In recent years, multiple studies have illustrated the ways people's dogs can provide comfort, calm their frazzled nerves, be good listeners, and provide other forms of valuable support, proving that sometimes words are simply not necessary.
When people were asked to perform mental arithmetic (算术) or endure a "cold pressor" test in which their hand is submerged in ice water, those who had their dogs present had smaller increases in their blood pressure and heart rate. More recently, a study in a 2023 issue of the journal Emotion had people engage in a stressful task—involving adding numbers that flashed on a computer screen—then interact with their pet dog, color in a coloring book, or wait quietly for 10 minutes. Those who interacted with their dogs experienced a greater boost in mood and a greater reduction in anxiety than those who waited or tried to destress by coloring.
Research has also found that talking to your dog about emotionally fraught issues can be particularly beneficial. People are more willing to confide (吐露) in their dogs about difficult emotions, such as depression, jealousy, anxiety, apathy, and fear, than they are with their romantic partners or friends. The precise reasons for this may be that pets are good, nonjudgmental listeners because they don't interrupt or reply. Your relationship with your dog is a safe space because your dog won't judge you or disagree with you.
A study in a 2022 issue of the International Journal of Public Health found that when people interact with their dogs while teleworking, it replenishes the humans' self-regulatory resources—by engaging in micro-breaks to pet their pup, the people are able to relax and refresh themselves—in ways that interacting with unfurry family members doesn't.
"Dogs are fantastic at reading us—they can sense when we're upset—and they are arguably better at reading us than some people are," says Kogan, a professor in the clinical sciences department at Colorado State University, "because we intuit that our dogs read us so well, we regulate ourselves so as not to upset our dogs, which is helpful for us as well. It's a positive feedback loop."

D、Dogs' owners tend to reduce stress by coloring or waiting.(2)、Why are people more willing to talk to their dogs?A、Dogs can help them fix the problems. B、They get a sense of security from dogs. C、Their partners or friends are not reliable. D、They have a closer relationship with dogs.(3)、What does the underlined word replenishes in paragraph 4 mean?A、Replaces. B、Researches. C、Refills. D、Removes.(4)、What is Kogan's attitude towards having dog companions?A、Favorable. B、Unclear. C、Skeptical. D、Intolerant. -

One day as I drove toward my home, I passed the local bus depot. I pulled up as a group of people crossed the road in front of me. As I watched, I noticed a thin, shabbily dressed older lady struggling with a large suitcase.
Witnessing this lady and remembering similar struggles I had experienced in the past when traveling, I pulled up alongside her and leaned over to call out through the open passenger window, "I'm going right into the town," I said. "I can drop you off. That suitcase looks awfully heavy." "Well, all right," she answered. When we got there, she thanked me, "Well, God bless you, lady. No one has ever done me a kindness like that before. I hope someone will do a good turn for you one day."
Shortly after the encounter with the suitcase lady, I decided to spend a day in the mountains alone. I set off with my dog in my pickup, which was elderly but still serviceable. After driving for nearly two hours, I heard a sudden loud noise and my truck came to a full stop. I found its axle was broken and needed to be towed. In a remote area, with no hope of finding another person, I knew I was in big trouble. Over and over, I blamed my own stupidity for being in a deserted area with no possible chance of help. I hoped that no wandering bear would come to investigate. Or a hungry mountain lion — with babies. My imagination ran riot. I started to panic.
Then faintly, in the distance, came the roar of motorbikes. As they drew nearer, I could see that they were a group of motorcycle riders. "Do you need help, ma'am?" I heard a concerned voice say. The rest is history. My pickup, my dog and I were all transported back to safety. I shall never forget the kindness of the motorcycle riders who stopped. Some people may think it was a happy coincidence, but personally I like to say, it was someone that really did a good turn for me, just as the suitcase lady said.

D、She took her to a nearby hotel.(2)、What happened to her pickup on the way to the mountains?A、It ran out of gas. B、It crashed into a tree. C、It broke down halfway. C、She stayed calm and asked for help. D、She felt very uneasy and frightened.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the story?A、Do as You Would Be Done by B、A Friend in Need Is a Friend Indeed C、What Goes Around, Comes Around D、God Helps Those Who Help Themselves -

The library was typically so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. But on this Wednesday afternoon, there was a roar of laughter that spread through the halls. It was coming from a table in the back. Books were piled so high that one could barely see the source of all the noise. Brian and Josie were hiding behind the mountain of history texts, their faces bright red from laughing.
Mrs Cane, the librarian, followed the laughter and then approached the table. As she cleared her throat and looked over the piles of books, Brian and Josie looked up to meet her gaze. Mrs Cane looked at the books, then at the kids. "And what is it you two are supposed to be working on?"
Brian hesitated a moment, and then answered, "We're working on a paper for our history class."
"I see," Mrs Cane said harshly. "Perhaps one of the private reading rooms would be a better place for you to concentrate and study. Quietly."
The kids collected their books and their backpacks and followed Mrs Cane down a long hallway until they got to a dark row of doors. Mrs Cane pulled out a ring of keys from her pocket and unlocked a door. She turned on the light, which shone brightly overhead. The kids placed their books on the dusty table and reluctantly(不情愿地) climbed into the chairs. Brian and Josie shrugged(耸肩) and opened their books, finally focusing on the project at hand.
Time was ticking away. After what seemed like hours, Brian and Josie decided to take a break and when Josie opened the door of the room, Brian's eyes opened wide. The library was completely dark. Looking at his watch, he let out a gasp. "It's 9:30! The library closed an hour ago!"
Paragraph 1:
Brian looked through his backpack for his cellphone.
Paragraph 2:
They heard a noise that sounded like a telephone ringing.

How to Grow Taller
As we all know, your height is mostly determined by your genetics. Once your growth plates (生长板)are joined together, you will stop growing taller, which usually happens between 14 and 20. Of course, there are many ways you can find on the Internet to help, such as, good nutrition, a healthy lifestyle and exercise. But today, we're just going to focus on nutrition.
Add more protein into your diet.
Protein helps your body build healthy body mass, like muscles. Not only eat protein at every meal, but also include it in your snacks. For instance, you might eat yogurt at breakfast, tuna fish for lunch, chicken at dinner, and string cheese as a snack.
Eat an egg every day if you're not allergic to them.
Kindergarten teachers have observed something typical and interesting. Young children who eat a whole egg daily may grow taller than kids who don't. And this has been proved clinically. Eggs contain protein and vitamins that support healthy growth and they're also quite affordable. Eat an egg for one meal every day to potentially help you get taller. But here is a tip for you.
Take calcium and vitamin supplements.
However, your daily meals can't supply enough for your growth. Supplements may help you grow taller by meeting your nutritional needs. Calcium and vitamins A and D are especially important because they support strong bones. Talk to your doctor to find out if supplements are right for you. Keep in mind that vitamins won't make you grow taller than your genetics allow.
Dairy contains protein, calcium, and vitamins to nourish your body. While milk is a great choice, yogurt and cheese are also great sources of dairy. Include 1 serving of your favorite dairy product into your daily diet.
A. Keep a balanced diet.
B. This can help you be your tallest.
C. Consume a serving of dairy each day.
D. Please ask your doctor if it's safe for you to do so.
E. Minerals and nutrients play a key role in growing higher.
F. Luckily, taking good care of your body may still help you grow taller.
G. You might increase your height by about1.3 to 5.1 cm by stretching out your spine daily.

A survey by the Kennel Club has found almost one in five would rather have a dog than be in a relationship.
The research, which asked 2,612 dog owners for their thoughts on romance, found just under a quarter agreed that having a dog would make them feel less concerned about not being in love.
Perhaps the findings are unsurprising, as celebrities have long used dogs as their plus-ones. Hollywood legend Glenn Close took her Havanese dog Pip to the Oscars last year, describing her pet as "the best date a girl can have". Jennifer Aniston has credited her dogs and female friends with making her happy, stating: "I've had more fun post-40 than I can remember."
Bill Lambert, a spokesman for the Kennel Club, said: "There certainly seems to be a growing number of dog-lovers who would rather share their lives with a four-legged friend instead of a human partner. This could be due to the many benefits that come with dog ownership—from the psychological to the physical. Dogs help their owners relax, whether that's with a daily walk in fresh air, or with a cuddle(依偎) on a sofa. They can also be great listeners, help their owners fight stress, and can play a part in improving the health and fitness of their two-legged owners."
Nevertheless, for those dog owners who are still looking for love, the research suggests their pet might help.
More than a fifth of those questioned said they had been asked out on a date or found love while out with their dog, with beagles, springer spaniels and German Shepherds appearing best for attracting a potential partner. People who owned golden retrievers and corgis were also very likely to say their pet may have helped them out romantically.
Mr Lambert said: "This is quite unsurprising when you consider that dogs are a great ice-breaker, when strangers may otherwise not look twice at each other, and that we tend to have very positive associations about people who love dogs."
Among those responding to the survey, 21 percent said they were more likely to date someone who also had a dog.
(1)、How would a single with a dog react when asked for their opinion of love?A、Behave like a cat on hot bricks. B、Stay calm or even a little carefree. C、Feel quite worried about being single. D、Still be hopeful about love and marriage.(2)、Why does the author mention the celebrities in Paragraph 3?A、To tell us some romantic stories about them. B、To show that the result of the research is true. C、To persuade us to follow these people's example. D、To give us some tips on how to be in a relationship.(3)、According to Bill Lambert, why do many people tend to live with dogs?A、Because of the advice given by their doctors. B、Because the dogs can remind them of somebody. C、Because they can't find their true love in reality. D、Because of the good their dogs bring to their life.(4)、What can you do if you are to find your likely partner?A、Learn some basic knowledge about dogs. B、Set up a homeless dog shelter on your own. C、Bring some dog food with you in the street. D、Walk your beagle in the park after supper. -

"Our temperature's not what people think it is," said Julie Parsonnet, MD, professor of medicine and of health research and policy in Stanford. "or our common sense that our normal temperature is 37℃or 98.6 F, is wrong."
That standard of 37℃was made famous by German doctor Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich in a book in 1868. Modern studies, however, have called that number into question, suggesting that it's too high.
In a latest study published in eLife, Parsonnet and her colleagues explore body temperature trends and conclude that temperature changes since the time of Wunderlich reflect a true historical pattern, rather than measurement errors or biases(偏见). The researchers propose that the decrease in body temperature is the result of changes in our environment over the past 200 years, which have in turn driven physiological changes.
The researchers analyzed temperatures from three officially-recorded datasets covering different historical periods, using the 677,423 temperature measurements from these datasets to develop a linear model(线性模型) containing the temperatures over time. They determined that the body temperature of men born in the early to mid-1990s is on average 1.06 F lower than that of men born in the early 1800s. Similarly, they determined that the body temperature of women born in the early to mid-1990s is on average 0.58 F lower than that of women born in the 1890s. These calculations match a decrease in body temperature of 0.05 F every 10 years.
The decrease in average body temperature in the US could be explained by a reduction in the amount of energy being used. The authors believe this trend may be due to a population-wide decrease in inflammation(炎症): "Inflammation produces all sorts of proteins and cytokines that speed up your metabolism(新陈代谢)and raise your temperature," Parsonnet said. Public health has improved sharply in the past 200 years due to advances in medical treatments, more convenient environment, greater availability of food and improved living standards. The authors also argue that comfortable lives at constant surrounding temperature contribute to a lower metabolic rate. Homes in the 19th century had irregular heating and no cooling; today, central heating and air conditioning are commonplace. A more constant environment removes a need to expend energy to keep a constant body temperature.
