A bus suddenly appeared in the picture. It was very close to us. Cars sped past us without any speed limit. Beside me was a very deep lake: I wondered to myself what if something or someone fell inside it. Suddenly, a bus in front of our van stopped, and because it was raining heavily and the van was going fast, no one could see what was going to happen. Then, bang, we bumped into each other. Our van overturned, but luckily, it didn't fall into the lake. People came to help us get out of the van because we were blocked and the driver was half-dead.

Natalie and Callie, both 13 years old, started raising monarch butterflies for fun in 2020.

In the U.S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human health, but does pose a problem for the country's waterways. The nation's wastewater is loaded with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds (氮化合物) that can feed harmful algal blooms (藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.

Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U.S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in wastewater—some 67 to 100 percent—is a by-product of what people consume.

Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms (微生物) that feed on dead algae use up oxygen in the water, leading to "dead zones", where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.

Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and her team state that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.

‌"Red tourism", a new form of tourism in which people visit locations and memorials of historical significance to the Communist Party of China, has given a much-needed shot in the arm of the domestic(国内的)tourism industry in summer. And red tourism will be more popular during the National Day Golden Week holiday. 

Ticket bookings for red tourism sites in June increased by five times with local and short trips to red tourism sites being the choice of about 88 percent of such tourists. And the search for the term ‌"red tourism" on Mafengwo, a Chinese travel service and social-networking platform, increased by 300 percent during the summer holidays. 

Red tourism is not only about the joy of visiting a new place and taking in the wonderful sights. It is also about gaining knowledge about history and being inspired by the stories of the people who gave their lives to the founding of the People's Republic in 1949 and worked for the wellbeing of the Chinese people. By rediscovering history and passing on the stories of the Chinese revolution and its heroes to the next generations, people can uplift their spirit. 

Red tourism can also be used as an opportunity to develop rural(农村的)areas because most of the revolutionary bases and red tourism sites are in the countryside. It can raise the incomes of local people, Since red tourism creates jobs and helps increase farmers' incomes, it can develop local development. 

Data show that in the first half of 2022, more than 30 percent of all tourists visited red tourism sites in rural areas, which was 10 percent more than the last year. Yet red tourism faces certain developmental problems, mainly because some local government officials have failed to make the best use of red tourism resources for local development.

Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I'd just head east. A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. "Four more lights," she said. There was another bus I could take from there before it was out of service at 8:30pm. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for.

After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (挡风玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver. " I just can't leave you here," she said. " This isn't the nicest place. I'll give you a ride home." "You'll drive me in the bus?" I asked, perplexed(困惑的). "No, I'll take you in my car," she said. " It's a long way," I protested. "Come on," she said. "I have nothing else to do." As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car.

"I'm just passing the favor along," she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn't hear of it. "That wouldn't make it a favor," she said. "Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along."
