Starting high school brings both excitement and challenges. On the first day, all students must go to the office to finish their assessment. By joining in different school activities, students can make new friends, share ideas and build confidence, making their high school life more meaningful.

You know how disappointed it can be if you are not able to communicate with the (native) when you're traveling, and you might think learning a new language is a tough task.

But fear not! We figured out (exact) how many words you need to learn to speak a language well. A group of linguists (语言学家) have created a test (see) how many words you know in English. There are 200,000+ words in the English language, but the test only (include) 50 of them. You may not understand all of the 50 words. The linguists believe that if you multiply (乘) number of words out of 50 that you understand by 500, you'll almost know your English vocabulary.

A professor has found that native speakers of a language know 15,000 to 20,000 lemmas (词目). A lemma (make) up of a root word (say: walk) and all of (it) inflections (屈折形式) (walked, walking, walker, etc.). But if you learn a new language, you can never understand 15,000 lemmas.

He discourages people from learning all of the words in a language. There are 800 to 1,000 lemmas are used most frequently in the language. He advises people to focus these lemmas. With these lemmas, people can understand 75% of the language. And they will be (confidence) enough to start a conversation, order at a restaurant, and deal with other daily communication.

It also means trusting your instincts, the ability you're born with, rather than through training and being confident about your ability to face challenges. A resourceful person is not the one getting cross or panicking when something goes wrong. They're thinking about how to solve the problem.

when we learn to problem solve for ourselves rather than immediately going to others for help, it can help to build our confidence, help us feel more independent, and feel better about making decisions. Being resourceful may not help you avoid problems, but thinking creatively about how you can deal with them will make you feel less stressed and more prepared next time. This can boost self-esteem, that is, how you feel about yourself.

When you're facing a challenge, try to focus on the actual problem rather than how you feel about it. Think about where and when it happened and what the causes are. Next, think up as many solutions to the problem as you can. Finally, review what has and hasn't worked, so you're equipped to deal with a situation next time.

And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you're unable to solve, then ask a trusted adult for help.

A team of researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden conducted a study to determine whether a weighted metal chain blanket could improve insomnia symptoms (症状) compared to a light plastic chain blanket. Subjects were randomly given either a weighted metal chain blanket or a light plastic chain blanket, which were the same shape and size. Those who were provided with a weighted metal chain blanket first tried on an 8-kilogram blanket. If this was too heavy, a 6-kilogram blanket was then provided. Over a four-week period, their sleep was judged using surveys and a wrist-based device called an actigraph.

They found participants who used the weighted metal chain blanket reported that their insomnia symptoms dropped significantly, while those who had used the light plastic chain blanket did not experience such obvious improvements. Furthermore, anxiety symptoms decreased much more for those who used the weighted metal chain blanket than those who used the light plastic chain blanket.

The principle behind these blankets is that the pressure of the weight provides some value of treatment. It's almost like a baby's wrapping blanket that calms it as it sleeps. Weighted blankets can calm your nerves. Pressure from the blanket may contribute to nervous system responses that lower your heart rate and breathing when you're anxious. This can help you calm down and sleep. The pressure could also cause your brain to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps your mind and body calm down.

"While these findings are promising, more research is needed to support the effectiveness," says the lead researcher.

The story was published in 1818 and introduced readers to Dr Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who brings to life a creature that he put together from the parts of the dead body. Although Dr Frankenstein is frightened by his creation and gives up the plan halfway, the creature manages to educate itself and then seeks a punishment on his creator. The novel explores humanity's desire for creation and the fear of the change it brings.

Animal Farm (Author: George Orwell)

A group of farm animals fight against their master, Mr Jones, after they realize he is mistreating them and offering them nothing in return for their work. When they challenge the leadership, they are punished for speaking out. This classic isn't about animal rights. Orwell wrote it to protest (抗议) against Stalinism (斯大林主义) in Russia.

It's known as "performative reading" as the "reader" wants "everyone to know" they read, wrote Alaina Demopoulos in The Guardian. They're signalling they have the "taste and attention span" to "pick up a physical book".

The phenomenon has its roots in 2021, when a boom in book clubs led by celebrities along with "BookTok", the section of TikTok dedicated to promoting and discussing commercial fiction, turned favoured books into a "trend-driven accessory", said Sarah Manavis in The New Statesman.

BookTok is seen as performative, with "trendy books" going viral not because of the "quality of the literature" but because it suggests an "increasingly fashionable, intellectual-looking style". And when reading becomes a competition, with "countless users showing off" about having read more than 35 books in a single month, supposedly, quality takes a backseat to "demonstrating yourself to be a voracious ‘reader'."

Social posturing through books isn't new. What is new is the "uniquely unapologetic" way social media "rubber-stamps" the idea of books as "an accessory, rather than an art". And there's a danger it could lead to publishers focusing their efforts on books that are "feed-friendly".

But the inconvenient truth is that the virality of literature has led to an uptick in book sales. In 2023, 669 million physical books were sold, the highest overall level ever recorded, along with an increase of visits to UK libraries.

One of life's "simplest pleasures" remains "falling into a story" and "tuning the world out", without "worrying about what someone's going to think of you", said Demopoulos. Enjoy the story. Many people are still doing exactly that, so rather than "finger-wagging" about performative reading, next time you see someone with a book at a coffee shop or the park, just leave them alone, because "this is not for you", they're simply "enjoying the moment".

"Have you had your five a day?" on British supermarket shelves is a reminder to customers to ensure they are eating at least five slices of fruits and vegetables per day, promoting a healthy diet. Many countries have launched similar campaigns to encourage people to eat more healthily. Fresh, natural produce is usually very dense in nutrients. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets. "Eating a rainbow" could be one way to get more nutrients.

Other advice recommends that we should be more adventurous in what we eat. Cooking food that we haven't eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don't usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients. It's not just about fruit and vegetables. Even flavorings such as garlic, ginger or turmeric can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while also leading people to use less salt. Dairy products such as milk and cheese, are high in calcium, while in limited amounts, meat can be a good source of protein.

If you're not feeling that adventurous, then swapping food items can be beneficial. Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white bread or rice can increase fibre intake. Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps. Possibly surprisingly, popcorn is a wholegrain snack that is high in fibre.

So, fresh fruit and vegetables, swapping the worst things, and just a little bit more adventure could be the secret to a more nutritious diet.

It all started when my four-year-old son's bloodwork (血样) showed something terrible. We had to do an MRI (核磁共振), and it was a truly worrying experience. The doctors explained that they would have to intubate (插管) my son to get the medical pictures they needed. When the day came, my little boy held me as nurses told me to lay my baby down on the bed. It was a hard day for a mother.

I could hardly see through my tears as the nurse sent my mother and me to the waiting room. The nurse explained it would take two hours. I was worried. I didn't want to sit in that waiting room. But how could I get through those next two hours? "I want to go shopping," I told my mom.

I walked up to the saleswoman, and explained my plan to the young lady, "My little boy is getting an MRI today. So I'm just waiting here for the next two hours. Would it be okay if I bought a lot of gifts and sent them upstairs to some children in the hospital?"

"Of course, we can send gifts upstairs," she said. "Who would you like to send them to?"

"Can you just give them to the nurses and let them give the gifts to the children who need them the most?" I replied. And she smiled and gave me a thumbs-up (赞赏).
