Let's be friends!
If you feel that making friends as an adult isn't as easy as it used to be, you're right. Though it becomes increasingly difficult, healthy friendships make a difference in our life. They can help us age better, deal with stress and live longer lives.
Be optimistic
In a 2022 study, researchers found that people who received an unexpected communication, such as a small gift felt more grateful than the senders thought. Not surprisingly, a positive attitude can help us make friends. If we think we're going to be liked, we will become more likable.
"Write down the names of three to five people you know but would like to be closer to," suggest experts. Then reach out to each of them: Send a text message, a shared photo, or an article that make you think of them. See if a small action might make a deeper connection.
Branch out
Nobody gives you all you need. Just a few good mates can make all the difference. A 2020 Study found that those with three to five close friends had higher levels of satisfaction with life.
Practice
After the pandemic (疫情), many of us forgot how to socialize. In a 2022 study, participants were required to talk to strangers every day for a week. And what do you know? In the end, people were less worried and more confident.
A. Make a list
B. Send messages
C. Friendships don't just happen.
D. Don't limit yourself to one close friend.
E. Social skills are like muscles—we can work them.
F. Here are tips for making and deepening friendships.
G. But most of the time we don't realize how much people like us.

Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
"It's not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school," said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. "Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance," she said. "Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success." Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to Mac Cann.
However, Mac Cann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) those students. Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. "Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external professionals," she said. "Increasing skills for everyone not just those with low EI would benefit everyone."
(1)、What can we learn from MacCann's study?A、Only students in middle school and high school participated in it. B、EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages. C、Students with lower EI tended to get higher grades. D、EI is also influenced by intelligence and personality factors.(2)、What is not a reason for the conclusion of MacCann's study?A、High-EI students are capable of controlling negative emotions. B、High-EI students are more likely to develop social relationships. C、High-EI students can easily focus on their study. D、High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.(3)、What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?A、Equipping teachers with emotional skills. B、Introducing a new curriculum. C、Developing special programs for students with low EI. D、Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Should EI be taught in school? B、How can students develop high EI? C、Students with high EI do better in school D、Good students do better in managing emotions -

Atmospheric (大气层的) rivers are long and narrow bands of water vapor (水蒸气) in Earth's atmosphere, which are called "large rivers in the sky". These rivers form over warm ocean waters. They are huge. They can be 930 miles long and one-third that wide.
Like real rivers, they carry huge amounts of water. These large streams of small water drops are blown by wind over land. When that happens, the water vapor cools down and condenses (凝结). Atmospheric rivers can be good. They bring water to dry areas. However, they can cause huge, fast-moving storms. Some cause snowfalls that bury towns. They are also the main cause of floods on the U.S. West Coast.
Atmospheric rivers are hard to predict. But scientists are working to change that. Marty Ralph, a scientist who works at the University of California, directs the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). They created the first computer model to predict atmospheric rivers on the U.S. West Coast. This model uses a program that runs on a computer to create a model of a real-world event. CW3E also studies atmospheric rivers using planes. Pilots drop instruments into atmospheric rivers to collect information like temperature and wind speed, which helps with forecasting.
Will climate change affect atmospheric rivers? Climate change happens naturally over a long period of time. But today, it is largely caused by human activities and is causing the Earth to warm, which affects atmospheric rivers.
Atmospheric rivers are pushed by the wind. Those winds are driven by the temperature differences between the poles and the equator (赤道). But the poles are also warming faster than areas near the equator. That makes the temperature difference between the areas smaller. This can make winds weaker.
Climate change might not cause more atmospheric rivers. But there may be very, very wet seasons and very, very dry seasons. Such a seesaw in rainfall could make it harder to manage what water there is.
(1)、What can we learn about atmospheric rivers?A、They can be 930 miles long and 465 miles wide. B、They are easy to predict as scientists are working on it. C、They are bands of water vapor forming over warm ocean waters. D、They are the main cause of floods in theU.S.(2)、What is the third paragraph mainly about?A、Why it is hard to predict atmospheric rivers. B、Whether scientists can predict atmospheric rivers. C、How technology helps the prediction of atmospheric rivers. D、How scientists are working on the forecasts of atmospheric rivers.(3)、What does the underlined word "seesaw" mean in the last paragraph?A、Growth. B、Drop. C、Prediction. D、Change.(4)、Where is the text probably taken from?A、A textbook. B、A science magazine. C、An academic article. D、A news report. -

Growing up, I understood one thing about my dad: He knew everything. In my teen years, he taught me things I'd need to know to survive in the real world. How to drive a stick shift. How to check your car tyre's pressure. The correct knife to use to cut a cantaloupe.
When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when something broke in my apartment and I needed to know how to fix it: the toilet, the air-conditioning, the wall, once, when I threw a shoe at a terrifying spider.
But then, eventually, I needed him less. I got married, and my husband had most of the knowledge I lacked about gutter cleaning and water heaters and nondestructive insect removal. For everything else, we had Google. I don't know when it happened, but our conversations when I called turn into six words. Me: "Hi, Dad." Him: "Hi, sweets. Here's Mom."
I loved my dad, of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know. Maybe I'd heard all his stories. Maybe, after knowing a man for 40 years, there's nothing left to say. Then, two summers ago, my husband, our four kids and I moved in with my parents for three weeks while our house was being painted. They owned a lake house, and my dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead (舱壁). It was hard, manual job. We got wet and sandy. But as we put the new bulkhead together piece by piece, my dad knew exactly what went where, I looked at him. "How do you know how to build a bulkhead?" "I spent a summer in college building them on the Jersey Shore.
"You did?" I thought I knew everything about my dad, but I never knew this. I realized that maybe it's not that there's nothing left to say. Maybe it's just that I've spent my life asking him the wrong questions. That day, my dad talked about what he had learned and what he could do excitedly. We chatted and chatted for a long time.
A few weeks later, after my family and I moved back into our painted house, I called my parents. "Hi, sweets," he said. "Here's Mom." "Wait, Dad," I said. "How are you?" We ended up talking about everything he was working on. To anyone else, it would sound like a normal conversation between a dad and his daughter. But to me, it was novel. A new beginning. I spent the first part of my life needing to talk to my dad. Now I talk to him because I want to.
(1)、Why did I use to feel that I needed to call my dad?A、I called to make sure he was pleased. B、I wanted to talk to him for knowledge. C、I knew my parents missed me so much. D、I was asked to call them once a week.(2)、Why hadn't I got something to talk with father before I moved back to be with him?A、My father was old and he didn't keep up with the world. B、My father always thought he was right in everything. C、I didn't have more to learn from him than I thought. D、I spent my younger ages asking him too many questions.(3)、What does the quotation "Hi, sweet. Here's Mom" mean?A、Your mother is just here beside me. B、Your mother knows what has happened. C、I will give the phone to your mother. D、I find your mother sweet and kind.(4)、What's the best title of the passage?A、Parents as friends B、Parents as helper C、Parents as savior D、Parents as advisor -

Resolving (解决) Conflict in Friendships Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. That's because there isn't enough depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don't go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning, it's a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨). I've found I need a short cool down period so that I don't act in anger. Whatever you do, don't let things ride for too long.
Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive. Yet it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.
Initiate resolution. Even when you think the other person is wrong,it's not a bad thing to say "I'm sorry if I offended you in that way." If you're honest and genuine in delivering your words, there's a good chance your friend will respond positively.
Most importantly, be loving in what you do. Try to focus on peacefully resolving the disagreement. It is not a most pleasant task to resolve conflict in any friendship.
A. Don't expect too much.
B. Try to see the other person's perspective.
C. Be the first person in a fight to say sorry for your part.
D. Many shallow friendships end up being ruined after an argument.
E. To say sorry bravely when a conflict breaks out is a better resolution.
F. However, it is worth the efforts because it results in a deeper friendship.
G. For some, counting to one hundred before saying anything may be an option.

Perhaps you know them as "taters", "spuds", or "Kennebees", or as "chips", "Idahoes", or even "shoestrings". No matter, a potato by any other name is still a potato — the world's most widely grown vegetable. As a matter of fact, if you are an average potato eater, you will put away at least 100 pounds of them each year.
That's only a tiny amount grown every year, however. Worldwide, the annual potato harvest is over 6 billion bags. Each bag contains 100 pounds of potatoes, some of them as large as four pounds each. Here in the United States, farmers fill about 400 million bags a year. That may seem like a lot of "taters", but it leaves the United States a distant third among world potato growers. Polish farmers dig up just over 800 million bags a year, while the Russians lead the world with nearly 1.5 billion bags.
People eat potatoes in many ways-baked, mashed, and roasted, to name just three. However, in the United States most potatoes are devoured in the form of French fries. One fast-food chain alone sells more than $1 billion worth of fries each year. No wonder, then, that the company pays particular attention to the way its fries are prepared.
Before any fry makes it to the people who eat at these popular restaurants, it must pass many separate tests. Fail any one of these tests and the potato is rejected. For example, only Russet Burbank potatoes are used. These Idaho potatoes have less water content than other kinds, which can have as much as 80 percent water. Once cut into "shoestrings" shapes, the potatoes are partly fried in a secret blend of oils, sprayed with liquid sugar to brown them, steam dried at high heat, then flash frozen for shipment to individual restaurants.
So, now that you realize the enormous size and value of the potato crop, you can understand why most people agree that this part of the food industry is no "small potatoes".
(1)、What can we learn from the passage about potato?A、One potato can weigh 4 pounds. B、Taters don't belong to the category of potato. C、Potato lovers eat 100 pounds of potato every day. D、Polish farmers harvest the most potatoes in the world.(2)、What does the underlined word "devoured" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、consumed B、planted C、produced D、harvested(3)、How does paragraph 4 mainly develop?A、By making comparison. B、By listing figures. C、By providing examples. D、By following the order of space.(4)、What's the main idea of the passage?A、Potatoes are disliked by many people. B、Potatoes have experienced many changes. C、Potatoes have been made into different food. D、Potatoes are small, but the industry is large.
