Older adults often suffer from mild cognitive impairment(MCI)(轻度认知功能障碍). It is defined as the stage between cognitive decline that comes naturally with aging and the more serious decline in brain performance—dementia(痴呆). MCI affects many aspects of cognition，such as memory，language，judgment and thinking.

Modern treatment for MCI and dementia involve mostly medications that are yet to be proven effective.But there are natural ways for individuals with MCI to improve their condition.Cognitive training，for instance，can help them develop their remaining cognitive skills.Improving their cardiovascular(心血管的) fitness can also lower their risk of further brain damage caused by blockage of blood vessels.

But in recent study，researchers at RMIT University in Australia found yet another way to boost cognitive function without using modern medications.By evaluating clinical evidence presented by multiple studies，the researchers found that traditional Chinese medicines(TCM) can cause positive changes in the brains of adults with MCI.They reported their findings in an article published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA) is a sensitive measure used to evaluate changes in cognitive function.MoCA is often used to test the effects of TCM on people with MCI.The researchers selected a total of 19 studies,16 of which contributed to data analyses.Three studies were placebo-controlled(安慰剂对照)，while nine compared a TCM herb with conventional medication.Three studies combined a TCM with a modern drug，and one study combined a known TCM with cognitive training.In two of the placebo-controlled studies，which lasted for 24 weeks，TCM herbs produced favorable results at the end of treatment.Overall，results suggested that certain TCM formulations can improve MoCA scores by 1.76 to 2.34 points.

Based on these findings，the researchers concluded that TCM herbs，owing to their active components，can improve cognitive function in people with MCI.

Majlis Jonsson is a 73-year-old woman living in the centre of Sweden's capital Stockholm.She leads an active life with her friends，travelling around the city and meeting in coffee shops.However，one issue causes her stress.

Sweden has been steadily moving towards a completely cashless society for a number of years.Cash is now used in less than one in five of all cash transactions(交易) in stores—half the number as five years ago.The law says shops can refuse to accept cash.Life can be hard for those unwilling or unable to adapt to the changes.Not everyone hates cash.Majlis Jonsson is one such person.She must go to a bank in order to pay her friend back for a train ticket bought digitally."I just don't know how to do it."

Niklas Arvidsson，Sweden's leading expert on the payment system，acknowledges that some people are in danger of being left behind，like the elderly."We've also got a problem with smaller businessmen in rural areas where perhaps the telecommunication systems are not working，" he says.

Is Sweden benefiting from all this？According to Arvidsson，it is."Electronic transactions are quicker and cost less in general and make the payment system more efficient." He also points out that "it is a little bit more difficult in general for the people to get away with not paying taxes or making small thefts without cash."

Of course，with an increase in digital transactions，the question of data security comes into play.As we freefall through an increasingly virtual world—and payments over the cloud instead of payments with paper—who has access to our information？It is a global problem with no easy solution.

But Arvidsson remains largely positive about cashless transactions."It's like a virtual infrastructure is being built...if a highway or a railroad has the capacity to bring people in business closer and increase output，the same thing will happen with technology.I really do believe that once the technology genie is out of the bottle，how do you put it back？"

As digital devices have taken over society，"keyboard activity is now often recommended as a substitute for early handwriting，" a new study notes.The idea is that typing may be easier for young children.

"Some schools in Norway have become completely digital，" notes Audrey Vander Meer，the new study's leader，who measures brain activity to better understand learning and behaviors.She works at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim.The human brain has developed to interact with the world in as many ways as possible，she notes.She believes that young children should learn to write by hand successfully，and，at the same time learn to manage a keyboard.

Using a pen involves more of the brain than using a keyboard，her new findings show.This is because writing and printing involve complex movements that activate more areas of the brain."The increased brain activity，gives the brain more ‘hooks' to hang your memories on，" she explains.

Think about it.The same movement is required to type each letter on a keyboard.By comparison，when we write，our brain needs to think about and recover memories of the shape of each letter.We also need to use our eyes to watch what shapes we're writing.And we need to control our hands to press a pen or pencil to shape the different letters.All of this uses and connects more areas of the brain.

Along the way，these processes appear to "open the brain up for learning，" says Vander Meer.So learning through only one format—digital—could be harmful，she worries.

Vander Meer also points out that taking notes by hand stimulates "visual notetaking". Rather than typing blindly，the visual note-taker has to think about what is important to write down.Then，key words can be "interlinked by boxes，and arrows，and supplemented by small drawings".

Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound space.You listen to your favorite songs，play loud computer games or watch a movie—all without other people hearing the sound.That is the possibility presented by "sound beaming"，a new technology from Noveto Systems，an Israeli company.

On Friday，the company presented a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver.Noveto Systems gave The Associated Press(AP) a chance to test its Sound Beamer 1.0 before its debut.The AP's Louise Dixon writes that listening to the device is like something from a science fiction movie.The sound seems so close that it feels like it is inside your ears while also in front，above and behind them.

Noveto expects the device will have many uses.Office workers could listen to music or conference calls without others' hearing.People could play a game，a movie or music without waking up others in the same room.Because the device does not use headphones，it is possible to hear other sounds in the room clearly.

The device uses a 3D technology that finds and follows the ear position of the listener.It sends ultrasonic waves(超声波) to create sound pockets by the user's ears.Sound can be heard in stereo or 3D.The 3D method creates sound on all sides of the listener.By changing a setting，the sound can follow a listener around when he moves his head.It is also possible to move out of the sound beam's path and hear nothing at all.

While the idea of sound beaming is not new，Noveto was the first to launch the technology.Its chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein says a smaller version of the device will be ready for release to consumers next year.

On a sunny but bitterly cold February day，a line of small children snaked their way from Dale to Dale Fort on the Haverfordwest estuary(河口). They were the last of more than 2,000 volunteers who over the last year have collected，stored and put seagrass seeds into little bags，ready for planting.These seagrass seeds were soon to join others on the seafloor a few hundred metres off-shore from Dale to recover two hectares of seagrass meadow(草甸). This recovery is the latest attempt to change a century of destruction.

In the UK，we can only estimate the loss but in Denmark，seagrass records dating back to the 1880s give a very serious and accurate picture.At the turn of the last century，fishing was vital to the Danish economy.It was known then that seagrass meadows were a vital habitat for young sea fish and so in 1908 botanist Carl Ostenfeld was asked to study the seagrasses，then found in all the estuaries and entrance of Denmark.That study provided a clear standard against which to measure the loss of seagrass in Denmark，a loss that currently stands at 95 percent.

Why does this matter？Seagrass not only provides a nurturing habitat for fish but also stabilises the shore and absorbs energy，reducing the impact of storms.Boat anchors(船锚) are one cause of damage to seagrass；seashore development another.But the main cause is river water pollution，particularly nutrients from fertilizer and dirty water.These excess nutrients cause algal(藻类) growth that blankets the seagrass，cutting out light，and then later，when it dies off and rots，removes all oxygen.

One of the important messages is，if you stop killing sea life and protect it，then it does come back.We can turn the oceans around and we know it makes sense economically，for human health and，of course，for the environment.

Michele Gentile，an Italian bookseller，is offering free books to children in exchange for plastic bottles to recycle.

Michele owns Ex Libris Cafe in Polla，a small town in southern Italy.He said he thought of the recycling program，because he wanted to inspire children in the small town to read and pay attention to the environment.

"My goal is to spread the passion and love for books among those people in Italy who do not usually read while at the time helping the environment，" Gentile explained.

The idea for the initiative(倡议) came after Gentile collaborated(合作) with a nearby middle school on an aluminum(铝) recycling project.Working together，the schoolchildren and Gentile collected enough cans to purchase books for an entire classroom.His new program took off from there and has already spread into northern Italy：Gentile hopes his work will continue to make headlines and become a worldwide initiative.

The free books come from customers in Gentile's shop who have donated money to purchase a "suspended" book.The idea comes from a World War Ⅱ practice in which customers would buy two coffees：one for themselves and another for the next person in line.Gentile has been using the extra books as part of his recycling initiative.

While Gentile's program is a great way to recycle and get kids to read，it also brings awareness to the growing problem of plastic waste.Single-use plastics make up around 26 percent of all the plastics in the world，only 14 percent of which are recycled.Plastics that end up in landfills take around 500 years to decompose(分解)，which is a major concern for environmentalists.

Cutting down on plastic waste is important if we want to better the environment for future generations，and recycling programs like Gentile's book giveaway are a great way to meet that goal.

 Many researchers view emotion regulation as the ability to enhance or reduce your emotions as needed.Others define it as a set of skills that help keep your emotional system healthy and functioning.We can learn to adjust what emotion we have，how intense it is，when we have it，and how we react to it.The defining aspect of emotion regulation is that it occurs when a goal is activated.

At the Body Hacking Conference in 2017，held in Texas，US，hundreds of science fiction fans from all over the world gathered to show off their body hacks.Rob Spence,45，had his right eye removed after an accident.Soon after，he decided to replace it with something more interesting."The minute I learned that I was losing my eye，I began researching how I could turn it into a camera，" he told Wired.

This is an extreme example，and body hacking doesn't always take things so far.For example，around the world，many people are choosing to get NFC chips implanted in their hands.This is the same technology as used in smartphones，and it allows users to pay for things or even unlock their cars just by using their fingertips.The chip is the same size as a grain of rice and can be fixed and removed easily without much pain.

Hannes Sjoblad，founder of a Swedish body hacking group，believes that these implants are just the natural next step for smart technology that is already in wide use，such as smartwatches.

"We are updating our bodies with technology on a large scale already with wearable devices.But all of the wearable devices we wear today will be implantable in 5 to 10 years，" he told Business Insider.

Sjoblad believes that such implants will become a regular part of our lives.Indeed，his group was asked to put chips in the hands of employees at a company in Sweden，allowing them to do things like opening doors，paying for lunch，and using the copy machine in the office.

"Who wants to carry a clumsy smartphone or smartwatch when people can have it in the fingernail？" he said.

Organic farms use no man-made chemicals to increase crops or control insects and disease and organic fields produce fewer crops，on average，than other fields.However，agricultural scientists in Switzerland have displayed the long-term effect of organic farming methods，that is，the organic methods improved the health of the soil and used half as much energy.

The Swiss scientists compared the effects of organic and traditional farming methods over a period of more than twenty years.They grew crops on four fields of land in Switzerland.Two fields were grown using traditional farming methods.The others were grown using organic farming methods.The crops and soils were similar in all the fields studied.

The study found that the organic fields produced about 20% fewer crops than the other fields.However，the farmers used less fertilizer(化肥) and energy on the organic fields.They found the organic fields were healthier.

The scientists say the organic fields have more nutrients in the soils.The soils in the organic fields also have more biological activity than the other fields.The organic fields have more helpful organisms and a larger number of different organisms.The organic fields have almost two times as many insects，including helpful insects.In traditional farming，chemicals designed to kill harmful insects also kill helpful ones.

The researchers say the findings show that organic crop production rates change little over time，and that soil fertility increases.They say the findings suggest that organic farms can help the environment by increasing soil fertility.

Organic farming is becoming increasingly popular in some countries.Many people believe that eating organic food is more healthful than eating food grown with chemicals.Some people are willing to pay more money to buy organic food.

When I was a little girl，a couple in our community went through a tragedy.They lost a young child and were in deep despair.Shortly afterward，my mother ran into the father at the local supermarket.He turned to my mother and said，"Your husband saved our life.He was the one more than anyone else who helped us get through this incredible loss."

My mother wanted to know what message of solace was given to lift them from the depths of despair.So back at home，she asked my father about their conversation numerous times，but my father insisted that he had said nothing.

A few weeks later the couple came over to our home.After sitting down for a few minutes，my mother gently said，"You told me that my husband helped you the most when you went through your awful sadness.What did he say？"

"Rebbetzin，your husband did not say one word.He just came over to our home and walked over to me without saying anything.And then he reached over to me，took my hands into his and hugged me.I looked up and saw tears falling from his eyes.You cannot imagine what that felt like.Your husband felt my pain.I was not sitting alone with my suffering."

My mother was quiet，absorbing the message this man was giving.

"No，your husband did not speak.I didn't need him to give me words.I needed his heart and soul."

When I recall this story，I realize the truth.

When having someone in our lives who is going through difficulty，we are often at a loss.What do we say? How do we make it all better? What is the greatest gift we can give to our loved ones?

We tend to think that we must fill space with words.But when you want to give of yourself，give a listening heart.Sometimes a person in pain needs you to stay silent.Just now that you are there for them.Perhaps you can't fix anything or take away the pain，but you can feel it.With the silence comes sympathy，understanding and empathy.And you share the load.

China's Ministry of Culture released the Fifth National List of Representative Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China on Thursday，(add) 185 items to the list，including the skills involved in making luosifen ， the iconic(标志性的) noodle soup from south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region，and Shaxian snacks originating Shaxian County in southeast China's Fujian Province.

Liuzhou luosifen ， soup dish，is named by some people as "durian(榴莲) of soup" for its strong smell.It (feature) rice noodles soaked in a spicy soup flavored by river snails(蜗牛) and topped with raw (material) including salted bamboo shoots，string beans，peanuts and tofu skin.Despite having the word "snail" in its Chinese name，actual snails don't (common) appear in the dish，but are used to flavor the soup.

Shaxian snacks are a shining example of Chinese food chain brands, most likely include foods such as steamed dumplings，noodles and huntun.

Now the local authorities (work) to standardize and modernize operations at the restaurants (turn) the brand into a successful and safe food business worldwide.Shaxian snacks have shops in 62 countries and regions including Japanese，American，French，Portuguese and Malaysian markets and (it) trademark registration has been approved in eight countries.

Recently，I introduced a news story in my class and asked the students for their opinions.Many of them 1 the view that "Mr A is right".

However，afterwards，when they looked at the Internet news page where most 2 were that"Mr A is not correct" and the number of people with 3 view was specific—thousands of people wrote in with their views，their faces 4 .I asked them how they felt when they found the 5 .Some said they began to feel 6 ，thinking，"If there are so many people disagreeing with me，then maybe my opinion is 7 ."
