As a student in Pakistan, it had always been my dream  (come) to China and immerse myself in its culture and events.In 2022, my dream finally came true. I arrived in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, to study at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

Chengdu, with its exquisite cuisine and rich history, attracted me from the moment I set foot in the city.  (situate) in the heart of Sichuan, Chengdu spreads out over the rich Chengdu Plain and is home to the ancient Dujiangyan irrigation system. It owes its  (survive) to the mighty Minjiang River.

As I walk into the big room at school, I'm wearing my white coat that doctors usually wear. But I also have on some funny 1 and a messy wig that makes me look like a crazy scientist. My name tag says "Professor Quantum Quirks," which makes people laugh.

The science of setting goals.

It's the time of year when we think to ourselves:our New Year's resolutions will totally work out this time. . But what if this year really could be different? Kelly McGonigal, a psychologist, shares four tips. 

Choose a goal that matters, not just an easy win. Our brains love rewards, so we often set simple goals that make it easy to check off boxes. But if that's all are about, no wonder we end up abandoning them so quickly. A meaningful goal requires going deeper. . For example, if you want to quit eating junk food, ask why you want to quit it. Then, if you want to quit it for your health, ask why you want good health.

.When we set goals, it's easy to focus on that magical ending. But we can't control outcomes. We have to inch toward them, one choice at a time. Ask yourself, "What is the smallest thing I can do today that helps me reach my goal?" If you make daily choices that are consistent with your goal over and over again, you will eventually reach it. 

Frame your goals positively. Focusing on what you want to bring into your life –not what you want to avoid – will make you more likely to actually pursue it. "Any sort of avoidance is going to trigger inhibition systems, ," says McGonigal.

Prepare for failure. Moments of failure are inevitable, but most of us abandon the goal entirely when minor failures and setbacks start piling up. Your task is not to avoid failures, but to plan for them. Ask yourself, "How am I likely to fail?" For example, if you‘re likely to choose unhealthy meals when you're hungry, carry a light snack that can tide you over. .

Since 2001, robotic tools have revolutionized (彻底改变) the practice of surgery. They have greatly reduced the stress and physical demands normally placed on surgeons and have made certain procedures possible.

One example is telesurgery. Telesurgery, or remote surgery, is the use of technology that allows a surgeon to perform a procedure on a patient who is not in the same physical location.Normally, telesurgery relies on a wired connection due to concerns of harming the patient should a wireless connection drop during surgery, but China has made several advancements in wireless telesurgery based on 5G technology.

China achieved the first 5G-based remote operation in March 2019 involving a brain surgery procedure between a surgeon in Sanya and a patient in Beijing, a distance totaling nearly 3,000 kilometers, reported CGTN. More recently, a team of surgeons successfully completed remote micron-level (微米级别) eye surgery on rabbits located in a different city, reported China Daily. The rabbits were at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, whereas the surgical team who operated on them via a 5G robot were at the Hainan Eye Hospital in Haikou, Hainan province. "If everything goes well, 5G remote micron ophthalmic (眼科的) surgery will be available to humans within half a year," said Professor Lin Haotian, whose team led this trial.

Looking to the future, people hope that remote surgery could be regularly used to help injured soldiers on the battlefield while keeping surgeons at a safe distance. Some even believe that robotic systems, combined with AI, could one day surpass human surgeons.

Smart medical care has made breakthroughs during the past years at home and abroad. The booming (飞速发展的) online medical service meets the needs of the people and helps improve the medical treatment process.

On Nov 11, an Australian jockey (骑师) got hurt after his horse "broke down" during a horse race in Hong Kong. Though the jockey is safe now, his horse was not so lucky. Since the horse's leg injury would have led to its death, vets euthanized (实施安乐死) it in front of the audience on the spot. Falling off a horse at high speed has a big risk of injury. You can say it's the jockey's choice to take part in the sport. But what about the horses?

This is not the first time that animals have been harmed because of animal entertainment-related sports. For example, about 180,000 bulls (公牛) are killed in bullfights around the world, with many more injured in bullfight events every year, according to Human Society International, an organization promoting the human-animal relationship globally. Hunters shoot more than 800 lions in South Africa, reported World Animal Protection.

To help these animals, animal lovers have started many campaigns , which seem to be taking effect. In June, Churchill Downs, the site of the famous Kentucky Derby in the US, stopped all horse racing, originally set to run until July

Animals play an important part in our lives and are more than tools for sports and entertainment. The human-animal bond can be seen in all kinds of places. Service animals can help people in their jobs and animals are also used to help and care for people with illnesses and who have experienced abuse or mental illness. "We can have our sports, drinks, lively parties, and beautiful hats  but we can leave animals out of it," reported Vox.

Three grade 11 students from Harbour View High School, Canada, wanted to convey their message of fighting climate change to a younger audience. So, they wrote a children's book named Keeping It Cool as part of a project.

Upon receiving their first order of 12 copies, Claire Malco, the illustrator of the book, vividly recalls the moment when the realization struck. "I just sat there with my mouth open and was like, wow, this is actually happening," Malco told CBC News.

Coauthored by Joanna Jackson and Olivia Jordan, the book employs age-appropriate analogies (类比), coupled with vibrant illustrations, to promote actions kids can take against climate change. To explain the concept of the atmosphere, for example, the young authors drew a bubble(气泡) around Earth throughout the story. They also call for actions, such as planting trees and vegetable gardens – explaining how plants absorb CO2 from the "bubble" atmosphere just like a vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器). The book also tells kids how they can avoid polluting the bubble by trying to walk, bike or scoot instead of taking a car or bus.

"The entire second half of the book is just things kids can do without needing their parents' support … We wanted it to be something that every kid could finish," Jordan explained to CBC News.

On Earth Day, the students visited a local elementary school where they read their stories and facilitated discussions about the text with every grade 5 class. They spread awareness that, regardless of age, anybody can help make a positive impact on Earth's climate."Educating students was the intention when writing this book. Having the opportunity to present to 10 different classes helped us gain insight on how to better our presentation and content, as well as see the impact this book will have on students," the students told Our Canada Project.

When I arrived at the large hospital kitchen at 6 a.m., Rose was already checking name tags on the trays(托盘).

Nothing I did pleased her. All morning, her eagle eyes missed nothing and her sharp words hurt.

Totally exhausted, I trudged the six blocks home late that June afternoon. As a third year university student working my way through school, I had never before met anyone like Rose.

Fighting back tears, I wrestled with my dilemma alone in my room. "What shall I do?" The answer caught me completely by surprise. I needed to love Rose.

Working with Rose the next morning, I ignored the hurtful remarks thrown in my direction and did things in Rose's way as much as possible. As I worked, I silently began to surround Rose with a warm blanket of love.

Over the next few days, an amazing thing began to happen. My focus shifted from what she was doing to me and I started seeing Rose as the hurting person she was. Then her icy tension began to melt away.

Throughout the rest of the summer, we had numerous opportunities to work together. Each time, she seemed truly happy to see me. Her bitterness gave way as she started opening up. As I worked with this lonely woman, I listened to her, something no one else had done. I learned that she was burdened by elderly parents who needed her care and her own health problems.

The days slipped by quickly as I finished the last several weeks of my summer job. I soon would be returning as a full-time university student and say goodbye to Rose.

Bamboo was (close) connected with the daily life of people in ancient China. Su Dongpo, a literary giant of the Song Dynasty, said that people could not live bamboo, and people of the time used bamboo (make) paper, hats, shoes and so on. At that time, as today, bamboo shoots were eaten as a popular dish because of (they) crispness and fresh, sweet taste. Bamboo shoots also contain vitamins, sugar, fat, and protein.
