How to Save Humanity from Extinction
Modern humans have only existed for a relatively brief amount of time, and probably we'd like to stick around a lot longer. For example, if we want to reach our
500.000th birthday as a species, what should we focus on? .
•
The Earth's climate has changed and shifted for millions of years. There have been times in the past when it's been hotter than it is today, and times when it's been cooler. But there is something different about the past century. As far as we can tell from the geologic record, there has been no time in Earth's entire history when the climate has warmed so much in such a short amount of time. . While climate change doesn't necessarily cause an existential threat to human existence, it surely poses a threat to how we like to live our lives in modern society.
• Figure out nuclear weapon
Again, a single nuclear weapon doesn't pose a threat to all of humanity, but the thousands of warheads in the world right now certainly do. But as time goes on, the chances of one nuclear explosion increases. Just consider all the "near misses" in recent history, where all-out nuclear war was avoided thanks only to the quick thinking and calmness of individuals. , there will be no nuclear conflict. So it's possible to reduce the risk of catastrophe.
• Explore asteroids (小行星)
, just ask the dinosaurs how well it worked out for them. Asteroids and comets have the ability to spark off massive extinction events. wiping out vast numbers of entire species. While these kinds of events are thankfully incredibly rare, the risk they present are horrible. For humanity to make it to the long-term, we need to equip ourselves with hard asteroid detection and relief strategies.
A. Tackle climate change
B. Make geologic record
C. If human beings calm down
D. Here are some goals we need to achieve
E. If we want to safeguard ourselves against potential risks
F. And we can see the effects of climate change everywhere
G. If you desire to know the horrible consequences for ignoring space threats

Scientists have designed ways to "read" words directly from brains. Brain implants (植入物) can translate internal speech into external signals, allowing communication from people with paralysis (瘫痪) or diseases that steal their ability to talk or type. New results from two studies, presented on November 14 provide additional evidence of the extraordinary potential that brain implants have for restoring lost communication, says Leigh Hochberg, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
"The new studies targeted internal speech, which requires that a person only think. Our device predicts internal speech directly, allowing the patient to just focus on saying a word inside his head and transform it into text," says Sarah Wandelt.
Neural signals associated with words are detected by electrodes (电极) implanted in the brain. The signals can then be translated into text, which can be made an oral speech by computer programs.
Another approach presented at the meeting, led by neuroscientist Sean Metzger of the University of California, San Francisco and his colleagues, relied on spelling. The participant was a man called Pancho who hadn't been able to speak for more than 15 years because of a disease. In this study, Pancho attempted to silently think code (代码) words, such as "alpha" for A and "echo" for E. By stringing these letters into words, he produced sentences such as "I do not want that" and "You have got to be kidding." Each session would end when Pancho attempted to squeeze his hand thereby creating a movement-related brain signal that refused the decoding (解码).
With this system, Pancho produced about seven words per minute. That's faster than the five words per minute his usual communication device makes, but much slower than normal speech, typically about 150 words per minute. The techniques will need to ger faster and more accurate to be useful. It's also unclear whether the technologies will work for people with more serious speech disorders. "These are still early days," Hochberg says.
(1)、Who are brain implants intended for?A、People who do research on speaking. B、People who are fond of talking. C、People who are tired of speaking. D、People who have difficulty in talking.(2)、What do patients need to do in the first approach?A、Predict internal speech directly. B、Say a word inside their heads. C、Detect wards implanted in the head. D、Make an oral speech directly.(3)、 How can Pancho stop "speaking"?A、By pressing his hand. B、By decoding the speech. C、By stringing the letters. D、By considering code words.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、Scientists develop a device. B、Brain implants "help" to spell. C、Brain implants "read" thoughts. D、Scientists help people to speak. -

For thousands of years, humans have used names to communicate with one another. We also give names to animals, especially ones we love, such as pets. Until now there has been little evidence of animals naming one another, but a new study suggests that elephants use specific noises to identify other elephants.
A few animals, including parrots and dolphins, have been known to use sounds that are similar to names. Each dolphin invents a signature whistle that is unique to it, and other members of its species communicate with it by simulating this special call. The new study, led by Michael Pardo of Colorado State University, shows that wild African elephants use names in a way that is not just copying sounds and is much closer to the way humans use names.
For the study, the researchers recorded 625 sounds made by wild African elephants in Kenya that they called "rumbles (隆隆声)". This is the most common type of call produced by elephants, and it can travel long distances-as far as 3. 7 miles. It takes place at a very low frequency, which means humans can't hear it.
The researchers analyzed the sounds using computers and found that certain rumbles were directed at specific elephants to get their attention They found that all the elephants in the herd used the identical call to get a particular elephant's attention -these calls were not just nicknames used by one of the elephant's friends. Also. unlike the way dolphins communicate. the rumbles were not just imitations of the elephant they were trying to communicate with.
The researchers then played back some of the recorded rumbles to the elephants. They found that elephants responded more to their own name than to other calls. coming toward it more quickly or calling back faster. Cartlin O'Connell-Rodwell, an elephant expert, said, "The study shows that elephants can still keep in touch with one another even across a large area. "She told Live Science, "The rumbles ere magical, which allow them to spread out much further and still have very close tabs(密切关注) on individuals. "
(1)、What does the underlined word "simulating" in paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Copying. B、Inventing C、Transforming. D、Receiving.(2)、 How do wild elephants spot other elephants?A、By making certain rumbles heard by people. B、By using specific languages like people's. C、By making specific noises with a high frequency D、By using names in a way closer to people's.(3)、 What can we learn from Michael Pardo's research?A、It records 625 sounds from several species. B、It is subjective in the analysis of sounds. C、It is carried out with the help of computers. D、It shows dolphins' calls travel long distances.(4)、 Which of the following does O'Connell-Rodwell agree with?A、Elephants communicate with noses across a large area. B、Rumbles are important in elephants' communication C、Elephants may be last on the way to their habitats D、Rumbles enable elephants to stand nr play closer. -

I used to believe that only words could catch the essence (本质) of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What's 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number.
0. 99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0. 99 is only 0. 01 away from 1, there's still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn't that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式): 1 = 0. 9 which could also be expressed as 1=0. 999999, repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, a number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled (使平行) our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities. and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that's what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still. we can't ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now let's leave it at that: 1=0. 999999. . . and live a life like it.
(1)、Which of the following can best describe "words" in paragraph 1?A、Difficult. B、Clear. C、Powerful. D、Interesting.(2)、 What may the number "1" refer to?A、Valuable chances. B、Definite facts. C、Creativity imagination. D、Social development.(3)、 What does the author think of "1=0. 9"?A、They reveal the meaning of life. B、They are reliable in expressing ideas. C、They are useful in learning maths. D、They give limited possibilities.(4)、 What is the text mainly about?A、Why the equation exists everywhere B、Which equation is important for people C、How numbers can express ideas like words D、When numbers can easily make up equations -

When I was a little boy, the dinner on the eve of the Spring Festival wasI looked forward to most. It was not only for the delicious food that we seldom got to eat, but also an opportunity to have the family gathered together. I would run (happy) with my sister in the house, while my mom was preparing food in the kitchen. She would put some tokens in some dumplings; candies for a sweet life, and peanuts for a long and healthy . In the evening, we would sit around the table, toasted each other and enjoyed the homemade dishes, which tasted much better than anything (cook) in the restaurant.
However, for the last three years, we (eat) out for the Spring Festival family dinner, and we have enjoyed it no less than eating at home. I don't understand why some people refuse this change. Can't they admit that the (prepare) for a dinner is hard work? It is not worth the effort of spending so much time cooking a single meal. We work all year, so why can't one day be about spending time with family and (relax). Eating out is a good choice and it has nothing to do loss of traditions. We still have the dinner with the same people, just in a different place. The occasion is more _(enjoy) without that tiring cooking.

Although I learned English for years. I could not speak in complete sentences when I studied in London as an exchange student. In the beginning, I even needed to think twice before replying to a simple greeting. If you have a similar experience, here are some tips.
Practice "output" more often; It's OK to start with only simple sentences or short paragraphs. Meanwhile, you can even practice your grammar.
At the time I didn't have opportunities to talk with the local people. So, I self-talked to describe what happened around to myself.
Another method is that you can record yourself speaking and then listen to the recordings to identify areas that needs improving.
Language is not a hard science. It is more than just a set of rules, but a means of communication. Like small children picking up their mother tongue, we can get speaking skills more naturally by becoming completely involved in the language and using it. When using a language, we focus on the idea itself, rather than the rules.
Find the "support group" that suits you,
Find a native tutor. A language tutor is a great idea where you can practice regularly and get your mistakes fixed in time. I feel much less shy when I speak English with other non-native speakers there. For example, joining a language group is really a great way to practice output.
A. Communicate with local children.
B. Raise your mind like a kid.
C. It is of much benefit to write in the language.
D. It was so painful that I was so confused about my language ability.
E. Or try some language clubs.
F. It is easier for you to "open your mouth".
G. It doesn't matter if you make mistakes.

Though known for being violent, six-foot-long Humboldt squid (鱿鱼) in the Pacific Ocean, are good communicators,
It is not news that the squid can rapidly change the color of their skin-making different patterns for communication something other squid species are also known to do.
Bot it is totally dark where the Humboldt squid live, more than one thousand feet below the ocean surface. So their pattern is invisible. Instead, a new study suggests that they create backlighting for the patterns by making their bodies glow, like the screen of an ereader.
"Right now, what blows my mind in there's probably squid talking to each other in the deep ocean and they're probably sharing all sorts of cool information." said Ben Burford, a graduate student at Stanford University.
Burford and his fallow researchers studied deep-water recordings made by remotely operated vehicles off the California coast. They found the squid make around 30 different patterns, some of which are only used around other squid, suggesting they're used for communication, The squid also appear to reorder the patterns, almost like words in a sentence.
"That's really exciting because then you can say a whole lot more based on their arrangement," Burford said. "So, they could for instance say, hey, that fish over there is mine, and I'm the ruling squid."
The findings could change the way scientists think about bioluminescence (生物荧光), which is used by many deep-sea animals to attract prey or a mate.
"We generally think of deep: sea stuff as having very simple displays because it's a low-light environment," said Mike Vecchione, a zoologist from the National Museum of Natural Museum of Natural History. "This turns some of our ideas about bioluminescence almost around upside down."
The deep ocean is a challenging place to study, so Vecchione said there may be much more complexity to discover.
(1)、Which of the following is right about the Humboldt squid?A、They are quite friendly to deep-sea animals. B、They are much bigger than any other squid. C、They can communicate in a low-light environment. D、They have better ability to survive the violent ocean.(2)、How did Burford and his team study the Humboldt squid living deep in the ocean?A、By studying former recordings. B、By discussing with other scientists. C、By comparing different types of squid. D、By using machines of high rechnology.(3)、 What do scientists commonly think of the use of bioluminescence by deep-sea animals?A、It is used by deep-sea animals in a simple way. B、It makes deep-sea animals more mysterious. C、It makes the Humboldt squid easy to be found. D、It makes it easy for the Humboldt sqord to communicate.(4)、What is these scientists' biggest discovery of the Humboldt squid?A、Their ability to ling deep in the water. B、Their unique use of bioluminescence. C、Their hard living conditions in the sea. D、Their ways to attract preys or mates. -

"Software developer at Unidays, internatsonal speaker and enthusastie learner" is how Jess White describes herself on her blog. But it is not a path she'd originally planned to follow. After completing her psychology degree. White took a Master's in neuro-science (神经科学), fully expecting an academic carcer. But after her interest was raised by the part of the course that involved coding (编码), she decided to take a Master's course in computer science. She graduated with flying color.
Now 27, White hasn't looked back. She joined Oakbrook Finance in Nottingham as a software developer, and stayed for two years, rounding off her time there by winning Rising Star of the Year at the 2018 Women in IT awards. At Unidays, a business offering discounts to students, she works as a back end developer in the maintenance team, "working on the systems and making them better". It's a job she loves. "It's a challenge every day and you never get bored. There is always something to learn." she says.
White believes that some graduates are put off technology careers because they don't realize the range of jobs available, "A lot of people think tech is programing. But there's also design product management—and everything in life is to do with tech these days. Whether it's buying something with your cards or posting something on social media, you can't really avoid it."
A common misunderstanding, she says, is that IT is all about maths. "I'm terrible at maths and it scared the living daylights out of me when I started this because I thought I wouldn't be able to do it," In practice, it hasn't been a problem, and she has found that there are a lot of creative elements in programing. Her psychology background has proved to be a bonus, enabling her to bring a different perspective to her work, purticularly when she has to cooperate with user experience designers.
As for the future, White wants to learn as much as she can and become very strong in the area.

A Rare Spotless Giraffe
A female giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Tennessee recently—but unlike her mother she was born without any spots an unusual one.
Standing 14 to 19 feet tall, giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world. When mothers give birth, the young giraffes are already 6 feet tall, and other than in especially rare cases, they're born covered in brown spots. Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, announced that it welcomed the birth of a reticulated giraffe (网纹长颈鹿) without any spots on July 31st.
"Giraffe experts believe she is the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet," the zoo said. The zoo's director, David Bright, said zoo staff had been reaching out to zoo professionals across the country inquiring about how unusual the giraffe could be. Zoo officials said the only record of a reticulated giraffe being born without spots was in Japan in the 1970s.
Mr. Bright said that the new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. "Being solid-colored, she may not be able to hide quite well," said Bright. He also thought it was likely that the giraffe would be a "key target for illegal hunters" because she's so unusual.
Pictures of the young giraffe can be seen on the Brights Zoo Facebook page. In a picture, she, without her spots, stood next to her mother, a normal giraffe, in stark contrast. The zoo is asking the public to help name the newborn. People can choose one of four names available on the zoo's Facebook page. The names and their meanings are: Kipekee, meaning unique; Firyali, which means unusual or surprising; Shakiri, meaning she is most beautiful; Jamella, which means optimistic.
Bright said that the zoo looked at thousands of names and their meanings before settling on the four available. "Those four are the four the family really loves," Bright said. "So if she's named one of those four, we're very happy."
According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, there are only about 16, 000reticulated giraffes left in the wild — a more than 50% drop from approximately 36,000giraffes 35 years ago. There are about 117, 000giraffes across nine subspecies(亚种).Many of them are endangered or critically endangered.
(1)、What can we learn from this passage?A、This newborn spotless giraffe was 6 feet tall when it was born. B、Giraffes are the largest animals in the world. C、Bright Zoo was too surprised to accept this unusual giraffe at first. D、Only two reticulated giraffes have been recorded to be born spotless.(2)、Which has a similar meaning to the underlined phrase "in stark contrast" in Paragraph five?A、Rather frighteningly. B、Pretty differently. C、Quite cautiously. D、Very happily.(3)、If you were an official of the zoo, which name would you most probably vote for?A、Unique. B、Sherlock. C、Shaken. D、Surprise.(4)、Where can we most probably read this passage?A、A website. B、A text-book. C、A science report. D、A personal diary. -

My name is Fauna, but Mom and Dad sometimes call me Magpie, since I talk a lot. They call me "animal magnet," too; because animals like me. I don't mind at all because I like them, too. In fact, what I really, really want is a pet of my own. My dad has a pet fish, and I like it a lot — but I would still like a pet that's all mine.
"Please? I asked my parents."Pretty please, with cherries and chocolate and whipped cream on top?"
"We'll see!"
"I'll walk it and feed it and brush it.... well, unless it has scales or something. Then I'll polish them real nice."
"We'll see."
Finally, though, "we'll see" was upgraded to "soon."
"Let's do some research," said Dad, "and see what kind of pet is best for you."
"And keep your eyes peeled," said Mom. "You never know when an opportunity will come along."
One did come along.
I was on my way home from school when I saw a unicorn (独角兽) standing in back of Baker Trembly's shop. He was nibbling stale biscuits out of the trash can. I thought he might be a wild unicorn come into town, but he trotted (小跑) right up to me when I held out the apple I had in my backpack, left over from lunch.
"It followed me home!" I told my parents, after I managed to lead the unicorn to our front gate. "Can I keep it?"
"I hope you were careful," said my dad with a frown. "Unicorns can be dangerous."
"Not this one! He's very sweet. And he's just what I want!. I can keep him. in the garden."
"He does look sweet," said my mom. "Let's check his tags (标牌)."

Humans have sailed the oceans' surfaces for millennia (千年), but their depths remain effectively uncharted. Only about a quarter of the seafloor has been mapped at high resolution. Maps of most regions display only approximate depths and often miss entire underwater mountains or canyons (峡谷).
So a group of researchers has recruited some deep-diving experts: Elephant Seals and Weddell Seals. Scientists have been placing trackers on these blubbery marine mammals around Antarctica for years, gathering data on ocean temperature and salinity. For a new study, the researchers compared these dives' location and depth data with some of the less detailed seafloor maps. They spotted places where the seals dove deeper than should have been possible according to the maps-meaning the existing depth estimates were inaccurate.
In eastern Antarctica's Vincennes Bay, the diving seals helped the scientists find a large, hidden underwater canyon. An Australian research ship called the RSV Nuyina later measured the canyon's exact depth using sonar, and the researchers have proposed naming their find the Mirounga-Nuyina Canyon — honoring both the ship and the involved Elephant Seals, genus (动植物的属) Mirounga.
But seals can't map the entire ocean floor. The trackers used in the study could pinpoint a seal's geographical location only within about 1.5miles. Plus, because the seals don't always dive to the bottom of the ocean, they can reveal only where the bottom is deeper than in existing maps — not shallower. McMahon notes that scientists could improve on these data by using more precise GPS trackers and analyzing the seals' diving patterns to determine whether they have reached the seafloor or simply stopped descending.
The current seal-dive data can still be valuable for an important task, says Anna Wåhlin, an oceanographer. The deep ocean around Antarctica is warmer than the frigid waters at the surface, and seafloor canyons can allow that warmer water to flow to the ice along the continent's coast, Wåhlin explains. To predict how Antarctica's ice will melt, scientists will need to know where those canyons are and how deep they go.
