. Most crucially, night owls should negotiate with parents and teachers for later morning routines when possible — research in Sleep Journal shows allowing teens to start school just 45 minutes later improves test scores by 12%.. However, biological differences require smart management rather than guilt-based resistance.

    A. They're struggling to please others.

    B. Science reveals alarming consequences.

    C. Biological clocks demand strict schedules.

    D. They exchange messages with teens across time zones.

    E. Remember, night owl tendencies aren't imperfections.

    F. A typical night owl trapped in the delayed sleep cycles.

    G. Gradually adjust the bedtime earlier by 15 minutes weekly.

  • 11、Where does the origin of the Indo-European (IE) language family lie? Ron Pinhasi and his team contribute a new piece to this puzzle. They analyzed ancient DNA from 435 individuals from archaeological sites across Eurasia between 6400 BCE — 2000 BCE and found out that a newly recognized Caucasus-Lower Volga (CLV) population can be connected to all IE-speaking populations.

Originating from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) language, IE languages, which number over 400 and include major groups such as Germanic, Romance, and Celtic, are spoken by nearly half the world's population today. Since the 19th century, historians have been investigating their origins and spread as there is still a knowledge gap.

Earlier studies showed that the Yamnaya culture of the Pontic-Caspian steppes (草原) north of the Black and Caspian Seas expanded into both Europe and Central Asia beginning about 3100BCE, accounting for the appearance of "steppe ancestry (祖先)" in human populations across Eurasia 3100 BCE — 1500 BCE. These migrations (迁徙) are widely regarded as the probable carrier for the spread of IE languages.

The only branch of the IE language that had not exhibited any steppe ancestry previously was Anatolian, including Hittite, preserving language characteristics that were lost in all other IE branches. Previous studies had not found steppe ancestry among the Hittites because, the new paper argues, the Anatolian languages came from a language spoken by a group that had not been adequately described before. When the newly recognized CLV population is used as a source, at least five individuals in Anatolia show CLV ancestry.

The CLV group therefore has something to do with any IE-speaking populations and is the best candidate for the population that spoke Indo-Anatolian, the ancestor of both Hittite and all later IE languages.

"The discovery marks a turning point in the 200-year-old quest to reconstruct the origins of the Indo-Europeans and the routes by which these people spread across Europe and parts of Asia," concludes Ron Pinhasi.

(1)、What contributed to the spread of IE languages?
A、The migration from Central Asia. B、The expansion out of the steppes. C、The appearance of steppe ancestry. D、The increase in the CLV population.
(2)、What can we know about the Hittite language?
A、It is in danger of dying out. B、It has never been recorded yet. C、It was once thought to be lack of steppe ancestry. D、It is a source of many languages in the world.
(3)、Which of the following best describes the CLV population?
A、A group that is a key link in IE origins. B、A group that only existed in Anatolia. C、A group that originated from the Yamnaya culture. D、A group that spoke Anatolian languages exclusively.
(4)、What can be the best title for the text?
A、How does the Indo-European language family develop? B、What is the significance of the Indo-European language? C、DNA helps to recognize Caucasus-Lower Volga population. D、Missing link in Indo-European languages' history has been found.
  • 12、In recent years, there have been debates about whether animals have consciousness like we humans do. To look into it, we must first understand what consciousness actually means.

A conscious being can be considered to be having subjective experiences of the world and its own body. If you are having a mental experience, you are conscious. We take "experience" to indicate the conscious sensation during states of wakeful processing of sensory perception, imagery or dreaming. A motion sensor might be able to sense the environment, but it is probably not aware that it could do so.

Since non-human subjects cannot verbally report their experiences, there is very limited knowledge of how their mental process works. However, by observing animal behaviour, we can see that they react to the environment too: fight, flight, or curiosity. It is logical to say that animals possess consciousness the way humans do.

According to experts, consciousness depletes (耗费) something in the waking brain, and we cannot keep it up indefinitely. The need to sleep is thus not forced upon us by our environment, but by the needs of the brain itself. If sleeping serves to bring back the thing that is depleted because of our consciousness, it is reasonable to think that animals that have to sleep are conscious when they are awake.

Besides, animals also possess a special emotion that many people think only humans show — empathy. One ecologist witnessed a humpback whale sweeping a seal out of the water and onto its fin to keep it away from nearby killer whales. Though incidents like this seem extraordinary to us, animals have probably been doing it for millions of years.

The study of animal consciousness has tremendous implications. Must different species be treated differently depending on their display of moral traits, their ability to experience and show emotion, and their specific level of consciousness? Must we have a bill of animal rights in place that can guide us in what is proper and lawful conduct in relation to specific species? These are just some questions researchers and policymakers, with further research, will be able to address.

    (1)、How is paragraph 2 developed?
A、By making comparisons. B、By giving definitions. C、By analyzing cause and effect. D、By presenting arguments.
(2)、Which is a proof of animal consciousness?
A、They are capable of staying awake during the day. B、They use a special language during communication. C、They are able to respond to the surroundings. D、They tend to depend on each other for survival.
(3)、Why do humans and animals need to sleep according to the text?
A、It makes them better adapt to the environment. B、It helps restore what is consumed by consciousness. C、It is a natural habit that formed over millions of years. D、It is necessary for the refreshment of physical strength.
(4)、What does the text mainly talk about?
A、Consciousness as a distinctive human characteristic. B、The evolution of consciousness in humans. C、Ways to study the mental process of animals. D、The display of consciousness in animals.

This can be a real headache. Tally is a new app that promises to solve this problem. Here is my experience using it.

First, you're walked through some introduction screens about the app and then guided to enter your credit card information. Although you can shun typing in that information by scanning your credit cards, the feature never worked when I used it. I had to enter my card information by myself.

I was then asked to hand over my online banking login credentials (登录凭证). Tally then tries to connect to all my accounts. Next, Tally tries to qualify you for their line of credit. This is where I ended up getting stuck because the instructions didn't spell out that they would only be doing a "soft pull" on my credit, rather than a "hard pull." Whenever you apply for new credit, the lender will request a copy of your credit report. That's called a hard pull, and too many of them can lower your credit score.

Fortunately, Tally uses a "soft pull." A soft pull happens when a company asks for information about your credit, but it isn't a part of a new credit application. Because of that, it doesn't affect your credit score.

However, Tally doesn't tell you that they're going to do a soft pull until after you've entered all of your credit card information, birthday, and phone number. I had to stop midway because I thought Tally would do a hard pull, which I definitely didn't want.

I continued through the process until I finally reached an explainer page saying they would only be conducting a soft pull. Tally could do a better job telling users this information earlier in the process.

(1)、What does the underlined word "shun" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A、Avoid. B、Risk. C、Delay. D、Suggest.
(2)、Why did the author get stuck?
A、He misspelled his password. B、His credit score was too low. C、He forgot his login credentials. D、He didn't get specific instructions.
(3)、What does the author think of Tally?
A、It is cheap to download. B、It can replace credit cards. C、It still has room to improve. D、It helps users save money.
(4)、What is the aim of the text?
A、To teach readers how to use an app. B、To tell the development of an app. C、To show how to apply for a credit card. D、To stress the convenience of credit cards.
