There is no better example of this than Morgan Stanley which has been using GPT-4 since last year. The bank trained GPT-4 on thousands of papers published by its analysts to create a chatbot for its own wealth advisers. About 200 staff at the bank have been using it daily. One analytics chief said the effort would also further enrich the relationship between Morgan Stanley advisors and their clients by enabling them to assist more people more quickly. How much more quickly? What used to be done in half an hour can now be done in seconds.

Powerful AI systems like GPT-4 aren't going to replace large numbers of professional workers. But they will put them under greater pressure to be more productive and faster at what they do. That is what partly happened to professional translators and interpreters. As artificial intelligence tools like Google Translate and DeepL grew in popularity among business customers, many translators feared they would be replaced. Instead, they were expected to increase their output.

AI will also raise the bar on the human's performance. With the extra help, people have no excuses to leave anything out. Much of this is typical of the march of technology. Smart phones allowed us to be connected to work at all times. Slack allowed us to communicate with more people inside a company. But such tools also kept us further chained to work, squeezing (压榨) out minutes in the day that workers might have used in the past for deep-thinking or just taking a breather.

GPT-4 clearly has the potential to squeeze more value out of human workers, but it may well come at the cost of our mental energy. However brilliant these models become, watch out for how they might take you a tiny step closer to burnout.

Many animals depend upon sound to find food or communicate with one another. These species understandably suffer when loud motorways cut through their habitats. Scientists have long documented the ecological damage caused by noise pollution. It has always been assumed, however, that noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ali Akbar Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist in Tehran, has revealed that plants fell victim to it too.

Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi grew two species in his lab that are commonly found in urban environments. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels of traffic noise recorded from a busy motorway in Tehran for 16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.

Analysis of their leaves revealed that the chemicals which are indicators of stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the species exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that certain chemicals normally associated with healthy growth in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise. Even the weight of the freshly-cut leaves differed — leaves from plants exposed to noise consistently weighed less than those from plants grown in silence.

Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi's findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the vibrations (震动) generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to cause strong stress responses that are not much different to those that would be found in plants exposed to extreme conditions.

The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way. The natural world is by no means silent. Whether some plant species have evolved to adapt to the noisy environment, which might one day be collected and transplanted in urban areas, is a mystery worth exploring.

When I set down a cup of soup in front of one of "The Party", she glanced down at it, and then frowned. "Hannah, I asked for a half cup of soup," she said, sounding angrily, "You are always so slow. I don't know how you always mess up our orders."

I politely mumbled an apology. It was only a cup of soup, and an honest mistake, but I felt like such a disaster.

The residents at the high-end senior living community, where I served as a waitress in the cafeteria, expected nothing less than a five-star dining experience and my small mistake was not to be tolerated.

When I first started working there, I was already shy and couldn't stand the idea that someone didn't like me. Early on, when residents would scold or criticize me with or without reasons, I felt like crawling under a rock.

The most difficult guests by far were a group of six women who the servers nicknamed "The Party." At first, they seemed friendly. But the truth is that they were rude and demanding. I would leave the dining room exhausted almost every night after serving them.

Somehow those rough nights started to change me to become more outgoing and self-assured. The residents gradually depend on me and my "convinced" smile. I used to have trouble speaking in front of a group and would be shy when I did. Now, I have no problem walking up to a table of fourteen people and making conversation as if I had known them my whole life.

I give credit to "The Party" for putting me in a situation where I had no choice but to smile and carry on. Today, when I see "The Party", I still flinch a little inside, but then I pull back my shoulders, lift my chin and march up to them ask, "What's it going to be today, ladies?"

Icehouse and ice ticket

As early as Pre-Qin Dynasty, people used natural ice to keep food fresh and make cold drinks. The Zhou royal court had a specialized department called "ice administration". They collected natural ice blocks each December to store in the icehouse. During the Qing Dynasty, "ice tickets" were used and they were available only to officials and the rich.

The most commonly used cooling tool is called "Jian", which is a big container filled with ice. It was made of clay in early Chinese history, and was later made of copper (铜). The "Jian" can be seen as an ancient refrigerator, which can be used to make cold drinks. 

Hiding food in the well

During the Qin and Han dynasties, for common people, the most common way to cool off is by using their wells. Some families put a pot in the well as a cold closet, or put food in a basket and lowered the basket into the well with a rope. 

Herbal drinks

During the Qing Dynasty, taking Chinese herbal medicine was popular in Beijing. In hot summer, some people preferred to drink ice water, some boiled perilla leaves, and liquorice as summer soup to keep off the heat. Ancient people also loved to make lotus seed soup in summer for the benefit of strengthening the body.

Magen double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary that came with videos and other cool stuff. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand (手倒立) if anyone got a perfect score.

After a break, Magen hurried into the classroom, sitting in her seat nervously—Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. "Congratulations, Magen! You did it!" Then, as if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack's feet flipped into the air. The whole class erupted!

Ms. McCormack presented Magen with her prize. A big smile spread across Magen's face as she read the label on the box: To Magen Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.

"Everything OK?" Mom asked as Magen burst through the front door after school.

"Everything's perfect!" Magen shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize.

Mom hugged her. "Well done, Magen"

Magen scooped up (抱起) her cat. "Can you spell nicely, Casper? And quickly and honestly, and…" It suddenly occurred to her that she had misspelled the word. Rooted to the spot, Magen reflected on how she could tell the whole class she shouldn't have earned the prize at all. She dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. "If I put the missing ‘t' back in, no one would ever know," she thought. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her.

Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth's vital resource. By using advanced microwave radar technology it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It's rally the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet's surface.

The major mission is to explore how oceans absorb atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide in a natural process that adjusts climate change. Oceans are estimated to have absorbed more than 90%, of the extra heat trapped in the Earth's atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gases. Swot will scan, the seas and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevations (高度) around smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much of the oceans' decrease of heat and carbon is believed to occur. "Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key question: What is the turning point at which oceans start releasing, rather than absorbing, huge amounts of heat back into the atmosphere and speed up global warming, rather than limiting it," said NadyaShiffer, Swot's program scientist.

By comparison, earlier studies of water bodies relied on data of rivers or oceans taken at specific, points, or from satellites that can only track measurements along a one-dimensional line, requiring scientists to fill in data gaps through extrapolation (外推法). Thanks to the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly than was previously possible.

"Rather than giving us a line of elevations, it's giving us a map of elevations, and that's just a total game changer," said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swot freshwater science leader.

People who give, live longer, studies have shown. Now, a new study by University of Michigan researchers shows that why people volunteer — not whether they volunteer — is what really counts．

For the study, Konrath and colleagues analyzed data collected in 2008 and 2012 aiming at the same random samples of 3,376 people, Overall, they found that just 2.3 percent of those who once worked as volunteers had died, compared to 4.3 percent of non-volunteers. They further found that how much people volunteered mattered as well — only 1.8 percent of regular volunteers died, compared with 2.5 percent of occasional volunteers．

But what really made a difference were people's motives for volunteering. The researchers asked people to rate how important they found various reasons for volunteering, and they found that the more important people rated reasons such as feeling pity for people in need, the more likely they were to be alive. Those who rated motives related to personal benefit as more important were more likely to have died, and just as likely to die as those who didn't volunteer at all. These reasons included volunteering because they enjoyed the social contact, to escape their own problems, or to explore their own strengths．

Konrath says the current findings suggest it may be a poor idea to encourage people to volunteer because it's good for them. "Volunteering is increasingly being encouraged in schools and organizations. Some groups say that it's okay to want benefits for yourself, and encourage people to think of volunteering as an exchange for personal interests. Some groups emphasize the health benefits received through volunteering." Konrath added, "Of course, it's reasonable for volunteers to expect benefits for themselves. But the potential health benefits of volunteering are significantly reduced if self-benefit becomes a person's main motive."

Our first welcome to the UK wasn't from the staff of Heathrow Airport or the coach driver who entered into our lives to take us to our new city and new home for the next three weeks. It was, in fact, the noisy and energetic seagulls full of songs that flew down to us. When we left from the plane's exit passage, we still could hear their loud and clear songs through the glasses. It was amazing that they lifted our spirits and cheered us up after our stupidly long and awful journey.

These seagulls welcomed us Chinese people into their home with open wings and if they could speak instead of merely squawk. I'm sure we would have struck up some bright and harmonious relationship. They liked to hover overhead around with childlike greetings they sang or just simply walk fearlessly close to our feet. Some of us saved bread our host family prepared in the lunchboxes for these friends. And lovely, we would like to share what we have for the rest of eternity.

But Julie, the mother of my host family, who then I stayed with, does not think so. Strangely as well, she could not give any reasons. The closed and squawk-proof double-glazing (window used to keep noise out) explains. Perhaps she prefers to sleep with her windows open but she always fails to do that, because those birds seemed to like staying up till next morning, wholly screaming for her on and on. And they decide to keep doing so every single night. Furthermore, every time she has to wash the marble floor of the gardens, Julie would look up around and swear to the droppings shortly followed by a smile on her face towards me and said. "They are friendly to you."

But stop thinking that she hates the creatures and never plans to have a change, because there is another side to her evident feelings towards the birds. We will do some shopping at weekends and every time there Julie doesn't forget to put a big bag of wild birdseed into her carriage which costs quite more than milks or juices for one week. I can see what it goes for since she refills the wild bird feeder before a big hurry to drive to work every morning and when working she knows what is happening back at home — seagulls are enjoying the seed and leaving for next morning.

I'm leaving soon and not likely. I guess, though I hope not, to get back to see my friends here in England in the future. I said I would miss all friends living here including the seagulls. And when Julie was refilling the feeder again, she said "They're nice but they are not my friends."

Beyond the Horizon

Oshima was sitting at the sea side but the beautiful site did not make her feel good. Her face was dull and gloomy. She was staring at the setting sun without an expression on her face.

But she was not an unhappy child like this always. Six months before, Oshima was a happy child who loved playing at the beach with her brother and sister. Her brother Mittsu used to make sandcastle and Oshima and her sister Osheen collected the sea shells. Her father always shouted, "Come home, it's late", but they would not listen. The seaside was like their second home. At house also, they were a happy family who always laughed and played and had no problems to bother for.

One day all of a sudden something terrible happened. A violent tsunami came and took the entire country in its grip. It was a huge natural disaster. Most of the houses were washed away. The cities and towns were flooded with water. Oshima's town was near the sea and so the tsunami flooded her town as well. Her house was washed and they lost all their belongings.

Her grandmother Midori cried and cried and was totally shocked. She has not seen such destruction in her whole life. They were homeless. Oshima wept and wept and complained that why a violent tsunami hit her city. She was very angry.

The government shifted them to a refugee (难民) camp where many families shared the living space. Helicopters dropped food packets and they had to stand in long queues even for drinking water. Their life had turned upside down. Oshima could see the sadness visible in her parents' eyes. Now she did not like the sea at all and always felt that the sea had broken her trust and was very disappointed with the waves. For her the sea was very cruel who had taken her beautiful house away.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is  unique species found only in the mountainous forests of central and southwestern China. These monkeys get their common names from their golden-orange fur and snub noses.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is a large primate (灵长类动物), with males (weigh) up to 25 kilos and females around 15 kilos. They have a thick coat of fur that helps them adapt  the cold, mountainous environment. Their diet  (consist) mainly of leaves, flowers and fruits. The monkey is also known for its playful nature, often  (see) swinging from branches and playing with each other.

Unfortunately, the golden snub-nosed monkey is facing numerous threats to its (survive). Habitat loss due to deforestation and agriculture has  (significant) reduced the monkeys' living space. Additionally, hunting for their fur and body parts poses a constant threat to these  (endanger) creatures.

In recent years, conversation efforts have been made to protect the golden snub-nosed monkey and its habitat. Many protected areas have been established in their range, including nature reserves and national parks,  provide safe shelters for the monkeys.

The golden snub-nosed monkey is not only a symbol of China's rich biodiversity, but an essential part of the ecosystem. Their conservation is, without doubt, of vital  (important).

When I suggested my 13-year-old try tennis, she quickly turned me down. "I'm not 1 , so stop trying to get me to do sports," Julianna said. I suggested it because some of my recent happiest memories were of playing ping-pong with her. Tennis seemed like a natural progression from ping-pong and a great way to2 some of her growing teen worries on a larger playing field. But my suggestion was always met with 3 .

The voice within can be your inside guidance system toward development and optimism. But sometimes, that inner dialogue also presents a critical voice that points out shortcomings, limits and concerns. .

●Identify negative thoughts.  So you must first learn how to identify these thoughts to break the bad cycle of negative thought patterns. It is important for you to write down any negative thought that may be coming to your mind. You may replace negative thoughts with healthy ones as you begin to change your way of thinking.

● If you want to live a happy and fulfilling life, it's vital to surround yourself with people who want to see you do good and support your highest self. Spend a lot of time together with friends who express healthy thoughts and a positive mindset, and then your own thought pattern can be positively influenced.

●Shift your mindset toward growth. A growth mindset is a belief that your talents will develop over time. A person with a growth mindset tends to be less likely to suffer mental health problems than someone with a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset tend to become stuck in their ways, with repetitive thoughts circling around their heads.  It can guide them toward happiness and success.

●Choose to respond rather than react. Often, when people feel touched, they react without thinking.  However, by choosing to respond mindfully rather than react, you are controlling your thoughts in a healthy way. So next time you notice a powerful thought coming up, take a moment to reflect before reacting.

As humans, we might believe that we are the smartest and perhaps the only creatures in the world capable of having feelings and subjective experience, but is this really the case? A new study finds that bumblebees (大黄蜂) like to play. They like to roll around small wooden balls with no apparent motivation — it likely makes them feel good.

Previous evidence suggests that bees have positive and negative emotion-like states usually when they are given food rewards to test their abilities. However, in an experiment of the new study, some researchers had trained bumblebees to roll balls into a target in exchange for a sweet treat. They noticed that sometimes bumblebees would roll the balls outside of the experiment area for no reward.

This observation gave rise to new questions: What are they doing? Why? Is this random or intentional?

To answer these questions, the researchers set up more experiments. In the latest experiment, they watched 45 bumblebees in an enclosed area where they could walk through a clear path to reach a feeding area, or they could go off the path into areas with wooden balls. They found the bumblebees went out of their way to sit on the balls or push them. Each rolled the balls between one and 117 times during the experiment.

The researchers say that because they did it repeatedly with no food payoff, it suggests that the ball rolling was rewarding.

"The behavior was voluntary," says study first-author Samadi Galpayage. "Bees have a reputation for being hard workers, but the prospect of bees engaging in something like play is really novel and exciting because it shows that bees may experience pleasure and don't only carry out duties that are strictly essential for immediate survival."

Galpayage adds, "Personally, I find this behavior fascinating because it tells us that bumblebees, like many other animals, are more than little robotic beings, but have a richer behavior and life than we would have previously thought."

At the end of 2019,I learned that Here After AI, whose goal is to let the living communicate with the dead, was looking for applicants of its new AI project. Interested in what it was promising, I applied to experiment the software on my very-much-alive parents.

At first, I thought it would be just a fun project to see what was technologically possible. Then their health condition added some urgency to the experiment. I was frightened that my parents might die since my father had been diagnosed with cancer and my mother was recently developing symptoms of early Alzheimer's disease, and that with the distance between us, I might never have the chance to say goodbye.

The first step was an interview. My parents were asked questions by a techician for hours-about everything from their earliest memories to what they believe will happen after they die. Whether through illness-generated concerns or a willingness to humor their daughter, my parents put up zero resistance. The company then took their responses and started to create the voice assistants. A few months later, my virtual parents arrived via email attachment.

When I communicated with them through the app on my phone, my hands were shaking. I hadn't seen my actual, real parents for six months. They told me personal stories I'd never heard. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was mesmerizing.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about my experiment. I'm glad to have my virtual parents. They've enabled me to learn new things about my parents, and it's comforting to think that those softwares will be there even when my parents aren't. On the other hand, I can't help but find it sad that it took a stranger interviewing my parents for me to properly appreciate the complex people they are. But I feel lucky to have had the chance to grasp that-and to still have the precious opportunity to spend more time with them and learn more about them, face to face, no technology involved.
