As the aging population gets bigger and dementia(痴呆) is more common, more families are struggling with a complex question: How do you support a loved one with dementia, especially when you have a full⁃time job and several kids?
Reg Urbanowski may have an answer to this pressing issue: ROBOTS. He and his team managed to develop a new type of robot named the TP robot. Looking like stand⁃up vacuum cleaners attached to an iPad, they can be activated remotely via a smartphone and guided remotely by a controller app similar to the way a mouse is used on a desktop computer. All possess audio and visual communication capabilities, allowing the operator to be "in the room" to interact with Mom or Dad.
He believes that caregivers and family members can use a TP robot to "look in" on people with mild dementia. He says, "TP robots provide an effective solution for minimizing caregivers' burden, especially for those who have jobs or other out⁃of⁃home activities. "
Urbanowski and his team have conducted a study that involves providing TP robots for 15 Manitoba families. These robots are programmed to provide reminders of necessary daily routine like turning off the gas, taking medicine and having dinner. They will also help ensure that patients are getting the exercise they need to maintain their health and well⁃being.
Erin Crawford, Program Director of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, says she has faith that TP robots will prove beneficial, particularly when it comes to reminding people with dementia to do certain things at certain times. "It means that family members that can't be there, for whatever reason, know that those things are still happening," she says.
(1)、What inspired Reg Urbanowski and his team to develop such robots?A、Solving a puzzle in society. B、Taking care of the elderly easier. C、Helping aging people with dementia. D、Encouraging people they love and care for.(2)、Which is a function of TP robots?A、They arrange dinners for users. B、They turn on the light for users. C、They play games with users. D、They remind users to take exercise.(3)、What's Erin Crawford's attitude to the future of TP robots?A、Objective. B、Critical. C、Optimistic. D、Cautious.(4)、What does the passage mainly cover?A、The new characteristics of TP robots. B、A new type of robot for dementia patients. C、A practical way to relieve pain from dementia. D、The application of TP robots in the medical community. -

Johns Hopkins University researchers discovered precisely how spiders(蜘蛛)build webs in the dark. Their creation of a web⁃building playbook brings new understanding of how creatures with small brains are able to create elegant and complex structures.
Web⁃building spiders, which build blindly using only the sense of touch, have attracted humans for centuries. "The first step to understand that is to study the behaviors and skills involved," said Andrew Gordus, a Johns Hopkins behavioral biologist. "But until now it has never been done, mainly because of the challenge of detecting and recording the actions. "
His team studied a spider native to the Western United States. To observe the spiders during their nighttime web⁃building work, the lab designed a stage with infrared(红外线的)cameras and infrared lights. They monitored and recorded six spiders every night and tracked millions of individual leg actions. "Even if you record it, there are a lot of legs to track,"said lead author Abel Corver. "It's just too much to go through every frame(帧)and mark the leg points by hand so we trained machine vision software to detect the actions of the spider, frame by frame, so that we could record everything the legs did to build an entire web. "
They found that web⁃making behaviors were so similar across spiders that the researchers were able to predict the part of a web a spider was working on just from seeing the position of the legs. "Even if the final structure is a little different, the rules they use to build the web are the same," Gordus said, "which confirms the rules are in their brains. "
Future work for the lab includes experiments with drugs to determine which circuits(回路)in the spider's brain are responsible for the various stages of web⁃building. Corver said, "The work could help us understand larger brain systems, including humans'. "
(1)、What was the challenge in the previous studies on spiders' web⁃building?A、Testing spiders' brains. B、Tracking spiders' actions. C、Observing spider webs at night. D、Improving spiders' sense of touch.(2)、What is a crucial step in the study led by Gordus?A、Relying on the aid of special software. B、Monitoring the safety of spiders. C、Comparing varieties of spider webs. D、Designing a set of infrared cameras.(3)、What is contained in the future study according to Paragraph 5?A、The environment for humans. B、The behavior of various spiders. C、The drug for brain diseases. D、The brain system of spiders.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Spiders, Elegant Creatures B、Small Brains, Amazing Skills C、Spider Webs' Secrets Uncovered D、Spiders' Web⁃building Ability Developed -

On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we hadn't already known. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned round to find a wrinkled little old lady beaming at me with pleasure.
She said, "Hi, boy. My name is Rose. I'm eighty⁃seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" And she gave me a giant hug.
"Why are you in college at such an innocent young age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids. . . " "No, seriously," I said, "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me.
We became instant friends. Every day we would leave class together and talk nonstop. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets. "
At the end of the year, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years before. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
(1)、How did the writer react to Rose's first request?A、He refused her. B、He agreed. C、He paid no attention. D、He laughed at her.(2)、What motivated Rose to attend college at an old age?A、Her eagerness to be famous. B、Her desire to meet a rich husband. C、Her ambition to achieve success. D、Her longing for college schooling.(3)、Which words can best describe Rose?A、Humorous and positive. B、Experienced but stubborn. C、Enthusiastic but selfish. D、Outgoing and generous.(4)、What does Rose's story convey?A、Stay happy, stay young. B、Not regret, but change. C、Dream it, and make it happen. D、Never grow old, never stop playing. -

My mother made me what I am. She gave me the greatest gift a mother can give the desire to excel(超越). She taught me to read before I was four. She also encouraged me to write. When I was 10, I wrote a story and she sent it to a children's magazine. They accepted it and paid me some money. So I started earning money by writing at a young age.
I also learned a lot from my father. He'd say, "Stand tall, be independent and keep your eyes open. " For what, I don't know! He was quite good at telling stories, and I think I inherited my gilt for storytelling from him. But he could be pretty strict. If I went out with a boy, he had to pick me up from home so my father could question him inside out.
My father was 6 feet tall and good-looking, with great charm. He lost a leg in the war while serving in the Royal Navy, but never let it hold him back. When he was in hospital, ready to have his le g amputated, he said, not depressed, "Well, half a loaf is better than none. " After his death, I returned his artificial leg to the hospital, but walked away in tears, fit felt as if I was giving part of him away.
My parents had a son, Vivian, who died before I was born, so my mother put all her love into me. She also gave me an education I couldn't get at school. She took me to the pictures every week, to the theatre to see the Russian ballet whenever it came to Leeds, where we lived.
At 20. I moved to London to become fashion editor of Woman's Own and later a columnist on the London Evening News. The day I left home, my mother wrote in her diary that all the sunshine had gone out of her life when her daughter left home.

We say that technology is a double-edged sword—while it brings convenience, it also brings new problems. The sword of "social media" even has a gender preference in its damage. It cuts deeper into girls than boys.
Earlier studies have shown that spending too much time on social media is bad for teenagers'mental health. Constantly watching their friends show off "perfect" lives can hurt their own self-esteem. That's not to mention the problems caused by online shaming and bullying.
Jean Twenge, a professor at San Diego State University in the US, recently discovered an alarming trend: Since 2010, the number of teenage girls who suffer from major depression—showing signs like self-harm and suicide — has increased much faster than that of boys. In an article she wrote at The Conversation, Twenge said social media, again, was to blame.
For starters, girls use social media more than boys. Boys tend to spend their screen time on games, where they talk to their teammates through headphones. This counts as real human contact. Girls, however, simply type and browse through posts, which is a much isolated experience. " They're not having a real-time conversation with someone," Mary Fristad, psychologist at The Ohio State University, told NPR.
And when it comes to online shaming, girls are also more vulnerable than boys. "Girls face more pressure about their appearance, which could be exacerbated (加重) by social media," wrote Twenge.
Shannon McLaughlin, for example, is an 18-year-old from Blackburn College in the US. She shared with the Guardian how social media made her feel depressed. "I was constantly confronted by women with skinny bodies who were praised for the way they looked. This was only made worse by the diet fixes and skinny culture," she said. But McLaughlin found a solution. She started volunteering with the National Citizen Service, where she made face-to-face contact with people. "It's so easy to forget the importance of real connections when we have hundreds of people that we're trying to impress at our fingertips," she told the Guardian. And she hopes that others "look up from their phones and focus more on the world around them".
(1)、What did Twenge find in her recent study?A、Overuse of social media harms teenagers'mental health. B、Social media does more harm to girls than boys. C、Girls suffered more t rom bullving than boys. D、Online shaming and bullving are to blame for teenagers' depression.(2)、Why do girls tend to feel more isolated than boys online, according to Mary Fristad?A、Girls have less real-time interaction with people. B、Playing games allows boys to have more fun than girls. C、Girls suffer more pressure on social media. D、Girls usually desire more contact with others.(3)、The underlined word "vulnerable" in Paragraph 5 is closet in meaning to "____".A、adjusting oneself well B、fighting back bravely C、being unconcerned about something D、being likely to be at risk of something(4)、What does McLaughlin advise teenage girls to do?A、Ignore social media and stop following a diet. B、Connect more with the real world. C、Constantly take part in volunteer work. D、Make better use of phones for socializing.(5)、Which one is the best title?A、A gender preference B、Skinny culture C、Social media anxiety D、A double-edged sword -

While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt—why ears, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses ? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn't it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch(强度) does change after a heavy meal.
We usually give credit of the taste to our tongue, but do you know that unless saliva(唾液)dissolves something, our tongue cannot recognize the taste of the food eaten. Taste is nothing but the food chemicals dissolved in the saliva being sensed by the taste buds present on the tongue. Try to dry off your tongue and mouth with a tissue paper and then taste something.
Women are much better smellers than men. They are born with this characteristic ability and can correctly pinpoint the exact fragrance of the sample. We all can store almost 50, 000different scents(气味), which are strongly tied to the memories.
Pupils (瞳孔) do not respond to light alone, but to the slightest bit of noise around too. Thus surgeons, watchmakers and those professionals who have to perform a much delicate job do prefer to have a sound-free environment. Even a small noise can dilate(扩大) their pupils change the focus and blur(使模糊) their vision. If you do not wear glasses or contact lens due to having a 6/6 vision, you are just among the one third of the human population. It is now statistically proved that only one third of the population has perfect vision, rest all are either wearing glasses or are trying to read with a compromised vision.
Each and every one of us has a particular or individualistic or characteristic smell, which is unique to us, except for the identical twins. This smell is very subtle(微妙的) yet can be sensed even by a newborn. It may be due to this scent that the newborn recognizes the presence of his parents around. Many of us can pinpoint the sm ell of our significant friends and colleagues. A significant part of this phenomenon is guided by genetics but it is also modified by the environment, diet and personal hygiene. This all together creates the unique chemistry that is individualistic for each person.
(1)、We can learn from Paragraph I that ____.A、our hearing is as good as before we have a full meal B、all sensory organs are connected and can be exchanged C、sensory organs' functions can never be changed for their particular character D、we feel and learn about the world around us through our sensory organs(2)、What may happen after you have had a rich lunch?A、Your eyes become dim. B、You may feel energetic and fresh. C、Your hearing pitch may decrease. D、Your tongue may lose the function of taste.(3)、What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?A、Our tongues can't be dried while eating something. B、If your tongue is dried without any saliva on it, it will not work. C、A tissue paper is the only thing that can be used to dry our tongues. D、If your tongue is dried with a tissue paper, it may work as well as before.(4)、What makes each person different from anyone else except twins?A、The number of sensory organs. B、The sensitivity of sensory organs. C、The particular smell of a person. D、The style of one's behavior.(5)、What is the text mainly about?A、The functions of sensory organs. B、The connectivity of sensory organs. C、A newborn's senses of the sensory organs. D、The differences of senses between women and men. -

I had not hugged a friend or a family member for more than two years until recently when my sister-in-law flew in for a brief visit. For everyone's safety, we met outside. Despite the wintry weather, her hug warmed me from the inside out. It's strange, but only now do I truly realize how much I've missed embracing loved ones—the warmth that remains long after our arms have untwined(松开).
Growing up through war in my hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia, every moment was full of danger. On one peaceful morning, I had begged my mom to let me go outside after spending weeks wilting(蔫) indoors. She finally agreed. I was outside for only 10 minutes when I was caught in an explosion. I ran to my neighbor's house for safety and draped(悬挂) my arms around her neck just as my legs collapsed(瘫倒) underneath me. She hugged me with both arms and dragged me into her house. I was still in her arms when the ambulance arrived.
Thankfully, I made a full physical recovery, but the emotional scars never left me. Years later there was another explosion near my house. I was safely inside, but my father had left to buy a loaf of bread. He had only just missed the blast. When he came back inside, I gave hǐm the biggest hug imaginable. I was caked in tears as I held him tight.
That same night my parents managed to arrange my escape from our war-torn city. They desperately wanted at least some of my childhood to be normal. I was 16 and came to America on my own. A generous host family took me in and I began learning English and going to school. They had a large dog called Oscar. Over the next several months, I secretly struggled with feeling homesick and worried about my family back home. Despite managing quite well at school, I couldn't express my feelings. The only way I shared how I felt was by giving Oscar a big hug.
It is yet another sad aspect of our pandemic lives that hugging a stranger is the last thing on our minds. For many of us, even hugging a relative or a friend comes with stress and anxiety over risks and precautions(防范). Perhaps we have undervalued the impact of a simple hug. As I look back on my past, I count myself truly lucky to have been held, shielded and encouraged at some of the most key moments of my life by the almost otherworldly(超世俗的) power of a hug. I pray that in the not-so-distant future we can safely hold one another again -a friend, relative, or even a stranger.
(1)、Why did the author mention her sister-in-law's visit at the beginning?A、It reminded the author of her past hugs. B、It encouraged the author to hug strangers. C、It made the author think of her large family. D、It made the author forget the pandemic temporarily.(2)、What happened to the author when she lived in her hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia?A、Her father died from a blast. B、Her arms were hurt in an explosion. C、She was warmed by her neighbor's hug. D、She recovered quickly from the wounds of the war.(3)、Why did the author's parents send her to America?A、Their relatives lived there. B、They wanted the author to have a further education. C、They wanted the author to have a safe environment to live. D、They didn't want the author to live with them.(4)、What problem did the author find after she came to America?A、She was treated badly by her host family. B、She couldn't catch up with her classmates at school. C、She couldn't adapt to the new environment. D、She missed and worried about her family members.(5)、What is the author's purpose in writing this article?A、To express how she feels about war. B、To share how important hugs are to her. C、To introduce the ups and downs in her life. D、To complain about the impact of the pandemic. -
