Getting angry could help you achieve your goals, a new research suggests. Often (perceive) as a negative emotion, anger can actually be powerful (motivate) for people to meet challenging targets in their lives. It is useful in achieving more challenging goals, does not appear to be linked to easier tasks. The finding also suggests emotions that are often considered negative, such as anger, boredom,or sadness, can be useful.

Lead author Heather Lench, a professor at Texas A and M University, USA, stated that people often believed a state of happiness was ideal, and the majority of people regarded the pursuit of happiness as a major life goal." The view that positive emotions are perfect for mental health and well being (be) noticeable in psychological accounts of emotion, but many researches suggest a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, result in (good) outcomes." She added that the functionalist theory of emotion suggests that all emotions, good or bad, are reactions events within a person's environment and serve the purpose of alerting that person to important situations that require actions.

In the study researchers conducted experiments (involve) more than 1,000 people, and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. The researchers found that anger increased effort towards attaining a desired goal, (frequent) leading to greater success and the effects of anger in encouraging people to reach for and achieve their goals were specific to situations the goals were more difficult to realize.

  • 3、In order to recover from mental distress, there's really no alternative but to get acquainted with psychotherapy.

Every human is in part neurotic (神经质).

A neurosis is any pattern of thinking or behavior that blocks our personalities and potential. . It should be part of every evolved human's mission to seek to understand the neurotic elements of their own personalities. The enquiry "And how are you neurotic?" should not be taken as an insult rather a sensible request for more information on our particular flaws.

The origins of most of our neuroses lie in our childhoods

. A trauma (创伤) may be continuous petty criticism or emotional neglect. Something qualities as a trauma because the child isn't able to make sense of the extreme pain and therefore suffers a serious blow to its command of trust, intelligence, and love.

Where there is an over-controlling parent, there will be a child with problems around autonomy (自主权). Where there is a belittling parent, there will be a child with difficulties of confidence and self-esteem. Every character flaw on the side of the parent necessarily imposes a toll on a child.

    Healing comes through self-awareness.

To improve, we need to get rid of the state of depression and recover contact with the original trauma. And in order to do that, we need to accept that doing so would be a good idea. .

It won't be enough to know the past, we will need to feel it too.

We may have a practical sense of the central details of our childhoods, but an intellectual grasp won't be enough. We need to sincerely reexperience rather than merely intellectually know the past to free ourselves from its hold. Our neuroses will weaken or dissolve once the traumas are finally known and, even more importantly, felt.

    A. Parents tend to give rise to a neurosis.

    B. Its central ideas can be summarized as follows.

    C. We have to agree that self-knowledge will be what can save us.

    D. Parents assist their children in figuring out the difficulties.

    E. Trauma leads to depression which overtime inspires the formation of neurotic symptoms.

    F. What causes neuroses are intolerable frustrations and pains that we can refer to as traumas.

    G. We may be neurotic in love or at work, in our friendships or in our attitudes to creativity or politics.

  • 4、For years, music industry experts have warned that technological changes could lead to a shift in music consumption patterns, a decline in album sales, and challenges for traditional record labels. However, there's a silver lining: In Silicon Valley, one of the world‘s major tech hubs, technological innovation may actually enhance the music experience — for now.

A 70-year analysis of music critic scores in Silicon Valley, combined with data on technological advancements, showed that the quality of music — based on factors such as creativity and production value — has improved over time, according to a study.

From 1950 to 2020, researchers examined the variations in overall music quality in Silicon Valley. The team's statistical models tested how music quality was related to technological factors such as the availability of digital platforms, advancements in sound engineering, and the ease of music distribution.

The highest-quality music emerged during periods of rapid technological innovation, with increased access to digital platforms, improved sound quality, and more efficient distribution methods. Technological advancements are expected to make these conditions more prevalent in the region. For instance, it is predicted that by 2050, advancements in artificial intelligence will revolutionize music production, allowing for more complex and innovative compositions. Digital platforms have also democratized music distribution, enabling independent artists to reach wider audiences.

Study leader Emily was surprised to find that increased investment in music technology during periods of economic downturn resulted in higher quality music for the following years. "Traditionally, we focus on the immediate impact of technology on music production. However, the infrastructure built during these times has a lasting effect on the industry," says Emily. More investment in technology might lead to better resources and tools for artists. "Empowered artists create better music," says Emily.

(1)、What may be the effect of technological innovation on music in Silicon Valley in paragraph 1?
A、The music experience is enhanced. B、The cost of music production is higher. C、The number of record labels increases. D、The quality of music is lower.

  • 5、This year has brought some exciting developments in the field of space exploration. The new spacecraft "Starship," developed through a collaboration between SpaceX and NASA, successfully launched and returned to Earth in September. This achievement marks a significant step forward in humanity's journey into space.

Space exploration has long been a dream for humanity, as it not only expands our horizons but also has the potential to unlock new resources and knowledge. The vastness of space offers countless opportunities for scientific discovery and technological advancement. For instance, the exploration of other planets and celestial bodies could lead to breakthroughs in understanding the origins of the universe and the possibility of life beyond Earth.

In July, the International Space Agency (ISA) fully approved the use of advanced propulsion systems for future missions. This technology is designed to "increase the speed and efficiency of spacecraft, allowing them to travel farther and faster than ever before," according to space expert Dr. Emily Johnson. As a result, these systems can only be effective for missions that require long-duration travel, such as those to Mars or the outer planets.

However, space exploration is not without its challenges. According to the ISA's press release, after a 79-week trial of the new propulsion systems, it was found that while they could enhance the capabilities of spacecraft, they could not yet overcome all the obstacles associated with deep space travel, such as radiation exposure and the psychological impact on astronauts. What they offer is a way for space missions to achieve more ambitious goals and push the boundaries of human exploration.

According to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, at least 90 countries are currently involved in space activities, with the number of space missions increasing rapidly each year. As scientists continue to make efforts, there is growing hope that they can one day create a future where space exploration is not only feasible but also sustainable.

  • 6、Ryan is a young individual of commendable character, consistently achieving stellar academic results, demonstrating proficiency in the sport of lacrosse, and enjoying widespread admiration. Consequently, Jennifer and her spouse perceived no evident reason to withhold an Instagram account from their son, who was in the sixth grade, until Ryan posted an image of himself grasping an empty beer bottle that his father had just drained. "My husband observed the photograph materialize on Ryan's profile and promptly ascended the stairs, insisting that he remove it without delay," Jennifer narrates. "I surmise that my son did not grasp the severity of the impression his picture conveyed. He was endeavoring to be humorous, yet he is still in the sixth grade! Even if he was simply posing, that image was exceedingly inappropriate."

With the burgeoning popularity of the photo-sharing platform Instagram, it is not uncommon for parents to cultivate a misplaced sense of security. Unlike Facebook or Twitter, which encompass a more extensive array of content, Instagram is predominantly dedicated to the posting of images. Coupled with the age requirement of 13 and its privacy settings, it appears to be an almost innocuous site for children. How much mischief could they conceivably cause? However, this is not the actuality.

Surprisingly, some youngsters are resorting to paying for attention on social media. When Paula Pryor detected an enigmatic charge of $700 on her credit card, the last thing she anticipated was that it was a payment to a company that facilitated the acquisition of "likes" for Instagram photographs. "My son Hayden believed it was merely ten dollars, but it was ten dollars per ‘like'," Pryor elucidates.

Often, the cause for concern is not one's own adolescent—it's someone else's child. Megan Koster was perplexed as to why her daughter Delaney suddenly became so apprehensive about whether her panty line was discernible through her jeans. Eventually, Delaney disclosed that she was worried someone might capture a photograph and post it on Instagram. "I don't think I would have survived middle school if websites like this had existed back then," Koster laments.

(1)、What made Jennifer think her son Ryan could have an Instagram account?
A、He gained popularity in school. B、He was skilled at using Instagram. C、He showed interest in taking photos. D、He was old enough and behaved well.
(2)、What does the underlined word "they" in paragraph 2 refer to?
    A、Instagram accounts. B、Social media. C、Pictures. D、Children.
(3)、Why did Pryor's son pay the company $700?
A、To obtain the picture he liked. B、To pay attention to social media. C、To get his photos noticed and liked. D、To pay the charge on his credit card.
    (4)、What's the text mainly about?
A、Teen's problems with Instagram. B、Inappropriate pictures from children. C、The influence of the Internet on young users. D、Concerns for the Internet security for children.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day, for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.

I was guiding nurse that day and had just done clean-up in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.

I was surprised, "Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room."

"Well, there are five signed in."

So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.

"Are you all sick?" I asked suspiciously.

"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.

"Okay," I replied, unconvinced, "Who's first?" One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.

Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients. She responded, "Take your time; it's warm in here and there is a Christmas tree."

  • 12、Why are Police Officers Called Cops?

Police officers are often referred to as cops. Some argue the term is shortened from "copper" and comes from copper badges (徽章) worn by a policeman. Others say that it stands for "Constabulary of Police".

General agreement on the word origins of "cop", however, suggests that the term is based more on the policeman's job than on his clothing or job title. In Latin, the verb capere can be defined as "to capture." In French, the verb is caper. "To cop" in English is to seize or to take.

Some also believe that the Dutch word kapen, which also loosely translates to "to steal or take", is related to policemen being called coppers or cops. Essentially, the police force was there to take criminals off the streets. And since American English especially draws from German, French, and Latin, the specific language origin of kapen or capere creates a ready path to the term "cop".

And it is no longer considered rude. However, certain other terms for police officers are definitely unwelcome. While British Police might not mind being called "bobbies", no police members like to be referred to as "pigs" or the "fuzz". Some don't mind the term the "heat" as applied to the whole police force, but the police force does not generally take kindly to terms given to them by criminals.

The term "cop" is in such common usage now that a show documenting their work on the job is called Cops. Even though J. Edgar Hoover once highly objected to the term, it is now fine to refer to a policeman or a police woman as a cop.

    A. The term is slightly less familiar to people.

    B. So, the Latin, Dutch, and French terms are all similar.

    C. These words define some of what a police officer does.

    D. The profession of a police officer was not respected then.

    E. But the origins of this nickname are something of a debate.

    F. However, the term "police officer" is generally most correct.

    G. Today it is appropriate to call members of the police force cops.

  • 13、Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become.

As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn't actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process.

One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly's wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around.

My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078 mm by 0.053 mm.

I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It's pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures.

The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I've tried to make bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.

(1)、What drove the author to make tiny sculpture at the beginning?
A、His interest in insects. B、His desire to make a name. C、His dream of setting a record. D、His awareness of wildlife protection.

A、Eventful and enjoyable. B、Complex and frustrating. C、Money-wasting but entertaining. D、Time-consuming but fulfilling.
(3)、How does the author deal with his autism now?
A、He receives medical treatment. B、He takes full advantage of it. C、He regards it as the source of failure. D、He shares it and asks help from others.
(4)、What message does the author mainly convey through the text?
A、Great art comes at a cost of loss. B、Minor things in life can carry weight. C、Childhood experiences sculpt a career. D、Hard work contributes to great achievements.

I stood in the restaurant kitchen, my eyes wide, arms hanging awkwardly, ready to work but unsure of what to do. "You will be trained first," my manager Aaron said, "and do remember to check every detail!" With these words, he walked away.

A workmate threw me a dish brush and said, "Let's get started." He introduced me to the basics of washing dishes and demonstrated the process. This was the beginning of my part-time job, a new stage where I was both eager to learn and anxious about the challenges ahead.

On a Friday night, Aaron swiftly entered the kitchen. "Who has just bused (收拾) the back right table?" he shouted, his voice sharp with urgency. My hands, slippery with bubbles from the bowl I was washing, nearly let it slip through my fingers. I wanted to say I was guilty, but Aaron's cold stare didn't promise a happy reward for the guy who admitted. Finally, a mix of fear and my own conscience pushed the response out of my mouth.

    "I did, Aaron."

"What were you thinking? Get back out here and look at what you missed!" His words forced me forward. I grabbed a rag (抹布) and followed him out to table twenty-two. As we made our way through the restaurant, he said something about rags, but I didn't hear clearly with other conversations going on around us.

I quickly realized the true issue was the mess beneath the table. A nearly full cup of beer had tipped over, creating a small lake on the floor. It was a significant mistake on my part. "Take care of it!" Aaron tuned and stormed off to the front of the restaurant.

I dropped down to clean up the beer. That was when another problem occurred. I had brought only one rag. One already wet rag. It did nothing but increase the size of the lake. "More rags," I thought. Immediately, I rushed into the kitchen and hurriedly grabbed five dry rags, hoping Aaron wouldn't notice my brief absence.

  • 16、We had a military training for a whole week in late August after stepping into our new senior high school. The military coaches were all strict with us. Frankly speaking, we all felt very tired, and even had pains in our legs. However, we all persisted in practising, and felt satisfied with ourselves eventually.

In the morning we arrived at the playground in lines on time. Then you could hear our military coaches shout at the top of their voices"Stand at attention", "Stand at ease","Turn left","March","Run…", All the students were practicing carefully. Exhausted as we were, none of us asked to have a rest, none of us complained, none of us wanted to drop out. Under the blazing sun, despite high temperature and thirst, we stood still for an hour with sweat dripping down from our faces all the time. In the moonlight, we played games heartily, bursting into laughter now and then. On the grass, divided into two groups, we competed to sing encouraging military songs in high spirits one after another. At the meeting, hearing their moving speech, we felt regretful for wasting time before. At that time we realized we should have been grateful to our parents and teachers, with tears in our eyes. And we all made up our minds to study harder. On the afternoon of the last day, our principal sang high praise for our behaviour, and encouraged us to keep this persistent spirit in future.

Though this military training is a tough experience, we challenged ourselves and overcame those difficulties. We felt proud from the bottom of our hearts. There is no doubt that this military training has left a deep and durable impression on me, on all my classmates.

My daughter and I pushed the overloaded cart in the store. She reached up and took another toy, and without asking, threw it in the cart. "Is that for you?" I asked.

"No, it is for my friend," she answered. I was proud of her. Being an only child and an only grandchild, she could have been spoiled (宠坏), but instead she was caring and very giving, almost more than necessary.

On the drive home, my daughter was unusually quiet. Finally, she said, "Mommy, if Santa brings all the gifts, why are we buying them?" I quickly tried to think of an answer. Before I could say anything, she shouted, "I know why. We're Santa's helpers!" Yes, she took the words right out of my mouth. Yes, that's exactly what we are.

After a few days, she came home from school quite upset, explaining, "Mommy, there's a girl in my class who's very mean (吝啬) to me and my friends. She is Lucy. We talk to her anyway, and when we asked her what she was getting for Christmas, she started crying. She said she wasn't getting anything because her mother is always sick and her father doesn't have the money to pay for anything, not even food."

I calmed her down, knowing what she was thinking about.

One evening before Christmas vacation, my daughter began to wrap (包装) the gifts for her friends. I gave her a roll of wrapping paper, but she came back and asked for more. I thought it was strange, but I was busy then, only telling her to get whatever she needed.

On the last day of school, I had to leave for work extra early, so I asked my friend to pick up my daughter since she had quite a few gifts to take for the class Christmas party. I never actually saw what my daughter took to school.

On Christmas Eve, I went to wrap gifts, but all of them were missing. I looked high and low and couldn't find them.
