    Resolving (解决) Conflict in Friendships

Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. That's because there isn't enough depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.

Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don't go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning, it's a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨). I've found I need a short cool down period so that I don't act in anger. For some, counting to one hundred before saying anything may be an option.

Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive. Yet it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.

Initiate resolution.Even when you think the other person is wrong, it's not a bad thing to say "I'm sorry if I offended you in that way." If you're honest and genuine in delivering your words, there's a good chance your friend will respond positively.

Most importantly, be loving in what you do. Try to focus on peacefully resolving the disagreement. It is not a most pleasant task to resolve conflict in any friendship.

    A. Focus on the bigger picture.

    B. Try to see the other person's perspective.

    C. Whatever you do, don't let things ride for too long.

    D. Be the first person in a fight to say sorry for your part.

    E. Offering a listening ear shows you value the friendship.

    F. Many shallow friendships end up being ruined after an argument.

    G. However, it is worth the efforts because it results in a deeper friendship.

Anyone can be late a handful of times, but to be the person who is always late ― that's an art, a frustrating art. Or, a side effect of your personality traits, scientists have found.

So what is it that causes some people to constantly miss trains, make it to the wedding just after the bride's shown up and regularly annoy their friends? And why is it so hard for us to fix it? "There are all sorts of punishments for being late, and the paradox is that we are late even when those punishments and consequences exist." said Justin Kruger, a social psychologist at New York University.

One of the commonest reasons why people are frequently late is that they fail to accurately judge how long a task will take ― something known as the planning fallacy(谬误). Research has shown that people on average underestimate the time to complete a task by a significant 40 percent.

Another trait is that forever-late-comers are more likely to be multitaskers. In a 2003 study run by Jeff Conte from San Diego State University found that out of 181 subway operators in New York City, those who preferred multitasking were more often late for their job. This is because multitasking makes it harder to have the awareness of what you're doing. Conte also discovered there is a personality type that's more likely to be late. While nervous, achievement-oriented Type A individuals are more likely to be punctual, Type B individuals, who are more laid-back, are later.

Admittedly, knowing all of this doesn't necessarily help fix the problem. But scientists are starting to work on strategies that can slowly improve our punctuality. For people who constantly underestimate tasks, breaking down an activity into detailed steps can help people estimate how long something will take more accurately. As for your personality type, unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to change that. But accepting that you need to struggle for it may just help. Acceptance, after all, is the first step to change.

(1)、What does the underlined word "paradox" mean in paragraph 2?
    A、Strategy. B、Argument. C、Solution. D、Puzzle.
    (2)、What is a possible feature of forever-late-comers?
A、They plan to spend more time on a task. B、They tackle more than one task at a time. C、They suffer from concentration difficulties. D、They have high expectations for achievements.
(3)、Which advice can be given to people who are always late?
A、Learn to accept who you are. B、Change your personality type. C、Divide a task into smaller ones. D、Keep to the timetable accurately.
(4)、What is the main idea of the text?
A、Time management contributes to success. B、Late comers should be severely punished. C、One's always being late is linked to personality. D、Changing personality helps improve punctuality.

If someone asked whether you like the arts, you'd probably say you do—at least in theory. According to a survey, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say the arts "lift me up beyond everyday experiences". However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum. Fewer than half actively created art of any kind.

The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed. Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work or do the chores, but even before the pandemic, most of us rarely, if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.

Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life. If you make time for consuming and producing art—the same way you make time for work and exercise and family commitments—I assure you that you'll find your life getting fuller and happier. Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your dizziness as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city and found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.

If you are among the people who feel that art is pure pleasure to experience and participate in, you might see it as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat art less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave art into your everyday life.

(1)、What prevents people from enjoying the arts?
A、Shortage of time. B、Avoidance of duty. C、Lack of interest. D、Art space unavailability.
(2)、What can we learn about the role of art according to the passage?
A、It explores mysteries of nature. B、It sparks emotional responses. C、It enhances physical well-being. D、It offers a getaway from daily life.
(3)、What will be talked about next in the passage?
A、Ways to integrate art into routine. B、Barriers to combining art and life. C、Forms of distracting pleasures. D、Benefits of engaging with art.
(4)、Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A、Art Journey: From Body to Mind B、Embracing Art: From Luxury to Necessity C、Art Pursuit: Transforming Dull into Full D、Connecting with Art: From Reality to Fantasy

Overlooking the Davis—Gant Varsity Soccer Field, a bed of overturned soil waits for further development. In a few years, this area will become a natural habitat and a playground for animals and residents. This peaceful area didn't appear naturally, but through planning and action taken by Catlin Gabel's Tiny Forest project launched by teacher Patrick Walsh.

Forests typically take hundreds of years to mature, with four stages of growth. "Tiny forests flatten out time through the planting of all four layers (层)," Walsh explained. The end result is a fast-growing, native forest in about 20 years. Over 600 plants from 43 species will be planted in the tiny forest, the first one in Oregon.

Walsh was inspired to build a tiny forest after hearing about this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hold in North America. He shared his vision with seniors in his class. The seniors researched tiny forests and made a proposal resulting in Clean Water Services donating 60 trees and $5,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Armed with these resources, Walsh and the students started working. "Something I didn't really expect was the outpouring of students' enthusiasm. Seeing students from all grades volunteered to contribute to the ‘dirty work' really blew me away," Walsh said.

Senior Megan Cover has been at the school since the first grade. "I'll graduate after working on this project, which is surely sad, but it's really rewarding and great to be a part of this project and to do my bit. We're creating this educational space for many young kids," Cover said.

Walsh summed up his goal of the project, which is to build a place where students can enjoy and learn about nature. "The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it will deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation and trees when they look outside at the forest."

(3)、How does Megan Cover feel about the project?
    A、Proud. B、Regretful. C、Grateful. D、Disappointed.
(4)、What does Walsh want the forest to function as for the students?

    Stargazing Festivals in 2023

As more areas grow brighter with light pollution, national parks across the country have become dark-sky havens. Every year, they host events like stargazing festivals to get travelers excited about astronomy.

    ·Bryce Canyon National Park—June 14-17

Situated in southern Utah, Bryce Canyon earned its dark-sky title in 2019. The 35,835-acre park is an ideal place to stay up late. This year, its annual astronomy festival includes guided stargazing sessions, lectures and "star stories" presentations, family-friendly activities, and even a performance by strings musicians in the northern Arizona-based Dark Sky Quartet.

    ·Shenandoah National Park—August 11-13

Conveniently located within a day's drive from two-thirds of Americans, Shenandoah National Park's night sky festival is a relaxing way to engage in astronomy. The nearly 200,000-acre park will host ranger talks, public stargazing sessions, lectures, presentations, and activities for kids. Staff are still working on this year's full schedule.

    ·Great Basin National Park—September 14-16

Great Basin is one of the least crowded national parks, making it the perfect place to quietly appreciate the mysteries of the universe. Its annual astronomy festival is scheduled for this fall and includes guest speakers, constellation (星座) talks, observatory tours, and a photography workshop. During the festival's unique "Art in the Dark" program, participants will get to paint in low-light conditions and experiment with how their eyes perceive color.

    ·Joshua Tree National Park—October 13-14

Joshua Tree National Park, as the International Dark Sky Association notes, is the "nearest convenient place to go stargazing under a relatively dark sky" for the 18 million people who live in the Los Angeles area. It became an official dark sky park in 2017, and each year, it hosts a night sky festival in the fall. As luck would have it, this year's dates overlap with an annular "ring of fire" solar eclipse. From Joshua Tree, the moon will appear to cover between 70 and 80 percent of the sun.

As a young boy, I was innocent. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various jobs when he was young and wove ( 编 织)his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.

As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa's stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.

When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆),probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease (阿尔兹海默症). Following the doctor's directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.

One weekend before my grandpa's birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was filled with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn't express himself clearly, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.

It was then that I noticed a box with some old photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball, wearing basketball jerseys (球衣), with grandpa cheering us on ten years before.

These were the adventures of my life, and they were14 memories. With cycling, the success or failure15 not on luck or conditions but on me alone.
