Deepfakes are videos which have been digitally manipulated (操纵) to show people saying something  they haven' t actually spoken. In the past, videos like these could be made only by  (experience) special effects artists or video editors. Now, anyone with the right tools can make a convincing deepfake. 

These videos are easy to make and dangerous. Cases  (report) about misused deepfake technology in the past few months. So, how can we know whether what we are seeing and hearing is real? 

Wael Abd-Almageed, who leads  team of five researchers at the University of Southern California, is trying to answer that question. This team has designed computer software which can determine whether a video is a deepfake. " If there is inconsistency (不协调) in the video, such as an unnatural eye  (move), we can spot it, " he said. 

How can you avoid  (fool) by a deepfake?  Wael Abd-Almageed suggests not  (immediate) believing what you see online. Instead,  (make) sure you research a video first. " Don' t take anything on the Internet for granted, " he warns. " Ask  (you), ‘Would this person really say something like this? ' " 

Wael Abd-Almageed also advises watching a video  a slower rate so you can spot inconsistencies. This is possible by using the settings on most popular video platforms. 

My name is Maggie and I am a big red maple tree in the center of Central Park in New York. Every part of me is 1  shaped. I love seeing all the people 2  , stare at me, and say " That tree is beautiful!" Those 3  make me feel special. 

One day, I see a big storm 4  my way. I can hear all the frightening sounds nearing, but the most frightening one is the sound of almost half of my bark being torn off. I feel 5  . What will people think when they walk up to a worn-down tree in the middle of Central Park?  Will they cut me down?  This 6  makes my branches ache. 

Hours later, when the storm 7  , a nice opossum family comes to me and asks 8  they can spend the night in one of my holes. The baby opossum is so cute that I can' t 9  . Soon, round two of the storm comes. It 10  another part of my bark, but it doesn' t 11  me as much because I have a distraction: the opossum family. Other animals see my 12  act and come to me, too. Even though I feel great for 13  all the animals, I still haven' t completely forgotten about what people might think about my 14  . Beyond all expectations, people love me even more for protecting all those animals from the terrible storm. This serves as a 15  to me that " beautiful" doesn' t always refer to looks. 

Summer is the swimming season. As fun as a swimming pool can be it' s also a major safety risk if you don' t take the proper measures. Here are some tips for a safe swimming season. 

Have supervisors (监护人) to watch over the safety.  . Supervisors should be an adult who can swim well and knows how to save others in a swimming pool. They mustn' t be distracted with their cellphone, or a conversation with another adult. They must take that role very seriously.  . More children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning (溺水) than any other causes of death. 

Keep a variety of floating devices in and around the pool like a life jacket plus pool noodles or a paddle board. That helps when accidents happen.  . 

Supervisors should also learn basic CPR. It only takes three steps, which is easy to learn. However, it saves life in the " golden four minutes" right after accidents happen. 

  . Emergency department staff sometimes see serious head injuries and spinal cord injuries that come from careless diving. This happens more among teenagers and young adults. Prevent this by making sure people are only using existing diving boards that are designed to dive into deep water. 

Another risk is a condition called " dry drowning" . This happens after a near-drowning event in which water gets into someone' s lungs.  . Call 120 or go to the emergency department right away. This is very rare, but can be fatal (致命的).

The world' s most famous tire (轮胎) graveyard (坟地) of 42 million tires in the sands of Kuwait is finally being cleaned up and recycled. This news in itself would be a major relief to locals who have to suffer from the clouds of black smoke arising during fires. But the government isn' t stopping there. They are aiming to create a green city of 25, 000 homes in line with a post-oil Persian Gulf, with a focus on sustainability and tourism. 

The first step is to clear the ground. The Salmiya area, nicknamed " Rubber (橡胶) Mountain" , is formed from hundreds of small mountains of spent tires — a reaction from the one million cars which were added to Kuwait' s roads over the decade. 

EPSCO Global General Trading recycling company has opened a recycling plant for the tires, where they' ve been collected, sorted, cut up, and pressed into other materials like rubbery coloured flooring tiles (铺地砖). The plant opened in January of 2021, and can recycle up to 3 million tires a year. The recycled material is then exported out to nearby gulf neighbours and Asia. In the place of the tires will be South Saad Al-Abdullah City, a green city characterizing a new era in the Middle-Eastern country. 

Spent tires are a major environmental problem worldwide due to the room they take up and the chemicals they can release. 

" We have moved from a difficult stage that was characterized by great environmental risk, " says Oil Minister Mohammed al-Fares. " Today the area is becoming clean and all tires are being removed to begin the launch of the project of Saad Al-Abdullah city. " 

Expected to cost €3. 3 billion and require 30 years to complete, the city hopes to feature green technology, probably like the kind one can see in other cities on the Persian Gulf, both existing and not. Saudi Arabia is planning to build a zero-emissions, car-less future city that' s centered around access to big data rather than water or crops.
