As climate change quickly advances, many Middle Eastern countries aremaking the change from oil-based economies to ones that attract people fromaround the world—for travelling, business, work or to live.
One such example is NEOM to be built in Saudi Arabia. A key part ofNEOM is "The Line", a $725 billion futuristic city designed to house 9 millionpeople. It is a mirrored (镜子) wall-like building 200 meters wide and 500 meterstall. To be built in north-western Tabuk province, the project will spread 170kilometres from the Red Sea across deserts, mountains and valleys.
At first look, the project appears environmentally impressive. The city area isno more than 100 metres from any point in the city. A high-speed electric publictransport service makes sure every part of "The Line" is within 20 minutes away.Unluckily, as in many high-rise buildings with a large population inside, a vertical(垂直的) transportation would be needed, for it is just like a 125-floor building.
The project costs also seem OK at $55,000 per person. Let's say this isachievable in a country like Saudi Arabia and only covers infrastructure (基础设施). Even so, it remains to be seen how super-high-speed transport and mostadvanced infrastructure and services within the hugest building ever built can becost-effective.
The Line is planned for green living. Energy comes from renewable sources, waste water is reused, and it owns the latest "smart city"and mixed-use buildingtechnologies. Car ownership is avoided in favour of walking, cycling and publictransport.
However, the materials to be used and the building of such a big projectcould be very harmful to the environment. The plan says no one would be morethan two minutes from nature. But does this include the waiting times for a liftWithout careful design, a high dependence on vertical transportation may ruin thepleasure of walkable or bicycle-friendly areas.
(1)、Why will "The Line" be built in Saudi ArabiaA、To take a step towards green economies. B、To attract more tourists from all over the world. C、To house the increasing population in Saudi Arabia. D、To make preparations for a project known as NEOM.(2)、How does the author introduce "The Line" in paragraph 2?A、By showing an example. B、By designing drawings. C、By making a comparison. D、By supplying numbers.(3)、What do we know about "The Line"?A、It will surely cost S725 million to build. B、It will be wholly environmentally friendly. C、It will require a vertical transportation. D、It will be a 125-floor building for certain.(4)、What does the author think of "The Line"?A、Unclear. B、Doubtful. C、Indifferent. D、Hopeful. -

A great Monday
Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test. I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house. Ten minutes later, I was settled with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped over (绊倒) someone's foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted the jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment (尴尬). The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters (章节) of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn't long before there went the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheer leading team (啦啦队) in the dining hall. Then I couldn't help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finessed eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night's football game. After a little practice, we nailed the cheer, so we decided we only needed to go through it one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split (裂开) down the middle of my backside.
I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing, and I saw them pointing at my split jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.
Paragraph 1:
Then I saw Ryan running towards me.
Paragraph 2:
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan.

Four Habits to Help You Succeed
Nobody would like to experience failure. We all want to succeed. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand.
● Know your values.
Finding your values is in line with creating motivation. Pick a handful of things and write them down. Remind yourself of your values every day and reflect on whether you are honoring those values through your work.
● Pick a goal and focus on it.
Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of achievement, while adjusting well to your values. If you want to achieve your goal, focus is the key here. If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never finish your projects because they will take far too long.
● Set a time for success.
Set a date for success. Know when you hope to realize your goal. By setting a time limit, you are making the process realistic.
●
Failure can't be avoided when you take risks. By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early. Don't fall into this trap! Use failure. Treat it as a good thing, and go on.
A. Make the right decision.
B. The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.
Here are four habits to help you set goals and realize them.
D. Keep it realistic, while not giving yourself too much time.
E. Don't give up because of failure.
F. Sit and reflect on what you value most.
G. Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.

To provide visitors with a special experience, theme parks are putting more money into Virtual Reality (VR) technology. In fact, the lifestyle team of the website, The Week, attended the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo in Orlando. The purpose was to do a study on the implementation (实施) of VR technology on roller coasters. The team studied 23 roller coaster manufacturers (制造商) in Europe and found that eight of those manufacturers had implemented VR technology into at least one of their roller coasters. Based on their study, it appears that VR technology is already an important and growing factor (因素) in the future development of theme parks.
The theme park industry at first saw VR technology as a cost-saving way to put new life into attractions. In 2015, companies such as Six Flags began adding VR technology to their roller coasters. However, it soon became clear that there were many difficulties with implementing (实施) VR technology on the rides. Because of the time it took to provide riders with VR headsets (耳机), wait times and lines began to increase. Moreover, companies had to train employees (员工) how to set up the VR systems and make sure that all headsets were clean. This proved not to be cost-saving, so new systems had to be put into place.
Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Virginia, set out to solve these problems by developing a two-part headset for the ride Battle for Eire. The park worked with Falcon's Creative Group to develop this new technology, which allowed guests to be fitted with a headpiece while waiting in line. This shortened wait times and provided a cleaner environment. Falcon's Creative Group and Busch Gardens used creative thinking to improve an attraction that was built around VR.
According to TEA/AECOM Global Attractions Attendance Report, 2018 saw more than 252 million people visit the top 25 theme parks in the world. To keep these numbers, it is important that these and other theme-park companies continue to come up with new ideas to create and introduce great attractions—especially those that make use of new VR technology.
(1)、What did The Week find?A、Roller coasters were getting less popular than before. B、Half of the studied theme parks have used VR technology. C、VR technology may greatly influence the future theme parks. D、Theme parks have not realized the importance of VR technology.(2)、What happened after Six Flags used VR technology?A、A lot of money was saved. B、Many unexpected problems appeared. C、The number of visitors hugely increased. D、Visitors thought highly of the improvement.(3)、What did Busch Gardens do?A、It employed more workers. B、It creatively developed a headset. C、It chose to use its traditional technology again. D、It worked with other companies to build new theme parks.(4)、What did the author advise theme parks to do?A、To give up traditional technology. B、To work with other theme parks. C、To develop creative attractions. D、To build new theme parks. -

More and more birds are flying to settle at Qinghai Lake, one of the highest inland lakes in China, thanks to the protection efforts of local governments. Covering an area of over 4,000 square kilometers, Qinghai Lake is also the country's biggest salt lake.
Located in Qinghai Province of Northwest China, the lake is famous for the two islands at its northwest point—Cormorant Island and Egg Island. The two islands have plenty of floating grass and various fish, offering rich food sources to birds. The islands have become a paradise for different kinds of groups of birds and have been called "Bird Islands".
Each March and April, when ice and snow covering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原) start to melt, over 20 kinds of birds fly to the Bird Islands to lay eggs. During the months, flocks of birds cover the whole sky over the islands and bird eggs can be found everywhere. Visitors can hear the singing of birds from miles away. These have become a world-famous symbol of the lake.
To protect this paradise for birds and support calls for ecological protection, China set up the Qinghai Lake National Natural Reserve at the end of 1997. Meanwhile, the State has pointed out that the Bird Islands and Spring Bay of Qinghai Lake were central reserves.
Inspectors and conservators often patrol (巡逻) the lake, enriching local residents' knowledge of related laws and spreading knowledge about animal protection to visitors. They are making great efforts to call on people to love and protect the birds. At the same time, they have built special fences around the island area to prevent wolves, foxes and other carnivores, as well as illegal hunters from breaking up the birds' building nests, laying eggs and breeding (繁殖). As a result, more and more birds are coming to the islands for sheltering and breeding.
