A Special Lesson on Getting Along

Last Monday, our class had a special lesson. Our teacher, Miss Chen, put us into groups of four. She said, "Today, we will learn how to get along well with each other."

First, Miss Chen asked us to build a paper tower together. Each group had only five pieces of paper and some tape. At first, we all wanted to be the leader. Xiaowen said, "I have a good idea. Let's use this rectangle as the base." But Dongdong said, "No, my way is better." We talked and talked, but nothing was done.

Then Meimei smiled and said, "Why don't we take turns to share our ideas? You go first, Xiaowen. Then Dongdong. Then I will go last." Everyone agreed. It was very polite to wait and listen.

We started to work. Xiaowen knocked on the desk softly and said, "Listen, everyone. Let me show you my plan." We all listened carefully. Dongdong added some new ideas, and Meimei helped tape the corners. I put the star on the top of the tower. We said "please" and "thank you" to each other many times.

Our tower was tall and beautiful. Miss Chen looked at it and said, "Your group worked like a real team!" We felt very happy. I learned that being kind, taking turns, and saying polite words can help us get along with each other. When we work together, nothing is too hard.

Now, in our classroom, we always remember that lesson. We share crayons, knock before entering, and say kind words when someone is sad. Getting along well makes every day a wonderful day!

Jiajia: Dongdong, I hear someone knocking. Who is it?

Dongdong: It's Meimei.

Meimei: 

Jiajia:  Come in, Meimei.

Meimei: Thank you. What are you doing?

Dongdong: We are reading a new comic book.

Meimei: Oh, I want to read it too.

Jiajia: 

Meimei: That's a good idea! You are so kind.

Dongdong: And we don't fight over the book. 

Meimei: Yes, it's more fun together. Jiajia, you said "thank you" earlier. 

Jiajia: Thank you! Being polite makes friends happy.

A sundial is one of the oldest ways to tell time. It is very clever. A sundial has a flat round plate and a stick on it. The sun shines in the sky, and the stick makes a shadow on the plate. The shadow moves to different places at different times of the day. So, we can tell the time by looking at where the shadow is. It‘s like the sun is drawing a clock for us! But a sundial has a big problem. What happens when it is a cloudy day, or at night? Without the sun, there is no shadow, and the sundial cannot work. People then used other tools like hourglasses and water clocks.

Later, people used clocks and watches to tell time. We still use them today.

A long, long time ago, people used different things to tell time.

But on a cloudy day, it cannot work.

First, they used a sundial. The shadow of the sun told the time.

They also used an hourglass. The sand inside could count time.
