China's popular show Chinese Poetry Conference has not only received a warm welcome from audiences for its cultural knowledge and ancient wisdom, but also become a stage and platform for cultural exchanges.

Cambodian Princess Jenna Norodom appeared on the latest episode of Chinese Poetry Conference on China Central TV on Saturday and shared her knowledge about China's ancient poems. She said that China and Cambodia have an unbreakable bond of friendship and that she has been learning Chinese and ancient Chinese poems.

She noted that she hopes to learn some poems about friendship and recite them to her Chinese friends. During the show, she recited one of her favorite poems: "I live upstream and you downstream by Yangtze Blue. Day after day of you I think, but you are not in view. Although as one we drink, the water clear of River Blue."

In her eyes, the poem written by Li Zhiyi, a poet of the Song Dynasty, expresses well the feeling of longing as Cambodia and China will always be good partners and good neighbors who "drink from the same river."

Shan Jixiang, president of the China Cultural Relics Academy, said that the 2024 season of Chinese Poetry Conference is about not only the preservation of poetry, but also refreshing and boosting China's fine traditional culture. Poems carry the emotional wisdom of the stages of past dynasties and the cultural mark of the Chinese nation. The program perfectly combines the soul of poetry for thousands of years with modern beauty and shows the rich heritage of Chinese culture to the world.

Thirty-three summers ago, a diverse group of passengers and I rode a bus from the residential areas, each of us wrapped in our own world, silent and serious. Among us was a small, grey man, a regular passenger who silently boarded the bus each morning, heading to the senior center. He moved with a stoop (弯腰), his face marked with sadness, unnoticed by the rest of us.

One July morning, he greeted the driver and smiled at us, a gesture met with cautious acknowledgment from the driver and silence from the rest. The following day, he boarded with renewed energy, greeting us all warmly. Shocked, some of us responded in kind, and over time, we began to acknowledge each other more.

The old man, now in a neat suit and tie, with his hair carefully combed , became a daily source of greeting. One morning, he surprised us with a bouquet of wildflowers, slightly wilted from the heat. The driver, with a smile, teased him about having a girlfriend, to which he shyly confirmed. The bus erupted in cheers and applause, and Charlie, our old man, took a bow before sitting down. From then on, Charlie brought flowers every day, and some of us started to contribute to his bouquet, shyly offering them to him. The atmosphere on the bus transformed; men began to joke, chat, and share the newspaper.

As autumn approached, Charlie missed his stop one morning, and his absence continued for several days, prompting concern. Upon reaching the senior center, we learned that he was fine but had lost a close friend and was expected back on Monday. The bus ride back was filled with a quiet silence.

The following Monday, Charlie was there, a bit more stooped, his hair a touch grayer, and without his tie. The bus was quiet, like a church, as we, who had been touched by his presence that summer, sat with tears in our eyes and wildflowers in our hands, a silent tribute to our friend Charlie.

1. Where did the man grow up?

I was in New York City on a school trip.I called home from a pay phone,and my little sister, Alex,said four envelopes had arrived:Georgetown,Cornell,William and Mary and the University of Massachusetts.She then opened and read them to me in her ten-year-old voice:"We regret that we do not have a place for you..."Rejected from Georgetown."You were one of many qualified candidates.."Rejected from Cornell.And number seventy-three on a waiting list of seventy-five at William and Mary.Accepted to U Mass,my safety school.

I didn't digest the rejections immediately.I toured the United Nations,took train home and went back to school.Then I realized that other people had gotten into schools they really wanted to go to.Up to that point in my seventeen years,I hadn't really failed at anything.I got good grades, made the school team and scored well on my SATs.I hadn't experienced any major disappointments in my life,no  deaths,no  disease,no  divorce,no  cavities(龋齿)even.So being rejected seemed disastrous.

I had always assumed I'd go to one of the"good schools."I really wanted to be chosen:This is the place for smart people,and we want you.U Mass,on the other hand,had the reputation of being a party school to which,come  September,I'd be headed with the guy who sat next to me in tenth-grade history and who,during tests,left his book open on the floor and turned the pages with his feet.

I did not get active like my friend Heather,who,having been rejected by her first choice,made I Love Lucy-style plans to drive to the Duke campus with her soccer ball and her science-fair project to show the admissions board(招生委员会)exactly what they were rejecting.I simply said things like,"I've decided to give up the undergraduate degree and take a cake-decorating course."The subtext in this was:I'm stupid.The world isn't fair.

In December 2023,Harbin,a city famous for its winter landscapes,once again transformed into a frozen wonderland as the 25th Harbin lce and Snow Festival  (formal)opened its gates.

The theme of the 25th Ice and Snow Festival,"Dragon Soars Over Ice and Snow:Chasing Dreams in the Asian Winter Games,"was    nod to the city's rich cultural heritage and its dream of hosting major winter sports events.The highlight of the festival was the massive ice and snow sculptures,which  (carve)out of solid ice and snow bricks by skilled artists.These sculptures,  (range)from abstract art to life-size copies of celebrated landmarks,were indicative of the artistry and  (creative)of the artists involved.Some of the sculptures were even  (equip)with LED lights,creating a magical and otherworldly atmosphere at night.

Writing a book is no easy task,even for adult professional writers.Many would-be authors dream of a day when their work can be found on 1 shelves.But for 8-year-old Dillon Helbig, that 2 has already become a reality in a 3 way.

Dillon created an 81-page graphic(图画的) 4titled"The AdventuresofDillon  Helbig's Crismis"on a hardcover notebook using colored pencils.He 5 decorated the cover to make it look like a published book.Then he brought the book to his local library,and secretly 6 it among the children's books.

Imagine the librarians' 7 when Dillon's mom called the next day to inform them of her son's"achievement".Instead of 8 it,they took time to read the novel.Its 9 elements featuring  Santa,a  walking bomb,and a  talking  turkey,caught  their  attention.They  decided  to officially10 the book in their collection.

Now eager readers are waiting to 11 the book.If each reader kept it for the standard four weeks,it  would  take  four  years  to 12 the waiting list.This experience  has  strengthened Dillon's resolve to pursue a career as a(n)13 Hats off to Dillon for following his dreanr and making it happen,to his supportive mom for14 him,and to the librarians who 15 and protected a child's passion for writing.

Remote work,once celebrated as a pandemic-era (疫情时代)solution,now faces challenges. Some influential figures in banking are leading the charge to phase out remote work.Major financial institutions like Goldman Sachs are returning to traditional five-day workweeks,reflecting a broader trend away from remote work.Tech leaders such as Google are also tightening  control,linking attendance to performance reviews.The widespread support for remote work benefits seems to be declining as employers apply stricter policies.

Recent  global  surveys  reveal  a  disconnect  between  employers'remote  work  plans  and employees'desires.Employers worry about decreased productivity with remote work,citing studies showing lower efficiency compared to office-based work.Despite these concerns,employees remain firm in their preference for remote work,seeking more flexibility in their work arrangements.

Remote work's appeal lies in time saved from traveling to work and a better work-life balance. Studies show remote work saves an average of 72 minutes daily,equal to significant time savings  annually.Employees feel more engaged while working remotely,valuing these benefits as much as an 8%pay increase.The shift to  remote  work  has  been  solidified  by  the  pandemic,with  many workers now in part-time or fully remote setups that may be challenging to backtrack.

It is no coincidence that the crackdown on remote work is happening as some industries cool. Job cuts across Wall Street and Silicon Valley have handed power back to businesses.However,even in tech and finance some employees  are  standing  their  ground.In  May  Amazon  said  that  300 employees staged walkouts over the e-empire's return-to-work policies.

Other firms are quietly adapting with the times.Deloitte and KPMG,two professional-services giants,want to reduce their office footprint in favour of more remote work.The gap between the two sides of the work-from-home battle may yet narrow.The question is whether the bosses or the bossed will yield the most.

The train driver completed his journey to the station and climbed down from the train to get a cup of coffee.Suddenly,the train started on its  own to  the  garage  for  servicing.Not  to  worry; programming of trains to move automatically from stations to railway garages is a practice that has actually been in place for over 25 years,particularly in the fully automated urban rail network.

The shift toward train autonomy is speeding up due to  digitalization.Digital technologies include artificial intelligence,big data,connectivity—such as the intermet of things connecting trains to intelligent railway switches—and built-in information secerity Collectively,they will enable the train to achieve true autonomy for safe and efficient operations.With these digital technologies,Rail Management Systems can automatically set routes,visualize the condition of the railway network in real time,optimize(优化)resoufces,ard calculate forecasts based on actual data.In addition,Driver Advisory Systems provide a continuous flow of comprehensive information to enable drivers to make safe decisions.

Beyond the clear benefits for rail  operators  and  passengers,autonomous  trains  will  bring significant benefits to society.That is because more efficient traffic management will mean increased train frequency and improved services in crowded areas.With more than 55 per cent of the world's population in cities  today—and  with  nearly  70 per  cent  projected  by  2050,addressing  urban transport issues is critical.
