Imagine you need milk so you go to the grocery store to pick some up, only to find there are dozens of options. These days, you have to make a decision on not only the percentage of fat you want, but also what source you want your milk to be coming from: cows, soybeans... You have no idea what milk to pick. There are so many choices that you are confused.

This phenomenon is known as the paradox (悖论) of choice and it is becoming a concern in the modern world, where more and more options are becoming easily available to us. While we might believe that being presented with multiple options actually makes it easier to choose one that we are happy with, and thus increases consumer satisfaction, having too many options actually requires more effort to make a decision and can leave us feeling unsatisfied with our choice.

The idea was popularized by American psychologist Barry Schwartz when he published his book, The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less. Schwartz, who has long studied the ways in which economics and psychology intersect (交叉), became interested in seeing the way that choices were affecting the happiness of citizens in Western societies. He identified that the range of choices that we have available to us these days is far greater than that people had in the past; however, consumer satisfaction has not increased as much as traditional economics theories might expect.

Schwartz identified that the paradox of choice carries the most consequence for people that are maximizers. Maximizers, unlike satisficers, are concerned with making the best choice instead of simply making a choice that they are happy with. When there are many options available to maximizers, it becomes harder for them to determine which is the best, which can cause them to feel a great deal of regret after they have made a choice.

Instead of believing that freedom of choice is unlimited, Schwartz advocates that the role of psychology and behavioral economics should be to find the kind of limitations on freedom that can lead to the greatest level of happiness within society.

In general, the society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic (官僚主义的) management in which man becomes a small, well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, well-equipped factories and piped music, and by psychologists and "human-relations" experts; yet all this oiling does not change the fact that man has become powerless, that he does not wholeheartedly participate in his work and he is bored with it. In fact, the blue-collar and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management.

The worker and employee are anxious, seemingly because they might find themselves out of a job or they would say that they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction or interest in life. In fact, they feel desperate as they live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings. 

Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of submissiveness and independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one's fellow-competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.

Am I suggesting a return to the pre-industrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century "free enterprise" capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming the social system from a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maximal production and consumption are ends in themselves into a humanist industrialism in which man and full development of his potentialities — those of all love and of reason — are the aims of social arrangements. Production and consumption should serve as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling man.

When I saw the documentary ADHD (多动症): Not Just for Kids, I was in tears after 20 minutes — the stories being told sounded much like my own. I'm in my 40s, I had read everything there was in health and science and I had no idea that the symptoms (症状) I had experienced all of my life were anything but normal. How had I missed this? I called the doctor to get assessed. I must have sounded desperate on the phone; they took me right away.

Later, I researched everything I could about ADHD. It became clear that my misunderstanding and ignorance about the disorder had misled me. A million thoughts, a million regrets. Finally, I told myself I couldn't change the past, but I could share the fact that ADHD can look much different from the super active child practicing back flips (后空翻) off of a chair.

As for me, things went another way around: I was a young girl, quietly sitting at my school desk, pretending to listen to the teacher. Meanwhile, I was watching and drawing the bird that landed in the tree outside. And I was rereading entire chapters of my textbooks and taking extensive notes because I couldn't remember what I had just read because I was thinking of the bird I had seen earlier.

Later in life, I'd sit at the kitchen table, staring out the window. There's no telling how long it will take. Thoughts rush in from yesterday, today and tomorrow. I need to make dinner, take the dog for a walk, the kids will be home soon... But I can't move. I know that I should, but I can't. Afterward, I berate myself, unable to understand why I didn't get up, why I wasted so much precious time, so much of my life doing nothing, it seems.

Since being treated, I have an inner calmness that is new to me. Medication doesn't organize my day; it doesn't remind me to pick up the kids or walk the dog. However, it allows me to move when I've been staring out the window for too long.

Posture (姿势) correcting chair

Kulsoom Rizavi, La Martiniere Girls' College

With sensors at appropriate places, the chair alarms the user when their sitting posture is wrong. Kulsoom dreamed up this idea after being regularly criticized by her mother for her bad posture. She thought that while it may not be possible to be reminded again and again by someone for sitting wrongly, this task can be done by the chair itself.

Sudden fall detector

The wearable device alarms others when the user falls suddenly. It is useful for old people and those suffering from fits, epilepsy (癫痫), etc. It will help keep an electronic eye on one's loved ones. The idea struck Soumya Ranjan when his grandma suffered an epileptic attack and fell down. He wondered, what if she wasn't around?

Nilsa stared at the clock on the classroom wall, daydreaming about lunch. Her mother had prepared a thermos (保温瓶) full of sancocho. It was one of Nilsa's favorite dishes, and the national dish of Panama — a country in central America and the hometown of Nilsa's family. Just thinking about sancocho made her mouth water.

Finally, it was time for lunch. Nilsa carefully poured some sancocho into a bowl. When she looked up, she saw her classmates staring.

"What is that? It smells really bad," said Gus, covering his nose. "It's sancocho," Nilsa responded. "It's kind of like chicken soup." Codi glanced at the bowl and said, "Soup? When Nilsa returned home and complained about her classmates' negative comments, her mother wasn't mad. Instead, she listened attentively and reminded Nilsa that there is no such thing as "normal" or "weird" food, and that different cultures have their own unique dishes that are loved and appreciated by those who grew up with them.

Nilsa's mother also suggested making a fresh batch for Nilsa to bring to school the next day. It is no secret that China has an   (incredible) rich, complex and ancient history and culture. My first exposure  Chinese culture came at a very early age, totally by chance.

At 8, I walked into a bookshop and picked a book entitled Tao Te Ching, a deeply philosophical book of Taoism. As 8-year-old, the book's content was obviously lost on me, but it provided me with an early connection to a profound philosophical tradition by I am still influenced today.

At school I began studying Chinese. My interest in the language developed early on,(combine) my love of travelling with my love of meeting new people. I am lucky enough to have lived in China for three years. It was a good opportunity for me to experience the(diverse) of Chinese customs and tradition. Culture and food are closely connected and perhaps nowhere else can this be seen more clearlyin China. In recent years there(be) a rise in restaurants offering a variety of foods here. I have introduced many of my friends to Chinese history and culture through a(share) love of food.

It is safe to say that my journey has only just begun. These first steps are only a drop in the ocean of lifelong learning, but as the Chinese philosopher Laozi said, "A journey of a thousand miles (begin) with a single step."

When I was a little girl, every time when my dad was repairing something, he would ask me to hold the hammer. Then we could have a time for a 1  with each other. 

I grew up and left home for the college, and since then, he had been 2  me every Sunday morning. Later, when I bought a house, my dad was 3  it by himself for three days in the 30℃ summer 4 . All he asked for was to hold his paint brush and 5  to him.

Music can reduce anxiety and depression   When it comes to anxiety and depression, music treatment can help to reduce the amount of stress hormones. For example, listening to music that you enjoy can naturally decrease the amount of cortisol (皮质醇) that your body releases.

Music can improve self-expression and communication. Self-expression and communication are an important part of the human experience, especially when it comes to basic emotional and mental health needs.  By listening and singing along to music, kids who struggle to interact and communicate with others can practice using the very skills needed to do so.

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely. 

The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people's wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.

Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: "I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. "

"I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they've gone to bed."

"It's good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I'm enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful."

There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide. 

Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: "Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here."

Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: "We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities."

Have you ever been in mid-conversation with someone, when you look over and find them standing in the same position as you or holding the same facial expression? It may seem like they have consciously copied you, but it is much more likely that it is the chameleon (变色龙) effect at play. 

The chameleon effect is the unconscious imitation of another person's gestures or behavior. Just as a chameleon attempts to match any environment's colors, people acquire the behavior of others to bring them closer together and help make their interactions smooth.

The chameleon effect was confirmed in an experiment by psychologists John Bargh and Tanya Chartrand in 1999. The part of their experiment included 78 people who each spoke with an experimenter. During the test, Bargh and Chartrand studied whether participants would copy the actions of someone they hadn't met before, like moving the foot and touching the face. The second part measured the impact that copying someone has on the person being imitated.

In the first stage, participants increased their face touching by 20% and their foot movement by 50% while in conversation about a photograph with the experimenter. The individuals weren't aware of what they were being studied for, and the photograph was used to catch their attention to insure unconscious acts. The second stage involved half of the participants being copied, and then rating the likability of the experimenter. The results, showed that those who were imitated scored the experimenter higher. It has shown that when someone copies our behavior, we develop more positive feelings about them. These interactions could be a person unconsciously willing to be liked, and forming a moment of connection.

The main reasons behind humans' imitation are positive. However, when people carry this chameleon effect to the extreme, they can lose their sense of self. Those who change their entire personalities in different groups often go undetected. But more common signs of the chameleon effect are easier to notice. Next time you are in a social gathering, take a look around and you might just see some chameleons for yourself.

Li Jianguo, a 49-year-old teacher at the Tianjin Vocational Institute, is set to be named as one of the "2022 most beautiful teachers" — an annual public award sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Ministry of Education.

Li has stood out by taking the lead in the training of students in vocational skills, gaining a number of honors including being named a national role model teacher. He has mentored seven national-level technique experts and a team of 14 technique "masters". One of his students, Guo Jinpeng, who graduated from the institute in 2007, became a college teacher at the Chengdu Auto Vocational and Technical School and was named a national role model teacher in 2019.

Li's nomination as one of the "most beautiful teachers" reflects that China is focusing on the importance of vocational education and aims to foster more leading personnel with the spirit of craftsmanship in the manufacturing industry.

At an international vocational and technical education conference in Tianjin last month, Li noted that there is no difference between vocational education and ordinary education, and "vocational education is not "secondary" nor should it ever be treated as less than ordinary education". "Vocational education has the mission of fostering a quality workforce and technical experts for the country. The hardworking spirit is the key to building any ordinary people into leading personnel," he said.

Li joined the institute in 1993 and later founded a machinery engineering practice center, providing free training to 7,500 people a week. In 2015, he led a team of teachers to work for 40 days to renovate 124 machine tools in the center. At first glance she looked like any other old woman, plodding along in the snow , alone, neglected, head bowed. I often find peacefulness in a soaring stone church, a cool open place to sit and contemplate. The giant trunk-like pillars (柱子) and the gentle play of the light cast through a church's stained glass windows create a shaded garden of stone and multicolored light.

Glass itself is one of the fruits of the art of fire. It is a fusion (熔接) of the Earth's rocks melted at high temperatures. Glass's liquid-like structure is one of the main reasons it is transparent (透明). However, "transparent" does not necessarily mean that all light can pass through it. Some obsidian (黑曜石) glasses are so darkly colored that they are effectively black and opaque (不透光的). This is because electrons of some elements in the obsidian are arranged in such a way that their energy is the same as the energy of visible light.

This ability of certain elements to absorb light and give color is used to great effect in stained glass windows. For example, adding cobalt oxide (氧化钴) to the glass during melting will make it blue because cobalt absorbs wavelengths at the red end of the spectrum (光谱)but does not absorb blue.These colors were discovered by the ancients through trial and error, adding different minerals to the melting pot and melting for different periods of time, even though they had no idea what caused them.

The term "stained glass" telescopes (精简) three different processes: coloring, staining and painting, each one complex and requiring the application of many skills. In the mid-16th century, however, different colored enamels (珐琅) began to be used. It has been said that the appearance of enameling was the death of the great stained glass window artists. I am not sure if this is true, but I do know that standing in front of a great stained glass window is a magical experience. Next time you are in a soaring cathedral, take a moment to admire the windows.

Facial expressions are the primary way people exhibit emotion and read the feelings of others. Happiness, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise can be communicated through facial expressions alone. But when part of the face is masked, it becomes more difficult to recognize these cues.

If you cannot read someone else' s emotional state, your ability to empathize with them may be compromised. Likewise, if your own mask is hiding your emotional state, others may not be able to empathize with you. Wearing a mask can also make you feel more distracted and self-conscious, further weakening your connection to others.
