Superhuman artificial intelligence is already among us. Well, sort of. When it comes to playing games like chess and Go, or solving difficult scientific challenges like predicting protein structures, computers are well ahead of us. But we have one superpower they aren't close to mastering: mind reading.

Humans have a mysterious ability to reason the goals, desires and beliefs of others, a vital skill that means we can predict other people's actions and the consequences of our own. Reading minds comes so easily to us, though, that we often don't think to spell out what we want. If AIs are to become truly useful in everyday life, we have to give them this gift that evolution has given us to read other people's minds.

Psychologists refer to the ability to infer other's mental state as theory of mind. In humans, this ability starts to develop at a very young age. How to reproduce the competence in machines is far from clear, though. One of the main challenges is context. For instance, if someone asks whether you are going for a run and you reply "it's raining", they can quickly conclude that the answer is no. But this requires huge amounts of background knowledge about running, weather and human preferences. Moreover, whether humans or AI, the theory of mind is supposed to appear naturally from one's own learning process.

Yet we might still want AI to have a more human-like form of theory of mind. While letting AI form the theory of mind in their learning process is likely to lead to developing more powerful AI, plainly building in shared ways to represent knowledge may be crucial for humans to trust and communicate with AI.

It is important to remember, though, that the pursuit of machines with theory of mind is about more than just building more useful robots. It is also a stepping stone on the path towards a deeper goal for AI and robotics research: building truly self-aware machines. Whether we will ever get there remains to be seen, but we are on the path to learning to think about ourselves.

Robins(知更鸟) are considered as a symbol of the festive season and are known for their lively, curious nature around humans. But even robins get road rage because they can become aggressive when there's noise, a new study shows.

Researchers from the UK found that the sound of traffic made rural robins—not urban robins—"more aggressive". The study was conducted by experts at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. Human activity has a colossal effect on wildlife, including on their social behavior," the team said in their paper.

For their study, the team investigated the behavior of male European robins living in urban parks and rural forests in Istanbul. They measured aggression towards another robin intruder, which wasn't a real robin but instead a model in the shape of an adult bird. The fake robin was equipped with a speaker, through which the team could play audio, and then attached to trees at the parks and forests. The audio consisted of recordings of robin songs, while additional traffic noise was added through another separate speaker nearby.

After recording the birds' behavior during interactions with the fake intruder, they found the urban robins typically displayed more physical aggression than rural robins. However, rural robins became more aggressive with the addition of traffic noise—possibly because they're less used to traffic noise than urban birds, which are already living in noisier habitats. What's more, physical displays of territoriality could increase because the traffic noise interferes with their birdsong. "In normally quiet surroundings, we found that additional traffic noise leads to rural robins becoming more aggressive," said Dr Caglar Akcay at ARU. "We believe this is because the noise is interfering with their communication."

Overall, by comparing urban and rural robin reactions, the study provides a valuable glimpse into how urban-living species adapt to "life in a noisy world". "Our results show that human-produced noise can have a range of effects on robins, depending on the habitat they live in," said Dr Akcay.

When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboat man. We had temporary ambitions of other sorts, but they were only temporary.

My father was a justice of the peace, and I supposed he possessed the power of life and death over all men and could hang anybody that offended him. This was distinction enough for me as a general thing; but the desire to be a steamboat man kept intruding(闯入), nevertheless. One of our boys in town, who went away and was not heard of for a long time, turned up as an apprentice engineer on a steamboat. This thing shook the bottom out of all my Sunday-school teachings. That boy was notoriously worldly, and I was just the opposite. There was nothing generous about this fellow in his greatness. He would always manage to have a rust y nail to scrub while his boat stopped at our town, and he would sit on the inside guard and scrub it, where we could all see him. And wherever his boat was laid up he would come home and show off in the town in his blackest and greasiest clothes, so that nobody could help remembering that he was a steamboat man; and he used all sorts of steamboat technical terms in his talk, as if he were so used to them that he forgot common people could not understand them.

This creature's career could produce but one result, and it was speedily followed. Boy after boy managed to get on the river. Despite many choices, pilot was the grandest position of all. The pilot, even in those days of trivial wages, had a princely salary—from 150-250 dollars a month, and no board payment. But our parents would not let us and our worry was that the next year would find us hunting for jobs with low pay again. So by and by I ran away. I said I never would come home again till I was a pilot and could come in glory.

    I'll never forget the day when Mom made me go to a birthday party. I was in Mrs. Black's third grade class in Wichita Falls, Texas, and I brought home a birthday invitation. "I'm not going," I said. "She's a new girl named Ruth, and Berniece and Pat aren't going, either. She asked the whole class, all 36 of us."

    Exploring nature allows us to catch sight of rare animals and come across special places of beauty. Of course, none of this would be possible   protected nature areas. This is why national parks are so important. A few national parks allow things like hotels and recreation areas  (construct) within them, . most parks do not allow any development at all.

    Sometime in eighth grade, my 8 changed. I turned what I'd always thought of as a negative into a positive. I finally 9 that difference and ran with it. 10 waiting in fear for the teacher to 11 my name, I raised my hand when I knew the answer to a question. I always volunteered to read and even used oral presentations as an opportunity to show my comedic talents, I went from a stuttering kid who seldom spoke a word to a stuttering man who now speaks for a (n) 12 . Self-acceptance continues to be essential in the success I've experienced as a speaker, comedian, writer and soldier. My only 13 is that it didn't happen sooner. 

    It's never easy to be a kid. It's especially 14 when you're different, but it doesn't have to be The time to accept your 15 is now. 

    Imagine that you are an actor performing in a play for the first time. You have learned all your lines and you know where to walk on stage. Waiting behind the closed curtain, you can hear the audience whispering and taking their seats. 

    Then your big moment arrives! The curtain goes up, and the crowd falls silent. All you can see is the spotlight shining down on you.  The inside of your mouth is dry, and your hands are wet. 

    If you have experienced a moment like this, you know all too well what it means to have stage fright. It is one of the most common types of fear and tends to strike people when they find themselves at the centre of attention.  People experience it when playing sports, giving a presentation, or even speaking in class. A person who suffers from stage fright may get sweaty hands, a dry mouth, a tight throat, or shaky knees. Stage fright is actually a form of panic (恐慌), and these feelings are very real. 

      The experience differs from person to person, but the same chemical process takes place in each of us. In reaction to anxiety, our bodies produce a chemical that prepares us to either fight or run away quickly. Scientists refer to this as our bodies' "fight or flight" reaction. As a result, we feel great energy that makes our hands sweat, our hearts race, and our knees shake

      Practicing your performance and following some simple tips can help calm nerves and manage the feelings caused by anxiety. First, dress comfortably and properly. Second, before the performance, take deep breaths and stretch to help relax your body. Third, stay away from drinks that contain caffeine (咖啡因).  Instead, try a banana! Some doctors believe that eating a banana can help calm your heart and the rest of your body. Finally, when you look at a crowd, try to focus on particular people instead of the whole group. These tips have helped many people learn to deal with their fears.
