The ice sculptures were so beautiful, and their son Bert loved the ice sculptures very much. They had a lot of fun in China.

Helen loves reading books, and she can write very good stories. She can finish reading a book every two weeks. Her best friend Mary can't write good stories, but she always wins the first prize in singing contests.

Helen wants to win a prize in singing, too. She practices a lot every day, but Mary still wins the prize.

Helen is not happy and she talks with her mom. Her mom tells her, "The sparrow(麻雀) is small, but it flies fast. The seagull(海鸥) is slow, but it flies far. You and Mary are just like the sparrow and the seagull.You are good at writing stories, and Mary is good at singing. You both have your own shining points."

After that, Helen doesn't feel sad anymore. She learns that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. So she decides to organize her time and manage her studies better.

Helen takes out a piece of paper and draws a timetable(时间表). She divides her time into several parts: reading in the morning, practicing singing in the afternoon, and practicing writing in the evening. She also sets a goal for herself: write a short story every day and practice three songs a week. To better manage her study time, she also uses a clock to remind herself to complete each task on time.

[中华优秀传统文化:餐桌礼仪] Ning is from China. She has many stories about China. Jason isNing's friend. He is from America. Ning (邀请) Jason to have lunch at her house. He has never eaten (中国的) food. Ning met Jason at the door (开心地).

Jason met Ning's family and (看见) a round dinner table. Jason's family ate at a round table, too. But this table had a smaller, spinning table on top. It was full of little bowls. Ning (指向) to a chair. "This chair is for guests," she said. "Please sit here."

Ning taught Jason to eat with (筷子). Jason picked up some chicken on his first try! It tasted good!

Ning's family talked about some (有趣的) things. They were happy. After lunch, Jason told his mom, "I feel like I just ate in China. The food tasted great!"

Bob's father has a big farm. On New Year's Day, he asks Bob, "Could you work on the farm when you're free this year?"

"Farming is not my work, Dad. I have much schoolwork(功课) to do." Bob isn't glad about it.

"If you help me work on the farm, I will give you anything you want."

"OK." Bob agrees happily.

So Bob gets up early and works hard on the farm in his free time this year, just like other farmers. His wheat(小麦) grows very well.

Time flies. Today is December 31st, the last day of the year. The father is talking with his son.

"I'm happy to see you work hard on the farm, Bob. Now tell me what you want as the gift(礼物)."

Bob shows his father a big piece of bread. He makes it with the wheat on his farm. "I have already got(已经得到) your gift, Dad. You are trying to give me a lesson—— no pain, no gain. Right?"

Yuan Xin, a one-armed student from Wuhan University of Science and Technology, touches many people with his story.

Yuan lost one arm at the age of 3. When he reached the school age, his mother didn't send him to school. Instead, she taught her son at home first, helping her son learn to write with his left hand.

Yuan was born in 1995. In 2014, he started to use his only hand to program(编写程序). Later, he won more than 30 prizes. In fact, before going to university, he never used a computer.

"I can't always be upset with life. There will always be successful people in life. Why can't it be me?"Yuan said.

Yuan's achievements did not come as a surprise to people around him. "He always comes earlier and leaves later than us," said Xu Xin, Yuan's teacher. "No matter who asks him for help, he's always friendly," said Wang Shiqin, a student at the university.

Also, Yuan is glad to join in some competitions and activities. During a sports meeting, no one in his class wanted to join in the 10,000-meter race. Then Yuan volunteered and ran the race although it was raining. His behavior moved many teachers and students that day.

One Bite(一口) at a Time

One summer day when I was heading for the teaching building, I met Philip, one of my colleagues(同事), who worked in the same office as me. Beside him stood another young man. Philip introduced me to the young man, named Stephen. He told me that Stephen would take one of my classes, Introduction to American History. Stephen asked if my class was going to be hard. I felt he was worried about failing before the opening day of classes. We talked about what the class would cover and I saw Stephen's eyes getting bigger with fear.

Then I remembered a classical dialogue:

Question:"How do you eat an elephant?"

Answer:"One bite at a time."

I told him to deal with his work that way—— to do all his assignments(作业) and to hand them in on time. I added that the most successful students I knew made a timetable in order to plan their study well.

As time went on, I learned more of Stephen's story. He had difficulty in studying when he was in middle school. Family members, including his mother, kept telling him that he was a failure. He told me that before coming to our college, no one had believed he had much potential(潜力).

Stephen didn't become an"A" student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing course after course, he began to build up a bit of self-respect.

Every time I saw him, he would brighten up and say, "One bite at a time." He told his friends that he was being successful when he was supposed to be failing. His secret, he said, was that he was practicing what I taught him before classes ever started:"Take it one bite at a time."

It is a Saturday evening, and Tom and Jim are on Nanjing Road. They have two tickets(票), but they don't know the way to the cinema. They go and ask a man and a woman. The woman has a city map in her hand, but they don't know the way, either.

Penguins are excellent swimmers, and they spend lots of time in the sea looking for food.They have wings(翅膀), but they can't fly. They use their wings to help them swim fast.Penguins also huddle(挤作一团) together to stay warm in cold weather. I really like penguins, and they' re special and lovely.

There is an important festival(节日) in China. On that day, people always eat zongzi and have dragon(龙) boat races. It is also celebrated(庆祝) in memory of Qu Yuan. The dragon boat is very long. There are some pictures of dragons on both sides of the boat. The front of the boat looks like the head of a dragon. Every team has twenty members. Besides them, there is a man on the boat and he beats(敲打) a drum. It's an exciting race, especially when team members are reaching the finishing line. All of them are very happy.

Beijing is well-known for the hutong. A hutong is a small r between the outer(外围的) walls of a siheyuan, or a courtyard.

Walk through one, and you can get a feel of the heart of Old Beijing. In the hutong, you can see older people p cards or Chinese chess. The hutong is an important part of the culture of Beijing.There are a lot of hutongs in Beijing. Most of t are hundreds of years old. The hutong shows the I of ordinary(普通的) Beijing people. People in the hutong used to(过去常常) enjoy a b dinner with their neighbors. And a shout(大喊) is enough for them to call their friends.
