Research has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete and steel can reduce emissions. But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和). "Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building," he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest harvests between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report's conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. "Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions," he says. "We cannot just say we should stop using wood."
(1)、What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger?A、They got wrong statistics. B、They used an incorrect concept. C、They included too many factors. D、They were applied in limited countries.(2)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A、The process of the new research. B、The background of the new study. C、The challenge of the new research. D、The achievements of the new study.(3)、When will the emissions drop off greatly according to the new study?A、When wood grows slowly. B、When wood is largely used to make paper. C、When wood is largely used in construction in countries like Brazil.D When wood is largely harvested in countries like Brazil.
(4)、What is Ali Amiri's attitude toward the new result?A、Favorable. B、Doubtful. C、Critical. D、Objective. -

Books have tremendous power. Between their pages, readers can be transported to anywhere imaginable and become just about anyone or anything. Unfortunately, many children all over the world don't have access to books. For several years now, Maria Keller, a 14-year-old girl from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been changing that fact.
When she was 8 years old, Maria already loved reading. She also noticed that some of her classmates didn't read as much as she did. When she asked her mother why that could be, her mother said that they might not be able to afford books. Maria had never thought of this. She could not believe that some children might not have bedtime stories read to them. She became determined to change this.
With her mother's help, Maria created Read Indeed. Read Indeed is a non-profit organization aiming to collect and distribute(分发) books to children in need. During the early stages of Read Indeed, Maria set the goal to collect and distribute 1 million books by the time she was 18. It didn't take long to reach that goal.
Today, at age 14, she has collected over 1.8 million books and has shipped them to many states and countries around the world. She says, "I cannot live without books. As I continue my mission, I have learned that the number of kids who have no books are in the hundreds of millions. So I just can't give up, even after reaching my original goal of 1 million books distributed."
She recently set a new goal: to distribute donations to kids in need in every state in the United States, and every country in the world. She keeps track of her progress on a large map at the warehouse(仓库) where they store and sort books. Maria believes that she can get support from even more people and help kids around the world to become better readers!

Sleep experts recommend teenagers get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Many college students experience (regular) and insufficient sleep.
David Creswell, professor of MIT, led a team of researchers to evaluate relationship between sleep and grade point average (GPA).
"Animal studies so far (show) how critical sleep is for learning and memory," said Creswell, "Here we show how this work translates to humans. The (little) nightly sleep a first year college student gets at the beginning of the school term predicts lower GPA at the end of the term. Lack of sleep may be hurting students' (able) to learn in their college classrooms."
The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist Fitbit devices (monitor) and record their sleep patterns. The researchers found that students in the study sleep on average 6. 5 hours a night.
More (surprise), the researchers found that students who receive less than six hours of sleep experienced a pronounced decline in academic performance.
"Once you start dipping below six hours, you are starting to accumulate massive sleep debt can harm a student's health and study habits, (damage) the whole system," said Creswell. "Most surprising to me was that no matter we did to make the effect go away, it continued."

What have humans done to deserve dogs? They greet us when we come home, comfort us when we're sad and generally act as loyal companions.
Now, researchers are investigating whether tumors (肿瘤) in dogs may help treat tumors in humans. In early April, the Jackson Laboratory began collecting samples of canine (犬的) tumors. Cells from these tumors inserted into mice could help test new drugs and improve our understanding about how cancer develops and progresses.
Although cancer results from many factors, genes play a critical role. That means the genetic makeup of a tumor can help determine which drugs work against it. So having a broad and diverse pool of genetic makeups increases the chances of finding the right way to attack each disease. This thinking is particularly relevant for rare cancers and rare mutations (突变). Drawing from a larger pool means more genetic mutations to research.
And using tumors from dogs is a nearly ideal way to widen that pool. They're exposed to many of the same environmental factors that might cause cancer in their owners, notes Dr. Christopher Fulkerson. Some bone and brain cancers are far more common in dogs than they are in people, making samples easier to find.
In many cases, the cells in a dog's cancer look and act the same as they would in a human. They can even carry the same genetic mutations. However, not all canine cancers will be particularly helpful for human-focused research. For some types, the similarities between human and dog diseases will be significant. But when they aren't, warns Dr. Jaime Modiano, the differences could have serious consequences for drug development.
But even when the research doesn't advance knowledge of human cancers, it could still help improve the treatment of dogs diagnosed (确诊) with cancer. That's the least we can do for our faithful friends.
(1)、What are the purposes of collecting canine tumors?A、To help design new drugs. B、To better understand cancer. C、To prove dogs are our faithful friends. D、To show cancer results from many factors.(2)、Why is using tumors from dogs an ideal way?A、Many dogs have bone and brain cancers. B、Dogs and their owners are good companions. C、Dogs and their owners have similar living conditions and cancer types. D、Using tumors from dogs can help determine which drugs work better.(3)、What does the author indicate by mentioning Dr. Jaime Modiano?A、It's useless to study cancers from dogs. B、Studies on cancers from dogs will bring harmful results. C、Cancers from dogs may not be helpful for fighting human cancers. D、Some similarities between human and dog diseases are significant.(4)、What's the author's attitude to the research?A、Unconcerned. B、Doubtful. C、Pessimistic. D、Optimistic. -

Harvard University's Claudia Goldi n has won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics for her research on women in the labor market. She studies the changing role of working women through the centuries, and the causes of the consistent pay gap between men and women. The award comes with a prize of about $1 million. Goldi n is the third woman to receive the prize.
"Claudia Goldin's discoveries have vast society significance," said Randi Hjalmarsson, a member of the Nobel committee. "She has shown us that the nature of this problem or the source of these possible or underlying gender gap s changes throughout history and with the course of development."
Goldin's research showed that women's role in the job market has not moved in a straight line, but has risen and fallen with social regulations and women's own ideas about their prospects in the workplace and the home. Some of these ideas are shaped early in life and are slow to change.
"She can explain why the gender gap suddenly started to close in the 1980s and the surprising role of the birth control pill and changing expectation," Hjalmarsson said. "And she can explain why the earnings gap has stopped closing today and the role of parenthood."
Looking back the history of women in the workplace was easier said than done. The Nobel committee said Goldi n often had to deal with spotty records.
Women currently fill nearly half the jobs in the U. S. but typically earn less. They briefly outnumbered men on pay lists in late 2019 and early 2020, but women dropped out of the workforce in large numbers early in the pandemic (大流行病), and their ranks have only recently recovered.
Some forecasters think women's role in the workplace will continue to grow as they pass men on college campuses and as service fields such as health care expand.
"Understanding women's role in labor is important for society," said Jakob Svensson, chair of the prize committee. "Thanks to Claudia Goldin's groundbreaking research, we now know much more about the underlying factors and which barriers may need to be addressed in the future."
(1)、Why was the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Goldin?A、She realized the importance of women in the labour market. B、She researched the changing role of working women for a long time. C、She found the causes of income inequality between men and women. D、She did pioneering studies on the role of women in the labour market.(2)、What does the underlined word "underlying" in paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Organic. B、Potential. C、Fundamental. D、Preferred.(3)、Why did the gender gap suddenly start to narrow in the 1980s?A、Parenthood played an important role. B、Women's own ideas about work have improved. C、The income gap between men and women has been narrowed. D、Birth control pills and changes in expectation played an amazing role.(4)、What can we infer from paragraph 6?A、Gender pay gap remains. B、Women employed had briefly outperformed men. C、Women's role in the workplace will continue to grow. D、Many women pulled out of the workforce in the pandemic. -

Farm to school events are happening all over the country this month. The events are aimed at bringing fresh food to students' plates. And, after a decline in nutrition education in U. S. schools in recent decades, there's new momentum (势头), to weave food and cooking into the curriculum again.
"I'd love to see it brought back and have the science around healthy eating integrated," says Stacy Dean, deputy under secretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Dean told me she was inspired by a visit to Watkins Elementary, in Washington, D. C. where this idea is germinating. Students grow vegetables in their school garden. They also roll up their sleeves in the school's kitchen to participate in a FRESHFARM FoodPrints class, which integrates cooking and nutrition education.
Evaluations show participation in FRESHFARM programs is associated with increased preference for fruits and vegetables. And, the CDC points to evidence that nutrition education may help students maintain a healthy weight and can also help students recognize the connection between food and emotional wellbeing. Given the key role diet plays in preventing chronic (慢性的) disease, the agency says it would be ideal to offer more nutrition education.
At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause of death, and unhealthy eating habits are entrenched (根深蒂固的) in U. S. culture, it's unrealistic to think that a cooking curriculum could overcome such a sweeping, societal problem. "We know from years of evidence that we need multiple things to come together to support healthy eating," says Angela Odoms-Young, a professor of maternal and child nutrition at Cornell University.
At a time when the U. S. spends billions of dollars on diet-related disease, an investment in nutrition education makes sense, says the USDA's Stacy Dean. "Food is so fundamental to life and good health and it is absolutely worthy of some time in the basic curriculum," she says. The hope is that integrating nutrition and cooking into a school program will give kids the skills and inspiration to eat well, and help put them on a healthy path.
(1)、Where did Stacy Dean's idea come from?A、Her visit to Watkins Elementary. B、Her work at theU. S. Department of Agriculture. C、The decline in nutrition education inU. S. schools. D、The new trend to bring back cooking into school curriculum.(2)、Which is false about the FRESHFARM program?A、Students can raise animals in school. B、It can protect students from chronic disease. C、Students become more interested in fruits and vegetables. D、Students can do some gardening and cooking in the program.(3)、What can we learn according to Angela Odoms-Young?A、Cooking curriculum can solve the diet-related disease problem. B、We need to work together in order to keep a healthy diet. C、People have changed their unhealthy eating habits nowadays. D、Diet-related disease used to be a cause of death inU. S. culture.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Cooking is fundamental in school education. B、Add nutrition education in school curriculum. C、Investment in nutrition education makes sense. D、Cooking and gardening at school inspire better nutrition. -

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella's, with its delicate tulips (郁金香) .
Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon, The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗) . My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest, After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere, I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom's usual words rang in my ear, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella's family returned to their home.

Follow the 20: 20: 20 rule, looking up from your screen every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It in turn reduces eye tiredness.
Adjust your workstation.
Change your screen settings to ensure that the brightness and contrast are balanced correctly, as well as making words larger. Also, be mindful of how your workstation is positioned. Adjust your screen ensuring it is 15-20 degrees below eye level and around 50-70 cm away from the eyes.
Reduce glare (眩光) .
Try reducing this by attaching an anti-glare screen to your monitor or laptop to avoid external light shining onto the screen. Glasses wearers can also have lenses treated with an anti-glare coating.
A. People should try to reduce the time spent on the screen.
B. One can read his favorite paper books instead of e-books.
C. Half admit they're forced to enlarge images to see them clearly.
D. Another thing to focus on is to make sure your room is properly lit.
E. Looking into the distance helps relax the focusing muscles of your eyes.
F. Reflections on your computer screen can cause glare and lead to eye fatigue.
G. They may feel uncomfortable, painful, tired and even start to itch (发痒) or burn.

The recent spread of "fake news" may make it seem like misinformation is a relatively modern invention. But falsehoods (假话) and wild claims have been part of human culture for about as long as it's existed. This is because misinformation originates with, and is spread by, fellow humans.
When you've ever had to communicate an important, but complex, issue to a general audience, you may have a sea of the most reliable data, the most elegant PowerPoint slides and the full backing of every famous expert in the relevant field. And yet, you can still be less persuasive than someone whose entire argument is: "A guy I met down the pub told me something different."
In a perfectly sensible, logical world, someone who is loosely connected with a certain field or industry wouldn't have the same influence as actual data, or the leading experts in the field. But humans aren't perfectly sensible, logical creatures and neither is the world we live in.
The ability to think rationally (理性地) and analytically is a relatively recent addition to our mental abilities (in the evolutionary sense) . And it costs our brains a lot of energy and effort, The more established, fundamental systems in our brain, which shape memory and learning, are heavily reliant on emotion. The more emotionally stimulating something is, the easier it is to remember. That's why we can spend months revising the material for a crucial school exam, but struggle to remember any of it once we've passed. Meanwhile, the embarrassing tine we slipped and landed on our backside in the school canteen. that memory will last until our dying day.
The most determined sceptics (无神论者) will often say, "Facts don't care about your feelings," which is correct. But feelings don't necessarily care about facts either. And ultimately, feelings have more of a say in what we think and do. And that's why your mate down the pub can seem more believable than a pile of published research.

Since the mid-1990s, tourists have paid storm-chasers to take them to places in the American Great Plains where they expect to see tornadoes. Why, a reasonable follow-up question might go, would anyone want to get so close to something so disruptive? These tourists, a study found, characterized their relationship to severe weather as a "passion", describing their feelings about tornadoes using words like "enjoyment" "fascination" and "love". Some people seem spiritually moved by tornadoes—one tourist called the storms "humbling"-but the main motivator seemed to be simple: Twisters are cool.
America has many more, tornadoes than any other country, and its people have long regarded twisters with a mix of fear, awe and thrilled pleasure. Fast-moving-and dramatic, tornadoes have been irresistible parts for popular entertainment. One needn't be an extreme-weather enthusiast, however, to take a brief and far-less dangerous tour: of culture tornadoes have inspired and of the transformation of American society's feelings about these storms from fear to excitement.
European colonists in the future United States were fascinated—and sometimes horrified—by their new land's weather. In the Early Republic, the influence of romantic ideas about the terrible and wonderful power of nature became clearer in American tornado culture. Some people began to write about tornadoes in terms of awe, and to produce art that explored the phenomenon's natural beauty, while also moralizing about its meaning. Since the 1930s, American tornadoes have been less deadly: the country has much better early-warning systems, fewer people live in rural areas and tornado activity has largely shifted from the southeast to the thinly-populated Great Plains.
Storm-chasing—a scientific, thrill-seeking activity that most Americans found out about via the 1996 blockbuster film Twister, is still incomprehensible to many who don't practice it. "I find it difficult to explain to someone who hasn't chased what forces us to seek pleasure from risk," wrote Jennifer Henderson, a scholar and crazy storm-chaser, characterizing her feelings while chasing as "a sense of exposure and revelation tightly coupled".

My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. I was born missing my left hand. Indeed, my limb (手臂) difference could have been a disaster if it hadn't been for what happened next. A nurse placed me in my mother's arms and instructed. "You will take her home. You will love her and treat her as normal."
That is exactly what happened. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and "polite" questions about my disability, I was lucky because I wasn't made fun of for it.
However, that fact that I was different hit me hard my first day of high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious and the need to fit in is intensified. I remember one of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket. I told myself that I'd just hide it that one day, and I was still trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week, a month, and years—25 to be exact.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely, I met someone special and invited him in. The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, touch it. love it—love me. I saw my limb difference as something unique about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
It was a transformational experience, and I learned to love me too. It changed how I lived my entire life and made me happier. I also discovered and joined the Lucky Fin Project, an organization devoted to people with all types of disabilities.
Hiding things, especially from loved ones, is tiring and lonely, and it prevents us from getting help and support. It's time to change that.
