1、 根据下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever watched a silent television show and tried to predict how the characters were feeling according to their body language? The ability to understand people's body language is a skill that's almost born inside of us. . This skill develops as we grow older, which is called non-verbal communication.
Body language helps us communicate what we're feeling without saying much at all. Think about a time when you were very angry. Did you clench (咬紧) your teeth? Did your palms get sweaty when you were anxious? In most cultures, these cues (线索) that reveal emotional states are quite common. But gestures have specific meanings across different cultures. Take touch for example. . In India, however, the ideal way to greet someone is by touching their feet, not by shaking their hand.
In some places, gestures meaning hellos and goodbyes and touches indicating friendship and love are all the same. But the problem arises because some gestures have vastly different meanings in different cultures. For example, the "OK" symbol is used as a superb symbol in India, but in Turkey, this symbol is considered offensive (冒犯性的). .
So, what should we do? Should we not use gestures at all? Of course not. . No matter how much we try to stop ourselves, we will end up communicating non-verbally in some way or another.
, you'd better make a quick Google search or turn to a comprehensive book to better interact with the locals, and avoid offending them during your stay!
A. It was a very kind and thoughtful gesture.
B. So, the next time you decide to travel to another country.
C. When you flash the "OK" sign there, you're asking for a fight.
D. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate.
E. Even the smallest children can figure out when their mothers are mad.
F. Gestures are something that comes with the language of communication.
G. A general way of saying "Hello" in western culture is a brief handshake.

Not sleeping enough or getting a bad night's sleep over and over makes it hard to control your appetite. And that sets you up for all sorts of health problems, including obesity (肥胖), heart disease and high blood pressure.
The link between poor sleep and a greater body mass index (BMI) has been shown in study after study, but researchers typically relied on the memories of the participants to record how well they slept. Sleep apps on fitness trackers, smartphones and watches have changed all that. In a new study researchers tracked sleep quality for 120,000 people for up to two years.
The results showed sleep durations (持续时间) and patterns are highly variable between people. Despite that, the study found people with BMIs of 30 or above — which is considered obese by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — had slightly shorter sleep durations and more variable sleep patterns.
It didn't take much less sleep to see the effect. People with BMIs over 30 only slept about 15 minutes less than those less weighty people.
There were some limitations to the study, naps (午睡) were not included, other health conditions could not be factored in, and people who use wearable tracking devices are typically younger, healthier and from a higher economic status than those who do not wear trackers.
"These are quite pricey devices, and they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The results would need to be validated (确认) by the appropriate FDA-approved devices, and because the study is likely on younger people who are more economically well off, it needs further study whether that really applies to older folks with poor sleep." said Dasgupta, the associate program director.
However, Dasgupta added, a major plus for the study is that it did monitor people for over two years, and the results corroborated previous research and were "not surprising."
While we cannot determine the direction of association from our study result, these findings provide further support to the idea that sleep patterns are associated with weight management and overall health.
(1)、How does the new study differ from previous studies?A、It lasts the longest time in history. B、It uses apps to record participants' sleep. C、It specially improves participants' sleep quality. D、It relied on participants' memory to record data.(2)、What is Dasgupta's attitude toward the new finding?A、Doubtful B、Shocked C、Cautious D、Dissatisfied(3)、What does the underlined word "corroborated" probably mean in Paragraph 8?A、limit B、correct C、confirm D、combine(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Sleep Quality Varies from Person to Person B、Sleep Apps Are Widely Used to Monitor Sleep C、Young People Are Paying More Attention to Obesity D、Lack of Sleep May Be Possibly Connected with Obesity -

Every March, the country celebrates the achievements of women in American history. Even though these achievements go back a long way, most schools didn't start focusing on women pioneers and their achievements until recently. Today, most schools teach kids about the contributions women have made to our country. How did this change come about?
On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Clara Zetkin organized the very first International Women's Day. Inspired by American working women, the event took on the causes of peace in an effort to end World War I as well as women's rights. However, people's interest in International Women's Day still dwindled over the years. It gained momentum (势头) again in the 1960's when the women's movement caused women to wonder why they weren't included in the history books.
By the 1970s, more female historians began to look back at women's contributions in history. In 1978, a California school district started Women's History Week to promote the teaching of women's history. School officials picked the week of March 8 to include International Women's Day. It was so popular that, in 1981, Congress passed a resolution, making the week a celebration for the entire country. The concept of studying women's history continued to grow in popularity. In 1987, a group of women asked Congress to expand the celebration. That same year. Congress declared the entire month of March National Women's History Month.
Today, schools and communities across the country celebrate the month with special lessons and activities designed to teach the ways women have helped shape the US. The women who have worked hard to make Women's History Month a reality would like to see women's history studied all year, not just every March. In 1996, the National Women's History Museum was founded. It is a commonweal (公益) organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the various historic contributions of women. The organization is working with Congress to open a permanent (永久的) museum site in Washington D.C.

In Colonial Days, farm families worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer. People had little time for play. They did not have a chance to see other people as much as we do today. But sometimes they were able to turn hard work into good times and still visit with their neighbours.
In Virginia, Indian corn was an important crop. In late autumn after the weather had turned cold, the corn was ready to be harvested. Each ear had a cover of leaves called the husk (壳) . The colonists pulled ears of corn from the dry stalks and stored the ears of corn. Later, they held a corn-husking party.
On a clear night in November, neighbouring families gathered to husk the corn. They lit lanterns in a barn and piled the corn in high mounds (垛) on the floor. Then everyone went to work.
Most of the corn was yellow or white. But from time to time, a red ear was found. The person who found it was supposed to have good luck.
As people worked together, they enjoyed each other's company. There was cider to drink and cakes and cookies to eat. Corn husking was a favourite with boys and girls because they liked the chance to have a party.

It's a few weeks since both the United States and the European Union confirmed the hottest average global temperature ever recorded. Intense and unusual heat waves, along with fires, storms, and other extreme weather events, seemed to make 2023 the year when climate change became more disturbing.
Of course, climate change is more complicated than things simply getting hotter, but the overall warming of the earth is perhaps the most direct consequence of the carbon dioxide we have released (释放) into the atmosphere since the 19th century. What to do about this problem is the subject of this month's cover story, in which writer Sam Howe Verhovek and photographer Davide Monteleone take a closer look at carbon removal.
Ideas for how to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store or use it in some way have been around for a long time, but we've made little progress. Now we may be at the point where urgency, combined with technological advances, market demands, and creative vision, is making carbon removal a better choice for helping us manage the climate crisis.
Many environmentalists argue that carbon removal is a red herring(鲱鱼) that take our attention away from the need to dramatically reduce our emissions(排放). The first industrial revolution got us into this mess; maybe a second one can assist us with getting out of it.
(1)、What makes the year of 2023 more disturbing?A、The wildfire led to heavy forest loss. B、Various types of climate disaters occured frequently. C、The global temperature broke the historical record. D、Extreme weather caused a large number of death↵.(2)、What directly causes the warming of the earth?A、The rise of average global temperature. B、The technology of global carbon removal. C、The emission of carbon dioxide for a long time. D、The changes of complicate c climate in the late years.(3)、What's the author's attitude toward the progress of carbon removal?A、Unsatisfied. B、Unclear. C、Thrilled. D、Approving.(4)、Which of the following are some environmentalists most likely to support?A、Making carbon removal. B、Reducing carbon emission. The career of food editor Liu Dahua has been built on good taste and described as a recipe for success. The 83 -year- old has visited thousands of restaurants and catering(餐饮) companies, talking to hundreds of chefs. Since 1998, as well as writing food articles, he has also been taking food photos.
In October, Liu published a book, a selection of articles about food companies and chefs in China. Five months later, on March 21, his second book, illustrating food through the lens, was released.
"If the first book is based on my eating experience, the new one is based on my photo shoots," Liu says. The book collects 136 dishes from more than 50 chefs. What is striking is that it not only collects dishes from master chefs, but also selects the cooking offerings of the profession's rising young stars.
The dishes are divided into three types: time-honored and classic, new and creative, and the exotic(异域的). Unlike most food books, which usually provide the recipe of each dish, in Liu's book, he simply records when and where he took the photo, who the chef was, and his comments on the dish.
The photos are selected from tens of thousands that Liu has taken over the years, but ones taken before 2000 were all captured on film and were not saved in any electronic form. The earliest photo selected for the book is a "duck pyramid(金字塔)" taken in 2003 in Beijing. The dish was created by Li Fengxin, who had, at the time, just been named chef at a Beijing branch of Quanjude, one of China's best-known roast duck chain restaurants.

My Father, the Family Man
This year, my seasonal depression took me deeperssion the past, and a new portrait of my father came into my mind. He was a sometimes difficult, always determined man.
In my early memories, I was sitting at the kitchen table listening to my father yelling(叫嚷)about his challenges as an Italian immigrant. Back then, I couldn't have known his pain as he struggled to find his footing in this new land.
"We left Italy to give you three girls more opportunities for a better life," he said. "But we'd had a shaky start. The apartment your aunt had secured for us fell through at the last minute. It went to someone without children. So the five of us moved into your aunt's living room."
Bills mounted up. "And then I saw your mother's face was as white as a sheet." He said bitterly but soon stared down at the table to compose himself. "And the baby was crying. I worried that the houseowner would come knocking on the door."
Dad jumped to the end of his story, "What more can I say? I went looking for a job. I found one."
Armed with a few English phrases and determination, he'd walked for miles in a city he didn't know, stopping at every hair salon, asking for a chance to show his skills as a hair stylist, his pro-fession and passion. That's what he'd been doing all day, supporting for his family.
Forty years later in Toronto, he sat at the table, asking if I thought he'd provided well for his family. I answered. His eyes watered. Mine did, too.
(1)、What did the author think of her father in the early years?A、The father left Italy for a better job. B、He was moved by his father's story. C、The father's early struggle was in vain. D、He didn't realize his father's difficulties.(2)、What does the underlined word "compose" probably mean in paragraph.4?A、Show off. B、Cheer up. C、Calm down. D、Make up.(3)、What can we learn from the passage?A、The father had a big family to support. B、The author's eyes watered for her childhood. C、The father and daughter misunderstood each other. It was a tough situation. At 8,700 meters above sea level, Zhang Hong and his team members faced a difficult decision. Based on the oxygen they had consumed, they might not have enough to reach the summit of Qomolangma. Should they press on or turn back?
Zhang's guide Chen Tao made a quick decision that he and the two photographers with the group should immediately withdraw and leave their oxygen tanks to Zhang to let him finish the climb to the summit of the mountain.
The wind was strong, and Zhang was terrified. The three Sherpa guides didn't speak Chinese and their English instructions to Zhang were muffled by the high wind. And there was additional difficulty for Zhang — he can't see.
To walk on a path was often hard for the Chinese mountaineer. And there was no actual path on the mountain. Zhang had to follow the guides' directions precisely on every single step. The guides told him in which direction to go and the length of each step. But one mistake could cost Zhang his life.
At first, Zhang didn't want to continue. But Chen told Zhang "if you don't continue, this may be the last chance you have to reach the top of Qomolangma, while I will still have more chances". There was no time left for 46-year-old Zhang to argue with Chen and Chen gave Zhang a gentle nudge to hurry him on.
Zhang continued his climb with one guide in front of him and two behind. After several more hours' climbing, the guide leading the way told Zhang that he was standing at the top of the mountain. Zhang was first visually impaired person from Asia ever to conquer the world's highest peak.
On the rock face of the mountain, Zhang etched his name alongside that of Erik Weihenmayer and Andy Holzer, who completed the feat in 2001 and 2017 respectively. They are the only three blind mountaineers to have climbed Qomolangma.
