Fast food chains have tried for years to appeal to customers who care about their health. They have added lighter food to their menus, such as salads and yogurt. Of course, the lighter food goes with the usual burgers, fried chicken and shakes. 

Menus have changed over the past three decades. According to a recent study, fast food menus are less healthy than they were 30 years ago. The study suggests the problem is getting worse. The fat, salt content and size of fast food meals are the problem. They are often the reason for the rising obesity (肥胖) rate among adults in the United States. The researchers found that the average main dish weighed more in 2016 than in 1986. It also had more calories and more sodium (钠). One expert said, "The restaurants have not done enough. The big picture is that there have been some positive changes, but they are small. Overall, the changes have gotten worse. " 

The average fast food dessert had more calories in 2016. It also weighed more than the average fast food dessert thirty years earlier. Restaurants are counting on bigger sundaes and cookies to increase the amount spent on each order. For example, McDonald's recently introduced "donut sticks" dusted with sugar. Six sticks have 280 calories. But you can also order 12 sticks for less than the cost of two single orders. 

The researchers found that, over the 30 years, there were more calories in items like chips, soup, and French fries. Sodium content rose even though portion(一份) size did not grow much. When consumed together as a single meal, the study found that the average main dish and side order account for nearly 40 percent of a 2000-calory daily diet. 

Inside а tiny shop in Manchester, Adam Birce carefully carves at а woodblock. He looks carefully at each piece to ensure they fit and match before gently setting them together. Adam Birce, the owner of Four Strings, restores stringed instruments like violins, and his passion is restoring and appreciating what has already been crafted and loved. 

Birce started playing the violin in grade school and grew to truly appreciate it. He played semiprofessionally out of high school and later got his degree in music at Virginia Commonwealth University as a violinist. After graduating, he landed a job selling violins. "As fate would have it, I was asked by my employer to learn to fix violins 15 years ago," he says. "I soon moved off on my own to do restoration. " Since 2014, he has been on a mission with Four Strings to offer excellent fine-instrument restoration services to the community. 

Violin restoration isn't a self-taught skill. Each summer for the past decade, Birce has traveled to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for up to two weeks to study under famous violin restoration expert Hans J. Nebel. Here, students learn everything from delicate edging repair to violin identification. "A lot of the work itself is learning as you go," Birce says. "It's a lot of problem-solving and critical thinking, like coming up with a woodworking plan. 

"How long а job takes varies. Most are about 3-6 months for major work, unless a full top-to-bottom restoration is needed, which can take even longer," Birce explains. "I leave that up to the client if they want to commit to that. " One of his longest jobs was working on a Scottish violin from the early 1800s that had been water-damaged. "I had to use every skill in my toolbox to fix it," Birce laughingly recalls. "It was a very onerous job. "

 If there's one thing to be learned from Birce's passion, it's that each violin is unique in its own right. He compares the fine instruments market to the fine arts market. "A lot of these instruments are fine art," he says. "I kind of say this is a Picasso I'm playing or a Degas. I've worked on a few, which is always a joy. "

It's always exciting to receive a letter in the mail. Even today, when the world is digitally connected, receiving an actual letter in your mailbox from a distant land is a great way for children to make new friends. 

The Peaceful Pen Pals Project is a beautiful initiative that combines global connection and self-expression. The project is part of the nonprofit Kids for Peace, founded by Jill McManigal and Danielle Gram in California, in 2006. Letter writing is most certainly hands-on and helps strengthen relationships throughout the world. 

The Peaceful Pen Pals Project is open to all children, ages 2 through 17. To date, there are 1500 children from 17 countries participating in the program. Each child is assigned a pen pal of a similar age. This establishes a point of connection right off the bat for the children and promotes a stronger bond. If the letter writers are in the same grade, they can chat about their schools, teachers, and what they are studying. They can also compare and contrast what different states or countries learn about and how the dynamics of the classroom are, whether socially or academically. 

Children may be more inclined to write about their issues if they feel like they are speaking to a peer in a similar situation. They also write about the local weather, who the letter writer lives with, and their favorite things to do at home. This will give the pen pal a good sense of the writer's home life, and they may relate to certain aspects, such as their parents, the number of siblings, or if they share a room. Although pen pals may live in different countries, they may find common ground according to this information. 

"Hearing first-hand stories from an international pen pal can encourage teens to take someone else's perspective and to think outside of themselves," writes Rebecca Fraser-Thill on Very Well Family. "It can also encourage interest in geography, politics, and history, and promote many key skills, including reciprocation, empathy and mutual concern. "

ChatGPT, launched in November, 2022, has attracted over 100 million monthly users in just two months, which is considered the fastest-growing consumer app.  

ChatGPT can write emails, computer code, even academic papers and poems.  . With various functions, it is suspected to do no good to multiple areas, above all the higher education. 

So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble?  . Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt more students to cheat, especially in exams. By comparison, others regard it as a blessing rather than a curse. Andreas Schleicher, director of education and skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because "it gives people a chance" to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well. 

 , one-third of the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while the rest supported students having access to it. The attitude of most students sees a distinct difference. They admitted having sought help from ChatGPT to complete their homework. 

As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks.  .

Few items make more of a fashion statement than wearing feathers. In Europe the trend first came to prominence(引人注目) during the 16^th century Renaissance (文艺复兴) period, symbolizing wealth and power. Similarly, nowadays, the feather industry is seen as an expensive decoration for designer items, including handbags and boots.

However, the Native American culture falls on the opposite end, viewing feathers as sacred parts of their civilization.

Native American is the blanket item for a member of any of the local people of North, Central and South America, many of whom were wiped out by diseases brought over by European colonists. Today, their traditional culture survives to an extent in specific Native American Reserves around the US and Canada, aiming to protect the remaining tribes.

Though each tribe has its own culture, feathers are widely seen as a symbol of bravery and are often integrated into the iconic headdress or warbonnet(战冠) designs worm by the most influential and powerful members of a tribe.

As a key symbol for a tribe, a warbonnet should reflect a tribe's home. As such, they are usually made up of feathers mainly from the local area, which results in widely differing designs around the US.

Of these feathers, an eagle feather is the most highly valued. Within the Native American culture, eagles are regarded for their strength and bravery, meaning anyone who possesses or wears its feathers should also demonstrate these qualities.

Despite this spiritual significance, many not associated with the culture continue to wear headdresses with artificial feathers at music festivals and sporting events. Dennis Zotigh, Cultural Specialist, National Museum of the American Indian, said: "This is analogous to casually wearing a purple heart (a US military medal for bravery) that was not earned."

Indeed, the feather is such a meaningful and spiritual part of Native American culture. So maybe the next time we find ourselves buying a shirt with a feather design or colorful feather earrings, we can appreciate the feather's symbolic history.

When Kurt Benirschke, a researcher at the University of California San Diego, started collecting skin samples from rare and endangered animals in 1972, he didn't have a firm plan on what to do with them. A few years later, he moved his collection to San Diego Zoo, and called it the Frozen Zoo.

Benirschke passed away in 2018, but his efforts are very much alive. Today, the Frozen Zoo is the world's largest animal cryobank (冷库), with samples from over 10,500 individual animals from 1,220 species. It has reached some milestones in the field of genetics (遗传学), starting with the cloning of the first animal — a sheep named Dolly — in 1996.

Although cloning isn't perfect — an Indian ox they cloned only survived for 48 hours, it's a useful tool to help save endangered species, because it can increase genetic diversity. When the population of a species declines, the remaining animals are forced to reproduce within a closely related group, and thus the genetic pool becomes smaller, which further threatens survival. In a species of animals, the genetic diversity is what gives it flexibility, the ability to bounce back from big natural disasters, virus attacks or disease attacks. That's because if there are more different types of genetics in a species, there is a higher chance that some will survive.

With the current alarming rate of biodiversity loss, all researchers agree that a tighter cooperation between all cryobanks is a necessity. The task is enormous, because there are a million species at risk. "We need 50 different genetic samples from each, so that means 50 million samples; for each of those, we need five bottles for each sample, so that's hundreds of millions of samples that need to be stored," Ryder says.

"If we had a conversation with the future, they would say, please save as much biodiversity as you can, now. Period," he adds. "And they would say, do that by all means available."

The publication of A Christmas Carol in 1843 ensured that Charles Dickens' name would forever be linked with Christmas. However, it is more than a timeless Christmas story. It's a very Victorian story of urban circumstances: extremes of wealth and poverty, industry and inability. It helped change Victorian society, and that's why Dickens wrote it. 

Aside from raising people's awareness of the plight of the poor in Victorian England, though, Dickens was also in great need of cash to support his large family. "Thinking creatively, he wrote himself out of his predicament," says historian Catherine Golden. 

The already well-known writer's solution worked, to a degree. By the end of the next year, the book had sold more than 15,000 copies. But due to the book's relatively low price, much of that money didn't make it back to the author. "What a wonderful thing it is that such a great success should bring me such intolerable anxiety and disappointment!" Dickens wrote. 

The book did have the cultural impact Dickens was hoping for, though. The writer came from a poor family and is remembered as a friend to the poor throughout his life. In the fall of that year, the author had visited a Samuel Starey's Field School, which taught poor children. "Dickens easily empathized with children living in poverty, coming, as he did, from a poor childhood himself — a fact that set him apart from many other English authors," writes Golden. 

"Even if economics motivated Dickens to write, his story encouraged charity," writes Golden. "Like Scrooge, a character in his story, Dickens himself was a charitable man. He used his wealth and influence to help those less fortunate."

Dickens may not have gotten rich off of the publication of A Christmas Carol, but he did make the world a little richer.

It was the last day of school, and the long year spent in fourth grade had finally come to an end. It had rained heavily all day, and by the afternoon it became chilly. The sun had dipped below the horizon (地平线) as I got home soaked (湿透) and cold. I rushed into my room and slipped into some dry clothes. Once I had changed, I joined my mother in the kitchen. She had already lit the fire to prepare supper.

How to Avoid an Internet Addiction

It may seem like everyone surfs the web these days. But if you can't have interest in other aspects of your life because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you're the only one who has experienced that feeling.  Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the computer.

More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction. And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.

Set aside limited time for computer use.

Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.  If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet. 

Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.

If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a sport. This will take your mind off the computer. 

Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).

Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure that you get away from the computer when the time is up. Alternatively create a shutdown timer on your desktop. 

Now more companies are experimenting with the concept of connected clothes. Among the pioneers is London based Cute Circuit, which has been creating fashionable smart clothing since 2004. The company's latest innovation is the "Sound Shirt", which allows deaf people to "feel" live music by transforming the tunes into touch sensations (感受) in real time.

The fashionable jacket uses software that changes the music into data and wirelessly sends it to the 16-micro motors fitted inside the clothing's fabric (布料). The devices shake with the intensity (强度) of the music being played, allowing the wearer to feel each instrument individually. For example, violins can be felt on the arms, while the deeper, heavier bass notes can be felt close to the stomach. The series of touch like sensations across the wearer's body enable him or her to feel the entire music, resulting in a musical experience.

To ensure the shirt is comfortable, the designers chose to leave out wires and instead wove conductive textiles (导电纺织品) into the garment's fabric. Francesca Rosella, chief creative officer of Cute Circuit, explains, "There're no wires inside, so we're only using smart fabrics — we have a combination of micro-electronics and very thin and flexible and conductive fabrics. All these little electronic motors are connected with these conductive fabrics so that the garment is soft and stretchable."

Cute Circuit, which has been testing the Sound Shirt for three years, expects to make it available to the general public shortly. Priced at $3,673, the smart jacket won't be cheap. However, twin sisters Herman and Heredia Breanne, who lost their hearing at a young age, believe the hi-tech garment is a worthwhile investment, especially for deaf people with a passion for dancing. "It's almost like feeling the depth of the music," says Herman. "It just feels as though we can move along with it."

Given the crowds of visitors and many attractions at the Disney parks, it's easy to get lost. Thankfully, you will always find a worker to point you in the right direction. When you do, you just might start to notice something unique about their body language—and it's just one of the many secrets Disney employees won't tell you. 

Cast members, as park employees are called, are taught in their training to always point with two fingers instead of one. The first reason for this is that pointing with just the one index finger(食指), as most Americans do, is considered impolite in some cultures and countries. The Disney parks have always attracted many international visitors, so the friendlier two-finger gesture became the norm among employees, in an effort to be sensitive and welcoming to every person. Employees have even affectionately named it "the Disney point". Michaela Paris, a former Disney employee, said the Disney point is a sign of respect. 

"Disney receives plenty of foreign travelers to their parks. The typical single finger point is a symbol of disrespect and has a negative(负面的) meaning in many cultures. Therefore, Disney created 'the Disney point' to accommodate all of their guests, " Paris said. 

Other sources say this way of pointing is related to Disney himself. According to the Huffington Post, it's actually how Walt Disney himself used to point things out to visitors, because he usually had a cigarette balanced between the two fingers. You won't find cast members today smoking a cigarette—there's no smoking allowed for anyone, employees or guests, once you are inside the entrances at Disney parks—but the tradition of pointing with two fingers still stands.
