"I should be studying for my mid- term exams," I thought, "not lying here in bed. But my strange illness made me come back home from school in the middle of the term. Now, I have to wait for a specialist who can't see me until the end of the month."
I had been so positive about getting answers for my muscle weakness, but I wok e up with my feelings just as heavy as my body. I started doubting the hope I was holding on to. At this point, I had been lying in bed for two months with no improvement.
I was falling in and out of sleep when I heard a knock at the door. It was a nurse. After I had fainted (昏厥) from tiredness at the doctor's office a month earlier, he decided I was too weak to leave my house, so he ordered in- home care. But it was a Friday night. Nurses never came this late.
My mom walked the nurse upstairs to my bedroom. She looked very concerned.
"Hi, Alyssa, I'm Grace," she said. "I saw your blood work, and your numbers are all over the place. We need to get you into a hospital soon. You know what? My brother worked at a medical center. I'll get you an appointment there first thing Monday morning.
Up until this point, doctors had been telling me that I was stressed and just needed rest, or that something was so wrong that life as I knew would never be the same. What I needed was someone to know that I was living in a very dark place, and to shine some light into my situation. Thank Grace for her appearance.
On Saturday morning, we arrived at the medical center. Because of Grace, my name was in their system and I was agreed to be checked in and seen by their doctors.
The doctors immediately diagnosed (诊断) me with the muscle disease called myasthenia gravis (重症肌无力). They found all of this and more.

7、One popular tool to help people understand their influence on climate change is a carbon footprint calculator (碳足迹计算器). There are many of these calculators online. You can enter details like what type of transportation you use to go to work, how often you eat red meat, and if you wash your clothes in cold water.
But some people think that focusing on your carbon footprint is not very useful. Instead, a new idea called the climate shadow (阴影) has become popular. This idea was first introduced by a writer named Emma Pattee from Portland, Oregon. The climate shadow looks at all of a person's choices and their influence on the planet. The bigger the shadow, the more positive influence a person has on the planet.
Pattee explained her idea, "Your climate shadow is like a dark shape that follows you everywhere. It counts not only how much air conditioning you use and how much gas your car uses, but also how you vote, how many children you have, where you work, how you invest your money, how much you talk about climate change, and whether your words make people feel urgent, indifferent, or in denial about climate change."
For example, if you put solar panels (太阳能电池板) on your roof, your carbon footprint might get smaller. But your climate shadow would get bigger if you talk to your neighbors about your choice. Even just having solar panels on your roof can influence your neighbors to get their own. Studies show that people are more likely to install solar panels if their neighbors have them.
In other words, the climate shadow idea encourages actions that inspire others. Your climate shadow grows when your actions, even unknowingly, motivate others to take positive steps for the planet.
(1)、Who introduced the idea of the climate shadow?A、An environmental organization. B、A government organization. C、Emma Pattee. D、A group of scientists from Portland.(2)、What does climate shadow focus more on compared with carbon footprint?A、The practical result. B、The use of energy. C、The scientific meaning. D、Improve.(4)、What is the best title for this text?A、Understanding Your Climate Shadow B、Reducing Your Carbon Footprint C、The Benefits of Solar Panels D、How to Use a Carbon Footprint Calculator -
8、AI is becoming more and more common in modern healthcare, especially in the field of radiology (放射学), where it can be used to analyse scan image (分析扫描图像). But while the radiology community, including children's radiologists, are generally positive about AI use, little attention has been paid to how children and young adults feel about using AI to analyse their own scan images.
A national study, led by UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), asked children and young people aged 6 to 23 years old, across all four UK nations for their ideas on how they would like AI to be used in their healthcare.
The results of the survey showed that children and young people are cautious (谨慎的), but generally positive about AI. Young people didn't mind using AI in healthcare, especially if it could improve their care and outcomes. However, they wanted the tools to be directed by healthcare professionals as they feel there are something that AI cannot do and when faced between a human and computer, they would be more willing to trust the human.
Lead researcher, Professor Susan Shelmerdine and her team are hoping to develop AI tools that can create written reports direct from radiology images and allow patients to ask the AI questions about their imaging.
Professor Shelmerdine said, "The number of trained children's radiologists in the UK is relatively small, so tools like AI could help upskill our workforce to enable more care for patients who don't have the chance to visit specialist hospitals like GOSH."
"However, we cannot assume that we know what children want. It was encouraging to see that when asked, children and young people were positive about the use of AI in their healthcare, but it was also important to understand what was important to them— such as human oversight— so that we can factor this into the development of new tools and treatments," Shelmerdine added.
(1)、Which question might children be asked to answer in the survey?A、Do you mind using AI in your healthcare? B、Do you know the benefit of AI technology? C、Are you cautious about the use of AI technology? D、Have you ever seen AI technology used in a hospital?(2)、What concerns young adults about AI in their healthcare?A、AI might cause harm to their health. B、AI may not be as trustworthy as humans. C、AI will make human doctors lose their jobs. D、AI can cause more mistakes in radiology images.(3)、What is the goal of the AI tools being developed by Shelmerdine's team?A、To attract more children's radiologists. B、To train workforce to care for more people. C、To replace children's radiologists completely. D、To report radiology images in written forms.(4)、What is Shelmerdine's attitude toward using AI in children's healthcare?A、Unclear. B、Positive. C、Cautious. D、Unacceptable. -

10、Having retired from the job at the brewery (啤酒厂), Harold Fry is leading a simple life with his wife Maureen when an unexpected mail arrives. The sender is a former woman colleague Harold hasn't heard about for twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice (临终关怀医院) and is writing to say goodbye. Harold immediately writes a reply and walks eagerly to the nearest mailbox to send it.
However, there is something inside him that makes him give up the thought of posting and despite Maureen's disagreement, he starts to walk to the faraway Berwick to meet Queenie in person, lasting 87 days.
I first heard about this book The Unlikely Pilgrimage (特别之行) of Harold Fry when I was watching the interview of author Santa Montefiore. This book was a part of her reading list at her friend's suggestion, so I decided to buy it in the bookstore during this summer. And undoubtedly I made the right choice!
The book has been divided into several chapters and it is more of a collection of short stories. In each chapter, Harold comes across different people, from a garage girl to a manager in the café, each telling a story and influencing Harold in some way. As chapters progress, you get to see a change in Harold.
When Harold makes this long single journey through the countryside, he eats wild berries and sometimes camps in fields, but my favorite parts are that he often engages (使参与) himself in his past. He looks back to his life, his father, wife, son, and Queenie. I felt this is a reminder for all of us to have a moment of our own during our busy schedule.
For a first novel, Joyce has written an incredible story. From the title of the book to the characters, everything is well organized. The story has the energy of an adventure and at the same time, it's emotionally inspiring.
I don't think the adapted film is better than the paper book. It's one of those books where you feel the characters and their lives not by discussing, but only by reading it.
(1)、What is the text?A、A book review. B、A moving story. C、A travel guide. D、A diary.(2)、How did the author first hear of the book?A、From a bookshop owner. B、From a book. C、From a friend's recommendation. D、From an author's interview.(3)、Which part of the book does the author most appreciate?A、Harold's work experience. B、Harold's experiences in fields. C、Harold's reflection on past life. D、The challenges Harold faces along the way.(4)、How does the author suggest truly appreciating the book?A、By discussing it with others. B、By watching a film adaptation. C、By reading to feel the characters' lives. D、By relating it to one's own life experiences. -

It was my inaugural year as an educator in a special needs classroom, and I harbored a degree of uncertainty regarding what to anticipate at our annual Special Olympics track meet. My students presented a spectrum of challenges, ranging from mild learning disabilities to severe palsy. Mark was one of the latter, confined to a motorized wheelchair and constantly battling his spasms to maintain control over his movements. Despite this, he consistently exhibited a positive disposition, greeting everyone each morning with an expansive smile.
His classmates held him in high regard and made a concerted effort to ensure his inclusion in group activities. This was particularly evident with Mike, Andy, and Lucas, three boys who excelled in sports. In my heart, I knew Mark aspired to be like them, unencumbered by the physical limitations that bound him, and the grace with which they navigated the playing field seemed to captivate him with a sense of wonder. He never missed their competitions and was always their most ardent supporter. Witnessing Mike, Andy, and Lucas cross the finish line, Mark's excitement was palpable.
On the day of the track and field event, Mike, Andy, and Lucas performed admirably in their heats, providing the typically tranquil crowd with ample reason to cheer. Mark, seated on the sidelines, enthusiastically cheered them on, though he finished last in his own heat due to the limitations of his wheelchair's speed.
The culminating event of the day was the 400-meter race, in which everyone was invited to participate, either by walking or running, according to their capabilities, around the entire circumference of the track. We observed as the sprinters launched into action — Mike, Andy, and Lucas, each intent on demonstrating their athletic prowess.
However, as the trio of exhausted runners reached the finish line, they paused and turned to survey the scene behind them. At the rear of the crowd, resolutely determined not to be left behind, was Mark. His classmates had already surpassed him, and even the slowest walkers were outpacing him.

13、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Getting angry could help you achieve your goals, a new research suggests. Often (perceive) as a negative emotion, anger can actually be powerful (motivate) for people to meet challenging targets in their lives. It is useful in achieving more challenging goals, does not appear to be linked to easier tasks. The finding also suggests emotions that are often considered negative, such as anger, boredom,or sadness, can be useful.
Lead author Heather Lench, a professor at Texas A and M University, USA, stated that people often believed a state of happiness was ideal, and the majority of people regarded the pursuit of happiness as a major life goal." The view that positive emotions are perfect for mental health and well being (be) noticeable in psychological accounts of emotion, but many researches suggest a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, result in (good) outcomes." She added that the functionalist theory of emotion suggests that all emotions, good or bad, are reactions events within a person's environment and serve the purpose of alerting that person to important situations that require actions.
In the study researchers conducted experiments (involve) more than 1,000 people, and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. The researchers found that anger increased effort towards attaining a desired goal, (frequent) leading to greater success and the effects of anger in encouraging people to reach for and achieve their goals were specific to situations the goals were more difficult to realize.

15、In order to recover from mental distress, there's really no alternative but to get acquainted with psychotherapy.
Every human is in part neurotic (神经质).
A neurosis is any pattern of thinking or behavior that blocks our personalities and potential. . It should be part of every evolved human's mission to seek to understand the neurotic elements of their own personalities. The enquiry "And how are you neurotic?" should not be taken as an insult rather a sensible request for more information on our particular flaws.
The origins of most of our neuroses lie in our childhoods
. A trauma (创伤) may be continuous petty criticism or emotional neglect. Something qualities as a trauma because the child isn't able to make sense of the extreme pain and therefore suffers a serious blow to its command of trust, intelligence, and love.
Where there is an over-controlling parent, there will be a child with problems around autonomy (自主权). Where there is a belittling parent, there will be a child with difficulties of confidence and self-esteem. Every character flaw on the side of the parent necessarily imposes a toll on a child.
Healing comes through self-awareness.
To improve, we need to get rid of the state of depression and recover contact with the original trauma. And in order to do that, we need to accept that doing so would be a good idea. .
It won't be enough to know the past, we will need to feel it too.
We may have a practical sense of the central details of our childhoods, but an intellectual grasp won't be enough. We need to sincerely reexperience rather than merely intellectually know the past to free ourselves from its hold. Our neuroses will weaken or dissolve once the traumas are finally known and, even more importantly, felt.
A. Parents tend to give rise to a neurosis.
B. Its central ideas can be summarized as follows.
C. We have to agree that self-knowledge will be what can save us.
D. Parents assist their children in figuring out the difficulties.
E. Trauma leads to depression which overtime inspires the formation of neurotic symptoms.
F. What causes neuroses are intolerable frustrations and pains that we can refer to as traumas.
G. We may be neurotic in love or at work, in our friendships or in our attitudes to creativity or politics.

16、For years, music industry experts have warned that technological changes could lead to a shift in music consumption patterns, a decline in album sales, and challenges for traditional record labels. However, there's a silver lining: In Silicon Valley, one of the world‘s major tech hubs, technological innovation may actually enhance the music experience — for now.
A 70-year analysis of music critic scores in Silicon Valley, combined with data on technological advancements, showed that the quality of music — based on factors such as creativity and production value — has improved over time, according to a study.
From 1950 to 2020, researchers examined the variations in overall music quality in Silicon Valley. The team's statistical models tested how music quality was related to technological factors such as the availability of digital platforms, advancements in sound engineering, and the ease of music distribution.
The highest-quality music emerged during periods of rapid technological innovation, with increased access to digital platforms, improved sound quality, and more efficient distribution methods. Technological advancements are expected to make these conditions more prevalent in the region. For instance, it is predicted that by 2050, advancements in artificial intelligence will revolutionize music production, allowing for more complex and innovative compositions. Digital platforms have also democratized music distribution, enabling independent artists to reach wider audiences.
Study leader Emily was surprised to find that increased investment in music technology during periods of economic downturn resulted in higher quality music for the following years. "Traditionally, we focus on the immediate impact of technology on music production. However, the infrastructure built during these times has a lasting effect on the industry," says Emily. More investment in technology might lead to better resources and tools for artists. "Empowered artists create better music," says Emily.

B、The positive effects of increased investment on music quality. C、The importance of traditional music production methods. D、The role of independent artists in the music industry.(4)、In which section of a website can we read this text?A、Science. B、Lifestyle. C、Technology. D、Entertainment. -
17、This year has brought some exciting developments in the field of space exploration. The new spacecraft "Starship," developed through a collaboration between SpaceX and NASA, successfully launched and returned to Earth in September. This achievement marks a significant step forward in humanity's journey into space.
Space exploration has long been a dream for humanity, as it not only expands our horizons but also has the potential to unlock new resources and knowledge. The vastness of space offers countless opportunities for scientific discovery and technological advancement. For instance, the exploration of other planets and celestial bodies could lead to breakthroughs in understanding the origins of the universe and the possibility of life beyond Earth.
In July, the International Space Agency (ISA) fully approved the use of advanced propulsion systems for future missions. This technology is designed to "increase the speed and efficiency of spacecraft, allowing them to travel farther and faster than ever before," according to space expert Dr. Emily Johnson. As a result, these systems can only be effective for missions that require long-duration travel, such as those to Mars or the outer planets.
However, space exploration is not without its challenges. According to the ISA's press release, after a 79-week trial of the new propulsion systems, it was found that while they could enhance the capabilities of spacecraft, they could not yet overcome all the obstacles associated with deep space travel, such as radiation exposure and the psychological impact on astronauts. What they offer is a way for space missions to achieve more ambitious goals and push the boundaries of human exploration.
According to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, at least 90 countries are currently involved in space activities, with the number of space missions increasing rapidly each year. As scientists continue to make efforts, there is growing hope that they can one day create a future where space exploration is not only feasible but also sustainable.

D、Negative.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Advances in Space Exploration Technology B、The Promise of New Spacecraft for Future Missions C、The Challenges and Rewards of Space Exploration D、The Role of Propulsion Systems in Space Travel -
18、Ryan is a young individual of commendable character, consistently achieving stellar academic results, demonstrating proficiency in the sport of lacrosse, and enjoying widespread admiration. Consequently, Jennifer and her spouse perceived no evident reason to withhold an Instagram account from their son, who was in the sixth grade, until Ryan posted an image of himself grasping an empty beer bottle that his father had just drained. "My husband observed the photograph materialize on Ryan's profile and promptly ascended the stairs, insisting that he remove it without delay," Jennifer narrates. "I surmise that my son did not grasp the severity of the impression his picture conveyed. He was endeavoring to be humorous, yet he is still in the sixth grade! Even if he was simply posing, that image was exceedingly inappropriate."
With the burgeoning popularity of the photo-sharing platform Instagram, it is not uncommon for parents to cultivate a misplaced sense of security. Unlike Facebook or Twitter, which encompass a more extensive array of content, Instagram is predominantly dedicated to the posting of images. Coupled with the age requirement of 13 and its privacy settings, it appears to be an almost innocuous site for children. How much mischief could they conceivably cause? However, this is not the actuality.
Surprisingly, some youngsters are resorting to paying for attention on social media. When Paula Pryor detected an enigmatic charge of $700 on her credit card, the last thing she anticipated was that it was a payment to a company that facilitated the acquisition of "likes" for Instagram photographs. "My son Hayden believed it was merely ten dollars, but it was ten dollars per ‘like'," Pryor elucidates.
Often, the cause for concern is not one's own adolescent—it's someone else's child. Megan Koster was perplexed as to why her daughter Delaney suddenly became so apprehensive about whether her panty line was discernible through her jeans. Eventually, Delaney disclosed that she was worried someone might capture a photograph and post it on Instagram. "I don't think I would have survived middle school if websites like this had existed back then," Koster laments.
(1)、What made Jennifer think her son Ryan could have an Instagram account?A、He gained popularity in school. B、He was skilled at using Instagram. C、He showed interest in taking photos. D、He was old enough and behaved well.(2)、What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 2 refer to?A、Instagram accounts. B、Social media. C、Pictures. D、Children.(3)、Why did Pryor's son pay the company $700?A、To obtain the picture he liked. B、To pay attention to social media. C、To get his photos noticed and liked. D、To pay the charge on his credit card.(4)、What's the text mainly about?A、Teen's problems with Instagram. B、Inappropriate pictures from children. C、The influence of the Internet on young users. D、Concerns for the Internet security for children. -

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day, for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was guiding nurse that day and had just done clean-up in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, "Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room."
"Well, there are five signed in."
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
"Are you all sick?" I asked suspiciously.
"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.
"Okay," I replied, unconvinced, "Who's first?" One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients. She responded, "Take your time; it's warm in here and there is a Christmas tree."
