One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom. "I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.

With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.

"Tom! " she cried, "Help!"

No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.

Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.

As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

Believe it or not, a group of US teens could perform The Mermaid, a classical Chinese play for children, fully in Chinese. The 15 US teens, (age) between 12 and 17, stood out from more than 200 children and spent almost two years (practise), according to Chen Suhan, director and producer of the play's US version. The show's success is thanks the China-US Youth Theater Exchange Program. The program combines theater and Chinese language learning to promote language education and youth (exchange) between China and the US. "All the kids (work) so hard over the last two years, and I feel so proud to see their amazing performance," Chen said. For American teens, coming to China to perform a Chinese play is unforgettable experience. "Theater for children and young people (be) a ‘world language' that enables children of different countries and race (communicate) without words. Theater for children and young people is the seed of innocence, (kind) and beauty. It is also the seed of love, culture and friendship brings beauty," remarked Feng Li, president of China National Theater for Children.

My real research started at the New York Botanical Garden. I met a person who is a paleobotanist (古植物学家), which means that he 1  prehistoric plants. My novel centers on Merwin and Louise, two little Sycamore 2  who began life during the Cretaceous Period.

Sycamore trees are called fossil species, which means they have been 3 since the time of the dinosaurs. They are 4 to modern trees we see in forests today. The Sycamore tree also makes those kind of seed balls, a little bit like a nursery (托儿所), like all these 5 in there together. In most of my stories. I write about children who get 6 from their parents and find their way in the world. That's kind of what Sycamore seeds and other seeds do. It was fun trying to 9  all the different places these two little seeds could go. I wanted them to go underwater. Drawing pictures underwater is so hard. 10  the whole scene with King Seaweed was really fun.

What surprised me the most was the idea that 11  are really communities. Trees communicate with each other with a mycelial (菌丝) system under the ground that 12  everything. It felt like there were interesting parallels (相似之处) with us, because we also live in 13 , and we try to help each other. However, there are sometimes 14  from outside, and we have to find out ways to 15 . Plants are doing the same thing.

The benefits of walking are many, but deciding how many miles to cover and how much time to spend walking each day is another matter.

Studies have shown that the average American takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps daily doing everyday tings — about 1.5 to 2 miles.  But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises most adults to aim for 10,000 steps a day or about 5 miles. And the recommendation contributes to more positive health outcomes.

 You can measure your efforts in quantities of time instead. "As a walker, you should aim for at least 30 minutes per day, or a total of 150 minutes per week," says Austin, a licensed psychotherapist. What's more, if 30 minutes of walking is unrealistic for you to do all at once, then breaking it up into three short, 10-minute sessions.   

It may also be helpful to health to make walking a part of one's daily routine. People can take the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the other end of the lot and walk a further distance to a store's entrance when shopping.  Then walk the rest of the way home. All these additional steps can be acquired creatively, beyond fixed walking time.

On top of such physical benefits, walking has been shown to improve sleep and mental health including mood and self-esteem.  Therefore, it is free and well accepted by the majority of people. If one is ready to improve overall levels of fitness, walking ticks all the right boxes.

Around the country and around the world, there is no shortage of human suffering. Poverty, disease, violence, hurricanes, wildfire and more are constantly troubling humanity（人类）, and even our best efforts thus far can't solve all of everybody's needs. Many are looking for places to cut cost, and one of the first places that comes up in conversation is too much spending on space exploration. What good is it to conduct micro-gravity experiments repeatedly when children are starving? Why launch so many space-related projects when nuclear war threatens our planet?

This is a line of thinking that has been coming up throughout history. Yes, it's short-sighted, in that it fails to recognize that our greatest problems require long-term investment(投资）, and that society's greatest advances come about through hard work, research, development of decades after that is made. Investing in science is investing in the betterment of humanity.

Over these years, much of the results of the space research have been adapted to be applicable to our daily lives. For example, NASA's advancements in the areas of robotics have given manufacturers(制造商) an additional basis for the development of more advanced artificial limbs. Additionally, certain nutritional enrichment ingredients that were developed by NASA have been integrated into baby food formula.

Space technology has also helped improve economies. Within the next three years, the space exploration and space tourism industry are expected to be valued at 3 trillion USD. It is true that for every dollar we spend on the space program, the US economy receives about $8 of economic benefit. Space exploration can also serve as a motivation for children to enter the fields of science and engineering.

To many people, the idea of space travel may still seem far from practical. However, I believe that it is important that we keep going forward or we'll risk delaying further discoveries and technological advancements that will be beneficial to us.

1.3 million people in the Netherlands are older than 75 years — and one large supermarket chain is making sure they're not getting too lonely in their elder years.

The Dutch government with its campaign, "One Against Loneliness", has encouraged organizations, towns, companies, and individuals to find solutions. Jumbo, the second largest Dutch supermarket chain, is doing its part with creative chat checkouts (付款台). 

The idea for the "Kletskassa", which translates to "chat checkout", started more than two years ago — and in the summer of 2019 the first Kletskassa was opened in Vlijmen in Noord-Brabant. 

This resulted in many positive reactions from customers — and now Jumbo is swelling the project further: By this time next year, there will be chat checkouts in 200 stores across the country where more people can go for a conversation. When choosing the stores, areas where loneliness is a major factor are carefully considered. 

Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd, CCO of Jumbo and the driving force behind the campaign against loneliness, is closely involved (参与) in the project. She said, "Many people, especially the elderly, sometimes feel lonely. As a family business and supermarket chain, we are at the heart of society." 

"Our stores are an important meeting place for many people and we want to play a role in identifying and reducing loneliness. We do this in various ways, including our Kletskassas. We are proud that many of our cashiers like to take a seat behind a Kletskassa. They support the project and want to help people to make real contact with them out of interest." 

"It is a small action, but very valuable, especially in a world that is digitizing (数字化) and getting faster and faster."

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn't fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn't get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

Wisconsin's Great Lakes are home to great lighthouses. Here are some lighthouses worth visiting along Lake Michigan, from south to north.

Wind Point, Racine

This 108-foot lighthouse on a point north of Racine was built in 1880. It's open for tours and climbs up the tower from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Sunday of the month, June through October, and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Saturday before that Sunday, July through September. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids aged between 6 and 11. The park and beach around the lighthouse are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

North Point, Milwaukee

This 74-foot lighthouse alongside a Queen Anne style keeper's quarters is a landmark in the city's Lake Park. After the coast guard decommissioned (停用) it in 1997, it stood vacant (空置的) until a friendly group restored the structure and opened it as a museum in 2007. Tours are now offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday year round, plus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the summer. Tours cost $8 for adults, $5 for seniors (65+) and $5 for students and kids (5-11).

Port Washington Breakwater (防波堤)

This Art Deco-style lighthouse replaced an older wooden structure in 1935 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. Tours aren't available of the small structure, but visitors can walk along the 2,500-foot breakwater to get a closer look.

Rawley Point, Two Rivers

This lighthouse is worth a visit not only for its steel tower rising 113 feet above the beach, but also for its location in Point Beach State Forest. Tours are not available of the working lighthouse, but it's viewable and photographable from the beach. In addition to six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the state forest has 17 miles of hiking trails to explore.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business--a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, "I don't have any special skills to share."

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" She grinned, "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here." Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

"You two? The talent show for the food bank?" My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. "Abig occasion." Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. "Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match." Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
