6、 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family moved from Toowoomba, Canada to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain from the 1950s epidemic of polio (小儿麻痹症). She wished to visit specialists in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father bade a tender farewell to his five-year-old "friend" at the dock(码头), an Australian cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father's friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas.
Six weeks later a letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father's face crumbling and his eyes glistening as he read the letter. We tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Sandy has advertised constantly on ABC radio and other local newspapers. Despite some "sightings" in the dock at first, the dog was never found later. It seems Spider decided to search for us elsewhere.
We sailed back two years later and re-established our home in Toowoomba. My father immediately began his own searching for Spider. Several months passed but there was still no news concerning Spider. The dog was gone, possibly shot or dead from starvation or exhaustion.
One cold morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an old lady who said she was putting food out "for a very old dog". In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for a few weeks. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework and we set off immediately. When we arrived at the old lady's house, she invited us into an old bush. Sadly, she then told us that the "dingo dog" hadn't been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle(口哨) for Spider.

"What's your name? " My fifteen-ear-old daughter, Jessica, asked a stranger on the street. Her eyes sparkled with 1 and her face wore a broad smile. I wish she could make it because she has a disability with autistic (自闭症的). I stood nearby, waiting 2 for any potential result.
To be honest, the 3 nature of hers is a result of her disability. Ever since Jessica was real young, she had 4 right up to strangers on the street and 5 a conversation, never expecting to be refused. Children with autism don't relate well to others. As her mum, my thoughts are 6 . On one hand, I tried my best to prevent her from 7 others. On the other hand, I don't want her to be discouraged. Happily, when Jessica talks with someone, it always 8 me that people patiently answer her, although they must sense she's a bit different.
What about this time? Would this man respond kindly or just 9 her and walk away? A few minutes later, Jessica skipped to me. Obviously, it was a successful 10 . Jessica shared with me the 11 they had talked about, which would certainly 12 my daughter's day. The man just treated her like an ordinary girl, nothing special from others.
As we continued on our way, I felt a renewed sense full of 13 for the future. Despite my daughter's problem, an equal 14 the kind people gave her created a moment of 15 interaction.

I came across an image recently of a distance runner with a message that told readers to persevere (坚持) at all costs. It reminded me of a conversation I had. My colleague's teaching assistant was asking for my advice. He wanted to know when to quit something. He described how he'd been playing an online game with people for some time. It hadn't been very fun lately, but there was always that small chance of a reward (upgraded equipment, etc).
I inquired further about his relationship with the players and his gains from the game. I then discussed the sunk cost dilemma, a concept I studied in advanced school due to its personal impact. In high school, I applied to five universities, planning to choose the cheapest one. SUU offered the best scholarship, and after paying a $100 commitment fee, I heard back from another school with an even better scholarship. Despite the new offer, I stayed committed to SUU, believing that switching schools, even if it meant acknowledging the "wasted" $ 100, would have been the wiser financial choice.
A rational (理性的) decision maker is not ruled by past investments, but weighs future outcomes. I didn't focus on future outcomes when weighing colleges. I focused on the money I sunk into SUU. Rather than evaluating future career options, I focused on the fact that I'd already taken elementary education courses.
I'm not the only one that's fallen prey to this. I wear clothes I dislike simply because I spent money on them (and that money won't come back). Unhealthy relationships last because of the invested time (leading to more unhappy years). However, time, effort, or money that you've invested doesn't mean you should continue. Society often stresses perseverance — never quit, never give up, don't waste. However, only you know your right path. Walking away can be the toughest choice. You might realize a path you're on is no longer the right one or never was.
(1)、Why does the author introduce a distance runner's image at first?A、To make a contrast. B、To give a definition. C、To draw a conclusion. D、To illustrate a theory.(2)、What is the common characteristic of a rational decision maker?A、Following suit as most people. B、Taking elementary education. C、Valuing the development in future. D、Overlooking past investments.(3)、What does the underlined idiom "fallen prey to" mean in the last paragraph?A、Get benefits from. B、Be harmed by. C、Be interested in. D、Get rid of.(4)、Which is the best title of the text?A、Perseverance is a virtue B、The chosen path is the toughest C、Cut your losses for your winners D、Walking away means losing all -

Plastic is everywhere, from the Arctic ice to vital organs in the human body. In fact, previous estimates suggest that the average person swallows a credit card-worth of microscopic plastic particles(颗粒) every week. But new research shows that this could actually be an understatement.
Microplastics are plastics smaller than 5 millimeters, found in industrial waste, beauty products, and formed during the degradation of larger plastic pieces. Over time, they break down into even smaller nanoplastics. These tiny particles can pass through our intestines and lungs into our bloodstreams, reaching vital organs like the heart and brain.
While the idea of eating plastic is unsettling in itself, the major concern here is that these plastic particles contain chemicals that can interrupt our body's natural release of hormones, potentially increasing our risk of reproductive disorders and certain cancers. They can also carry toxins(毒素) on their surface like heavy metals.
In the past, researchers have shown bottled water can contain tens of thousands of identifiable plastic fragments in a single container. However, until recently, only the larger microplastics were detectable with available measuring tools, leaving the area of nanoplastics largely a mystery.
Using Raman microscopy (显微镜学), capable of detecting particles down to the size of a flu virus, the team measured an average of 240, 000 particles of plastic per liter of bottled water, 90 percent of which were nanoplastics, a revelation 10 to 100 times larger than previous estimates.
These plastics likely originate from the bottle material, filters used to "purify" the water, and the source water itself. "It is not totally unexpected to find so much of this stuff, " the study's lead author, Columbia graduate student Naixin Qian, said in a statement. His team hopes to expand their research into tap water and other water sources to better inform our exposure to these potentially dangerous particles. "The idea is that the smaller things get, the more of them I reveal, " he added.
(1)、What is the primary focus of the new research?A、The presence of plastic particles. B、The use of plastic in everyday products. C、The detection methods for microplastics. D、The potential risks of nanoplastics to human.(2)、What is the advantage of Raman microscopy?A、Finding the source of plastic particles. B、Helping to cure the deadly flu virus. C、Detecting the smaller plastic particles. D、Improving the quality of bottled water.(3)、Why will the team expand their research into tap water?A、To focus on areas with higher plastic pollution. B、To be aware of the dangerous particles in daily life. C、To further measure the types of particles in tap water. D、To detect the smaller plastic particles in industrial areas.(4)、What is Qian's attitude towards his research?A、Skeptical. B、Objective. C、Conservative. D、Positive. -

After moving to the United States in 1901, 19-year-old Bob Douglas found a job as a doorman in New York. Later, a co-worker took him to visit a basketball court, and he was amazed by the athletic prowess on display. At that moment, Douglas, who had enjoyed playing sports as a child, was determined to create a basketball team and provide greater opportunities for New York City's Black athletes.
He needed to find a place for his team to play. When asking a ballroom owner, William Roach, for permission to use one of the dance floors, Douglas was replied with "you guys will break up my place". After promising to take on all the financial risk, he finally persuaded Roach to change his mind and called the team "Rens".
However, their ballroom had fewer seats and attracted fewer people than others, so Douglas had to pack the house to generate profits and keep his team alive. They traveled the country playing any opponent that would agree to schedule them, during which they repeatedly faced discrimination and unfair treatment and the players were often banned from hotels and restaurants.
No matter the obstacle, the Rens just kept strict practicing. They helped change the game of basketball by focusing on quick passing, which let the players move faster, play a more fluid (流畅) game and keep winning. In 1925, the Rens shocked the world by defeating the Original Celtics, the most dominant team of their day. During the 1932-33 season, the team won 88 straight games, a professional basketball record that remains unbroken.
Unfortunately, the Rens disbanded (解散) in 1949. But in time, they were recognized for the important role they played in advancing Black athletes in basketball, ensuring that although the Rens aren't a household name, their story will never be forgotten.
(1)、What inspired Douglas to establish a basketball team?A、His desire to show his athletic strength. B、A motivation to learn Black culture. C、His intention to earn a good income. D、An experience to a basketball court.(2)、Why did the Rens tour the country playing basketball?A、To solve financial problems. B、To improve basketball skills. C、To fight for accommodation. D、To play with excellent players.(3)、How did the Rens help change the game of basketball?A、Making competition rules. B、Speeding up the game. C、Defeating the professional team. D、Creating an unbroken record.(4)、What can we learn from the story?A、A winner is one with a willing heart. B、A high reputation will work wonders. C、Success makes personal desires satisfied. D、A man owes success to the team support. -

Following My Dream
I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me "The dream is priceless." However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular thing happened, which almost ruined (毁坏)my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in Senior Two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $12.25 per hour. Compared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect (前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn't dare to tell my coach. I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I decided to talk to my coach by myself. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me. I gathered my courage and knocked at his door…

A porter is a gatekeeper who stands at a door letting people in or out. Dad would get me to picture myself stopping 3 things — such as fear — at the door, 4 saying "Come in" to faith, love and self-assurance.
As an actress, before I went on camera, I'd make sure anxiety stayed out and confidence in my ability came in. As a mother, when I was anxious about my children, I would try not to let worry in but would 5 my mind with trust in them.

Most teens can't wait to become adults, free to make their own decisions. But with freedom comes responsibility, and this applies especially to your finances. The earlier you begin developing good financial habits, the more secure your future will be.
Educate Yourself
To take charge of your financial future, read a few basic books on personal finance. And you will find it easier to say "no" to a friend who encourages you to waste money or classmates who plan expensive trips that you can't afford.
Plan Your Spending
First, never spend more money than you can get, and second, watch where your money goes. The best way to do this is by creating a personal spending plan to track the money coming in and going out.
Postpone Satisfaction
However, you'd better prevent yourself from doing so. With more money saved, you can buy something even better. So whether you received money from a part-time job or special occasions like Chinese New Year, it is wise to hang on to your money so that you can enjoy a greater satisfaction later on.
Start an Emergency Fund
To get ready for independence, you'd better save money for emergencies. So why not stick to a wise spending plan and put some money into this fund every month? It will also give you a sense of safety and enable you to sleep better at night.
Managing money is a skill that takes time to develop. If you can form the habits of self-educating, planning and saving, you'll be on your way to a solid financial future.
A. There are two golden rules for you to follow.
B. Waiting to get what you want is called postponed satisfaction.
C. The best way to monitor your spending is to open a bank account.
D. Here are some habits that can help set you up for financial success.
E. This simple action will help you get out of unexpected financial problems.
F. Many teens rush to buy their favorite items as soon as they get some money.
G. Once you have learned enough knowledge, you won't be easily misled by others.

Families with unhealthy diets have worse mental health than those who mostly avoid meals packed with sugar, fat and salt. A new study is the first to show that children's mental health is not immune to what they eat, especially inflammatory (引起炎症的) diets.
The effects of inflammatory diets are putting kids on a path to poor mental health from as young as age 11. The evidence (证据) is now well proved that inflammation in the body is actually damaging bodies gradually and leading to many chronic (慢性的) diseases.
The Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) looked at the diets and self-reported mental health of more than 1,800 Australian parents and their 11-to-12-year-old children. as well as measuring markers of chronic inflammation in their blood.
The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, showed the benefits of healthy eating—namely anti-inflammatory diets high in fruit and vegetables—extended beyond physical health, and that families can eat their way to good mental health.
A child's weight was not an influencing factor. Regardless (不管) of size, the bad effects of inflammatory diets high in processed foods affected children across the board.
Lead researcher at the MCRI, Dr Kate Lycett said while research had shown that specific anti-inflammatory diets could reduce depression symptoms (症状) in adults, people knew little about the effect on children and how a typical family diet—a mix of both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods—affected mental health.
"What surprised me was we saw the same results in terms of the risk in children and parents," Dr Lycett said. "That's really important, because as adults we try to control what we eat. We know when we eat a packet of chips we feel sad, but we often don't think about that when we give our kids those chips."
(1)、Which diet should children avoid?A、The diet high in processed foods. B、The diet low in sugar, fat and salt. C、The diet high in fruit and vegetables. D、The diet low in inflammatory foods.(2)、What can we know about Dr Lycett's study?A、Inflammation in our body contributes to chronic diseases. B、We can eat our way to good health physically and mentally. C、A child's mental health is not immune to his or her weight. D、Anti-inflammatory diets can reduce depression symptoms.(3)、What does Dr Lycett really want to express in the last paragraph?A、The risk of giving adults inflammatory foods. B、The feeling of eating a packet of tasty chips. C、The effect of a typical family diet on children. D、The importance of controlling what kids eat.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Healthy eating leads to no inflammation B、Family diets have a mixed effect on kids C、Unhealthy diets are harming kids' mental health D、Junk food is damaging kids' physical health -

So far this winter, a theater in the Alps has staged more than 60 unique concerts. Winter temperatures in the remote mountain village can drop high below zero. Performers wear down jackets and play ice instruments. In fact, almost everything from drums and guitars to horns and harps at the music festival is carved from ice even the stage the musicians play on. The audience sits on ice chairs and benches and claps their hands to listen, both to praise the performers and to keep themselves warm when the air flows through.
The musical instruments used were almost entirely made by an American ice artist, Tim Linhart. Since he created his first musical instrument out of ice more than a decade ago, he has already carved various ice instruments, including violins, violas, timber drum sets, xylophone, double bass, mandolin and cello. He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.
Linhart makes the different parts of the ice instrument and then uses a liquid mixed with snow to glue them together, with a metal support placed where the strings need to be. A violin can usually be made in two or three weeks, while larger instruments can take more time and efforts, sometimes taking months to make.
An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending on the number of people in the audience. This also changes the temperature of the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sound they produce. Musicians need to tune their instruments frequently during performances.
Although playing an ice instrument is not easy, Linhart believes that ice and snow are good materials for making instruments. The only downside is melting when the temperature is above freezing.
(1)、What is special about the music festival?A、It attracts only the locals. B、It usually lasts two months. C、It has to be held in the cold. D、Its audience have to dress up.(2)、What does the underlined word "vibration" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Temperature. B、Shaking. C、Length. D、Opening.(3)、What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about ice instruments?A、Strengths and weaknesses. B、Production methods. C、Specific materials. D、Different varieties.(4)、What is the purpose of the text?A、To promote an idea. B、To explain a theory. C、To share an event. D、To introduce a finding. -

I often wondered what it would be like to have cancer.
I didn't expect to find out, though, at last not for decades. I have always been healthy and strong; I regularly do hot yoga and swim two kilometers in a bay near my home in Sydney.
But now I know: it felt as if I was carrying a baby. Tumors (肿瘤) that silently grew inside me suddenly became bigger one weekend.
Then, one Saturday in June, I was struck with sharp pain and ended up in the hospital.
My doctor said it might be very serious. I spent two weeks waiting for the operation, not knowing if I'd live to the end of the year.
In the days before the operation, I turned off my phone and computer. I prayed so hard that I grew unnaturally calm.
The operation lasted five hours. The mass was fully removed, but it was unexpectedly complicated. I was in special care for eight days, in the wires, machines, with pipes in my lungs and liver.
Luckily, the operation was very successful and I am slowly growing stronger. I am walking upright again and waking without great pain. I can now drive, and am preparing to return to work. My prognosis (预后) is good, but I will need to live with the fear of return.
Everyone suddenly seems consumed with foolish worries. I have a different idea about the complaints posted by some Internet users who had the flu, were upset by the upcoming exams or burdened by work. I want to scream: BUT YOU ARE ALIVE! Alive! Each day is a gift, especially if you are upright and able to move with ease, without pain.
I'm still struggling with what all of this means. But in this short time, a truth became even clearer to me.
We should not have to move to the woods like Henry David Thoreau to "live meaningfully". It would be impossible and frankly tiring to live each day as if it were your last. My doctor asked me a few days ago how I became so calm before the operation. I told her: I prayed; I locked out negativity and drew my family and friends near; I tried to live meaningfully.
She said, "Actually you should do that for the rest of your life."
(1)、What did the author think of her physical state before being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer?A、She knew tumors silently grew inside her. B、She exercised regularly but felt bad sometimes. C、She thought there was nothing wrong with her health. D、She was considered to be healthy by the doctor.(2)、Which one is not the so-called "foolish worries" according to the author in Paragraph 9?A、Loss of both legs. B、Suffering from the flu. C、Burden of heavy workloads. D、Fear of the monthly exams.(3)、Which of the following can best describe the author?A、Kind and outgoing. B、Cautious and brave. C、Confident and generous. D、Positive and reflective.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To share a pleasant experience. B、To recommend a healthy lifestyle. C、To call on people to live a worthy life. D、To try hard to make a difference to the world. -

The hardest thing about planning a big European vacation is actually narrowing down where to go—there are just so many amazing places. That's why we've put together what we think are the best cities in Europe.
AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
Amsterdam is the kind of city that you can't help but fall in love with. It's the kind of place where you dream about moving and buying an apartment that overlooks (俯瞰) a peaceful river. It's relaxing and you get a sense that the locals have an amazing quality of free life. We love simply walking around the canals and exploring the city's neighborhoods.
BERLIN, GERMANY
Berlin is said to be "poor but charming" and we think that's a pretty good description. Actually, Berlin is becoming more expensive as its popularity grows, but it's still the top spot for Germany's artistic scene. Berlin isn't particularly pretty but it's an energetic city with cool people and cooler graffiti-covered (涂鸦) neighborhoods.
LISBON, PORTUGAL
Lisbon is a hot destination and I doubt it will be quickly moving up in the ranks of Europe's most visited cities. Lisbon is a popular coastal city that's famous for its unique buildings and charming café culture. It's also very friendly on the wallet when compared to other Western European cities—food and lodging are both priced reasonably and attractions are about average.
FLORENCE, ITALY
Florence may be touristy but that's no reason to ignore this birthplace of the Renaissance (文艺复兴). If you do your research, you can find plenty of excellent Italian restaurants and world-class ice cream. And, of course, the city is beautiful and home to top museums so it's a dream for art and history lovers.
