Whenever I tell people that I teach English at the Berlin Zoo, I almost always get a questioning look. Behind it, the person is trying to figure out who exactly I teach...the animals?

Since June 2017, right before the ( arrive) of the two new pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, I have been helping the panda keepers at the zoo to feel more comfortable and (confidence) speaking English. And who do they speak English ?

Not the pandas, even though language used for the medical training instructions is actually English. They talk to the flood of international tourists ,.( visit) Chinese zookeepers who often come to check on the pandas, which are on loan from China. They also need to be ready to give(interview) in English with international journalists. This is they need an English trainer.

So, what are they learning?(basic), how to describe a panda's life. It's been an honor to watch the panda programme develop to see the pandas settle into their new home. As a little girl, I (wish) to be a zookeeper when I grew up. Now, I'm living out that dream indirectly by helping the panda keepers do their job in English.

I used to think my life was perfect. My mom had her dream job and a beautiful office, and I had my own room with a computer and a garden to 1 . But one Sunday, everything changed. A hurricane 2 our neighborhood while we were visiting my grandparents in Raleigh. Our kitchen was damaged, and our clean and comfortable home was in ruins.

But something 3 happened. Our neighbors, the Flores family, came to our help. They helped clear broken pieces and 4 us a place to stay. Their 5 was most impressive. We had 6 spoken to them before, but they 7 their home to us and made us feel like family.

We started a new 8 of having weekend dinner together. We invited other families from the neighborhood to join us, and our 9 were filled with laughter and delicious food. It was a beautiful thing to see our 10 come together in a disaster.

I never knew Rosica, their daughter, 11 the hurricane. But she quickly became my friend. She had a gift for 12 , and our evenings together were filled with adventure and laughter.

How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

Both language and music have their own systems of notation. Language uses alphabets(字母表) to represent sounds and create meaning,  By reading and writing in these systems, we can communicate and preserve ideas and compositions through time.

Listening to the language someone speaks can provide valuable clues about their geographical origin. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

Both share emotion.

 While you may be able to perceive it through my facial expressions, you can judge it with certainty through my words. Similarly, music has the ability to convey emotions such as anger, sadness, or happiness through its sound. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.  I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).

There is nothing like a coast redwood. It is the planet's tallest tree, up to heights of more than 320 feet into the sky. With trunks that grow to more than 27 feet wide, they can live for over 2,000 years. Some of them living today were alive during the time of the Roman Empire.

Coast redwoods have survived through thousands of years of natural floods, droughts, tsunamis and fires. They can thrive and recover from damage as long as they can count on rainwater and coastal fog banks that roll in every morning. And it is those critical water sources that are disappearing as temperatures continue to rise. The damp conditions the trees like are rarer than they used to be. Coast redwoods now occupy less than 10 percent of their original range.

Their loss will have some consequences, paricularly in the vast amount of carbon they store. Redwoods can store 2,600 metric tons of carbon per hectare, more than double the absorption rate of the Pacific Northwest's conifer trees (针叶树)，according to a new research published in Forest Ecology and Management.

David Milarch, an arborist from Michigan, says he feels sorrowful about the disappearing redwoods. He spends his days tracking down the healthiest coast redwood specimens (样本) he can find, cloning them in his own lab, and then planting them in carefully chosen places where they can thrive. Milarch's goal is both to strengthen the coast redwood gene pool with clones of the strongest individuals, and to store loads of carbon. It's a complicated mission with a simple philosophy: save the big trees, and they'll save us.

Milarch explains that we need a practical and measurable solution to fighting against climate change. He believes the redwoods are the answer. However, scientist Mark Maslin cautions against viewing tree planting as a magic bullet, since even fast-growing trees take a long time to grow and be mature enough to reach their maximum carbon-trapping time which climate change cannot afford. As a global society, the most important thing we should do now is to reduce our overall carbon emissions(碳排放) if we want to have any impact on the planet's climate crisis(危机).

Taylor Swift showed very early promise as a singer of country songs, performing from the age of nine. She learned the guitar and persuaded her family to move to Tennessee so she could further her career. She holds numerous records for achievements in music, has been named among the top 100 most influential people on more than one occasion and was named as Woman of the Decade and Artist of the Decade in the 2010s. Swift's musical style has evolved from country to pop and her fans number in the millions. 

Taylor Swift has a firm belief that we should all be ourselves. She tempers this by saying that we must be respectful of others, honest and strong-willed. Strength of purpose will carry a person through life and see them achieve great things. Do not, she says, be average. Stand out and be the best person that you can.

Her view of life is simple. We each have one life, and we must make sure we do not waste it. Life is there to be enjoyed and to be fulfilled. Only we can control what happens in our lives, and must not allow others to judge us or create false opinions of us.

To live a life that has meaning, we must be prepared to learn from mistakes and failures and deal with them without getting discouraged or distracted from our path. No one should tell you what you can't do, and you must not let a mistake tell you that either. When someone tries to stop you from doing something, be eager to prove them wrong. Be keen, too, to show that your mistakes won't hold you back.

Taylor Swift puts great store in happiness. Seeking happiness is a wonderful ambition, and everyone should see it as an aim. Success without happiness is a meaningless achievement. Aiming for happiness can go along with other goals too. Swift doesn't rest when she has achieved one goal, but picks up another and pursues that with the same vigor and determination.

Harbin's Frozen World

I wanted to go to a party. Especially it was a beach party. It had been almost the only thing my friends had been talking about for the last couple of weeks. But My mom had said no. The more desperately I pleaded her case, the more forcefully my mother said no. "I don't care who's going," said coldly my mother, "you are not going." I was heartbroken. This was my best friend's party.

Sunday dinner came around and my grandmother joined the family for the meal. Gran noticed my depression but didn't say a word. It was my turn to wash up and Gran said, "Let me help you." "What's up?" asked Gran as I dumped the dishes into the foaming water. Gran wiped a plate with a tea towel. "Mom won't let me go to my best friend's party." I said sadly. "Has mom explained why she doesn't want you to go?" asked Gran. "No." I replied. "Then for a moment, put yourself in her position." said Gran. "If you were mom, what would your objections be?"

I hadn't stopped to think about my mom's side. "Well," I answered, "it's a beach party. Maybe she doesn't trust us or thinks we'll get into trouble."

"Are there going to be any adults there?" asked Gran. "No," I said, "who wants their parents hanging around when you're trying to have fun?" "Might it just be," said Gran, "your mother doesn't want anything unfortunate to happen to you.""Nothing will happen." I objected. "Maybe you're right," said Gran, "but maybe mom's worried in case it could."

Gran looked at me gently, seeming to expect my agreement. For a minute or so, I kept silent, pondering for a while about my eagerness for the party. "Maybe, you are right, however, is there no hope?" I inquired. "Not necessarily." answered Gran, lost in thought.

Welcome to springtime in Hangzhou, a medium-sized city of eight million people in Zhejiang Province, and home  the Lamborghini of China's green tea market: Longjing, known in English as Dragon Well. I'm here to watch the spring rush in action: over a few short weeks in March and April, planters will race against the sunrise  (pick) the early spring harvest, earning them  sizable amount of their annual income.

High-end Dragon Well,  (taste) like spring's first green vegetables accented by chestnuts  (roast) with sugar, can sell for 15 to over a hundred dollars an ounce. Like coffee and wine, this tea has its obsessives, the kind of people  dig into details like the day when a tea was plucked and which side of a hill it came from.

So it goes in China, where tea is  (day) necessity. But when outsiders try to learn  all the fuss is about, they're usually confused by the  (complex) of fine tea, and a marketplace filled with misinformation doesn't do much to help. That's why I've made the journey to Hangzhou myself to learn how and why this little leaf from a plain-looking bush  (drive) a whole economy wild.
