  • 5、Hiking is a fun way to get some fresh air and exercise. Here are a few simple tips to make sure your next hiking trip is both safe and enjoyable.

Hike with at least one other person. Not only is hiking more fun with a friend, it is also safer. If you decide to hike alone, make sure that you let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. This way, if you get lost or injured, someone will know where to look for you and when to send help.

Have plenty of water. Even if you are only going for a short hike, it is important to have lots of water on hand so that you avoid dehydration (脱水). Plan to bring one liter of water per person per hour of hiking. So make sure to drink your water frequently, even if you are not very thirsty.

Wear correct kinds of clothing. You should wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and thick socks. Your clothing should be comfortable and easy to move around in. Clothing that is too loose might catch on rocks or branches.

If you have not exercised in a very long time, do not try to go on an 8-mile hike up a mountain on the hottest day of the year, Instead, you should start gradually. First, go for regular walks in your neighborhood. Next, you should try to find places to walk on steep hills or rocky soil.

    A. Don't take a too long trip at a time.

    B. Make sure that your body is prepared.

    C. You can begin to dehydrate before you even realize it.

    D. If you get injured, your friend will be able to go and get help.

    E. But clothing that is too tight might become uncomfortable as you walk.

    F. If you are going on a long hike, you might want to bring an extra pair of socks just in case.

    G. With enough practice, you will be able to take longer hikes across more challenging landscapes.

  • 6、Body image affects women and men all around the world, In the new study carried out by psychologists at Durham University, the team set out to understand how body appreciation varies between women from different cultures.

"Most researches around body appreciation to date has focused on younger white Western women," said Louise Hanson, who led the study. "We wanted to expand the scope and include older women and other cultures as these groups have historically been not noticed."

A total of 1,186 women aged 18-80 were enlisted from six countries — four Western countries (Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US), as well as China and Nigeria. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires to understand more about their own sense of body appreciation and the pressures they experience around body image from family, peers and the media.

The results showed that all three groups had relatively stable body appreciation across ages. However, there were great cultural differences.

White Western women were found to experience much higher pressure from the media to meet thin or athletic body standards across their lifespan. This pressure did decrease with age, but even at its lowest, it was still higher than that for the other ethnic groups.

Black Nigerian women did not display a strong pressure towards a thin or athletic build and reported higher levels of body appreciation and far less media pressure regarding body image. However, they also reported higher levels of appearance pressure from peers, which reduced with age.

Meanwhile, Chinese women mostly continued to favor a thin body type across all ages. They reported the highest ongoing family and peer pressure around body image, but media-related pressure was less and decreased with age.

The researchers hope that their findings can encourage more cross-cultural studies to better understand the cultural dynamics that impact on body appreciation.

(1)、How does Louise Hanson's research differ from previous ones?
A、It studies how body image affects the female. B、It has a wider variety of participants. C、It focuses on younger white Western women. D、It explores the influence of social media on body image.
(2)、How did the researchers carry out the study?
A、By conducting an experiment. B、By comparing different studies. C、By collecting data. D、By providing a set of questions.
(3)、What can we learn from the research findings?
A、Women from all six countries wish to be thin. B、Black Nigerian women suffer media pressure most. C、Body image pressure drops with age in all cultures. D、Chinese women have the highest media-related pressure.
(4)、What's the purpose of the research?
A、To better understand the impact of body appreciation on women. B、To display the differences between western culture and other cultures. C、To know more about cultural influences on body appreciation. D、To reveal the pressures that women in different countries suffer.
  • 7、Sorry rabbits, but giant tortoises are still winning the race of life by treating it like a marathon and taking each step slow and steady. Recently, the world's oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has turned 191 years old. This extends his title of the oldest living land animal by another year.

Unofficially, there have been claims of older tortoises, including one believed to have been 255 years old when it died in 2006. Researchers have not been able to pin down exactly what keeps them around for so long, but their slow-motion lifestyle may have something to do with it.

Giant tortoises have very slow metabolisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slower rate than smaller and faster animals. Physiologist Max Rubner introduced the rate of living theory. The theory suggested aninverse relationship between metabolism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metabolism, the shorter the life. Scientists have had some issues with the theory over the past century, but it did produce the phrase "‘live fast, die young", and it serves as the basis for more research on the topic.

The link between metabolism and longevity (长寿) is still not understood. Some scientists believe that metabolism is linked to the creation of free radicals (自由基). They are the molecules (分子) that damage cells and that increase as more energy is burned by the body. According to this theory, tortoises live longer because their slow metabolisms bum less energy. which means less harm to the cells in their bodies.

Theories on aging alone don't fully explain how tortoises live much longer than humans, but their reproductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanation. Because of their massive hard shells and their geographic isolation (they only live on a few specific islands), giant tortoises have very few enemies to worry about. This means giant tortoises don't have to rush into reproduction to keep their species alive.

Each theory has its limitations and unanswered questions, but scientists believe that a combination of biological and evolutionary factors is what keeps giant tortoises alive for so long.

(1)、What does the underlined word "inverse" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A、Similar. B、Opposite. C、Clear. D、Unchanging.
(2)、What can we learn about free radicals?
A、Free radicals can protect cells. B、Free radicals increase with age. C、Fewer free radicals lead to a longer lifetime. D、The slower the metabolism, the more free radicals.
(3)、Why don't giant tortoises rush to produce their young?
A、They have little worry about extinction. B、They have a low reproductive ability C、They live a long time. D、They usually prefer to be alone.
(4)、What could be the best title for this article?
A、Live fast, die young. B、The way metabolism works. C、Jonathan, oldest tortoise. D、Secret to giant tortoises' longevity.

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o'clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn't expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, "Good morning!"

It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane's sleepiness disappeared.

Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.

"My dear, today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother."

Hearing her father's words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother's birthday?!

While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn't been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.

She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.

    Tips for online learning

Online learning has the same basic elements as face-to-face learning. The major difference is that instruction is delivered online. Many of the strategies for effective face-to-face learning also apply to online learning. Here are some strategies we recommend:

Create space to learn. Invest some time to understand your needs and preferences as a learner, and what an effective study environment looks like for you. For example, you might need a quiet place to study, or you might need to listen to classical music. Consider what equipment you might need. Wherever you study, try to minimize distractions.

Manage your time effectively. Spend some time getting familiar with your online courses, understanding what is expected of you, mapping out key deadlines, and planning study time. Research shows that learners gain more information if they spread their study over multiple days or sessions. Make sure your routine works with your other commitments so you're more likely to stick to it.

Just as with face-to-face learning, mental energy matters: take time to reflect on whether you have understood the materials, try to remember and sort the information you have learned to aid memory, test your understanding, mix different concepts and skills into the same study session to build connections and fluency, ask questions, participate in class discussions, and try teaching concepts to others.

Ask for assistance! In an online learning environment, you may need to ask lots of questions and take ownership over shaping the learning experience so that it meets your needs.

Finally, if you're facing specific challenges such as illness, mental health, accessibility, balancing childcare responsibilities, etc., it's important for you to reach out to your instructors or the relevant student support services for discussion and creative problem-solving.

    A. Regularly reflect on the course materials.

    B. A long-term routine will help you stay on track.

    C. Actively review and apply what you have learned.

    D. However, online learning may require some additional skills to be successful.

    E. At the end of the week, reflect on how you did, and adjust your routine as required.

    F. This might mean asking your instructors or peers for help, or attending study groups.

    G. Work with your roommates or family to create personal space so you can stay focused.

  • 15、In 2009, when Qatar (卡塔尔) bid to host the 2022 Football World Cup, it promised a carbon-neutral (碳中和) event. Even back then, the prospect of neutralizing the carbon-dioxide emissions (排放) generated by hosting hundreds of thousands of fans in newly constructed stadiums, in a desert state, seemed fanciful. So it is proving. In their greenhouse-gas accounting report, published last year, FIFA (国际足联) and the Qatari organizers estimated that the World Cup would generate 3.6 million tons of CO2 emissions. Estimating emissions for big sporting events is a relatively new practice and methods can vary, but that figure is higher than any recent World Cup or Olympics.

It is also likely to be a significant underestimate. A report in May 2022 by Carbon Market Watch (CMW), a climate watchdog (监督者), found that the official forecast failed to account accurately for the emissions generated from stadiums. FIFA, which insists its method is "best in practice", reckons that the majority of the emissions (52%) will come from fans and players travelling to Qatar, while less than 25% are from stadium construction. That is because organizers expect these stadiums to be used for years after the World Cup, spreading their carbon footprint way into the future.

CMW believes such an excuse is far from reasonable. Before the World Cup, Qataris were able to get by with only one stadium, it points out. Consequently, it estimates that the emissions from stadium construction for the World Cup are undercounted by a factor of eight. It puts the real figure at 5 million tons. Though it amounts to less than 0.02% of the world's annual emissions, sports teams and organizations should have set a positive example in this.

To remove the doubt from outside, Qatar has established the Global Carbon Council (GCC), a dedicated environmental agency. Beyond adjusting for World Cup emissions, the GCC will promote a path to "a low-carbon future", a great step for a country with the world's highest emissions per person. Yet the agency is still at its early stage. Only six projects, saving less than 600,000 tons, have been approved so far.

(1)、What is the main problem Qatar and FIFA are faced with at present?
A、The 2022 World Cup isn't as successful as it should be. B、They may fail to keep the promise to hold a green event. C、The figure they published is higher than that of other events D、They are unfamiliar with the new practice of the World Cup.
(2)、How does Qatar and FIFA cut down the carbon footprint of the World Cup?
A、By insisting on its way of environmental protection. B、By promising to use the new stadiums for more years. C、By blaming the greenhouse-gas emissions on travelers. D、By cooperating with Carbon Market Watch for instructions.
(3)、Why does the CMW refuse to accept the explanation given by Qatar and FIFA?
A、5 million tons accounts for a little of the annual emissions. B、The stadium construction for the World Cup sets a bad example. C、The method they employed in estimating the emissions is unscientific. D、There will be more stadiums than Qatar actually needs after the World Cup.
(4)、What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A、The GCC is an agency specially established for the World Cup B、The Qataris attach great importance to environmental protection. C、The Qataris need to make more efforts to hold a carbon-neutral event. D、The GCC has achieved a lot in cutting down greenhouse-gas emissions.
  • 16、17-year-old Tibetan girl Cigla is a freshman at Nagqu No. 2 Senior High School in Lhasa, which sit 3,650 meters above sea level. She now plays point guard for the school's 12-member female basketball team.

"Practice makes perfect. You get used to the altitude when you love the sport and train hard enough," said the potential basketball star, who has been crazy about the sport since taking it up three years ago.

With outstanding speed and accurate passes, she never fails to shine on the basketball court, even when she competes against the boys. Though she is a freshman in high school, Cigla already has a clear picture of her future--entering a sports college to study basketball. In the eyes of Cila, who comes from a poor herder's (牧民的) family in northern Xizang, studying in Lhasa, the most developed city in this area, has made it much easier for her to realize her basketball dream.

With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters. Nagqu is among the most uninhabitable places in Xizang. Low-oxygen environments and extreme weather have long influenced the health of Nagqu students, hampering the development of primary education in the area.

Like Cigla, many students at the school are from poor farmers' and herders' families. Dawa Droma, a senior student also on the school's female basketball team, recalled, "I had never touched a basketball before that game but joined the class team anyway. When I scored and heard my classmates cheer for me, I couldn't feel more proud. That's how I fell in love with basketball and why I never looked back." Reflecting on the influence of basketball on her life, Dawa Droma said the sport had helped her get fit and build up confidence over the years. "Meeting players from different schools has certainly made me a more outgoing person," she said.

(1)、What do we know about Cigla from the text?
A、She loves playing basketball but dislikes training hard. B、She is in Grade One at a senior high school at a high altitude. C、She's been crazy about playing basketball since she was 12 years old. D、She's got used to the altitude because she has lived there for years.
(2)、In Cigla's opinion, what can help her realize her basketball dream?
    A、Her school's location. B、Her clear plans. C、Her family background. D、Her entering a sports college.
(3)、What does the underlined word "hampering" in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A、promoting. B、maintaining. C、interpreting. D、preventing.
(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、Dawa Droma barely feels proud when scoring. B、Dawa Droma has been affected by basketball greatly. C、Playing basketball improves Dawa Droma's sense of touch. D、Players from different schools have become Dawa Droma's friends

I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda (日程), and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct (不同的) from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.

Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my academic fields for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn't appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn't handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.

To help me stick with it, I made a New Year's resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.

What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I've started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.
