Many Silicon Valley parents are becoming more concerned about preventing their children from using screens. Some parents think that even a little screen time can be extremely addictive, so it is better if their children avoid using or seeing these devices completely. However, it is difficult for working adults in the 21st century to give up using a phone at home. So, it's simpler to employ someone to do this.

Once upon a time, there was a poor man and a rich man. The poor man's son was named Ham, and the rich man's son was named Jim. They had been in the same school together since childhood and became good friends.

Life is as good as you make it. I made the most of my time and I loved my life, fitting work, school, homework, and fun with my family and friends into my busy schedule. I was an outgoing, energetic, fun-loving twenty-something, with an optimistic attitude and strong faith. I valued my relationships and worked hard at achieving my goals. 

I was living with a close friend while working at a few jobs to put myself through university. In my last term, life turned upside down. It was a clear morning on September 25th in 2020. I was working as a traffic controller, wearing my high-visibility jacket. As I was holding up my stop sign, I was hit by a car at about 80 kilometers an hour. I flew across the street, and landed in front of my coworker. 

I was in critical condition. I was admitted to the ICU. After several surgeries, the doctor informed me that, according to the medical reports and my condition, I would never walk again. 

Because of my brain injury, my memory didn't last longer than the present moments that I was experiencing. My life was very difficult. I had lost all of my independence. For a long time, I required help to be fed, bathed, moved, dressed, and even taken to the toilet. I couldn't stand. I could only lie down or sit in my wheelchair. I had also lost my sense of smell and taste. 

I was slow to process information and my vocabulary was very simple. I couldn't follow people's conversations and I lost my creativity. I always felt stupid and confused. Without visual memory, I couldn't distinguish fruits, vegetables, meats, animals, or even people that I should have known.

What industries interest you? Once you have a list of industries that arouse your interest, start seeking out opportunities within those sectors. Ensure that they agree with your preferred work-life balance and skill set as well.  Instead, think about the kind of impact you want to have and how you want to work. 

 In some cases, you may need to return to college or sign up for online courses to gain the right qualifications for your dream career. With microlearning, there are plenty of educational and engaging ways to learn new skills and information. Returning to school could be key to boosting your marketable skills and credentials (资质).  It could also broaden your horizons and introduce you to new career opportunities you hadn't considered before.

Recent research has revealed that people with hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia (痴呆), yet only 15% to 25% of adults benefit from hearing aids. Hearing loss often comes on so gradually that many ignore it.

In July, at the annual meeting of the Alzheimer's Association, Frank Lin from Johns Hopkins University presented results from a random clinical trial of 977 adults between 70 and 84 with untreated hearing loss. One group received good hearing care, including hearing aids, and another group took part in a program about successful aging. Three years later hearing aids didn't make much difference to the healthiest participants. But those at the higher risk of dementia because of age and health conditions saw a 48% reduction in cognitive (认知的) worsening when they got hearing aids.

When hearing loss is untreated, the brain's organization changes. Adults with hearing loss need to make extra efforts just to listen, which may overly consume cognitive reserves, says Anu Sharma of the University of Colorado. Hearing loss is also associated with more falls, higher healthcare costs, and increased loneliness. "Hearing is fundamental to healthy aging." says Nicholas Reed, who worked with Lin on the cognitive-decline study.

These consequences of hearing loss contributed to the government's decision last year to create a category of over-the-counter (非处方的) hearing aids. Traditional aids averaging $4,700 a pair aren't covered by Medicare or private insurance. It's too soon to assess whether the new devices will close the yawning gap between the large need for hearing aids and the smaller demand for them. In one survey, only about half of non-users said they would use hearing aids even if they were free. The key to getting around that dilemma will be "the common desire of wanting to hear well" and the sense that "everyone is doing it", Lin says. If "wireless earbuds also become hearing aids, that changes the whole perspective of what it means to use hearing technology."

"It's absolutely safe to say that animals are beneficial to our mental and physical health," says Nancy, director of the Center for Human-Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University. Nancy says evidence is accumulating that levels of the stress drop in people after just 5 to 20 minutes' interaction with dogs — even if it's not their pet. And it's not just humans that benefit from these brief exchanges. "We see the same thing in the dogs when they interact with humans," Nancy says.

Now, the therapy dogs used in research are screened for things like friendliness, good behavior and responsiveness. They're not necessarily going to be great for every single person. But for people who get it and connect with the animals, they can make a big difference.

Research on the health benefits of human interactions with animals, especially with dogs, has exploded in recent years. Though the field is still young, the quality of the evidence is improving as new research begins to include more randomly controlled trials looking at short interactions.

So how does hanging out with dogs help us focus? Mueller, whose research focuses on the psychology of human-animal relationships, says dogs drive us to experience the world more like they do. Animals, particularly dogs, live in the moment, experiencing their environment with wonder all the time. Watching dogs sniff the grass or explore the world around them cues us to pay more attention, too. There's some evidence that the act of actually touching a dog might be an important part of their calming effect.

But it's not just how we clue to dogs that makes the relationship special. They can connect with another human being. And they do it without the ability to use words. As my dog-loving 9-year-old kid recently told me, dogs just have a way of speaking to our hearts.

I had a good job. No, a great job in a marketing division of a Fortune 500 company. Besides developing much of the sale and marketing literature for the company, I organized luxury travel trips for top salespeople to Hawaii and Spain on the largest tour ships in the world. However, after working for this first-class company for fourteen years, I got to think about what it would be like to design a job around what I enjoyed most and spend more time with my wife and sons. 

My wife was a stay-at-home mom, so I would sacrifice (牺牲) our only income and insurance for nothing more than a pipe dream. Yet, after conducting extensive research, reading books on how to launch a business as a copywriter, the goal slowly developed. 

At thirty-seven, I had an opportunity to chase a dream—to run a home-based business and spend more time with my family. While spending more time with my family, I launched my copywriting business in June 1991, 32 years ago. 

Looking back, leaving the Fortune 500 company is one of the best decisions I've made. And, while working with clients, sharpening my writing skills on multiple subjects, and winning twelve writing awards, I had the honor to add these achievements to the resume of my life. I watched my sons grow up, played hundreds of unscheduled backyard baseball games and learned it's more fun to play football in the rain. 

How would I have benefited if I had never taken a break from my corporate career? Life provides windows of' opportunity, but they close quickly. For me, to remain in that first-class company during this "window" came at a price too high. I wasn't willing to exchange more of my family life for my professional life.

Dear fellow students,

Fireworks are essentially rockets in their simplest form. They produce noise, light and smoke, and sometimes they even explode sending up floating materials, like confetti (五彩纸屑). They can be designed to burn in all different colors and patterns, so people often set off a number of them in an effort  (create) an interesting fireworks display or show. 

Historians believe fireworks  (appear) for the first time in ancient China in the second century B. C. , when they were made from bamboo stalks and gunpowder that would explode when  (throw) into a fire. They were said to drive away evil spirits. By the 15th century, fireworks had become popular in Europe,  (common) used for religious festivals and public entertainment. And when the U. S. settlers left Europe, they brought fireworks with them and made them a  (centre) part of the first Independence Day,  tradition still followed today. 

Fireworks are wildly popular,  they have been linked to air pollution increases, and  (expert) are concerned about their negative effects  wildlife. Although they' re fleeting and infrequent, fireworks shows spray out a toxic concoction (混合物) that rains down quietly into lakes, rivers, and bays throughout the country. Many of the chemicals in fireworks are also persistent in the environment,  means they stubbornly sit there instead of breaking down. 

After my mother suffered from Alzheimer's disease（阿尔茨海默病）, the plants in our house began to die. In years past, I remember the deep, earthy smell that would 1 in our house after my mother had made her weekly watering rounds. Back then, I never connected it with the care that was at the 2 of everything she did. 

But now, leaves were 3 , some dry and edged with brown, and many of the stems（茎） bare. It was a mark of how my mother can no longer attend to all the things that she lovingly cared for. I was so focused on the increasing 4 of her own care that her beloved plants had escaped my 5 .
