It boosts your brain. Cold temperatures can excite your brain, allowing improved focus and greater clarity of thought. The cold climate increases oxygen flow to the brain.
It increases brown fat content. Cold weather has the unique ability to increase the number of brown fat cells. Not only do they help us stay comfortably warm in cold temperatures, but they may also even promote weight loss over time.
In cold weather, an even body temperature can be beneficial for a good night's rest. As our bodies try to keep warm when it's cold out, blood vessels get narrower and help control your sleep temperature for a more relaxed and restful sleep. People sleeping in colder environments generally wake up feeling more refreshed than those sleeping in warmer temperatures.
It improves skin health. Low temperatures force us to dress warmly against the cold, leading to protection against environmental aspects that would otherwise remove water from our skin.
All in all, there are many benefits to spending time outside in cold weather! Next time you want to stay inside and avoid the cold, keep these benefits in mind and consider getting outside for a few minutes!

Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study.
"We found that aging was associated with a decline in the amount of the deepest stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep. We then found that people with greater declines in slowwave sleep over time had a higher risk of getting dementia over the next 17 years of follow-up, " said Matthew Pase, senior author of the study.
Slow-wave sleep is the third and fourth stages of sleep, which is important for brain health. During this stage, the body removes unwanted or harmful materials from the brain. "For the brain, this deep sleep is thought to be the most restorative, " said Dr Richard Isaacson, who wasn't involved in the study.
The researchers wanted to know whether chronic(慢性的) reductions in slow-wave sleep over time are linked to dementia risk in humans and whether dementia-related processes in the brain may contribute to getting less of this type of sleep. They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies. By that time, 52 participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Each percentage decrease in slow-wave sleep per year was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss accelerated(加速) from age 60, peaked from ages 75 to 80and slowed afterwards.
"This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person's risk of cognitive decline and dementia, " Isaacson said. "It's important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible. "
(1)、What can we learn from the new study?A、The older you are, the less sleep you will have. B、Slow-wave sleep has been linked to the risk of dementia. C、The rate of slow-wave sleep loss keeps going up with age. D、The amount of sleep has an impact on the risk of dementia.(2)、How did researchers get what they wanted?A、By making a comparison. B、By introducing a concept. C、By referring to another study. D、By making a survey.(3)、What did Dr Richard Isaacson suggest?A、Sleep quality needs more attention. B、We should have enough sleep. C、The elderly should sleep more than the young. D、The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality.(4)、In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?A、Sports. B、Health. C、Education. D、Environment. -

In the northernmost edge of Colombia sits the coastal town of Acandí. Access to the town is only by water or air; there is no road that leads there. The residents there are faced with the struggles of balancing livelihoods while protecting biodiversity.
In the past, traditional community fishing methods, passed down by the elders, focused on the reasonable fishing and management of resources. However, the introduction of large-scale trawling vessels(拖网渔船) decades ago gradually depleted the area's fishing resources, leading to damage to marine(海洋的) life seriously.
Jesús Antonio Julio Cuestas, who serves in the region's conservation and management of marine resources, stresses the bad impact of these developments and calls for new fishing techniques. "Fishing and conservation co-exist as long as we have good management practices and reasonable use of our fishing resources, " says Cuestas. He and other officials actively monitor fishing activities in Acandí. Each morning, they visit the fish markets to gather data on fishery resources—including prices and sizes—to monitor the state of the local fishing industry.
Along with Cuestas, the fishers work to reduce their impact on the marine ecosystem. By changing fishing methods and adopting new practices, they aim for a more balanced approach to fishing. "This year the local fishermen have not used the trawl net s that were causing the death of the leatherback sea turtles, " explains Cuestas proudly. Changes include the efforts of boats to protect the seagrass that serves as feeding grounds for marine life and an end to fishers throwing net s where turtles lay their eggs.
This marine reserve in Acandí, Cuestas believes, is their greatest treasure. He attaches great importance to working together with local residents to improve the quality of life while preserving the marine ecosystem. By doing so, he imagines a picture where individuals from the fishing community can pursue various careers, such as engineers or lawyers, proudly stating that they are the products of the fishing tradition in Acandí.

16、 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One spring day, the wind was gentle and the sun was shining brightly. The sky was clear and blue, and the temperature was comfortable. It was a perfect day for a walk outside.
Our teacher Mr. White asked us all to go out of the classroom to enjoy the natural sights and sounds of the natural world. But before Ruby and I were ready to go out to play, Cathy signed to both of us to stop. We were the best sisters, playing together each time.
"Come over, ladies! Guess what I discovered in Mr. White's locker, with a mysterious smile on her face, Cathy rocked a chalk box with pieces of colorful chalk inside.
"Fabulous! How exciting it would be to write on the blackboard with it!" Ruby exclaimed with curiosity and expectation.
"But we can't do it without our Mr. White's permission, "I said timidly.
"Nobody will find it out. If you're a chicken, you can stand by and just watch. Anyway, Cathy and I would have a try, "said Ruby. She picked out a piece of pink chalk and started to draw a dress.
Not to make them believe I was a chicken, I unwillingly involved myself in the creation of art. Soon I lost myself in the picture drawing though I knew we were breaking the class rule: never touch the teachers' supplies. A moment later we drew a rainbow, a rabbit and a dinosaur respectively. Then we went on drawing many other objects with our imagination. It was real fun.
Suddenly, I noticed the clock above the blackboard. It pointed to 10: 28, only two minutes to the end of the interval. We must erase all on the blackboard before Mr. White came back. If we were caught, we would be punished by doing the cleaning for the class in the next three days.
In a hurry, I picked up an eraser and started destroying our art pieces. As the chalk was so sticky that it left a heavy sign on the blackboard. I had to rub it carefully.

A sense of humor is, simply put, the ability to be amused. Most people have it, and are able to laugh at jokes, humorous situations, and a variety of other potential sources of amusement.
The ability to laugh can drive away tension, for example, while an understanding of complex situations can help people to make good decisions. People with a well-developed sense of humor appear to be happier in psychological studies, and some are healthier as well, suggesting that it may just be good for you.
A number of factors influence someone's sense of humor. Toddlers, for example, tend to be highly amused by pratfalls and slapstick, while teenagers may delight in irony. As people age and what they find funny develops and matures, they are also influenced by their educational level, the surrounding culture, and their religious faith. Others, on the contrary, find them disrespectful and distasteful.
Many people believe that what a person finds funny is something that develops on its own, and that you cannot teach someone to understand why jokes, comments, situations, and events are funny. Children, for example, benefit from play and demonstrations of humor, along with encouragements to laugh. While some children's jokes might seem rather silly to adults, encouraging children to tell jokes and to think about what makes things funny, can help them develop a sense of humor. Older people can also boost this ability by paying attention to ways in which humor manifests around them.
A. Age is a big issue.
B. Here are some tricks to develop sense of humor.
C. Humor appears to be a vital part of better survival.
D. Some people have a unique or odd sense of humor.
E. There are, however, things one can do to enhance it.
F. Generally, humor is considered to be crucial for human development.
G. Some Christian groups, for example, have a deep appreciation for Bible jokes.
