During China's dynastic period, emperors planned the city of Beijing  arranged the residential areas according to social classes. The term "hutong",  (original) meaning "water well" in Mongolian, appeared first during the Yuan Dynasty.

From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blin d passengers this is part of the experience they miss. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Rom a and AedoProject—to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers a way to feel nature's beauty through their car windows.

The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through, LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they're seeing.

"As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new chance to visualize and experience traveling," Federico Russo.-one director of GTBRoma, said. "When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life." He believes the technology can be employed not just in cars. "It could be introduced into schools and in stitutions for blind people as a tool that could be used in multiple ways."

The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It's known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives different passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It's unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advanced is indeed a kind and influential action.

It's 1:30 am in Kenya's populated north, and 50 people are lying on their backs on the shore of a dried-up river, staring up at the night sky. These stargazers have travelled 250 miles to Samburu to witness the Perseid meteor shower(英仙座流星雨). They are not disappointed: Every few minutes, arrows of light shoot across the sky like silent fireworks.

The Star Safari is organised by a Kenyan astronomer, Susan Murabana, who has brought a 50 kg,170 cm-long telescope to allow the group to view Mars and deep-sky objects. But here in Samburu, where light pollution is minimal, the Perseid meteors—visible with the naked eye (裸眼)—steal the show.

Every two months, Murabana and her husband load their telescope on to the roof of their 4×4 and set off to rural communities, where they give up to 300 children a chance to view the planets and learn about constellations (星座) and the basics of astrophysics. They primarily targets schools in remote areas because of her mission to give girls an opportunity that she wishes had been available to her.

"When I started this work, I didn't see people who looked like me. I was a lone ranger and I wanted to change that." says Murabana.

"There is a common misconception in Kenya that astronomy in general is hard, boring, and only for boys," she adds. "I'd like to teach young girls that astronomy is neither of these things and that they, too, can become astronomers," says Murabana.

Murabana's passion for astronomy began in her early 20s when her uncle invited her to join a similar outreach session organized by the Cosmos Education. "That was a gamechanger. If an outreach group had come to me when I was a young teenager, my attitude towards a career in astronomy would have been positive. I ended up studying sociology and economics, but maybe I would have desired to be an astronomer," she says.

Inspired by the Cosmos Education, Murabana completed an online master's degree in astronomy with the James Cook University in 201l and set up her own outreach programme. She looked to Dr Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, as a role model. "I hope that one day, through this work, I will spark a chain reaction that leads to the first African woman in space."

Columbia Engineering's Summer High School Academic Program for Engineers (SHAPE) is a selective pre-college program for high school students and recent graduates. SHAPE is tailored for students with a gift for STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Each 3-week session offers college-level, project-based courses in engineering taught by celebrated professors at the university. 

SHAPE gives students a more realistic picture of what it means to be an engineer and its professional development components help students develop the skills they need to get there.

Courses

SHAPE features creative problem-solving courses and exposes students to innovative engineering techniques and knowledge presented by professors. Please note that SHAPE does not provide college credit. 

Students gain access to the famous MakerSpace and state-of-the-art research laboratories after completing the safety training and will only do so under close guidance. 

SHAPE also provides students with workshops to explore career fields, professional development, and guidance on sharpening one's college application from admissions officers. Students in the program will be visiting companies and organizations that show the classroom content in practice. 

Application

Students are selected based on the following criteria: 

⒈Strong academic record 

⒉Personal statement to demonstrate excitement and interest in STEM through engagement in challenging courses, activities, projects, etc. 

⒊Enthusiastic letter of recommendation submitted by a math or science teacher 

⒋Creative responses to two required questions and one of the three optional questions 

We encourage all students to apply by the priority deadline of June 15, 2023, so there is no application fee. After the priority deadline, a $50 application fee is required. 

SHAPE is dedicated to supporting students and their families in need of financial assistance. We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships, which cover the full cost of SHAPE. To be considered for a need-based scholarship, families will need to provide a recent pay receipt and complete a Family Income and Expense Worksheet.

Sports bring us together

 Sports are more than competitions. 

 I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. Even kids in the neighborhood would laugh at me. "Look at that girl," they said. "Her feet don't leave the ground when she runs!" Their words embarrassed me. At school, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class would choose me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games. 

 Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women's 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change. 

 My deskmate, Mary, was a natural athlete. She said to me, "I couldn't run that race in your place, because I have signed up for three items already." I nearly broke down. 1500 meters! Running against the best runners in front of the whole school! It would be the worst nightmare I'd ever have! 

 "You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet," Mary patted me on the shoulder, "That is cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together." Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

 Mary invited me to join in their training. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. When the fear of being laughed at flooded over me, I saw others running right beside or stand by the tracks cheering for us. They gave me strengths.

I went to get a coffee this morning. A lovely lady came up to me and said, "You're so pretty and I love your dress." It made me feel 1 .

Meditate (冥想)

Try progressive muscle relaxation. The key to effective meditation is to find a quiet spot away from noise. Start by wearing loose clothes and taking a few slow breaths. When you feel relaxed, focus on your right foot. Think about how it feels. Then, slowly tense the muscles in your foot and hold for 10 seconds. Then you relax your foot and feel the tension releasing as your foot feels loose. 

Breathe deeply

Deep breathing is one of the most effective relaxation techniques.  Sit straight in a chair in a quiet room, and think about how your feet feel on the floor, the posture of your back, and the clothes against your skin. Then turn your attention to your breathing.

Listen to soothing (舒缓的) music

. Try closing your eyes and lying down while listening to something that relaxes you. Put in your favorite CD, make a playlist of fun songs, or listen to the music that makes you happy. Sing along to the songs for added relaxation, If you prefer music, try piano or violin instrumental music.

Spend a few minutes every day writing about your day. You can keep a journal about everything and anything. Write pages if you feel like it, Make the activity about clearing your stress and allowing yourself to relax. You can write things like, "You are awesome" or "I love myself".

From cottages surrounded by impressive gardens to days spent exploring sandy beaches and deep woods filled with wildlife, in My Family and Other Animals, English writer Gerald Durrell provided a vivid account of his family's time on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s.

Come for the arresting descriptions of Corfu landscapes and stay for Durrell's laugh-out-loud tales of his unusual family. This book, Durrell wrote humorously in the introduction, "was intended to be a nostalgic(怀旧的)account of natural history, but in the first few pages, I made the mistake of introducing my family."

Durrell, later known for his zoo keeping and the preservation of wildlife, was just a child during his family's five-year stay in Corfu. He is 10-year-old Gerry in the book—curious, passionate about animals and a detailed storyteller of his strange family: his imaginative elder brother Larry with his literary ambitions, lovestruck sister Margo, sporty brother Leslie and his ever-calm, loving mother.

Durrell's attention to detail is what makes the book so winning, with every sight, sound and smell of the island brought to life. One minute you'll be laughing as Larry's clever literary friends walk down to the daffodil-yellow cottage, the next you'll be catching your breath as Durrell describes swimming at night in the Ionian Sea: "Lying on my back in the silky water, staring at the sky, only moving my hands and feet slightly, I was looking at the Milky Way stretching like a silk scarf across the sky and wondering how many stars it contained."

My Family and Other Animals is quite difficult to classify, being one part travel, one part autobiography, one part natural history, and one part comedy, with a thread of descriptive language running throughout that sometimes raises it nearly to poetry.

As a real delight to read, it's the perfect literary escapism for any adult or older teenager who is currently walking down a tough road in life.

Carl Allamby started his car repair business at 19, working alone in a garage (汽车修理厂). Over the years it had grown into two shops, but Allamby wanted something more. At first, he thought that meant growing his business even further. So at 34, Allamby decided to go for his bachelor's degree (学士学位) in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology (生物学) to get his degree.

Biology class reawakened Allamby's childhood dream. He remembered the feeling of wanting to be a doctor back when he was younger.

Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby and his five sisters and brothers were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door to door. "That didn't pay so well," Allamby says.

Growing up in an African American neighborhood, he faced many difficulties. His school didn't offer advanced science classes. Even if it had, doing well in school could get him into trouble. "Sometimes you wouldn't carry your books home because other kids would laugh at you," Allamby says. So he gave up thoughts of becoming a doctor and chose to fix cars.

With his family's support, Allamby decided to take science classes he'd need to become a health care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be nearly 50 years old seemed crazy. He would instead become a nurse.

But Allamby's chemistry teacher stopped him after class one day. "Carl," he said, "you're like the oldest student here. What's your end game?"

Allamby told him how he'd like to become a doctor but it would be better to have a smaller goal.

"Why not a doctor?" the teacher asked. "You have a great intuition (直觉) for the work. You will go a long way."

He was right. Allamby did well in all his courses. So in 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at age 47, Carl Allamby became a doctor, and took a job in emergency (急诊) medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.

Opening up to someone can be scary. Talking about what you're dealing with is often hard, but at Teen Line we do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for you. Our only goal is to help you in whatever way we can.

What to expect when you call or text Teen Line?

When you call or text Teen Line, another teen will be there to listen, understand, and answer your questions. Many of our callers are talking to someone about what they're going through fur the first time. Our teen listeners are aware of that and try to make you as comfortable as possible.

When you call or text Teen Line, we won't judge you or tell you what to do. We will listen to you and work with you to find a way to improve your situation.

Who is going to answer your call or text?

Our volunteers, who are high school students from Los Angeles, California, will answer your call. Our volunteers —who we call "Listeners"—receive over 100 hours of training from mental health professionals so that they can respond and understand the needs of the teens reaching out. 

What topics can you discuss with us?

Listeners are ready to talk about anything you are going through. The most common topics teens reach out about are relationships, anxiety, depression and loneliness.
