Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn't understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn't have the three extra dollars to buy it for him. It was a kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was a kind of product that wasted a parent's money and made me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, "It's just yoghurt. What's the big deal?" So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn't seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then-bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Building up your confidence not only helps feel good about yourself but also helps you leave a good impression on others. Here are some tips that may help you achieve it.
Make sure to present yourself well. Shower daily, brush your teeth, fix your hair and dress for confidence. You don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe to feel better. As long as you're clean, comfortable and feel good, you've set up for confidence!
Perfect your posture. How you carry yourself conveys a lot to others. Keep your shoulders back, your spine (脊椎) straight, and your chin high. Positioning yourself like that will make you genuinely feel in charge. And to top it off, having confident body language has been linked to lower levels of stress, too.
You will be surprised how even the smallest of smiles can disarm many a social situation and make everyone feel more comfortable. In fact, research shows that smiling reduces stress hormones in the brain. Can you imagine approaching someone who has a black look? No, thank you.
Make eye contact. Our eyes are windows to the soul, and our gaze (凝视) showcases our attention and feelings. Eye contact is a subtle change, but it can work wonders on how other people perceive you. It shows not only that you are a person worthy of communicating with, but it tells them you respect them, and acknowledge their presence.
A.Keep your smile in easy reach.
B.The same goes for your face and hands.
C.It should only be up to yourself to appear confident.
D.So don't be afraid to meet the gaze of someone else.
E.Devote a little time each day to your own personal image.
F.Other people are actually just as shy about eye contact as you are.
G.Walk with a sharp pace instead of dragging your feet and sit up straight.

A new report from the U.K. says more than 1 in 5 teens there spends five hours or more per day on social media. And the heavier users of social media get to bed later and get poorer sleep quality. The new study was based on self-reported survey data from nearly 12,000 teenage participants in the U. K.'s Millennium Cohort Study.
Megan Moreno, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says social media is too often described as either entirely good or bad, when the reality is more complicated for teens. "Social media may have its problems, but it is the way that they stay in touch with each other," she says.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study found a link between high social media usage and poor sleep patterns. Especially teens who are heavier users of social media go to sleep later. And the researchers note late bedtime is linked with poorer academic and mental health consequences.
Holly Scott, a researcher at the University of Glasgow, isn't sounding the alarm. She says, "It's easy to look at the results of this and think, 'We should just get teenagers to spend less time on social media.' I think that's an understandable response, but what I really encourage people to do is look beyond that." She says people should pay attention to the important emotional, cognitive(认知的) and social factors when teenagers are using social media.
Scott stresses that the study is pointing to a connection between social media and poor sleep, but not necessarily explaining cause and effect.
"Certainly some teens do say they struggle to get away from social media at night—they might be worried about missing out on fun, or affecting their friends by not answering messages—and they stay up late for that," she says. "As for some of those young people, they have a naturally later body clock and they are passing their free time at night on social media until they're ready to fall asleep."
(1)、What's the new study intended to do in the U.K.?A、To find the benefits of using social media. B、To know the effects of using social media. C、To promote the development of social media. D、To prove the growing popularity of social media.(2)、What's Megan Moreno's attitude towards social media?A、Positive. B、Doubtful. C、Objective. D、Confused.(3)、What does Holly Scott encourage people to do?A、Make better use of social media. B、Spend less time on social media. C、Study how social media influences teens. D、Understand why teens like using social media.(4)、In which section of a newspaper does this passage most probably appear?A、Health. B、Education. C、Science. D、Entertainment. -

With the improvement of privacy protection awareness, everyone has questions about the telephone address, ID card information and so on. This visible privacy has been particularly concerned, but for chat photos and original pictures, it has not attracted enough attention. The topic "How much privacy can a photo reveal" has been trending on Sina Weibo, sparking concern and heated discussion about privacy awareness. In group chats, some people may post their original photos. But that may give away their home address and other information.
Images often contain a lot of information and various traces left by digital cameras or photo manipulation (处理) software. This data, called Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF), is a key tool for many professionals. It can detail whether the photographer used a flash, which digital effects were applied to a picture and when the photo was taken. EXIF can also contain the precise GPS coordinates (坐标) of the location where a photo was taken, according to CNN. If you take a landscape picture from your window and send the original picture to a group chat, it means that you are releasing your location data to all strangers in the group. They may even accurately infer your house number by analyzing the shooting time and angle.
Not just in a group chat, sending an image in a text message, email, or other delivery tools will also include the accompanying information. So how do we protect our privacy when sending photos? The most effective way is to avoid sending original photos in group chats. If it's necessary, try not to tap the "original picture". However, photos sent by WeChat Moments are automatically pressed by the system, and they travel without location and other information. To solve the problem at its root, we can delete and remove a picture's EXIF data on a computer. If you are using an iOS smartphone, you can turn off location services for the camera in the privacy settings. If you're using an Android device, the settings vary. Typically, you can go to the setting menu and switch the services off for the camera, according to CTV News. There is one more thing you can do — photoshop your photos before you share them. What comes with your edited images is photos without stored location data.
(1)、What is the function of the first paragraph?A、To explain the meaning of privacy protection. B、To lead to the topic of privacy protection. C、To describe people's concern about privacy. D、To tell the readers the importance of privacy.(2)、Why is EXIF so important?A、It can be used as a flash for the photographer. B、It may apply digital effects to a picture. C、It includes the home address of the viewers. D、It provides a photo's shooting time and place.(3)、How can we protect privacy when sharing photos?A、By switching off location services for Wechat. B、By sending out their EXIF data on our phone. C、By editing the photos with photo editing apps. D、By turning off Internet connection when taking photos.(4)、What is probably the best title for the passage?A、Photo Privacy Protection B、The Importance of Protecting Photos C、The Privacy a Photo Reveals D、Getting Information from Photos -

I love my smartphone — it's my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others.
On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There's no truth in that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversations and challenges, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I'm sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
(1)、Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with ____.A、discussion topics B、the course material C、the author's class rule D、others' misuse of technology(2)、What does the underlined word "engage" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A、Accept. B、Explore. C、Change. D、Reject.(3)、According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may ____.A、affect students' concentration on course evaluations B、encourage students to have in—depth conversations C、help students to better understand complex themes D、keep students from doing independent thinking(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A、The author is quite stubborn. B、The author will give up teaching history. C、The author will change his teaching plan soon. D、The author values technology-free dialogue in his class. -

On Saturday morning, the two. boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top and enjoyed the beautiful view from the mountaintop.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down. On one very dangerous part of the mountain, Ian fell three meters off the side of the path. Jeremy climbed down to where Ian was and found him badly injured and not able to move then. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help but he did not want to leave his friend. He cleaned the dirt and blood from Ian's face and hands, and then tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian's right leg was hurting too much. With incredible calmness and his former experience in the mountain, Jeremy then gave Ian his food and water and let him lie on his jacket. They had to wait and hope that help would come. While they waited for help, Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm and they rested together. Sensing his friend's pain and anxiety, Jeremy gently comforted him and gave him constant encouragement in a determined tone.
Meanwhile, as darkness started to fall, their parents back at the campsite became very worried that the boys had not returned.
