The Surprise Encounter
Emma, a shy first- year student at Green Hills High, always kept to herself during lunch breaks. She preferred to sit alone under the big oak tree, reading a book or sketching in her notebook. One day, as she was about to settle down for lunch, she noticed a new student sitting on the bench next to hers.
The new student, Jenna, was reading a book with a serious look in her eyes. Emma couldn't help but steal a glance at the cover — it was a book she had read and loved deeply. Curiously, she hesitated for a moment before finally gathering the courage to speak.
"Hi, I couldn't help but notice you're reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time. I love that book too! " Emma said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jenna looked up, surprised, and a smile spread across her face. "Really? That's amazing! I just started it and I'm already hooked. What did you think of it? "

Online English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the internet — but in forms very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.
That's because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the Internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don't have to worry about their accent (口音).
Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different "Englishes" including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they're now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not already in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers.
The increasing popularity of the internet allows more languages to develop quickly. "Most people actually speak several languages — it's less common to only speak one," says Mr. Munro. "English has taken its place as the world's common language, but it's not pushing out other languages." Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.
(1)、What does the text mainly talk about?A、There are now many different language styles. B、English is a common language around the world. C、English language is developing with the Internet. D、Smaller businesses are learning a common language.(2)、Which of the following is NOT true about online communication?A、Grammar is not so important. B、People need to spell accurately. C、People do not care about their accent. D、Most English-speakers are not native speakers.(3)、What can we infer from the text?A、We can only communicate online in English. B、Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites. C、It's impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary. D、Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries.(4)、What can we learn from what Mr. Munro said?A、Other languages are enriching English. B、Chinese used to be the world's common language. C、English will become the only language in the world. D、One can't live well without speaking several languages. -

Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You probably say that they go to learn their own language and English, mathematics, geography (地理), history, science and all the other subjects.
We send our children to school to prepare them for the time when they grow up and have to work for themselves. They learn their own language so that they know and understand what others tell them. They learn English in order to be able to benefit from what people in western countries have written and said, and in order to make people from other countries understand what they themselves mean. They learn mathematics in order to be able to measure and count things in their daily life, geography in order to know something about the world around them, and history to know something about the human beings they meet every day. Nearly everything they study at school has some practical use in their life, but is that the only reason why they go to school?
No. There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school above all to learn how to learn so that we can continue to learn when we have left school. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever he has to do it he does it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, either is unable to do something new or does it badly. The purpose of school, therefore, is not just to teach languages, mathematics, geography, etc., but to teach students the way to learn.
(1)、In order to make other people from foreign countries understand you, you should learn ____.A、modern science B、foreign languages C、geography D、history(2)、Nearly all the subjects they learn at school have ____.A、no use in their future life B、little use in their future life C、nothing to do with their daily life D、some practical use in their life(3)、A person will surely be successful if he really knows___________.A、how to learn B、some foreign languages C、something new D、several subjects(4)、On the whole, children go to school ____.A、to learn science and languages B、to learn how to be good students C、to get ready for their future D、to make new friends -

Jason's father immediately realized that a tornado (龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris was falling all over the place. Recently divorced, I had no job and was on my way downtown to go the rounds of the employment offices. I sat down in the streetcar — and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.
I got off the streetcar in a downpour and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. I examined the handle and saw a name carved on it. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.
She said in surprise that it was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present and it had been stolen from her locker at school (she was a teacher) more than a year before.
I managed to find her and gave the umbrella back to her. She took the umbrella, and her eyes were filled with tears. The teacher wanted to give me a reward, but I declined her. We talked for a while, and I left after giving her my address at her request.
My last job ended the day before Christmas, my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had fifteen dollars to my name — which Peggy and I would need for food. I had already purchased my daughter a small tree, and we were going to decorate it that night.
The air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment as I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment. Bells rang and children shouted in the cold dusk of the evening, and windows were lighted and everyone was running and laughing. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance what so ever.
I felt so helpless and so lonely. What was to become of us? We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen, misery overwhelmed me.

Time management is the process of planning and controlling how much time to spend on specific activities. The amount and quality of what you achieve are crucially dependent on how effectively you manage your time. Based on our experience as scientists and supervisors, here is some advice on how to manage your time more effectively as a scientist.
Make a plan
To succeed in a project, it is essential to create a list of all the tasks that are either necessary or important for achieving your goals. Then, prioritize these tasks. . This allows you to identify at a glance the tasks that you need to focus on.
Beware of distractions
Take a long, hard look at your relationship with e-mail and social media. . Consider shutting them off completely as you work on a task that requires your full attention.
Learn to say "no"
Many business leaders put a lot of their success down to simply saying "no". That is, they prioritize their efforts in the few areas that really matter and have the courage to say no to everything else. Those asking for your involvement would be more disappointed if you unwisely agreed to do something, but then failed to deliver. .
Give yourself a break
. Don't be hard on yourself: you will actually perform better if you take breaks and cultivate a life outside science. This might seem counter-intuitive with all those tasks on your list, but solutions to apparently intractable problems can come from a refreshed brain—and a brain that can keep things in perspective.
Your plan and priority list will need to be regularly updated, particularly when things are not going well. Don't panic if your experiments or initiatives fail, instead, redraft your plan and aim to offload all other distracting tasks as you devote more time to a resolution.
A. Update your plan
B. Explore alternative ideas
C. Taking breaks is good for your brain
D. Be realistic with yourself, and honest with others
E. Highlight tasks on your list to indicate their urgency
F. It's important to be honest and to look after your health
G. Although they are vital to everyday communication, they can claim much more attention

Airborne (空气传播的) chemicals found in common fossil fuels are interfering with the pollination process, new research shows — to the extent that it's changing the way a flower smells. And while this might have a minor impact on people who like to stop and smell the flowers, the effect on insects — which can no longer find flowers to land on, especially at night — is concerning, experts say.
A kind of insect called hawk moth, which Jeff Riffell, a biologist from the University of Washington, and his colleagues studied, detects the pleasant smell of flowers from over a kilometer away. One of their favorites is the pale evening primrose. In the fields in eastern Washington State, the research team bagged the flowers to collect samples of their scent. In the laboratory, they isolated the individual chemicals that made up the smell.
The team discovered that certain scent chemicals that moths are attracted to degrade (分解) in the presence of NO3, a strong pollutant that is formed from the emissions of cars, coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources. NO3 builds up in the air at night because it is destroyed by sunlight. In laboratory experiments, two moth species struggled to fly to the evening primrose scent when exposed to NO3 levels typically seen at night in cities. When the researchers went back into the field and treated the scent from both real and artificial flowers with NO3, wild moth visits dropped by about 70%. "The flowers only bloom once per night, " Riffel said. "Without their pollinators, there can be a huge change in the plant community. "
Regardless, there is now a concern for pollinators like moths to become unable to fulfill their ecosystem duties. Riffell noted that about 75% of over 240, 000 documented flowering plants need insect intervention — and that about 70 species of pollinators are endangered or threatened.
"In recent years, there has been a growing interest in ‘sensory pollution', " said Riffell. This pollution, which arises from human activity, can change wildlife behavior, he said. Noise pollution, for example, has been shown to impact birdsong and may be linked to an increase in whale strandings(搁浅). Light pollution, meanwhile, can confuse a range of animals including migratory birds and sea turtles.
(1)、What do the airborne chemicals most affect?A、The way flowers smell. B、People who like smelling flowers. C、Insects that find flowers to land on. D、The process of collecting flower scents.(2)、What does the underlined word "isolated" mean in paragraph 2?A、Combined. B、Separated. C、Identified. D、Preserved.(3)、Why do the moths land less on flowers?A、 Scent chemicals break down. B、Sunshine damages the scents. C、Flowers blossom only one time. D、Vehicles release various pollutants.(4)、What does the passage mainly talk about?A、Hawk moth can not locate flowers. B、Human activity causes sensory pollution. C、Air pollution changes the way flowers smell. D、Light pollution destroys the wildlife's habitats. -

When delivering medications to patients, one of the most effective methods is direct injection into the bloodstream using a needle. But this can be an uncomfortable experience, especially for kids or adults with a fear of needles. While patients do have the option to take pills instead, some drugs are not absorbed effectively this way.
Now, researchers from China and Switzerland have designed a needle-free alternative: a tiny, drug-filled cup that sticks to the inside of the cheek. The patch (贴片) is easy to use, can be removed at any time, and prevents saliva (唾液) from breaking down the drug, which can be taken into through the lining of the inner cheek.
To test the design, the team 3D-printed their 1. 1×0. 6 centimeter material. They loaded each with some drug and stuck them inside the cheeks of three beagles, dogs with a similar inner cheek lining to humans. For comparison, they also delivered the drug to beagles via a pill and via injection. After three hours, the team found that drug plasma concentrations (血药浓度) in the dogs with the patch were more than 150 times higher than those in the dogs that took a pill.
Besides, 40 healthy human volunteers self-applied water-filled patches to see how well they would stay on while talking, moving and using their mouthwash. After 30 minutes, only five of the 40 patches had fallen off, which the study authors write was because of improper placement or handling. Most volunteers said they had a preference for a patch over injection for daily, weekly and monthly applications.
Though the patches need further testing to determine how repeated use affects patients, the researchers conclude that their technique is simple and easily self-applicable by patients. Next, the team wants to bring their suction-cup design to market. They will have to conduct more tests before starting human clinical trials.
(1)、What is the main problem with the traditional needle injection?A、It is not effective for all drugs. B、It may cause discomfort to patients. C、It is too expensive for many patients. D、It requires special training for medical staff.(2)、How does the new needle-free alternative work?A、It dissolves the drug in the saliva. B、It uses a 3D-printed suction-cup to inject the drug. C、It sticks to the inner cheek for the drug to be absorbed. D、It prevents the drug being broken down by stomach acid.(3)、What can we know from the experiment?A、Most patches had little effect. B、The majority of volunteers preferred a patch. C、 D、Dogs taking pills showed no drug absorption.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Magical Drug Made from B、Effective Treatment for Pill Taking C、Alternative Patch for Needle Injection D、Medical Research Designed for Patients
