Motorcyclists born to ride supplies to firefighters

Chongqing motorcyclists are being hailed as heroes for volunteering to transport much-needed supplies to the fire and rescue workers fighting the wildfires caused by prolonged heat and drought across multiple districts in the municipality.

As of Wednesday, Chongqing has issued a red alert,  most severe in the four-tier warning system, for high temperatures for 16 consecutive days.

In the scorching heat and drought conditions, multiple wildfires have ravaged many parts of Chongqing. As of Tuesday, several large wildfires have been brought  control with the joint efforts of the fire and rescue workers, social organizations and residents. No casualties have been reported.

Facing the tough situation, the city government called for volunteers with (relate) skills and experience to join the firefighting, and a large number of (motorcyclist) have played an important role and won widespread praise.

" is my honor and duty to guard my hometown," said 27-year-old Li Xin, a member of Yueqi Motorcycle Club in Beibei district.

HK, mainland university to open in Guangzhou

Mountain torrent that killed 7, injured 8 at scenic spot in Sichuan stirs reaction

There was a tragic death of seven people, and an injury of eight others in a flash flood at a scenic spot in Sichuan province. The  (safe) of tourists visiting unregulated scenic spots prone to flash flooding has become a matter of public issue.

At about 3:30 pm  Saturday, a flash flood hit Longcao valley, a popular tourist spot in Longmenshan town, Chengdu. Several tourists were unable (escape) before the flood hit.

In the wake of the tragedy, tourists have been cautioned against visiting mountainous locations susceptible to flash flooding during the summer flood season.

"Mountain climates are very  (complicate). There can often be heavy rain at the top of a mountain and clear weather below,  can sometimes lead to flash floods or mudslides that people lower down the mountain are unaware of." Xie Hong, a researcher from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Science said.

When it rains, slopes become prone to instability and to  (disaster) such as flash floods, mudslides, rockslides, landslides. According to the villagers,  flash flood hit within seconds in this accident.

Xie said that although the warnings are  (clear) posted at such places, some people are quick to forget about such tragedies.

He suggested  (teach) a better understanding of the way weather behaves in the mountains in schools so that awareness of potential danger is ingrained at a young age. He hopes that tragedies like this can  (avoid) in the future.

 Sino-Korean art exhibition kicks off in Shanghai

Born in 1992, an exhibition featuring artworks from 30 Chinese and Korean artists born in the year 1992, opened in Shanghai on Thursday.

Kim Seung-ho, Republic of Korea consul general（总领事）in Shanghai, said at the opening ceremony that the exhibition is meant ( commemorate) the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea.

"As the Chinese idiom ( go): A man should be independent in society at 30. In the past 30 years, a generation of Chinese and Korean people have worked hard and made excellent achievements in ( develop) the bilateral（双边的）relations," said Kim.

Divided into three sections, the exhibition features 30 artworks that include paintings, photographs, installations（装置艺术）,  videos.

Shanghai-based artist Zheng Yiran created the installation Living Room just for  exhibition. One of the objects within this installation  drew the attention of many visitors is a photo album. "As I ( inspire) by the theme of this exhibition, I created this album by getting each of the participating artists to send me a childhood photo of themselves. I then put all these (image) in one album so that it looks like one person," said Zheng. "It seems as if we share a common memory of the past 30 years, and I invite everyone to come to sit in this (relax) living room and have a look at the growing-up process of this person," she added.

The exhibition is located  Bund 18 Art Space and runs through Aug 28.

Tourists cautioned of flood dangers in wake of tragedy.

 Chongqing heat sparks highest health alert

The Chongqing Health Commission and Chongqing Meteorological Observatory upgraded the city's second-level alert (issue) on Wednesday for heatstroke, changing to a first-level alert for heatstroke on Friday. It is the city's first such top-level alert.

According  the chief forecaster of the municipal meteorological observatory, Luo Juan, the city's first-level alert for heatstroke must come after temperatures in at least eight districts and (county) rise above 40 C for five consecutive days.

From July 29 to Aug 12, a dozen districts in Chongqing had temperatures exceeding 40 C for five to 11 consecutive days. The heat wave is expected (continue) the following week.

Luo said summer in Chongqing is noted for its high (intensify) and long duration. Temperatures are much higher and the rain is (significant) reduced.

Holly Lillard went outside just to wash the windows. She didn't go out that day to help save a pet—or a person. But that's what happened when she found a 1 cat named Tucker and closed a 600-mile gap to return him to his owner, Jamie McCall.

Jameson Lobb, a 24-year-old investment banker and his college buddy, an artificial intelligence engineer named Raphael Jafri were squeezing in a lunchtime workout overlooking the East River, when Lobb froze. 

"Somebody's in the water," he said. Before Jafri could  1  , Lobb climbed over the rail at the edge of the bank and  2 into the cold water without taking the time to remove his shoes. What Lobb had seen then was a person floating, 3 . Jafri didn't need to see the victim. He just 4  his shoes and swan-dived.

Approaching the unconscious victim, Lobb saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds,

respectably dressed and 5 fast. The rescuer dove, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both 6 . Jafri was there now. Treading water, the two friends floated the man on his back. As Jafri looped his arms around the man's shoulders and Lobb 7 the hips and knees, the pair undertook the slog back to the bank. Their lungs heaved and their muscles 8 as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the brisk, churning water.

They might have been hauling a corpse. The man's skin was blue, and neither Jafri nor Lobb 9 any breathing. Suddenly the man stirred, breathing again, and 10 back to near unconsciousness.

Both men,11 exhausted from 15-plus minutes in the water, watched as rescue workers loaded the nearly drowned man into an ambulance and 12 . Lobb and Jafri never learned who he was, what became of him or how he'd fallen into the river.

In place of that knowledge, they have a story they get to tell now, another experience that has further cemented their 13 . Lots of people were there that day, yet only the two of them jumped in the water—because, they say, they were the 14 people there and, so, had a moral 15 .

"People always say ‘If your friend jumps off a cliff, are you jumping?' I think I answered that one." Jafri said, laughing.

Chinese actress Zhang Jianing sparked controversy after wearing traditional Korean attire while (promote) tourism in her hometown of Yanbian in northeastern China's Jilin Province.Korean netizens expressed outrage over

  Hungry for 'space gardens'

As humanity sets their sights on deep space exploration, the moon becomes a stepping stone, with countries (hope) to build lunar bases to support such missions. (solve) the "lunch" problem, scientists have been exploring the (possible) of growing plants on the moon.

A new study by Chinese scientists has found that bacteria in soil from Earth could offer  solution. Researchers from China Agricultural University tested five species of bacteria on a material that simulated (模拟) lunar soil. Within a period of 10 to 21 days, three of the bacteria species had doubled their amount of phosphorus content, a key element for plant growth. They then (grow) model plants in the lunar soil simulant containing these three bacteria species.

They observed that the plants had longer stems and roots after six days of growth  (compare) with those grown without the bacteria. The plants also had (heavy) and wider clusters (簇) of leaves after 24 days of growth. Besides, levels of chlorophyll – responsible for harvesting energy from light – in the model plants were about double that of those grown without bacteria.

In their follow-up research, they hope to experiment with real lunar soil samples and grow crops like rice, corn and potatoes. Since the duration of space missions is increasing, carrying all food supplies to space (become) unsustainable. Hence, "space planting" becomes critical.

During the Shenzhou XI mission, astronauts managed to grow lettuce, from sowing harvest. In the later missions, the "space farmers" have (successful) grown wheat, rice and thale cress (拟南芥), according to CCTV News. These "space gardens" not only provide astronauts with food also more oxygen and water.

China said to be one of the most expensive places to raise a child

China is one of the most expensive places in the world to raise a child, (outstrip) the US and Japan in relative terms, a prominent Chinese thinktank said yesterday.

A report released by the Beijing-based YuWa Population Research Institute (find) that the average cost of raising a child in China until the age of18 is 538,000 yuan (£59,275)- more than 6.3 times as high as its GDP per capita, (compare) with 4.11 times in the US or 4.26in Japan. For children in Chinese cities, the average cost rises  667,000 yuan (E73,488). China is second only to South Korea, which has the world's (low) fertility rate.

The report also addressed the opportunity costs, (bear) mainly by mothers, associated with having children. Between 2010 and 2018, the weekly time spent by parents on helping with their primary schoolage children's homework increased from 3.67 hours to 5.88 hours. Mothers tend to suffer  loss in paid working hours and in leisure time as a result of raising children. Fathers only experience a loss in leisure time.

"Due to reasons such as the high cost of childbearing and the difficulty for women (balance) family and work, the Chinese people's average fertility (willing) ... is almost the lowest in the world," the researchers concluded.

Last year China's population (shrink) for a second consecutive year, exacerbating the government's concerns about supporting an ageing cohort of people with a shrinking number of workers. Women are increasingly inclined to delay or reject motherhood because of the negative impact it has on their careers and finances.

Foreign Office 'may have encouraged' Gaza statement from prince

The timing of Prince William's unprecedented intervention (relate) to the war in Gaza has raised questions about the (involve) of the Foreign Office, and  the statement was encouraged or even engineered to increase the pressure on Israel.

King Charles banknotes to enter circulation from 5 June

Banknotes featuring King Charles (issue) for the first time on 5 June, prompting the Bank of England to warn firms they need (make) sure their machines are ready to accept them.

The portrait of the king will appear  existing designs of all four banknotes - the £5, £10, £20 and £50. The king's image will be on the front and also in the see-through security windows. However, the other design and security features will remain the same,  no other changes to the existing look of the notes.

However, the rollout of the new notes may be a little more low-key than some were anticipating, and  may be linked to the king's long-standing interest in the environment: he gave a speech warning about the dangerous effects of plastic and chemical pollution in 1970,  he was 21.

The Bank said the new notes "will only be printed to replace those that are worn and to meet any overall increase in demand for banknotes". It added: "Our approach is in line with (guide) from the royal household to minimise the environmental and (finance) impact of this change." Polymer banknotes were introduced by the Bank in 2016, (end) 320 years of paper money in Britain.

The existing notes featuring the late queen will remain legal tender and will be in circulation alongside the new notes. There are more than 4.6bn sterling bank notes in circulation with the queen's face on them, worth a (combine) f81bn.
