The Africa Sourcing and Fashion Week held in Ethiopia in November attracted over 5,000 visitors. Though the number is not extremely high, the continent is becoming a new global fashion leader, according to a UNESCO report.
Although most African fashion businesses are small and medium-sized enterprises (企业), the report identified a growing number of high-fashion brands concentrated in key markets on the continent. What makes African fashion unique is its authenticity (真实性), according to Kenyan designer Aulga Nato. "If you check most fashion houses elsewhere in the world, they have done so much that they have less creativity in what they are putting out now. Africa, on the other hand, is rich in cloth. We are huge cotton growers, and we are rich in every single way. That's our fashion," she explained.
Africa is a major producer of raw materials (原材料) for the fashion industry, with 37 out of 54 African countries producing cotton and textile exports from the continent averaging $15.5 billion (about 110.2 billion yuan) a year. The continent also has a huge animal population from which it sources animal skins. However, there's a huge shortage of chemicals to make the materials needed to treat the leather (皮革) from animals used in the clothing industry. And the continent still faces challenges related to the movement of people.
Despite these challenges, African designers are giving their best to their work and leading the world in sustainable fashion and practices. African governments have also taken measures to help designers in achieving their aims. It seems that their efforts have paid off. After checking clothing exhibits at a fashion event, Ghanaian exhibitor Solomon Dodoo noticed that every single cloth is unique and there are no two pieces of cloth that look alike.
(1)、What makes Africa have an unusual fashion?A、Its increasing tourism. B、Its huge cotton production. C、A report from the UNESCO. D、The authenticity of its fashion.(2)、What challenge does African fashion face?A、A great need for animal skins. B、Lack of chemicals for treating leather. C、The development of cotton production. D、Shortage of creativity among designers.(3)、Why do African designers overcome challenges successfully?A、They are supported by African governments. B、They abandon unique and sustainable fashion. C、They lead the world in the clothing industry. D、They check clothing exhibits at a fashion event.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、African Fashion is Popular in the World B、African Designers Face Difficulties in Fashion C、African Countries Have Materials for the Fashion Industry D、Africa's Advantages Promote Its Fashion Industry's Success -

Take a period of limited rainfall. Add heat. And you have what scientists call a ‘hot drought' — dry conditions made more intense by the evaporative power of hotter temperatures.
A new study, published in the journal Science Advances, Wednesday, finds that hot droughts have become more common and severe across the western U.S. as a result of human-caused climate change. "The frequency of compound warm and dry summers particularly in the last 20 years is unprecedented," said Karen King, lead author of the study and an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
For much of the last 20 years, western North America has been under the control of a huge drought that has strained crop producers, city planners and water managers. Scientists believe it to be the driest period in the region in at least 1,200 years. They reached that determination, in part, by studying the rings of trees collected from thousands of sites across the Western U.S..
Cross-sections or cores of trees, both living and dead, can offer scientists windows into climate conditions of the past. Dark scars can show where fires have burned. Pale rings can indicate insect outbreaks. "Narrow rings mean less water," said King, a dendrochronologist, who specialized in tree ring dating. "Fatter rings, more water." Scientists have looked at tree ring widths to understand how much water was in the soil at a given time. King and fellow researchers did something different. They wanted to investigate the density (密度) of individual rings to get a picture of historical temperatures. In hotter years, trees build thick walls to protect their water.
By combining that temperature data with another tree-ring-sourced dataset looking at soil moisture (湿度), the researchers showed that today's hotter temperatures have made the current western huge drought different from its past ones.
It also suggests that future droughts will be worsened by higher temperatures, particularly in the Great Plains, home to one of the world's largest aquifers, and the Colorado River Basin, the source of water for some 40 million people.
(1)、What led to hot droughts?A、Abundant rainfall. B、Climate change. C、Appropriate temperatures. D、Dry summers.(2)、What does the underlined word "strained" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Protected. B、Surprised. C、Stressed. D、Helped.(3)、What do the researchers find about hot droughts?A、They will not happen in the future. B、They are affected by those tree rings. C、They are similar in intensity to past droughts. D、They have become more frequent and severe.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To entertain readers with a fictional story. B、To persuade readers to protect environment. C、To inform readers of severity of hot droughts. D、To share personal experiences and reflections. -

Adding to the achievements of a remarkable year, Taylor Swift has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2023.
Already a superstar before 2023, Swift's career has reached new heights thanks to the beginning of her Eras Tour that brought her 3.5-hour performance to 66 shows in 23 cities across North America, Argentina and Brazil. Promoted by her tour, Swift has been named the most-streamed female artist in the history of Spotify and Apple Music. According to Billboard, the tour made about $900 million (about 6.4 billion yuan) in 2023. In addition, the tour's movie Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the biggest concert movie of all time, taking more than $250 million globally.
As she was declared (宣布) a billionaire by Bloomberg in November, a hidden "Taylor Swift economy" also promoted sales for business owners across the US. From soaps to a cruise inspired by her different "eras", interest in Swift-related products went way up.
Apart from her financial contributions, Swift made a significant cultural impact by taking back control of her music. In 2019, her old record label, Big Machine, sold the master tapes of her first six albums (专辑) to Scooter Braun. The sale meant that she didn't have the rights to the albums. In response to this, Swift began re-recording her first six albums, tagging (加标签于) them "Taylor's Version". This move stressed her belief that artists deserve to own their work. "It's all in how you deal with loss," she told Time. "I respond to extreme pain by resisting."
Heading into 2024, Swift will start the Eras Tour again in Japan and Australia. As USA Today noted, "Her current top has been a long time coming, but it may also be just beginning."
(1)、What do we know about Taylor Swift?A、She broke a new record on her tour. B、She toured South America before 2023. C、Her achievements received great recognition. D、Her performance began with the Apple Music.(2)、How did Taylor Swift benefit from her Eras Tour?A、She proved herself to be an artist. B、She learned to make some products. C、She got rich and regained album rights. D、She sold her master tapes to a company.(3)、What can we learn about Taylor Swift from the last paragraph?A、She will end her music career. B、She will continue her Eras Tour. C、She will reach her top in Japan. D、She will make a record in Australia.(4)、What is the author's attitude towards Taylor Swift?A、Admirable. B、Uncaring. C、Doubtful. The notice was posted next to the mailboxes in the apartment building I had just moved into. "A Mitzvah (善行) for Mrs. Green," it read, "Sign up to drive Mrs. Green in 3B home from her chemotherapy (化疗) treatments twice a month."
Since I wasn't a driver, I couldn't add my name, but the word "mitzvah" was always wandering in my thoughts after I went upstairs. It's a Hebrew word that means "to do a good deed". But according to my grandma, it also had another meaning. This was the one she was always pointing out to me because she noticed that I thought it a shame to let people do things for me. "Linda, it's a blessing to do a mitzvah for someone else, but sometimes it's a blessing to let another person do something for you."
One evening, snowflakes had been falling past my window for several hours when the time to leave for class came. I labored to the bus stop, reaching it just as a bus went by. For an hour, I prayed desperately that a bus would come. Then I gave up. The wind at my back pushed me towards home. Even if I wanted to ask someone for a good deed, which I did not, there wasn't a soul on the street.
But as I pushed the door of my apartment open, I found myself face to face with a woman at the mailbox with a set of keys in her hand. Obviously she had a car and was going out. In that split second, desperation overcame my pride and I blurted (脱口而出), "Could you possibly give me a lift?" An odd look crossed her face and she agreed without hesitation.
On our way to my school, she spoke so warmly that I felt comfortable. "You remind me of my grandmother." I said. A slight smile crossed her lips. "Just call me Grandma Alice as my grandchildren do." When she dropped me off, I thanked her again and again.

How to be more productive
Getting things done isn't working all day at 100 miles an hour.. And the following tips can definitely help you.
Smaller tasks like answering emails are "shallow work". Try to be more conscious of what your shallow tasks are, and give yourself permission to block them out for a while so you can focus on the important tasks that require "deep work".
Call it a day
For good productivity, be strict about when your working day is over, and when you get to the end of your planned work session, ease yourself into a more relaxed state. Look through your unfinished work.. Then close that textbook or laptop and say something out loud like "Shutdown complete!" After that? Have some fun. Give your mind the rest it's earned.
Find your top level goal
. Find the big thing that we could call your life's purpose, like inspiring others, or helping people in society. Put that at the top. On the next level you'll have mid-level goals like passing an exam. The goals below-it-should all feed into your top-level. They'll be smaller, more practical things — perhaps writing an email, or doing some research. If they don't help with achieving your top goal, then get rid of them!
Make your breaks smarter
Time-management master Francesco Cirillo says that for every 25 minutes of intense concentration, you should take five off to do nothing at all, which gives the brain time to recover and keeps your productivity high. . Move around, stare out of a window.
A. Shut out the shallow
B. Make out the shallow
C. Find some pictures of kittens and puppies first
D. Organise your priorities by making a pyramid of goals
E. In the five-minute breaks, don't jump on your phone
F. Write a short plan of how you'll tackle it tomorrow
G. Looking for ways to do less and get more done actually makes more sense

The sporty all-electric car from the Netherlands resembles a BMW car, but is unique: It captures more carbon than it emits. "Our end goal is to create a more sustainable future," said Jens Lahaije, finance manager for TU/ecomotive, the Eindhoven University of Technology student team that created the car. Called ZEM, for zero emission mobility, the two-seater houses a Cleantron lithium-ion battery (锂电池) pack, and most of its parts are 3D-printed from recycled plastics, Lahaije said. The target is to minimize carbon dioxide emitted during the car's full lifespan, from manufacturing to recycling, he added.
Battery electric vehicles emit virtually no CO2 during operation compared with combustion-engine (燃烧式发动机) vehicles, but battery cell production can create so much pollution that it can take EVs tens of thousands of miles to achieve "carbon parity (相同)" with comparable fossil-fueled models.
"Direct air capture is a fairly new method of cleaning the air by capturing CO2 into a filter (过滤器). We have made use of this innovative technology and implemented this in our car. The idea is very simple: while driving, air will move through our self-designed filters and the CO2 will be captured and stored." ZEM uses two filters that can capture up to 2 kilograms (4.41 lb) of CO2 over 20,000 miles of driving, the Eindhoven team estimated. They imagine a future when filters can be emptied at charging stations, based on the fact that there are a nationwide charging infrastructure, which includes residential, commercial and public chargers across the country installed by the Energy Department, automakers and private businesses.
The students are showing their vehicle on a US promotional tour to universities and companies from the East Coast to Silicon Valley, hoping to attract more financial support.
It is hard to tell where the future will take the electric vehicles, but it is clear that they hold a lot of potential for creating a more sustainable future. In the end, only time will tell what road electric vehicles will take in the future.
(1)、What advantage does the newly-designed car have?A、It looks like a BMW car. B、It is a drive-less car. C、It's a carbon-eating electric vehicle. D、It purifies air automatically.(2)、What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A、The function of filters. B、The benefits of direct air capture. C、The application prospect of the technology. D、The operating principle of the technology.(3)、What problem do the student team face according to the passage?A、Lack of research fund. B、Unpredictable application prospect. C、No permission from the government. D、Strong objection from the car companies.(4)、What is Jens Lahaije's attitude toward the future of the sporty all-electric car?A、Doubtful. B、Confident. C、Concerned. D、Pessimistic. -

Of all the creatures on the planet, the narwhal is one of the strangest looking. It's a whale which has a large protruding tusk coming out of its head; that's how it got, its nickname, the unicorn of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Canada, Russia and East Greenland. However, experts say some populations of narwhal could be extinct by 2025, and it's all because of noise pollution.
Narwhals rely on echolocation, which they use to find food and navigate their surroundings. The animal produces a sound wave which bounces off an object. They pick this reflected sound up through their lower jaw, and information on features like size and speed passes to their ears. However, increase in human marine activity, as well as climate change, has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier, which means it's more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound. Susanna Blackwell, who studies the effects of underwater noise on marine animals, told the BBC that there is noisier activity in the Arctic Ocean than ever because, as sea ice melts, new navigation routes are opening. And while icebergs breaking and creaking have been part of the ocean soundscape for hundreds of years, man-made noise is much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
Research published inScience Advances in 2023 recorded the reactions of narwhals to the simulated (模拟的) noises of oil expeditions made by a patrol vessel (巡逻船). The scientists tagged and tracked the creatures and found that, on hearing these sounds, they ended deep dives and stopped clicking, the echolocation signal they use for finding food underwater. This is the same reaction narwhals have to orcas, who hunt them, meaning human-made noise could trigger the creature's "threat button".
So, what can we do? Charlotte Findlay, a postdoctoral fellow at Aarhus University, says "noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down."
(1)、What can we learn about the narwhal from the first paragraph?A、It has a large tusk from its jaw. B、It currently faces the risk of dying out. C、It lives in the southern hemisphere. D、It sounds different from other whales.(2)、What does Susanna Blackwell's study show?A、Narwhals navigate their surroundings by echolocation. B、Sea ice melting makes the ocean noisier than ever. C、Man-made noise has a greater impact on marine animals. D、Narwhals are not used to icebergs breaking and creaking.(3)、What does the research mentioned in paragraph 3 imply?A、A patrol vessel was applied in the research. B、Orcas are the natural enemy to narwhals. C、Noises would change the echolocation signal. D、Scientists tagged narwhals under the water.(4)、What's the best title for the passage?A、Survival of Narwhal threatened by man-made noise. B、Experts predicting the extinction of the narwhal. C、New research set to solve underwater noise pollution. D、Narwhal population affected by underwater noise pollution. -

"No!" screamed Asha as she saw a huge pimple (粉刺) on her nose. She didn't have time to cover the pimple as she was running late to school. She ate her breakfast fast, grabbed her bag and caught her school bus just in time. As soon as she got on the bus, kids started laughing. Nobody was willing to let her sit beside them. Even Anita, her best friend, acted a bit differently, which made her more upset.
Asha was lost in thought. A new thought popped in her mind every second. Once she thought "Great! I have to worry about my pimple as if homework and exams were not enough." The next minute another thought popped in her mind. "I am tired of using this face wash. I still wonder how I agreed to use that thing!" Then suddenly, Mr. Shetty, the bus driver, said, "Asha, do you want to miss the class?" Asha was so lost in her thought that she did not even notice that everybody had got off the bus except her.
She did not want to step into the school campus. She thought, "What will my teachers think? What will my friends think?" After some time, she gathered courage and entered her class, expecting that she would be laughed at. While entering the class, she heard students commenting on her pimple. A child laughed, "Look, someone's cherry is on her nose! Get it for me." She heard some boys murmuring, "She would definitely be chosen as the joker in the dance."

Cheerfulness is a powerful way to deal with a world that will always be tough and unjust in one way or another. It is a sign of strength in the face of difficulties. Different from fear, joy, or anger, cheerfulness isn't something that overcomes you. As such, you can include it into your life once you make the right mental switch. Here are four ways to do so.
◎Acknowledge the difficulties.
Cheerfulness is an honest emotion because you're not hiding from reality. Instead, it's extremely important to be honest with yourself about the problems you're facing. Only by first acknowledging that things are tough will you be able to find ways to cope.
◎ Don't focus on the negative.
Whether in your personal life or in society, it's easy to focus on what's going wrong. But whatever you focus on, it grows. If you decide to focus on what's going wrong, those problems will grow in your mind until they consume you.
◎ Be grateful for what you have.
Usually, they're the things we take for granted until they're no longer there, such as good health, a loving family, or even something as simple as a beautiful sunrise. Being grateful will shift your perspective and make it easier to see the silver linings of your problems.
◎
No cheerfulness without laughter. So you can watch comedies, browse memes, or joke around with friends. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts your mood, makes you feel less pain, and protects you from stress. Laughter is cathartic (精神宣泄的) and infectious. Laugh and brighten the room.
A. Find your sense of humor.
B. Deal with difficulties seriously.
C. Focus on the good things you have.
D. To a large degree, cheerfulness is a choice.
E. You're not covering your eyes and looking away.
F. Acknowledge the problems, but don't give them too much attention.
G. Being cheerful will make you see the world and your own life in a different way.

"What beautiful music!" I shout loudly as my 9-year-old son practices playing the violin. He's used to this praise; I give rewards like that most days. But every once in a while, I skip it, and when I do, I can see the disappointment on his face when he's finished.
Am I a bad mom? Conventional wisdom says that consistency is key to parenting since it enables your child to predict how you'll react, leading to good behavior. And it's true that children need some level of predictability in their lives, particularly when it comes to discipline.
But research suggests that inconsistent gifts and praise can have a greater effect on motivation. While we all like to live in a predictable world, we often respond more strongly to unpredictable rewards.
In one experiment, my colleagues and I told participants they'd be paid if they could drink about one-and-a-half quarts of water in two minutes or less. In one condition, we offered people a $2 fixed reward. In another, there was an uncertain reward of either $2 or $1. The certain reward was a better deal, yet many more people successfully met the challenge when assigned an uncertain reward. Resolving the uncertainty—whether they would win $1 or $2—was significantly more motivating than winning $2 for sure.
Here is one of the reasons why uncertainty is motivating. What scientists call "intermittent (间歇性) reinforcement" —rewarding behavior on some but not all occasions—makes it morearduous to know when rewards will show up. If you very often, but don't always, praise your child for completing their chores, they'll keep up the good behavior in the hope of receiving praise the next time.
So don't assume that if kids are always praised for finishing their homework, they'll be more likely to do it. Do praise young people for a job well done, just not every time. And pick rewards out of a hat when they complete chores—the surprise prize might keep everyone motivated to get things done.

With artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic technology improving at impressive rates, there are some who worry that there's a risk of artistic and creative people being replaced. A new study by the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology, however, is showing exactly why that can't and shouldn't happen. It all started when the South Korean company posed this question: Can robots replace conductors?
Over a year ago, work to develop automaton (自动化) began. At first, it was designed like a machine, and didn't live up to expectations. Then the company sought ways to improve it. In the end, it was given two arms with joints to copy wrists and elbows, allowing it to move a stick similarly to how a human conductor would move it. It was named the EverR 6 robot, and stands at 1.8 meters. It was finally time to figure out how it could follow through on its musical role.
"We got involved in this project to see how far robots can go in more creative fields like the arts, and what the challenges are," Dong-w o ok Lee, a senior researcher at the Korean Institute of Industrial Technology said.
In order to pull this off, Dong-wook Lee cooperated with the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. The 12-minute piece they planned to perform, "Feel" by Il-hoon Son, was created specifically for this event. It was created with the strengths of both EverR 6 and the human conductor, Soo-yeol Choi, in mind.
To pull off this impressive performance, the robot was preprogrammed to conduct through 30 cycles of beat patterns. Meanwhile, it was up to the human conductor to lead the orchestra in creating an improvisational (即兴的) score, adding depth to the otherwise planned piece.
Together, they pulled off a masterful performance that the audience seemed more than happy to have had the opportunity to witness it firsthand!
With the concert having gone so well, this is only the start of EverR 6. Still, no matter the improvements they're able to make to this Android robot, the human conductor isn't concerned about being replaced.
"Let's leave the accuracy to the robots," Soo-yeol Choi said, "but the musical and artistic aspects to a human conductor."
(1)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、The function of the EverR 6 robot. B、The development of the EverR 6 robot. C、The EverR 6 robot's role as a conductor. D、The difficulty in designing the EverR 6 robot.(2)、What can be learned about "Feel"?A、It is a piece familiar to the audience. B、It is a piece showing the human-robot cooperation. C、It is the only piece that EverR 6 will perform. D、It is a piece requiring great ability to conduct.(3)、What role did Soo-yeol Choi play in the performance?A、He corrected the robot's mistakes. B、He programmed the EverR 6 robot. C、He led the improvisational section of the performance. D、He was the main conductor of the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra.(4)、What is Soo-yeol Choi's attitude towards EverR 6?A、Unclear. B、Uncaring. C、Supportive. D、Doubtful.
