4、 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience, watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.
Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school's old team was to play against the new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team had no coach, and they didn't even practice to prepare for the game.
I was assigned (指派) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn't believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and what I should do next.
It didn't take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.
I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence. Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as winners could they willingly invest time and energy.
This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.
……
Six months later, football season started.

8、 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Nowadays, family life has become even more challenging than before. Then, how can we create a happier family life? Let's see some advice.
Enjoy togetherness. When children are babies, parents are advised to spend one-on-one time with their babies. This can be a big mistake since enjoying each other's company (陪伴) is one of the easiest ways for families to create lasting happiness. Parents should regularly spend quality time with their children doing activities together like playing games, sports.
Although the Internet has certainly made communication easier, it is still important to have face-to-face time with your family members. Try to avoid using your cell phone so much. Many families have regular meetings where they discuss issues affecting (影响) the family. This can be a great way to start talking face to face. You can talk about your family's values, or how you can work together as a group to solve problems that affect the family.
Plan fun activities as a family. This can be something that you do once or twice a month, or even once a week. This can be something as easy as going to the beach, a park, or going on a trip to visit relatives. Doing the activities regularly can help you build stronger relationships with your family members, and relieve (释放) stress that many families feel.
A.Talk more as a family.
B.Let family members talk about activities.
C.But, as children get older, the one-on-one time is reduced.
D.Parents need to help their children manage their daily stress.
E.Make quality conversation with your family members, instead.
F.You can also try simpler ones such as camping overnight in your backyard.
G.Regular communication like this can help you build stronger family relationships

Ecofriendly replacement products for single-use plastics are appearing everywhere. But have you heard of edible (可食性的) straws? Now EQUO, a new eco-friendly company in Vietnam has come up with a natural edible solution to plastic or paper straws.
The edible straws are completely plastic free, nontoxic, chemical free, and 100 percent biodegradable according to a company press release.
"It's well known that plastic straws are harmful to the environment. Most of the 500 million used every day in America end up in oceans where they pollute water and harm marine life. Currently over eight billion straws pollute the world's beaches," said Marina Tran-Vu in the press release. "Although there are some plastic and paper straw alternatives on the market, most are environmentally harmful, and we were also unsatisfied with the quality and lasting of paper straws."
All of the materials are locally from regions that support sustainable farming according to the company's website and they struggle to have zero-net influence by" using the power of mother nature". The name of the company was created by combining "ECO" — meaning environmentally friendly — with "STATUS QUO" — meaning the existent state. EQU stands for creating products that have minimal influence on the environment. The company was first shown on Kickstarter on May 18 and hit their funding goal in only 30 days.
Many countries are banning single-use plastics. The EU banned 10 single-use plastic products including straws that will take effect in 2021. Other items that will no longer be made of plastic include cutlery (餐具), and balloon sticks. These 10 items make up a large percentage of ocean waste that harms marine life.
So do your part, use biodegradable cutlery — you can carry your own , edible straws, and reusable water or coffee cups. These small items can contribute to reducing plastic waste.
(1)、What is the third paragraph mainly about?A、The popularity of plastic straws. B、The harm of plastic straws. C、The pollution of beaches. D、The necessity of change.(2)、What does ECO stand for?A、It means the original aim. B、It means the existent state. C、It means how to create products. D、It means being good for the environment.(3)、What can we expect in Europe after 2021?A、Plastic straws will be forbidden. B、Edible straws will be sold cheaply. C、Ocean waste can be rid completely. D、Single-use plastic products will disappear.(4)、Which word best describes the author's attitude to biodegradable cutlery?A、Skeptical. B、Objective. C、Tolerant. D、Approving. -

Heatwaves in the U. S. and floods in western Europe have dominated the news cycle recently, forcing us to re-examine the relationship between climate change and extreme weather. Other catastrophes are going unnoticed.
In the past week, 380,000 people have been evacuated due to floods in China's Henan province,30 villages in Uganda were affected as rivers overflowed and 25 people died in landslides after Mumbai was hit by big storms. Temperatures in Turkey and North Africa approached 50 ℃, while South Africa and Brazil froze. Siberia is battling wildfires again. Finland experienced 31 continued days with maximum temperatures above 25 ℃, the longest heatwave ever recorded in the country. In Iran, the hottest summer in decades has led to water shortages that in turn caused protests in the country's southwest.
All these disasters are part of a series of extreme weather events that paint a picture of a world that's already warmed 1.2 C from pre-industrial times. There's no doubt that it will get warmer.
The global climate is out of balance, German meteorologist Johannes Quaas said in an interview last week. Our climate's reaction to greenhouse gas emissions isn't immediate. The warming and resulting weather events that we see today are a reaction to emissions that entered the atmosphere decades ago.
Scientists estimate that, even if we meet global emissions reduction goals, the planet will continue to warm after that. That will take the planet to somewhere between 1. 5 ℃ to 2 C above pre-industrial times by the end of the century. While their warming predictions have been correct in the past, there's no way to be absolutely sure when temperatures will stop rising, because the experiment we're running on the planet has never been attempted before.
Death, violence and destruction are all signs of humanity's struggle to adapt to a changing climate. "lt seems like there's something in human nature that makes us be behind the events, and not ahead,"said Hans-Otto Portner, an adviser to the German government on climate and the environment. " Maybe that's because the nature of unprecedented events is that we can ‘t imagine what's coming. "
(1)、How is the second paragraph of the article developed?A、By making comparisons. B、By giving examples. C、By presenting research results. D、By analyzing the facts.(2)、What can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4?A、Temperatures won't necessarily continue to rise. B、Extreme weather contributes to disasters to some degree. C、Scientists can effectively control climate changes. D、Climate's response to greenhouse gas emission is quick.(3)、What will scientists agree with according to the text?A、Global emissions reduction target will be soon met. B、Temperatures have risen by 2 ℃ up to now. C、Global warming will undoubtedly continue. D、Temperatures will stop rising for sure.(4)、Where is the text most likely from?A、A guidebook. B、A science fiction. C、A newspaper. D、A feature story. -

Zhu Dejun's first job after graduating from college was as a road design engineer in his hometown, Alshaa League, North Chin's Inner Mongolia autonomous region(内蒙古自治区). In 2011, when Zhu was conducting a road survey along with his colleagues, he saw a plant that he didn't recognize. Later, Zhu learned that the plant was a saxaul (灌木梭梭) tree which is an excellent tree species for sand fixation and afforestation (造林) in desert areas. Known as a desert guardian, a fully grown saxaul tree can hold together a 10-square-meter patch of desert land, according to Zhu.
Zhu quit (辞去) his job at the design institute in 2014 and joined a nonprofit organization, the Society of Entrepreneurs and Ecology Conservation, or SEE, in the same year, concentrating on dealing with desertification (沙漠化) .During the past eight years, Zhu has been leading a team from SEE to plant saxaul trees in sandy areas in Alshaa League and other places of Inner Mongolia.
In 2014, the SEE launched a project titled "one million saxaul trees", aiming to reach that number from 2014 to 2023, turning the desert of more than 133, 330 hectares (公顷) back into a satisfying ecosystem. By the end of 2018, half of the organization's goal had been achieved. In 2016, Ant Finance cooperated with SEE to introduce the Ant Forest platform, not only encouraging people to choose "a low-carbon way" of shopping, traveling and living, but also to help control desertification.
Through the participation of a greater number of online users, who grow virtual trees, the SEE Foundation, set up in 2008, has been providing subsidies (补助金) for local herdsmen and farmers while also offering technological support to plant saxaul trees in desert areas. Now, Zhu is the head of the foundation's project to fight desertification. He also gives lectures about saxaul trees and the fight against desertification at schools, hoping to raise awareness among young people.

When I was only seven years old, I didn't realize the whole arrangements of our journey as a family to Manchester in 1978. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in Manchester. My father unwillingly had to sell our property in Australia. The day before we boarded the ship, Father reluctantly said goodbye to his six-year-old cattle dog, Pluto, who was loved by us all. Father's friend Julia was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Pluto for many weeks.
Seven weeks later, an air letter arrived from Julia, giving my father the news that Pluto had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Julia had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers. Despite many "sightings", the dog was never found. It seems Pluto just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would shoe or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Pluto was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Pluto. One cold winter's Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was "just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows" of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the "dingo dog" hadn't been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Pluto.

Life isn't fair. Some people just seem blessed with the ability to effortlessly charm anyone they meet. Well, it might seem like a magical power, but in fact there are a number of factors at work. The answer is: to a large extent, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People initially judge each other based purely on physical appearance. With just a glimpse of a face, people make snap judgments about each other's likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this? People perceive a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn't it? Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have? Consequently, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat: raise our eyebrows quickly, tilt (仰起) our heads slightly, and once again, to smile.
So we've looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless you want to just stand there grinning foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is if you make people feel good about themselves, they're going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself and all your wonderful achievements.
Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection. Charming people are particularly skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to bond with others. Simple things like asking where someone's from really can open up a discussion and allow you to find areas in common. And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics: the weather.
A. It can be a nice start of a conversation.
B. Instead, you need to show interest in them.
C. There's one incredibly simple tool: your smile.
D. So, can you learn to develop superhuman charm?
E. What good tricks can we employ to become charming?
F. Shared interests are the key to making connections with others.
G. Our brains often survey the environment for friend or enemy signals.

The idea that we can have it all and do it all is not new. This myth has been spread for so long, I believe virtually everyone alive today is infected with it. It is sold in advertising. It is included in university applications that require dozens of extracurricular activities.
What is new is how especially damaging this myth is today, in a time when choice and expectations have increased exponentially. It results in stressed people trying to stuff more activities into their already over-scheduled lives.
The word priority came into the English language in the 1400s. It was singular. It meant the very first or prior thing. It stayed singular for the next five hundred years. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Illogically, we reasoned that by changing the word we could bend reality. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple "first" things. People routinely try to do just that. This gave the impression of many things being the priority but actually meant nothing was.
When we don't purposefully and deliberately choose where to focus our energies and time, other people will choose for us, and before long we'll have lost sight of everything that is meaningful and important.
Once an Australian nurse named Bronnie Ware, who cared for people in the last twelve weeks of their lives, recorded their most often discussed regrets. At the top of the list: "I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me." Instead of reacting to the social pressure pulling you to go in a million directions, you will learn a way to focus on what is absolutely essential by getting rid of everything else completely.

C、The decline in individuals' ability to make decisions. D、The lack of motivation to pursue personal goals.(2)、Why is the idea that you can have it all particularly harmful?A、It provides individuals with more choices. B、It cultivates a culture of over-consumption C、It leads to over-scheduling due to social stress. D、It lowers individuals' expectations towards life.(3)、What are readers encouraged to do in the last paragraph?A、Make the best of their talents. B、Listen to their inner voices. In June a massive "heat dome" baked the famously temperate Pacific Northwest, subjecting parts of Washington State, Oregon and western Canada to extreme temperatures. It is virtually impossible that heat waves like this would have occurred without climate change. Scientists estimate it was a one-in-1, 000-year event. "And that's an ‘at least,'" says Kristie. L. Ebi. "It could be more rare than that. "If warming reaches two degrees Cabove preindustrial levels — the threshold that most national governments have agreed to try to avoid in hopes of reducing climate change impacts, "that event could occur every five to 10 years," Ebi says. "In an average year in the U. S. , heat kills more people than any other type of extreme weather, " says Kristina Dahl, a climate scientist. Hundreds of people died in the recent Pacific Northwest heat wave, according to estimates: there were at least 486 deaths in British Columbia, 116 in Oregon and 78 in Washington. A recent U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found there were more than 3, 500 emergency department visits for heat-related illness this past May and June in a region that includes Oregon and Washington State.
The human body functions best at 98. 6 degrees F (37 degrees C). The body has mechanisms to rid itself of excess heat, most notably sweating. But at a certain point, that fails to work, causing loss of consciousness. People can eventually acclimatize to some level of heat. If you live in a hot climate or work in hot conditions for a period of weeks or months, your body becomes more efficient at sweating and cooling itself down. This process takes time, however.
As the planet warms, heat waves like these this year are becoming frighteningly common and catching climate scientists off guard. "Even a lot of our climate models that project out how frequent extreme heat will be in the future wouldn't have necessarily predicted this level of heat for that part of the country," Kristina Dahl says. "But then to realize that I am seeing it in my lifetime, and living it right now, is really terrifying."
(1)、What does Ebi's saying imply in Paragraph 1?A、Heat dome has affected at least three regions. B、Temperature reaches the threshold immediately. C、Heat waves affect the Pacific Northwest greatly. D、Severe weather could become frighteningly common.(2)、What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?A、Many areas are badly affected by heat waves. B、Heat waves pose a major risk to public health. C、More people died of illnesses in this summer. D、Latest news on heat waves are widely reported.(3)、What does the underlined word "acclimatize" in Paragraph 3 mean?A、Adapt. B、Settle. C、Respond. D、Object.(4)、According to Kristina Dahl, the extreme heat ____.A、ruins his normal daily life. B、gets scientists prepared to it. C、fails to be accurately forecast. D、should be examined frequently. -

If you wanted to make a Disney-style animation of, say, Reggie, a spirited rabbit, planning to save his forest, you'd have a lead animator draw the extremes of the action: Reggie looking intensely focused, and then proudly announcing, "There's a new hero in the forest! "Then you'd bring in an in-betweener - that is, the animator who draws all the comprehensive frames that bridge the major actions.
In-betweeners don't get the glory, but without them cartoons would hop from one emotional peak to another, missing connective grace. Burny Mattinson (1935 2023) started his career at the Walt Disney Company in the mail room, and, even though he had no formal training in animation, he was given a swing at in-betweening just six months later.
His first big assignment was to in-between the wagging of a dog's tail. Disney animation was famous for its silky elegance, owing in no small part to the skill of its in-betweeners, and, thanks to Mattinson, the tail practically glided from side to side.
Mattinson had wanted to be an animator ever since his mother had taken him to see" Pinocchio" at a theatre when he was six. In a bold move, Mattinson showed up at the Disney Studios gate with his portfolio (作品) as soon as he finished high school. The magical part of this story is that, instead of shooing him away, the security guard liked his drawings and called the head of personnel to take a look.
Thus, Mattinson became a messenger at Disney, beginning a career that would eventually make him the employee with the longest service at the company. He had joined the company at a golden moment. Listing the films that he worked on is a little like listing the entire output of the Walt Disney Company over the past six decades: Sleeping Beauty, "The Lion King," and on and on.
Mattinson was, perhaps, one of the last of an almost extinct genotype - the happy company man, the lifer. He never had an employer besides Disney. When asked what Mattinson enjoyed doing outside of his life at Disney, his son said, "He just loved his work."
