How to Choose a Good Book
I'm a slow reader. In general, I can only finish two books in a month.Instead, I used to spend the time necessary to get the most out of the book without getting lost in details. But now I emphasize (重视) quality over quantity. How can we do that? How can we choose a good book to read?
Be curious. I believe that having the right attitude is the starting point. What is the right attitude to have? When it comes to self-education, the right attitude is curiosity. Because unlike formal education where external (外部的) factors push you to learn, with self-education you need to motivate yourself.
Find potential books. To find a good book to read, you should collect potential books to read. In my case, I usually put them on my Amazon wish list. How do you find these potential books? Well, my first source is bestseller lists.I can then decide whether or not the book is a good one for me. If it is, then I'll add it to my list of potential books to read.
With a list of potential books to read, how do you choose which one to read? In my case, I ask myself a question. Which book would make the most difference in my current situation? This question might seem simple, but if you use it, it can make a big difference in your personal growth.
A. Choose the books that excite me most.
B. Choose the best book for your current situation.
C. Curiosity is like fuel in your self-education journey.
D. This is fine for me because my target is on quality.
E. Reading books is a great way to educate yourself.
F I also follow some websites that often recommend good books.
G. Here are three simple steps on how to choose a good book to read.

The whole world knows them: actors, singers, models, athletes and TV personalities. If I use social media, I get too familiar.
I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities. The problem is that by idolizing the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the things that are truly important and that are changing our world. You probably know who Leonardo DiCaprio is—a very talented American actor and film producer. But then you probably don't know who Cori Bargmann is. Bargmann is a scientist who is uncovering the causes of Alzheimer's and autism, which have been unknown for years.
What I think is wrong is that DiCaprio's net worth is $260 million dollars, while Bargmann's is less than $l million dollars. DiCaprio is definitely talented and has worked hard to give us good films, but Bargmann is working for something that can save thousands of humans who are suffering. And just because our society prefers to idolize the entertainment industry instead of science, she gets paid much less than she deserves.
But if it would benefit the world to invest all of our time and attention toward scientists, why don't we make scientists our new "celebrities"?
First of all, we like being entertained. We love pretty faces and easy-to-digest information. It's easier to care about simple stuff rather than scientific, complicated things. Another reason is that most scientists don't like being in the spotlight. They' re mostly reserved and like to have privacy. They' re busy people, which explains why they haven't attracted the media the same way that performers have. Also, people have free will and the right to be interested in whatever they want to be.
However, studies have shown that young people are more interested in a scientific career as a result of COVID-19. The pandemic has also made known some scientists who have suddenly started appearing on TV and guiding us on how to get protected from this deadly virus. Maybe that is the start of the development of a different point of view which will be in favor of science for future generations.
(1)、 Why does the author mention Leonardo DiCaprio and Cori Bargmann?A、To introduce the topic. B、To give an example. C、To offer a definition. D、To propose a solution.(2)、 Why are scientists not as well-known as actors?A、Scientists get paid much less than actors. B、People are busy choosing what they like. C、Scientists don't feel like being paid attention to. D、People prefer entertainment to complex science.(3)、What does the word "that" underlined in the last paragraph refer to?A、Studies make scientists known and accepted by the masses. B、Young people want to change their jobs because of the pandemic. C、People are attracted to science and scientists during a special time. D、Most scientists gradually become willing to show up in public light.(4)、What's the author's attitude toward entertainment stars?A、Objective. B、Favorable. C、Prejudiced. D、Indifferent. -

Envelope Budget
From McDonald's to Sonic, fast food had a bad effect on my waistline and my budget. It was nothing to run to a drive-through to pick up a cold drink or a quick bite to eat. It was so easy to use my card for a small purchase. For me, I got a lot of satisfaction from fast food.
One day I sat down and calculated that I was spending a surprising $40 a week on fast food. This was a lot of iced coffee and hamburgers! Instead of reducing my guilty pleasures, I decided to give myself a strong budget to reduce my consumption. Every Monday I placed an envelope with$20 in my purse. That was my fast food budget for the entire week. If there was anything left over at the end of the week, it was mine to save or spend. If I spent all of the money during the week, there were no more fast food stops that week.
The budget made me more mindful of my purchases. Instead of purchasing a large drink from Sonic, I would purchase a small. It was still satisfying but not nearly as pricey. Instead of eating a whole meal, I would pick the part that I actually wanted. Many days, the thought of hanging onto the money for a special purpose meant more to me than the instant satisfaction of fast food. I never really felt unhappy because it was a conscious choice to spend or save with each purchase.
Envelope budget kept me honest. I had a clear idea how much money was spent each week on fast food purchases. I started to bring my lunches more often to save more money for the week. It was a fun challenge to see how much I could save every week.
Changing the way I spent on fast food not only helped my budget, but improved my weight. In the first month I was able to get rid of 5 pounds by simply changing the way I approached spending on fast food. Now I am more likely to bring my lunch than to buy it. I am not upset, but empowered to make positive choices to improve my life.
(1)、 According to Paragraph 1, the author ____.A、had no time to cook for herself B、was fond of fast food very much C、lived with a small amount of money D、got some benefits from using her card(2)、 We can infer from the last paragraph that ____.A、envelope budget is good for health B、the budget means a pressure on life C、it is unusual to make some changes D、it is hard to enjoy a healthy lifestyle(3)、What is the passage mainly about?A、Why the author became addicted to fast food. B、Why the author took envelope budget seriously. C、How fast food controlled the author's behavior. D、How envelope budget changed the author's life. -

Researchers are looking into new ways to generate efficient photovoltaic energy (光伏能源) and for this they have been inspired by the v-shaped posture of the Cabbage White butterfly (菜粉蝶).
Photovoltaic energy is the science behind solar power, where light is turned into electricity. It is a two-step process. Step one is a photoelectric effect, caused by sunlight. The second step is an electrochemical process, which generates an electric current.
To improve the collection of sunlight, a research group has been inspired by the resting posture of the Cabbage White butterfly. The species has a natural range across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. To many farmers, the butterflies are regarded as a pest; to others, they are pretty to look at. To one research group the butterflies are an inspiration.
The butterfly adopts a v-shape in order to heat up its flight muscles before taking off. By creating solar panels (太阳能电池板) in this formation, scientists think that the quantity of power that a solar panel can produce can be increased by around 50 percent.
The Cabbage White butterfly is different to many other butterflies in using the v-formation. On cloudy days butterflies need to wait to receive enough sunlight in order to fly. However, by using the v-posture, the Cabbage White butterfly is able to take in more energy more quickly than other butterflies. In addition, the butterfly can reflect sunlight from its wings, which allows its flight muscles to be warmed to an ideal temperature.
The new research was conducted at the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustain --ability Institute (ESI) and the Centre for Ecology and Conservation. Discussing the findings with Laboratory Manager magazine, lead researcher Professor Tapas Mallick stated: "Biomimicry (仿生学) in engineering is not new. However, this research shows pathways to develop low cost solar power that have not been done before."
(1)、 Which can be the best title for the text?A、The future of solar power. B、The butterfly effect theory. C、Cool things about the Cabbage White butterfly. D、Butterflies contribute to solar power revolution.(2)、 What is the main purpose of Cabbage White butterflies using the v-posture?A、To look prettier. B、To take a good rest. C、To prepare for flight. D、To protect themselves.(3)、 What is Tapas Mallick's attitude towards the research?A、Positive. B、Casual. C、Doubtful. D、Disagreeing.(4)、 Where is the text most probably taken from?A、A lesson plan. B、A book review. C、A science report. D、A personal diary. -

Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other—art. She didn't know why she just wasn't any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. "Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition," she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. "Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying." Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
"I understand this project scared you, Lily," Ms. Clay said. "Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want." Ms. Clay smiled at her. "Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn't always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can't wait to see it."
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay's words. "Art is a person's way of expressing his or her feelings." Lily wrote the word "terrified" on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.
Paragraph 1:
Why not create something out of crumpled paper?
Paragraph 2:
On Friday, Lily carefully carried her project into the library.

Online shopping is a type of remote transaction as it is a purchase agreement reached by two parties through the transmission of network information. The purchaser places an order and makes payment, and the seller is required to ship the merchandise within 24-48 hours. However, if the seller is out of stock, then the merchandise cannot be shipped on time, so the consumer faces the risk of having to wait for a long time. If there is a holiday, the merchandise tends to be delayed due to the logistics(物流) companies being busy. Moreover, your merchandise may be damaged during transportation or delivery process. Re-order or reshipment also takes time. Consumers are advised to avoid the peak of online shopping when purchasing fresh and urgently needed products. Close attention should also be paid to logistics information after payment.
Customers who shop online are required to register as a member on the corresponding shopping website. When registering, certain personal information is required. Some websites need your personal information such as your contacts and bank card account, otherwise you will not be able to complete the transaction. Some computer hackers may obtain your personal information through certain means, and illegally make use of the information to threaten your personal and property safety. At the same time, the development of the modern logistics industry may also let out your private information. When sending and receiving deliveries, you need to fill in the contact number of both parties to facilitate communication, which, however, may also compromise privacy.
Returning the products purchased online may be troublesome. The customer will get in touch with the seller to request a return when the quality or the description of the product received does not match the advertisement. The seller may refuse the return for various reasons. Even if the relevant authority steps in, there might be a lack of evidence and thus it may be concluded hastily. Since online shopping is a long-distance transaction, it is difficult to guarantee the after-sales service of some goods. Once the product breaks down in later use, it will be difficult to guarantee after-sales rights protection.
(1)、 The reason why a consumer may wait for a long time might not include____.A、the selling party lack goods. B、the purchaser is busy. C、goods are not transported at the expected time. D、your goods may be broken when it is delivered.(2)、 If you want to buy fresh and necessary goods online, you should ____.A、go to a physical store in person. B、escape the rush hour. Plastic surgery (整形手术) is not only popular in the US, but is also spreading across Asia. It is reported that South Korea is now the world's largest market for plastic surgery.
In order to change their looks, 20 percent of women aged between 19 and 49 in Seoul said they had gone under the knife. The growth of South Korea's pop music industry increases the popularity. Many patients visit clinics with photos of singers, asking doctors to copy their noses or eyes.
Joo Kwon, who founded one of the largest clinics in Seoul, recently opened a hotel to better serve customers. People will spend about $ 17,675 in a single visit. An increasing number of customers are non-Koreans, from China, Japan, the Middle East and even Africa. Leaders in South Korea say that this will help the Korean economy.
However, Mr. Kwon warned that young people should be careful when taking such operations. "I think South Korea doesn't understand the word ‘beauty', because everyone looks pretty much the same. It is also related to low self-confidence. I think the situation will somewhat become better in the future as the society becomes more different. But it will take quite a bit of time until we get there," he told reporters.

Practice Mindfulness (正念)
Mindfulness involves drawing your attention to the present and being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. . In one study, participants in a mindfulness program experienced an improved view of their self-worth.
Take Small Steps
Getting started can be the hardest part of learning how to be more social for those who are shy. . You can start out small. Try chatting with the teller at the bank or the person ahead of you in the checkout line. This can help you build confidence and work your way up to more difficult challenges.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off" said the teacher to her class.
An extra day off unsuited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.
"How was school, Kayla?" asked her mom.
"It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday."
"You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?" asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. I trained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing videogames inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped here yes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents,
"Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"
"Yes Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."

But moving away from a traditional classroom a living, breathing human being teaches and interacts with students daily is a disaster. (physical) attending school has hidden benefits: getting up (early), interacting more with peers, and building better relationships with teachers. Moreover, schools should be more than simple institutions of traditional learning. They are places where students (offer) counseling(咨询) and other support.
Those policy-makers are often fascinated by the latest technology in education and its potential to transform education overnight. , online education does not allow a teacher to keep a struggling student after class and offer help. Educational videos are unable to make eye contact or assess a student's level of (engage). Given these expectations, schools should not become permanently "remote". Technology, however (advance), should simply be a tool of a good teacher.
