There are days when I find it necessary to step outside my classroom and check to be sure that my name is still in the TEACHER space over my door. Sometimes I feel that I am a student in my classroom rather than the teacher. 

Seated in the classroom, my sixth grade students each held a different tool in the hand. The students discussed how words are like tools — they have the ability to build or to destroy, and they discovered how the right tool used at the right time for the right job can produce great results. I watched and listened with a sense of satisfaction. They got it!

A few days later, one of my students, Laura, had an unexpected outburst in class. She refused to work with her group. I asked her to excuse herself and to go to our next door team center. She marched from the back of the room to our classroom door — shooting me an angry look, and then slammed the door as she left for the team meeting room.

Minutes later, I stood over her. Being extremely angry about her disrespectful behavior, I was sharp in my tone and harsh with my words. When I paused for her response, she stated, "You're using your tool against me." I was speechless.

There are times when you are at a critical crossroads with a student and the road you choose will make all the difference. I knew at that moment the right thing to do was to kneel down next to her chair, and softly say, "You're right, Laura. I have used my words unwisely and unkindly. Will you forgive me?" She looked me in the eye and simply said, "Yes, I forgive you, Mrs. Ekre. I'm sorry, too."

At the end of the year, she wrote me a beautiful letter, attached to which was a small key — a tool, she said, for a language arts teacher who taught her how important words can be. It serves as my reminder of a lesson I taught as a teacher but one I really learned from my student.

When travelers are planning their trips to Thailand, the first stops that come to mind are often the most popular ones: Stops in Chiang Mai, for instance, and Bangkok are must-dos. But the beautiful Southeast Asian country has so much more to offer, in terms of urban wonders, than its most populous cities. Here, four lesser-known Thai cities that you should absolutely put on your travel list. 

Mae Hong Son

Where it is: On the border of Thailand and Myanmar, in the mountainous Thai province of the same name. 

Why you should go: Because of its nearness to Thailand, visiting Mae Hong Son might feel like experiencing a little bit of Myanmar — there are some cultural shared areas, and it's unlike anything or anywhere else on the planet.

Sukhothai 

Where it is: About 230 kilometers north of Bangkok, Sukhothai is characterized by its relative remoteness. 

Why you should go: Sukhothai is a UNESCO World Heritage City, due to its proliferation(增殖) of ancient temple ruins. In fact, the city was the birthplace of Thai architecture and culture, so if you want to get a good taste of Thailand's history, there's nowhere better to be.

Khao Lak 

Where it is: On Thailand's south-central coast. "Khaolak"translates in English to "Lak mountain", which is the highest peak in the area's hilly region.

Why you should go: If you're seeking a bit of peace, quiet, and calm beachfront, Khao Lak is the place to go. It's a change of pace from many of Thailand's other cities, which are exciting, colourful, and busy — and who doesn't need a moment to recharge every now and again?

Chiang Rai 

Where it is: Northern Thailand, in the mountainous province of the same name. 

Why you should go: Chiang Rai is Chiang Mai's sister town, and for all of the latter's popularity, Chiang Rai is absolutely relaxed. Like Khao Lak, this is a great place to sit back and enjoy the scenery.

One day Officer Jackson and Steve were discussing a serious case when they were informed of a disturbance（骚乱）in the nearby subway. So, they walked out of the station and got into their car. 

The two officers had expected they'd have to deal with an annoying beggar troubling the passers-by for money. But when they arrived at the crime scene, they were shocked at the beggar's appearance. The man had tears in his eyes and was sitting on the subway stairs, looking untidy and tired.

"Excuse me, sir," Officer Jackson said. "You can't stay here, nor can you bother the people to give you money. You have to leave this place. "

"Look, officers, " the man sighed. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause any trouble, okay? I lost my cane（拐杖）, and I can't walk without it. I wanted a few cents so I could get myself something to eat."

The two officers exchanged looks, knowing the man wasn't a disturbance but someone who really needed their help. So they promised to get him food, buy him a cane, and drop him home.

After doing that, the officers drove to the beggar's home, only to discover he had no home at all. He was just wandering in the streets and living off the leftovers he managed to find.

The poor man said his name was Eugene. When he was working at a skyscraper construction site, he was injured and became disabled, losing his ability to walk. Unfortunately, his disability forbade him from doing physical labor, and he wasn't well-educated to find a desk job, so he remained jobless. Because he couldn't provide for his family, his wife and children left him. "I don't have any hopes of changing my destiny（命运）, officers, " the man said.

But Officer Jackson wanted Eugene to change his life. "You're still young, " he said.

"You can't lose hope so soon. "He brought him something warm to eat, helped him take a shower, and gave him his warm boots. After his work, Officer Jackson drove Eugene to a shelter or the homeless and left.

Since that day, Eugene had never expected to meet the two officers again.

A few months later, Eugene was a changed man. 

Desmond Jumbam grew up in a poor family in Yaounde, the capital city of Cameroon. His mother worked 1  as a cleaner and cook for an organization to 2  him to school in Yaounde. 

"It was not always easy but my mother sacrificed a lot to 3 that I got the best education. In 2010, I 4 Harvard University with enough money for only one semester. My mother took a huge 5 for that."

With the help of family, scholarships and a job as a private teacher, Desmond was able to afford school fees for a "very 6 first two years" in the US. But having achieved so much in the country, Desmond has now returned to Cameroon to 7 his knowledge and skills there.

Desmond couldn't have got as far as he has without the 8 of his family. He said: "I will avoid common advice like ‘don't 9 and ‘follow your dreams'. At the risk of sounding 10 , I would advise anyone with big dreams to expect severe adversity（逆境）ahead. "

Everyone faces some 11  in getting to their goals and dreams, especially for those from 12  communities. Desmond was one of those children. He hopes his story will 13  children to know that it is completely 14  to achieve the dreams which may seem beyond their 15 , despite the severe adversities ahead. 

Travelling Economically

●Get a ride to travel destinations with friends or acquaintances（熟人）. If people you know are driving to a location you would like to visit, take advantage of the opportunity to ask them for a lift. Offer to help with gas money or, if you don't have any cash, offer a trade or service instead.

●Practice safe hitchhiking(搭便车) to get around.  Ask each driver several questions before getting in the vehicle, including what their name is, where they are heading and why they are going there. Follow your gut instinct（直觉）and avoid getting into a car with anyone who gives you a bad feeling. 

●  There are many ridesharing websites and apps that allow budget travellers to find a shared lift to their destination. These sites will also screen and identify the drivers, making the ridesharing experience safe and simple. Search for available rideshares in your area, which may vary in cost but will cost significantly less than travelling alone. 

●Join a free hospitality（好客）-sharing community. You will be able to chat with participating members living in the area you are travelling to and arrange accommodations before travelling. In addition to being able to sleep on someone's couch or in their spare room, you may find someone to show you around the city.

●Camp at inexpensive campsites. Camping can be a budget-friendly activity if you find the right park or site.  Visit http: // www. uscampgrounds. info/ for a comprehensive list of North American campgrounds, which indicates sites with a rate of $12 or less per night.

An 11-minute quick walk every day could prevent one in ten premature deaths worldwide, according to the largest ever study of its kind. Globally, one in ten early deaths could be avoided if everyone met just half the NHS target for moderate（适度的）-intensity physical activity, the pooled data analysis suggests. The results were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. 

Moderate-intensity physical activity is defined as activity that raises the heart rate and makes people breathe faster, but still leaves them able to speak. "If you are someone who finds the idea of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week a bit daunting, then our findings should be good news, " said Dr. Soren Brage, of Cambridge's Medical Research Council epidemiology unit.

Researchers looked at 196 peer-reviewed articles, covering more than 30 million participants from 94 large study teams. They then examined the link between levels of physical activity and the risk of heart disease, cancer and early death. 

At least 75 minutes a week of moderate -intensity activity lowered the risk of early death by 23%. It was also enough to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17% and cancer by 7%. "We know that physical activity, such as walking or cycling, is good for you, especially if you feel it raises your heart rate," said Prof. James Woodcock, also of Cambridge University. "But what we've found is that there are substantial benefits to heart health and reducing your risk of cancer even if you can only manage 10 minutes every day. "

The researchers calculated that if everyone in the studies had done the equal of at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity, about one in six early deaths would have been prevented. But even if everyone had managed at least 75 minutes a week, about one in ten early deaths would have been prevented, the research found. 

In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn't very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong. 

So in our school's annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded（僻静的） corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes. 

One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, "Oh, Mary, you're great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny!" But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, "Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don't want to, I won't force you. It's your choice. "

My mind was spinning faster than the windmill（风车） on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, "If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon. " I looked into Mrs. Sally's shining blue eyes and said, "Okay, I'll try. " I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was. 

In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered my lines and songs.

The big day came at last. 

At that time, Mrs. Sally came backstage for her final check-up and noticed my nervousness.

A few months ago, I was down with a terrible cold which ended in a bad cough. No matter how many different medicines I tried, I1 couldn't get rid of the cough. Not only did it2 my teaching but also my life as a whole. 

Then one day after class, a student came up to me and3 traditional Chinese medicine. From her description, Chinese medicine sounded as if it had magic power that 4 . I was5 because I knew so little about it and have never tried it before.6  , my cough got so much worse that I couldn't sleep at night, so I decided to give it a 7 . The Chinese doctor took my pulse and asked to see my tongue, both of which were new experience to me because they are both8 in Western medicine, where diagnosis relies heavily on9 . Then the doctor gave me a scraping（刮） treatment known as "Gua Sha". I was a little10  at first because he used a smooth edged tool to scrape the skin on my neck and shoulders.

The word "inquiry" （or enquiry） comes from the Latin words "in", or "inward", and "quaere", which is the verb "to question". So inquiry is not just asking questions, it is questioning into something. It has the quality of getting into something, going deeper, so you can see what you haven't been able to see before. 

When you begin an inquiry, you are deliberately setting out to search for what you don't know. You have to have the confidence to say that you might be able to figure it out for yourself. And in that process, you get a sense of real excitement and energy. That energy is both part of, and contributes to, what we often call "engagement（参与）". But in order to use inquiry to answer your question, you have to become good at knowing what you don't know. I would argue that that's exactly the opposite of what happens in schools. Classrooms focus on what you do know （or are supposed to know） and leave you unprepared to deal with the things you don't know.

In some ways, we are all surrounded by a bubble（气泡） of the known. When you "know" something, you identify how your model of the world fits with and explains what you see. Living in the bubble of the known is comfortable and comforting. You see what you know, and you know what you see. But to do inquiry, you have to get good at always looking for the boundaries of your knowledge, and at the limitations and contradictions within what is known. That is what scientists do. They are always looking for the limits, the boundaries and the points at which their theories fail to explain the world. Scientists, basically, are always looking for that "door" from the known to the unknown, where they can press forth and push and, in a sense, expand the bubble of the known. Inquiry is the action you take when you deliberately challenge the limits of your knowledge.
