    How to Choose Extracurricular Activities

From sports to clubs to outside organizations, there are many activities to take part in outside the classroom.  Fortunately, it becomes quite easy once you figure out what you enjoy doing in general. With a little more careful thought, you can also choose an activity that interests you.

Think about your interests and know your advantages. Before you start considering specific(具体的)activities, take a step back. Think about what excites you and find your passions(热情).  Now that you have a better idea of what you like to do in general, decide on those that you are good at. Ask yourself what skills they show. Then find activities that require the same ones. Make sure that you will enjoy yourself by choosing an activity that lets you shine.

In addition to your interests and advantages, know what you would like to improve about yourself. Use activities as a way to make yourself better. Find out new challenges, without the added stress of having to earn good grades at them. You can use activities to develop general skills that you may not have.

Find out what activities are available(可用的)and look into each one. If the website seems incomplete, talk with your teacher or parents. Also look for calendar details, such as start-and-end dates, plus event schedules, to make sure it won't get in the way of anything else going on in your life. Once you have a list of activities that match your interests, do a little research.

    A. Think about skills you want to develop.

    B. This can make choosing one a little difficult.

    C. Use your freshman year to explore your choices.

    D. In this way, you will have a better idea of what to expect.

    E. Also make sure that their culture is a good match for your own personality.

    F. Use those to decide on activities that will keep you interested for a long time.

    G. Search your school's website for a complete list of all the activities it provides.

More American businesses are starting to use artificial intelligence(AI)tools to come up with new ideas and to deal with customers.

Mattel is known for making children's toys. The company recently used an AI image generator (生成器) called DALL-E to come up with ideas for new Hot Wheels toy cars. The used vehicle seller CarMax is using ChatGPT to gather thousands of customer comments. The social media service Snapchat has added a chatbot (聊天机器人) to its messaging service. And Instacart, a delivery service, now uses ChatGPT to answer food questions. Even the Coca-Cola company plans to use AI to help create new marketing content. It has not said exactly how it plans to use the technology. But the move shows that businesses are under pressure to use the tools that many of their employees and customers are already trying on their own.

Some experts warn that businesses should carefully consider possible harms to customers, society, and their own companies before choosing to use AI tools in the workplace. Chaire Leibowicz works at The Partnership on AI, a nonprofit group. The group recently released recommendations for companies producing AI- generated images, audio and other media. "I want people to think deeply before deploying this technology" Leibowicz said. "They should play around. . . but we should also think, what purpose are these tools serving in the first place?"

While text generators like ChatGPT can make the process of writing emails and marketing documents faster and easier, they also appear to present misinformation as fact. And image generators like DALL-E are trained in copying widely available digital art and photography. This has raise copyright(版权)concerns from the creators of those works.

"It is safer to use AI tools as a ‘thought partner' but still people as the creator of final products," said Anna Gressel. She works at the law company Debevoise & Plimpton, which advises businesses on how to use AI.

(1)、Which company made creative products with Al tools' help?
    A、Instacart B、Matel C、CarMax D、Snapchat
(2)、What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A、People rely too much on technology in their daily life. B、AI tools are widely used to help businesses grow. C、AI tools have an effect on improving business conditions. D、Customers are more and more connected online.
(3)、What does the underlined word "deploying" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A、presenting confidently B、promoting successfully C、debating publicly D、applying effectively
(4)、What can we learn from Anna Gressel's words?
A、AI tools should just be humans' assistants. B、The use of AI tools should be forbidden. C、A business should partner with a law company. D、Copyright concerns are unnecessary

Some chimpanzees(黑猩猩)are much wilder when it comes to making beats, scientists have discovered. In a Ugandan rainforest, the chimps have developed their own drumming(击鼓)styles on tree roots. Researchers observed their drumming styles range from rock to jazz. One chimpanzee brought back the style of the late John Bonham, a drummer who played a piece of music, Whole Lotta Love, and is ranked as one of the best. "The chimpanzee makes very fast drums with many evenly separated beats. His drumming is so fast that you can hardly see his hands." said Catherine, leading scientist of the study.

Drumming with feet and hands with their special calls is used to exchange messages through thick forests, even with miles between them. Ben the Alpha's call was a close two quick beats and a distant third, sometimes fourth.

Catherine also said. "We could often recognize which chimpanzee was drumming, and it was a fantastic way to find the different ones we were looking for. So if we could recognize, we were sure they could."

The team was surprised to note the chimpanzees only used their personalized drumming styles when on the move, showing that the chimpanzees could decide whether to be recognized or not. The research could also settle a problem about why these chimpanzees greet each other when they meet but are not observed to say goodbye when they part in the forest. "The chimpanzees don't need to say goodbye because they're effectively able to keep in touch." Catherine said. These long-distance signals give the chimpanzees a way to recognize with each other.

The researchers' next study will be to explore whether different drumming styles can lead to different drumming cultures among the different chimpanzee populations.

(1)、What do we know about the chimpanzees in the first paragraph?
A、Their drumming styles are too fast to discover. B、Their own drumming styles have been formed. C、Their wild drumming styles are ranked as the best. D、Their drumming styles are in various music forms.
(2)、How do the male chimpanzees communicate through thick forests?
A、By performing different styles of calling. B、By beating the drum quickly on tree roots. C、By combining drumming and special calls. D、By using their personalized drumming styles.
(3)、Why is it unnecessary for these chimpanzees to say goodbye?
A、Because they don't want to be recognized. B、Because they don't want to see each other. C、Because they are on the move all the time. D、Because they have their own way to contact.
(4)、Which can be the best title for the text?
A、The Chimps—singers in their special voices B、The Chimps—drummers in personalized styles C、The Chimps interested in making musical beats D、The Chimps delighted in performing with hands

It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year's use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters' wear. I didn't really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.

I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn't afford a coat but could get my old one.

My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don't really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover," Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.

(1)、Which word can best describe the author's daughter?
    A、Thoughtful. B、Wealthy. C、Easy-going. D、Hard-working.
(2)、Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet?
A、It cost too much. B、It was looking dirty. C、It was not sent to someone in need. D、There was not enough room for his new coat.
(3)、What is the author's decision after his second coat becomes old?
A、Telling his daughter. B、Buying a new one soon. C、Sending something else to charity. D、Donating it to charity.
(4)、What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A、Love is the key to joy. B、Giving fills our wants. C、The more you give, the more you lose. D、A coat is large enough to cover our wants

Poor Bobby was getting cold sitting out in the backyard in the snow. With only one dime (10美分硬币) in hand, he could not come up with an idea for his mother's birthday gift. Ever since his father had passed away, the family of five had struggled. Although the family was short of money, they had love and family unity(团结).

Bobby had three sisters, all of whom had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby kicked the snow and started to walk down to the street where the stores opened. Anyway, he wanted to try his luck.

Bringing together all his courage, he walked into the first store he saw. His heart quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime. Finally he saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his dime. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder gently and said, "You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you." Then the shop owner left. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid. After a little while, the shop owner came out with a bunch of red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver bow.

The giant panda's special black-and-white fur makes it one of the most recognizable animals on the planet. But why does it have this unique coloring? To hide from natural enemies, both in the snow and in the shadows, study lead author Tim Caro, a professor in the UC (University of California) Davis Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology, said in a new statement. Moreover, the large black circles around a panda's eyes may help other pandas recognize it, the researchers said.

Understanding why the giant panda has such noticeable color has been a long-term problem to solve. To find out the answer, Caro and his colleagues looked at photos of pandas and 195 other carnivore (食肉动物) species, including 39 subspecies of bears. Then, they recorded the coloring on each area of those animals' bodies, and compared them with areas of the panda's body. "Compared with the previous studies, the breakthrough in this study was treating each part of the body as an independent area," Caro said.

The research team tried to figure out the purpose of the dark-colored furry areas. After going through many comparisons, the researchers determined that the white parts of the giant panda help it hide in the snow. In contrast, its black arms and legs help it hide in the shadows, they said. The panda's white-and-black coloring didn't appear to be related to temperature regulation. Nor did they find evidence that the dark circles around a panda's eyes helped to make them look cuter.

"This really was a great effort by our team, finding and scoring thousands of images and scoring more than 10 areas per picture from over 20 possible colors," study co-author Ted Stankowich, an assistant professor of bi ology at California State University, Long Beach, said in the statement. "Sometimes it takes hundreds of hours of hard work to answer the simplest question: Why is the panda black and white?"

(1)、Why did Caro study the photos of pandas and 195 other carnivore species?
A、To record the number of photos. B、To research more carnivore species. C、To figure out the reason behind pandas' special color. D、To compare the difference between pandas and other carnivore species.
(2)、What study method did the researchers use to draw the conclusion?
A、Doing experiments. B、Making comparisons. C、Scoring pandas' behavior in nature. D、Observing pandas in the wild.
(3)、What can we learn about pandas' unique coloring?
A、The white and black parts help pandas to hide. B、The function of the dark-colored areas is unknown. C、The white-and-black coloring will change with temperature. D、The dark circles around pandas' eyes help make them look cuter.
(4)、What can be inferred from Ted Stankowich's words?
A、The study is a great success. B、Hundreds of hours of hard work is not worthwhile. C、It needs efforts to find the truth behind simple questions. D、Simple issues shouldn't take scientists so much time to study.

Children at boarding school get the best night's sleep because of strict lights out time, according to a recent study, which was presented at Sleep Down Under, the 33rd yearly scientific meeting of the Australasian Sleep Association. Professor Kurt Lushington, a psychologist who led the study; said, "It is a naturalistic experiment showing the key to good sleep in teenagers is quite simple: a good timetable and no mobile devices(设备) at night."

Over the past 20 years, the time children spend sleeping has fallen and only half regularly get more than seven hours. The recommended amount is eight to ten. The biggest problems are smartphones and tablets (平板电脑) whose blue light wakes the brain, making it harder to drop off.

An Australian team compared sleep patterns of 15 to 18-year-olds at a school in Adelaide. The 59 boarders had to leave their phones in a kitchen area or on their desk before bed and turn their lights out by a set time. They slept for an average 8 hour 26 minutes a night compared with 7 hours 46 minutes for day pupils.

Lack of sleep affects mental health and school performance and causes behavioral problems. It has also been connected with the child obesity epidemic and other diseases. This year an American study found that teenagers who didn't get enough sleep took in extra sugar during a school year. They ate sweets, cakes, chocolate and biscuits and drank fizzy drinks to promote their energy levels.

Lushington recommends that parents reach agreement on not using a phone. This is most likely to work if they do likewise and offer other enjoyments, such as books. "I think if you put these rules in place, kids will go along with them," he told New Scientist.

(1)、What is the secret to teenagers' good sleep according to Paragraph 1?
A、Strict lights out time. B、More physical exercise at school. C、Good bedtime plan and more playtime. D、Regular schedule and no mobile devices.
(2)、What does the underlined phrase "drop off" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A、Fall asleep. B、Fall behind. C、Give up. D、Calm down.
(3)、What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A、Bad examples of school performance. B、Bad effects connected with lack of sleep. C、Behavioral problems caused by bad eating habits. D、The relationship between school performance and sleep.
    (4)、What does Lushington suggest?
A、Teachers leaving less homework. B、Students choosing proper sleep patterns C、Parents as well as children not using phones. D、Parents sending their children to boarding schools.

I've lived in Cardigan Bay(卡迪根海湾) in West Wales since I was a few months old. You've got everything you need here. Hills, stunning beaches, nice coastal paths. As someone who loves the countryside, I've never wanted to leave.

I was lucky to find work I could do in this area. A lot of people do have to move away in order to find work. I started Adventure Beyond here about 30 years ago and we work all over the UK. We go up to Scotland, we work along the Thames. We've also taken groups to Canada, the Himalayas, places like that. But honestly, West Wales has got everything. We can do everything we need right here.

Cardigan Bay is pretty huge, but I find having grown up here there's a definite sense of belonging. There's an awareness that we're lucky to have these incredible sandy beaches, pebbly beaches, beautiful rivers, and hills. It's peaceful, and it's not overdeveloped. Of course, there are periods when it gets busy, but then the second schools go back and you pretty much get the beaches to yourself. There is a sense of community (群体) too, with a lot of good community-based clubs, such as the Poppit Sands Surf Lifesaving Club.

I set up Adventure Beyond to make my own work in the area. I love the outdoors, and I wanted to be in Cardigan Bay, so it was perfect. I've tried to always keep that personal touch. The clients(客户) will pretty much always meet myself and all the staff. We took a lot of people on through the Kickstart scheme(启动计划) and they've been employed with us for a few years. A lot of our clients have been with us since we started, too. There's a sense of family, which is quite special.

I won't mention a specific favorite place, but in general the beaches are just amazing. It's just a sort of wild west, really.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, "I don't have any special skills to share."

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" She grinned, "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here." Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

"You two? The talent show for the food bank?" My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. "A big occasion." Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. "Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match." Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
