I am an art-on-the-cart teacher for now. My 8th-grade boys don't open doors for me. The girls do, however. So do the Gth,7th, and 9th-grade boys, but not those 8th-grade boys. It's a strange phenomenon that I'm sure is explained by science somewhere. But when I'm walking through campus with my rolling cart filled to the brim (边沿), my hands full, my backpack on,and the wind blowing the door, it's hard to pull it open for me. The boys just go on through without stopping to offer help. What these boys need is some empathy (同理心)! Looking at art can help with that.

Last semester in a photography unit for my 8th-graders, I brought out the "I am"character poem activity from my pack of printable worksheets to study the work of Dorothea Lange, the mastermind behind the Migrant Mother and other powerful photographs from the Great Depression.

As an art teacher, it is important for me to give my students experience connecting with works of art, which includes connecting with the characters and people in the artworks. Dorothea Lange was a photographer hired by the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration to document the lives of migrant workers, and displaced families. Because her photographs were government-funded, they were offered for free to newspapers across the country, and her photographs were seen nationwide.

She had a masterful way of capturing emotion in her subjects, so her photographs are an excellent way for students to practice empathy while also connecting with the art, the past, and the people in the photograph.

Once we finished with all of the group presentations, I asked what all of the photographs had in common and what we can learn about the photographer based on all of these photographs. This launched us into a lesson on Dorothea Lange, art during the Great Depression,and a debate over whether or not the camera has the ability to capture the essence (精髓) of a person.

(1)、What does the author think of the 8th-grade boys?
    A、Sensitive. B、Hardworking. C、Unsympathetic. D、Hopeless
(2)、Why did the author introduce Dorothea Lange to her class?
A、To appreciate the Migrant Mother. B、To help the boys relate to others. C、To dig into the Great Depression. D、To prepare students for a debate.
(3)、What can we learn about Dorothea Lange's photographs?
A、They were easily available. B、They appealed primarily to the 8th-graders. C、They were highly profitable. D、They revealed the essence of the subject.
(4)、What is a suitable title for the text?
A、Photograph: a Subject for Debate B、Shaping Identity with Works of Art C、Photograph: a Reflection on the Past D、Exploring Empathy with Works of Art

Here are four small places in England, all packed with delightful scenery and more.

    Lavenham Suffolk

In the town, ancient buildings lean casually into one another. As a result, wandering down the high street feels like walking through a fairy tale or a Hollywood movie as Lavenham has appeared in many Hollywood movies. Behind the high walls are several excellent restaurants, but first time visitors should go to the Lavenham Guildhall, where you can drink tea in a well-preserved Tudor room.

    Shaftesbury, Dorset

Home to Gold I Hill, the cobblestone street known as "one of the most romantic sights in England". Shaftesbury is a major charmer. The tiny Dorset town is also home to the ruins of Shaftesbury Abbey, built in 888 AD by King Alfred, a man well-known for creating England. Shaftesbury is also surrounded by a wealth of incredible countryside rich in picnicking potential including Duncliffe Wood and Melbury Beacon.

    St Ives. Cornwall

St Ives used to be little more than a traditional fishing village, but now it has developed into a popular coastal town. Its soft, sandy beaches regularly win awards and there are also plenty of top seafood dining options. The town has even gained a reputation as a serious arts center, with lots of outstanding galleries led by the Tate St Ives, which features attractive modern art exhibitions focusing on British artists.

    Castle Combe. Wiltshire

Recognized as the "pretticst village in England". Castle Combe is famous for its handsome honey colored stone houses and flower-lined lanes (小巷) which have decorated countless postcards and magazine covers over the years.

Paul's old clock was supposed to wake him up at six in the morning of August tenth, but, unfortunately, the hour hand stopped in the early hours again. Instead, Paul was awoken by the noisy breakfast-table talk of the Stephen brothers next door.

"Now, I've won the National Poetry Creative Award!" The older brother shouted loudly. "You have to do the housework for the coming whole week!"

    "Okay," the younger responded unwillingly.

Paul rushed down the stairs of his apartment to the news kiosk (报刊亭) by the street in his pajamas. Among the crowd of the seven o'clock Los Angeles, he was unique, in a funny manner, like a clown escaped from a circus group. Despite that, he caught the eyes of nobody. He threw a few coins into the glass jar and then grabbed the newspaper from the old kiosk owner. His behavior didn't frighten the old woman--he was the most loyal customer of her store for the past few years.

Paul liked to invent something, and he was fond of literature and had been dreaming of becoming an editor. He skimmed through the annual nomination (提名) on the front page of the newspaper, the brightness in his eyes turned less bright as he moved down the list of names, which eventually faded when he reached the end. He lifted his sight from the newspaper and started staring at the kiosk owner dully (无精打采地), an expression similar to that when he arrived. The old woman sighed—she was so accustomed to this lifeless look on his face but had prayed to see something new every August.

"Bad luck", with this, Paul slid away rapidly. When approaching the corner of the street, he narrowly knocked down an old gentleman, the kiosk owner's husband, Arthur, who once was a chief editor of a local famous magazine and now he was retired.

    注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After hearing what his wife said about Paul, Arthur decided to give him a hand.

    ……

One morning of next year's August, with the magazine he had edited in hand, Paul stood beside the news kiosk nervously to sell it.

We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that's our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them?

The butterflies' eggs lie on the underside of the leaves. The eggs themselves don't damage plants. However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off. Along with the hypersensitivity response, plants also produce something special, which can attract animals to eat the eggs, thus preventing damage in the future.

After the baby butterflies come out of their eggs, the caterpillar (毛虫) stage begins. Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers. The next stage is pupa (蛹). The caterpillars begin their change into an adult. They don't depend on the energy that the leaves provide. Finally, they become adult butterflies that have wings and move from one plant to the other. They feed on sweet liquid produced by flowers.

While on their search for food, the butterflies carry pollen (花粉) on their body. They are key pollinators that place pollen from one flower to another in ecosystem. Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators' attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing.

Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus, they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages!

(1)、How does a plant respond to butterflies' eggs?
A、It tries to get rid of them. B、It tries to appeal to them. C、It grows a little better with them. D、It protects them from being eaten.
(2)、When do butterflies cause the greatest damage to agriculture?
A、In the period of egg-laying. B、In the period of caterpillar. C、In the period of pupa. D、In the period of adult.
(3)、What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?
A、Describe the process of pollination. B、Stress the importance of pollination. C、Explore how adult butterflies develop. D、Show how flowers attract butterflies.
(4)、What can be the best title for the text?
A、Why do flowers need butterflies' pollination? B、How do plants defend themselves from pests? C、Are butterflies beneficial or harmful to plants? D、Are butterflies' life cycles similar to the plants'?

Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok, Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess (过度的) energy use, disrupted (扰乱) biodiversity or the heat island effect.

The 236,806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019, includes a floodwater management system and Asia's largest rooftop organic farm. It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.

The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it. The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces (之字形梯田)of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof, it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds. The excess water is directed into four storage ponds—with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.

The roof's terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted (把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.

The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too. Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university's sustainability curriculum. "Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on," says Voraakhom. "The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community."

(1)、What can we say about Voraakhom's work?
    A、It's short-lived. B、It's creative. C、It's demanding. D、It's time-consuming.
(2)、Why is the rooftop designed to be zigzag?
A、To store more water. B、To slow the speed of water flow. C、To plant diverse vegetables. D、To make it look more attractive than other buildings.
(3)、What can be inferred about the farm from paragraph 4?
A、It uses food as fertilizer. B、It improves students' lifestyle. C、It benefits the environment. D、It produces vegetables and fruits.
(4)、What does the author want to show by mentioning the outdoor classroom?
A、Students can learn hands-on knowledge on the farm. B、Farmers working on the farm can become professors. C、The farm prevents government from offering people jobs. D、The farm harms the relationship between university and community.

Orla Walsh was not exactly an example of good health. Back in 2014, the 25-year-old then was fully occupied with her work and graduate study in Dublin, mostly eating on the go. "I was feeding on quick, easy food like sandwiches," she said. "I stayed up a lot and the gym was a foreign concept for me for I did not work out at all."

That changed the following year when Walsh needed a convenient, reliable and budget-friendly way to get to and from class. "Driving was expensive, and public transportation in the Irish capital left much to be desired," she said. She turned instead to cycling.

At first, Walsh was doubtful. "I didn't want to wear the same suits like other riders because it looked strange for me," she joked. But as soon as she gave it a go, she was spellbound. The six miles she had to cover on her commute (上下班往返) each way didn't seem like so much. "I can't believe how quick and easy that was," Walsh said. "The more I cycled, the easier it got, and I started getting faster. I think what I enjoyed the most was the freedom the bike gave me."

In early 2016, she took the next step and joined a local cycling club, where she took part in long group rides. But something incredible was happening at the same time. As her weekly mileage (里程数) increased, her unhealthy habits fell by the wayside. She cleaned up her diet and cut back on burning the midnight oil. "I gradually got rid of that bad habit after joining in training," she said.

Then, thanks to the encouragement of other club members, she tried open road racing. At first, she was overwhelmed by the competition, getting dropped by other members on every climb. Yet she kept pushing and viewing the failures as learning experience. "I was enjoying the challenges and was more confident," she said.

(1)、Which of the following can best describe Walsh's lifestyle in 2014?
    A、Simple. B、Decent. C、Unhealthy. D、Fashionable.
(2)、What made Walsh turn to cycling?
A、Her curiosity about cycling. B、Her wish to break bad habits. C、Club members' encouragement. D、Poor means of transportation.
(3)、What does the underlined word "spellbound" in paragraph 3 mean?
