Understanding why the giant panda has such noticeable color has been a long-term problem to solve. To find out the answer, Caro and his colleagues looked at photos of pandas and 195 other carnivore (食肉动物) species, including 39 subspecies of bears. Then, they recorded the coloring on each area of those animals' bodies, and compared them with areas of the panda's body. "Compared with the previous studies, the breakthrough in this study was treating each part of the body as an independent area," Caro said.

The research team tried to figure out the purpose of the dark-colored furry areas. After going through many comparisons, the researchers determined that the white parts of the giant panda help it hide in the snow. In contrast, its black arms and legs help it hide in the shadows, they said. The panda's white-and-black coloring didn't appear to be related to temperature regulation. Nor did they find evidence that the dark circles around a panda's eyes helped to make them look cuter.

"This really was a great effort by our team, finding and scoring thousands of images and scoring more than 10 areas per picture from over 20 possible colors," study co-author Ted Stankowich, an assistant professor of biology at California State University, Long Beach, said in the statement. "Sometimes it takes hundreds of hours of hard work to answer the simplest question: Why is the panda black and white?"

Since its launch, Deepseek has been used in education, healthcare, and environmental protection. In schools, it helps teachers design courses based on students' learning habits. At about 7:00 PM that evening, I got a knock on the door. A man asked if I was missing a cat. It turns out the man found Max after he'd been hit by a truck. He saw my cat lying in the road on the way to work, and stopped to see if he could do anything. He was an electrician (电工) with a full day of house visits, so he drove around with my cat in his car all day as he went through his work day. He kept Max warm, gave him water, and even split (撕) his ham sandwich with him.

I asked how he could possibly know it was my cat, for my cat is a master at getting out of his collar, so he didn't have his tags when the man found him.

Turns out, after his shift (轮班), he went door to door down the entire road where he found Max, asking if anyone was missing a cat. He said he loved cats, and would want someone to do the same for him. He went back to his car, got my cat, and asked if it would be okay with him saying a few kind words for us. I don't usually do this kind of practice, but I told him it was fine. He took a moment to wish my cat a quick recovery and a long life, then got back in his truck and drove away.

The whole interaction lasted maybe 5 minutes, and I never even got his name. My cat made a full recovery, and is sleeping next to me as I write this, 8 years later. It's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, and it came at a time when I was feeling pretty down about humans.

I wish I knew who he was and I could thank him properly. I'll never forget it.

What We Offer

Our summer program offers a unique opportunity to support patients, families, and hospital staff. As a volunteer, you may be responsible for a variety of tasks, including greeting visitors, assisting with patient transport, delivering flowers and mail, and helping out in the office in various departments. This is a chance to develop valuable skills like communication and teamwork while gaining exposure to a professional medical environment.

Requirements

To be part of this rewarding experience, students must be 16 years of age or older by the program start date of June 16th. The program runs for at least 5 weeks and concludes on August 1st. You will need to volunteer for 4-6 hours a day, up to 20 hours a week.

How To Apply

Applications will be accepted online from February 1st to April 1st. Please note that incomplete applications will not be reviewed, so be sure to fill out all required fields. Successful applicants will be contacted for an interview. All selected volunteers must attend an online meeting on Wednesday, May 7th, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This meeting is completely necessary as it covers important hospital policies, safety and what you will do as a volunteer.

How Learning Habits Influence Learning Results

It's useful and necessary (discuss) learning habits. There is a famous saying "Good habits lead to good endings", which shows the (important) of habits.

"An apple a day (keep) a doctor away" also shows how a healthy everyday habit helps build up our body. Thus, good learning habits can help us gain great learning results, including high scores and abundant (丰富的) knowledge. At first, learning habits form our ways of thinking and attitudes to the content of our learning. (obvious), a good habit can help us to speed up to reach our destinations. As we can see, developing a good habit is so important I would like to introduce one kind of good learning habits — keep learning diary every day. We can start the habit by (write) learning summaries and remember to record something (impress) and meaningful. Keep in mind that we can gain this good learning habit, can benefit us a lot.

What's more, I find out that I still have some bad learning habits as well. I can only concentrate on reading for a short time and I will conquer this problem by spending more effort concentration practice in future.

I believe that through my efforts, I can gain good learning results by having good habits.

After I read the story, Subaey's11 teaches us that when we face difficulties in life, we should not be12. Instead, we can bravely turn them into good chances. Andria Zafirakou,a north London secondary school teacher, said she wanted to bring about a classroom revolution (变革). "We are going to make a change, "she said."I've started a project to promote the teaching of the arts in our schools."

The project results from the difficulties many schools have in getting artists of any sort - whether an up-and-coming local musician or a major movie star - into schools to work with and inspire children.

Zafirakou began the project at Alperton Community School, her place of work for the past twelve years. "I've seen those magic moments when children are talking to someone they are inspired by - their eyes are shining and their faces light up," she said. "We need artists . more than ever in our schools."

Artist Michael Craig-Martin said: "Andria's brilliant project to bring artists from all fields into direct contact with children is particularly welcome at a time when the arts are being downgraded in schools." It was a mistake to see the arts as unnecessary, he added.

The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog but a little wider than a real dog. It has six legs instead of four because the researchers say the extra legs enhance its safety, making its movements smoother.

41-year-old Li Fei and 42-year-old Zhu Sibin are among the people with eye problems who are helping the Jiao Tong University team. They are testing the dog using Chinese-language instructions and providing their feedback (反馈) for the researchers to further develop the dog.

Li is completely blind while Zhu has little eyesight. Li normally uses a walking stick to walk. He said, "If this robot guide dog comes onto the market and I could use it, at least it could solve some of my problems in traveling alone."

Robot guide dogs are also under development in Australia and Britain. But China needs a lot of traditional guide dogs. There are just over 400 guide dogs in China for nearly 20 million blind people.

Many workplaces, restaurants and public areas do not welcome a usual guide dog like a Labrador. The supply of real dogs is limited (限制) by feeding and training needs. The production of robot guide dogs could be increased to an industrial level, especially in a center of making industry like China. The researchers think there could be a large market for robot dogs as there might be tens of millions of people in the world who need guide dogs.

Chinese Shuyuan (wise), historically, first resonated (共振) with the West during the Ming Dynasty, when Italian missionary Matteo Ricci met Zhang Huang, then head of Bailudong Academy. Ricci studied the Confucian (classic) under Zhang's guidance, while Zhang integrated Western geographical knowledge into his own work.

This kind of dialogue lives on. In 2025, nearly 200 foreign scholars gathered at the Kaoting Academy in East China's Fujian Province for the Conference on Zhu Xi's Philosophy and Dialogue of Global Civilization, to explore how late Chinese philosopher Zhu Xi's thoughts could offer insights for resolving civilizational conflicts. Former UNESCO General Conference president Simona-Mirela Miculescu noted that Zhu's belief the inseparability of learning and virtue agrees with UNESCO's mission (build) peace through understanding, learning and mutual (相互的) respect.

As you can see in Rowling's example, ignoring external doubts can actually help us stay focused on our own goals.

This happens when someone acts out of stubbornness (固执) or a desire to shift blame, or acts selfishly, focusing solely on their own desires while ignoring how interconnected people's needs are. In the case of recent social media algorithm scandals (算法丑闻), tech giants repeatedly ignored internal researchers' warnings about mental health harms to teenagers, claiming "not their department" Finally, it has caused uncontrollable rising anxiety and self-harm rates among young users.

Therefore, it's crucial to reflect on why we adopt the "I don't care" attitude. Are we motivated by confidence in our decisions, or are we simply avoiding challenges? There are times when it's crucial to care deeply about others, the truth, and personal growth. At other times, it's equally important to remain indifferent to negativity, distractions, or unnecessary pressures. By carefully choosing when to adopt the "I don't care" attitude, we can lead more fulfilling lives.

NASA has collected samples of Martian soil that may contain evidence of very early life. That raises a bigger question: if microorganisms (微生物) once lived on Mars, could they also help us build there? The focus is biomineralization — microorganisms create minerals as part of their metabolism (新陈代谢). Erik Richards, lead author of the research, said microorganisms on Earth that burgeon in tough settings such as acidic lakes, volcanic soils, and deep caves may be especially useful as we explore what could work under Martian conditions.

The work centers on a partnership between two bacteria: Sporosarcina pasteurii (巴氏芽孢八叠球菌), which is known for creating calcium carbonate, and Chroococcidiopsis (拟甲色球藻), a strong cyanobacterium that can survive extreme environments, including simulated (模拟的) Martian conditions. Together, they transform loose soil into a solid, concrete - like material.

The long-term vision is to combine this bacterial co-culture with Martian soil and use it as feedstock (原料) for 3D printing on Mars. If it works in volume, it could change how structures are made on this red planet. The potential value is not limited to construction. Because Chroococcidiopsis can produce oxygen, it could also help enable self-sustaining agriculture and Mars's terraforming (地球化).

Even with promising ideas, their work is still at an early stage. Repeated delays in Mars sample return limit how quickly Mars-specific construction methods can be tested and confirmed. Also, robotics today is unable to reproduce Martian gravity on Earth, yet gravity affects 3D printing and autonomous construction.
