For thousands of years, people have told fables (寓言) (teach) a lesson or to pass on wisdom. Fables were part of the oral tradition of many early cultures, and the well-known Aesop's fables date to the (six) century, B. C. Yet, the form of the fable still has values today, Rachel Carson says in "A Fable for Tomorrow. "
Carson uses a simple, direct style common to fable. In fact, her style and tone (口吻) are seemingly directed at children. "There was once a town in the heart of America, all life seemed to enjoy peaceful existence with its surroundings, " her fable begins, (borrow) some familiar words from many age-old fables. Behind the simple style, however, is a serious message (intend) for everyone.
(difference) from traditional fables, Carson's story ends with an accusation instead of a moral. She warns of the environmental dangers facing society, and she teaches that people must take responsibility saving their environment.
The themes of traditional fables often deal with simple truths about everyday life. However, Carson's theme is a more weighty (warn) about environmental destruction. Carson proves that a simple literal form that has been passed down through the ages can still (employ) today to draw attention to important truths.

Grizzly bears, which may grow to about 2.5 m long and weigh over 400 kg, occupy a conflicted corner of the American psyche — we revere (敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and their answer is often the same: a grizzly bear.
"Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former range, " says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven't been seen in a century or more, they're increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the US was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough number of 50, 000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2, 000 or more grizzly bears in the US. Their recovery has been so successful that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to delist grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.
Obviously, if precautions (预防) aren't taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away. "Our hope is to have a clean, attractant-free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits, " says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.
(1)、How do Americans look at grizzlies?A、They cause mixed feelings in people. B、They should be kept in national parks. C、They are of high scientific value. D、They are a symbol of American culture.(2)、What has helped the increase of the grizzly population?A、The European settlers' behavior. B、The expansion of bears' range. C、The protection by law since 1975. D、The support of Native Americans.(3)、What has stopped the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service from delisting grizzlies?A、The opposition of conservation groups. B、The successful comeback of grizzlies. C、The voice of the biologists. D、The local farmers' advocates.(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A、Food should be provided for grizzlies. B、People can live in harmony with grizzlies.C
D. C、A special path should be built for grizzlies. D、Technology can be introduced to protect grizzlies. -

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse — like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1, 600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
"Ecological design" is the name John gives to what he does. "Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor, " he says. "You put organisms in new relationships and observe what's happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair. "
(1)、What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?A、He was fond of traveling. B、He enjoyed being alone. C、He had an inquiring mind. D、He longed to be a doctor.(2)、Why did John put the sludge into the tanks?A、To feed the animals. B、To build an ecosystem. C、To protect the plants. D、To test the eco-machine.(3)、What is the author's purpose in mentioning Fuzhou?A、To review John's research plans. B、To show an application of John's idea. C、To compare John's different jobs. D、To erase doubts about John's invention.(4)、What is the basis for John's work?A、Nature can repair itself. B、Organisms need water to survive. C、Life on Earth is diverse. D、Most tiny creatures live in groups. -

Adding game-like elements to non-game activities is part of app design. Streaks (计数器) encourage users to log into products each day. Medals reward them for completing tasks. Leaderboards add the spice of competition.
Such features can help others stay motivated while achieving a goal they find difficult to stick to. When Duolingo, a language-learning app, went public in 2021, it was clear that game-like features play a crucial role in keeping its users engaged.
But as You've Been Played, a new book by a game designer Adrian Hon notes, firms should be very careful about how they gamify experiences. If getting gamification wrong, you can annoy both customers and employees.
For customers, the obvious dangers — annoying people with constant notices about streaks, or discouraging them by showing how low down a leaderboard they sit — are not the only ones. Somtimes, some activities surely need added "fun". For instance, apps designed to encourage people to save money can happily use gamified features like money jars to track progress. However, some activities really don't need added "fun". One reading app offers to unlock animations (动画) if users hit certain reading landmarks; if you present reading as time-consuming, you are telling readers they are suffering.
For employees, turning repetitive work into video games is a technique that Amazon has reportedly used to represent workers' progress. Yet these ideas may cause negative impact. Forced rankings motivate some people while stressing others out. GitHub, an open-source coding platform, withdrew its streak feature after concerns were raised that it was pushing programmers to work every weekend.
As Mr. Hon observes, games are much less enjoyable if you have no choice over whether to participate or not. Adding fun can work, but only if it is taken seriously.
(1)、What is the author's purpose by mentioning Duolingo in Paragraph 2?A、To put an advertisement for the app. B、To illustrate how gamification helps. C、To compare different game-like elements. D、To invite more customers to learn languages.(2)、What are the customers upset with?A、The pressure of overwork. B、The brief delay of progress. C、The awful waste of money. D、Endless bothering ringtones.(3)、Why does Github cancel its streak feature?A、It runs out of employees' patience. B、It adds stress and unnecessary work. C、It gets employees addicted to fun games. D、It causes conflicts between programmers.(4)、What is Adrian Hon's attitude towards gamification?A、Doubtful. B、Critical. C、Objective. D、Supportive. -

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called "zoo pharmacognosy" or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other's fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
(1)、Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?A、They are trying to cure diseases. B、They would like to digest what they eat. C、They feel like occupying the land. D、They are attracting companions' attention.(2)、What do researchers find through camera-traps?A、Many animals copy monkeys' behaviors. B、Animals can help each other clean the fur. C、The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys. D、Resin can be used as medicine for some animals(3)、What does the underlined word "magnitude" in paragraph 4 probably mean?A、Populations. B、Characteristics. C、Similarities. D、Flexibilities.(4)、What is the possible significance of the discovery?A、Promoting evolution of creatures. B、Increasing the production of resin. C、Contributing to forest conservation. D、Motivating the study of monkeys' diet. -

FORT WORTH, Texas — If 14-year-old Ruhani Ahluwalia had her way, her days would be filled with time to let her curiosity run free. How can a doctor attack cancer with medicines that don't damage the patient? How can an artist touch a person with a hidden message in an oil painting? This is Ruhani's world — where the pursuit of learning leads to more learning for a self-described Renaissance teenager, who is multi-talented and has interests.
Since age 11, she has been working summers in a lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center researching cancer cells. She is testing drugs that can kill cancer cells while limiting the side effects on healthy cells. It's a special mission guided by the heart because she lost a great aunt to leukemia (白血病) when she was in the sixth grade.
"What really damaged her eventually was the treatment and the side effects of it, which kills both cancer and normal cells. " Ruhani explained. Due to this, Ruhani started her cancer research. "I wanted to find a better way to target cancer cells. "
During the summer between sixth and seventh grade, Ruhani began research in the study of cancer with the help of her mother, Parmeet Jodhka, a microbiology professor, who taught her daughter the necessary biology. Working from about 10 a. m. to 3 p. m. in the lab, she has finally presented her findings at multiple science fairs. Her list of accomplishments is five pages long and includes placing third in Brazil's science fair, MOSTRATEC, for her breast cancer research.
"I like learning, " she said, "There is a difference between learning and studying. Studying, you are too stuck in finishing it and in turning it in. Learning, you are doing more for yourself. "

"Number 7. Jobie Nymble, takes the lead. " Aquino cried the announcer. "Just one more hurdle (跨栏) and—"
Cheers erupted.
"Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls'100-meter hurdles!" The crowd went wild as Jobie's teammates shouted. "Way to go, Sweet Jobie?" they yelled.
"County championships, here we come, " spoke excitedly Jobie, patting her worn neon-green track spikes (钉鞋). They were bursting at the seams (接缝), but she didn't care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. "Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold, " Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
"Don't forget, guys, " said Marisol, one of her teammates. "My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park. " "Beep. Party recorded in calendar, " joked Jobie in her best robot voice.
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough, Jobie brimmed with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before.
The day of Marisol's party Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her swishy blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. "Perfect. " She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do a couple of sprints (短靴). Even at that end of the park, music and the smell of grilled food filled the air.
"Sweet Jobie!" Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. "Come on, " they shouted. "You have to try the slide. Jobie's eyes darted toward the party area. " "Slide? What sli—" Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable (充气的) slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Jobie chucked (抛出) her spikes and ran toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time. She plopped down, hurried to the edge, and closed her eyes as she let go. "Woo-hoo!" Jobie couldn't get enough. She conquered the slide again and again.

In today's rapidly urbanising China, fewer and fewer people live in skywell dwellings, a revival of interest in traditional Chinese architecture is leading some of historic buildings with skywells (restore) for modem times. Meanwhile, some architects are drawing (inspire) from skywells to help keep new buildings cooler, which is a method (combine) design and technology to cool a building without the use of power.
However, there are some (challenge) for bringing skywells into modern designs. The mechanisms of courtyards facilitating natural lighting, ventilation (通风) and rain collection are well known, but applying these principles (need) to be site-specific. After taking a personality test and seeing our results, we can gain a better understanding of all the different perceptions and reactions that others might have to the same situation. . No personality type is "better" than any other — just different. Each perspective brings something new and interesting to the table.
Identify our likes and dislikes
Maybe we've always hated talking on the phone but never really understood why. . By using personality tests like the MBTI, we can learn more about where we lie on the extroversion/introversion and thinking/feeling continuum (连续性). This helps us better understand why we prefer certain things and dislike others.
.
Learning more about our personality type can also help us discover new ways to approach challenges. Knowing what might work best for our personality type can give us new ideas on how to solve problems, deal with stress, cope with conflict, and manage our work habits.
Recognize our strengths and weaknesses
Knowing what we are good at can be important in a wide variety of situations, whether we are picking a college major or thinking about running for a seat on our local school board. For example, if we know that we are an ISTJ (introverted, sensing, thinking, and judging) on the MBTI, we might recognize that certain aspects of our personality might qualify as strengths in some situations and weaknesses in others. , it can sometimes trip us up in situations where we need to let other people take control.
A. Hold on to ideas about who we are
B. Know which situations are ideal for us
C. Here's an overview of the many benefits of personality tests
D. While they reveal truth that showcases different aspects of personality
E. While our organizational skills and carefulness can be a major strength in our work
F. This is important because we all have different ways of seeing and interacting with the world
G. Or perhaps we've always needed much time to think about a problem before making a decision

In recent years, scientists have discovered that mushrooms are much more than just a tasty addition to your favorite dish. In fact, they are the "Internet of trees" — a vast network of underground mycorrhizal (菌根的) fungi (真菌) that connects trees and other plants in a similar way to how the Internet connects people.
The mycorrhizal network is made up of hyphae (菌丝), which connect the roots of different plants and trees. These hyphae act like an underground internet, allowing plants to exchange nutrients, water, and even hormones (激素). For example, if one tree is under stress due to drought or disease, it can send out hormones to warn other nearby trees of the danger. The other trees can then prepare themselves for the coming threat.
Human beings can help trees and mushrooms by practicing "mycorestoration" in regenerative projects. With the Global Tree Initiative working towards reforestation and preserving natural habitats, it is important to share how mycorestoration can supply innovative ways to mitigate the impact of human activities.
Fungi are natural decomposers (分解器) that break down complex organic matter, like dead trees, into simpler compounds that can be absorbed by plants. This decomposition process is crucial for the health of our forests, as it contributes to nutrient cycling, soil formation, and carbon sequestration. By introducing native fungi species into areas where deforestation has occurred, we can help regenerate soil and support the growth of new trees. Fungi form symbiotic (共生的) relationships with tree roots, improving their ability to absorb water and nutrients. This increased access to resources accelerates tree growth and improves their resilience to stress, such as drought or disease.
Fostering sustainable communities through mycorestoration can be conducted through global partnerships that promote ecology within Ecovillage Design Education. The Global Ecovillage Network's presence in five continents and in over 8, 000 communities around the planet, helps the regenerative approach to community building and preservation of existing forests. By promoting sustainable land management practices and reducing our reliance on extractive industries, ecovillages can help prevent deforestation and protect the habitats of countless plant and animal species.

Before humans stored memories as zeroes und ones, we turned to digital devices of another kind — preserving knowledge on the surface of fingers and palms.
When Mogao Caves was uncovered in 1900, an aging drawing was lifted from a trove of religious manuscripts. The drawing illustrates a mnemonic (助记符号) system, a way of projecting knowledge onto the hands so it can be studied, memorized, and stored in a pocket. Around the same time this mnemonic was made, a monk named Bede halfway around the world was developing a different system of manual knowledge. These two systems are perhaps the earliest examples of manual mnemonics.
Beginning roughly twelve hundred years ago, we started using the hand itself as a portable (便携的) place of knowledge, a place to store whatever tended to slip our mental grasp. The hand became an all-purpose memory machine.
In different times and places, hands provided mnemonic maps of sound. As early as the thirteenth century, Chinese scholars were projecting syllable charts (音节图表) onto the palms and fingers. The so-called "Guidonian hand" owes its name to the eleventh-century Italian music teacher, Guido d'Arezzo. Arranging the different pitches in a scale onto the joints, he developed this technique to help students learn "unheard melody most easily and correctly". Other thinkers in Europe, perhaps inspired by Guido, developed systems for learning the sounds of language.
Then questions arise. First, what makes the hand so popular as a mnemonic prop? A large part of the answer, surely, involves portability. The hands are always, well, ready to hand. A further advantage stems from how hand mnemonics offer both visual and kinesthetic (动觉的) routes to memory: They are both seen and felt.
It's also hard to determine when and why hand mnemonics faded out. Hand mnemonics are still used to teach the "right-hand rule" in physics classrooms and remain especially popular in medicine. Today we increasingly store our "thoughts" in virtual realms (领域), but we sometimes still reach for that original "digital" repository (存储库) in our pockets.
