How to Be an Effective Member of a Team
Working in a team can be rewarding, but at times it can be difficult. To create a successful team, effective communication methods are necessary. Here we've outlined some ways to avoid some common team mistakes as well as some helpful advice.
Communicate
Letting bad feelings grow will only make you feel bad and want to isolate yourself from the group. Not only does it feel good to get the bad feelings out, but it will be better for the team in the long run.
People in your group will lose respect for you if you' re constantly blaming(责备) others for not meeting deadlines. Group members understand if you have a heavy workload and aren't able to meet a deadline. Saving something like. "I'm really sorry, but I' ll get it to you by the end of today." will earn you a lot more respect than trying to make it seem like it's everyone else's mistake that leads to your missing the deadline.
Support Group Members' Ideas
If a team mate suggests something, always consider it! And this makes you a good team member. After all, nobody likes a know-it-all.
Listen Actively
Look at the person who's speaking to you, nod, ask questions and acknowledge what's said by paraphrasing points that have been made. If you're unclear about something that's been said, ask for more information to clear up any confusion before moving on. Effective communication is a vital part of any team.
Get Involved
Share suggestions, ideas, solutions and proposals with your team members. Take the time to help your fellow teammates. You can guarantee there will be a time in the future when you'll need some help or advice.
A. Don't Blame Others
B. Avoid Showing Off
C. Thus, the value of good listening skills shouldn't be ignored.
D. Have faith that people will recognize when good work is being done
E. If you have a problem with someone in your group, talk to him about it.
F. And if you've helped them in the past, they' ll be more than happy to lend a helping hand.
G Considering the group's ideas shows you' re interested in other people's ideas, not just your own.

"I'm going to fail!" My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist. What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships. Once I was cooking dinner for a friend, I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success evermore exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can't imagine how excitedly I was after that. I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it.
Now it's clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end, but it can be a beginning(1)、What did the author finally get from a failed cooking?A、Worries. B、A closer friendship. C、Bad feelings. D、More experience.(2)、Why did the author feel excited after the running test?A、Because she could work out regularly. B、Because she received honey as a reward. C、Because she achieved success after many failures. D、Because she got another chance to take the test.(3)、What does the underlined word"overcome" in Paragraph 4 mean?A、Successfully deal with. B、Quickly respond to. C、Narrowly escape from D、Eagerly come up with.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?A、to show the negative effects of failures B、to point out her best friends fear of failures C、to introduce different types of failures D、to encourage the readers to face failures bravely -

As the school year barely(刚刚) starts in Denver, French teacher Melanie is filled with worry that her students are always absent-minded. Yet, the problem isn't messaging, enjoying video games or delivering notes. Surprisingly, the problem is about the ongoing heat wave in Denver.
"Today was a little bit hot, so I noticed that kids were very sleepy and they had to get up to drink water quite often." said Melanie, who works at Denver East High School. "If you lose too much water, you have to keep going to the water fountain, which can take away from their classroom experience." While nodding off in class on a warm day may seem acceptable for average teens, Melanie's observation carries a bigger result than dry lips.
There have been quite a few media reports about teachers noticing that students were not able to focus on hotter days," said RJisung Park, a researcher. "Does a hotter climate during the school year actually affect the rate of learning?" The drop in academic achievements couldn't be explained by hotter weekends or hotter summers, but the trend was connected to higher temperatures on school days alone.
The connection between lost learning and a greater number of hot days is one more example of how climate change is already affecting our lives, and it's an alarm bell for what we stand to lose in the future.
Humans still have time to lessen the global warming. Without any important changes in the next 10 years, the globe will be trapped in heat waves that might be too much for human beings.
(1)、What may cause students to be absent-minded according to the text?A、Video games. B、Text messages. C、Heat waves. D、Classroom notes.(2)、What can be inferred from the second paragraph?A、Kids often go to the water fountain for lack of water. B、Extreme heat may lower a kid's ability to learn. C、Nodding off in class is a sign of respecting teachers. D、Kids are more interested in drinking water than sleeping.(3)、How does the author feel about dealing with the future global warming?A、Optimistic. B、Uncertain. C、Worried. D、Indifferent.(4)、What does the text mainly talk about?A、The way that global warming continues. B、The reasons why kids are absent-minded in class. C、The hotter it grows, the more focused kids become. D、The hotter it grows, the harder it will be for kids to learn. -

When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned (指派) to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn't play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, "Shelley, now you can color at any time."
Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn't know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn't give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a battle(战役) for me and that I fought back tears so people wouldn't know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable, She said, "Thank you." From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.

I was a volunteer for an organization at the beginning of this year. The organization is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organization, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, "I don't think we can raise much money today. "
"Don't worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left," I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, "What is cancer?"
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, "Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That's why we're collecting money for it. "
"Do children suffer from cancer, too?" asked the boy.
"Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. " Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, "How much money have you collected?"
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn't raise much money. At last, we said, "Not much. "
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few onedollar and fivedollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.

Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it's a good thing that they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to a new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter and it's all because of technology.
"We move quickly from one site to another on the web," says Doctor Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, "and we are losing the ability to concentrate." With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average Internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions (分心) too: e-mail, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites.
Some people are worried about the effect on young people. "You need time to understand and think about what you read", says Julia Wood, from London. "Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they concentrate on one subject for longer."
Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students' concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so worried about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect, "The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better."
But not everyone believes that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says, "On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn't worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill."
(1)、Why are humans becoming like goldfish?A、They have a wealthy life. B、They like to go fishing. C、They are influenced by digital distractions. D、They feed more goldfish in their life.(2)、What may be the reason of human's losing the ability to concentrate?A、There are too many Internet users. B、They have to skip around the Internet. C、They can move very quickly. D、They are too young to concentrate.(3)、What will help students deal with the short attention span problem?A、Receiving emails. B、Texting messages. C、Watching quickie movies. D、Reading more books.(4)、What is Ray Cole's attitude towards looking through websites quickly?A、Supportive. B、Unfavorable. C、Skeptical. D、Cautious. -

Going on holiday not only makes you feel good while you're there — you gain the health benefits for months, new research shows.
Jetting off to exotic destinations such as the Maldives cuts your blood pressure, helps you sleep better and bounce back from stress, it found. The benefits last at least a fortnight longer than the vacation and can be felt for months in some cases where it is claimed. Experts say workers should always take their full holiday entitlement each year — as many as one in three don't — to get the benefits.
The study compared key health markers in holidaymakers visiting Thailand, Peru or the Maldives, with people who stayed at home and continued working. The average blood pressure of those on holiday dropped by six percent while the workers saw their blood pressure rise by two percent over the same period. The sleep quality of holidaymakers improved by 17 percent while that of the non-holidaymakers deteriorated by 14 percent.
The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress — known as the stress-resilience test — improved by 29 percent. There was a 71 percent fall in stress resilience scores among workers. Tests showed a fall in blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of diabetes, trimmer waistlines and enhanced mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks after returning home.
The Holiday Health Experiment was conducted by tour operator Kuoni and Nuffield Health, the UK's largest healthcare charity.

Mum and Matt lived in the country next to a forest. Every weekend, they took walks through the forest.
But everything changed after Mum found a new job in the city. They said goodbye to the trees and birds and moved to an apartment far from nature. They went to the park, but there were lots of people. It was hard to hear the birds when everybody was talking and laughing.
One afternoon, there was a knock on their door. It was Mrs. Potter, their elderly neighbour. She was holding a large, potted tree. "I'm trying to bring this bonsai(盆栽) home, but it's too heavy for me," said Mrs. Potter with a warm smile.
"Glad to help," replied Mum.
"It's beautiful." said Matt, looking at it with admiration. "It reminds me of the forest back home."
When Mrs. Potter opened the door to her apartment, Matt was surprised. It wasn't a typical apartment at all. It was a tiny forest! The trees were carefully placed in a pot, their branches filling the space with a sense of nature. As Mum placed the bonsai, Matt's attention was drawn to a berry-covered tree on the balcony(阳台). He saw a blackbird hopped(跳) onto it, picking at the berries. Matt watched in wonder. It had been so long since he'd seen a bird so close.
"We can still have trees in the city," Mum said. "Although they are a little bit different from the ones in the countryside."
"And where there are trees, there are birds, too." Matt replied softly, giving a thoughtful nod.
Mrs. Potter smiled. "Exactly, Matt. These bonsai helps bring nature closer to us, wherever we live."

Creative writing has no written formula(公式) and no strict laws. Therefore, we have more freedom to express ideas, thoughts and imagination in creative writing. But it doesn't mean creative writing needs no techniques. Follow these tips if you want to boost your creativity and improve the way you write.
Always be writing
You never know what will inspire your writing. Keep a notepad or download a notes app to your personal device so you can record any ideas you have.
Embrace rewriting.
Even the greatest writer rarely gets it right in the first draft. Or, in some cases, start over. Storytelling and word building take a lot of time and thought, and only through rewriting will you be able to craft a version that works best.
Know your audience.
Ask yourself whether this story is for your creative writing students or a wider population. Maybe you are a novelist with a specific readership. Maybe you are an academic writer trying to break into the young adult market. It's essential to know your audience, narrow down the tone and work in ways that appeal to your target audience.
Show Don't Tell.
This is an effective tool and a useful rule for all writers. Fiction is for entertainment, so entertain your readers! Let them see, hear, feel and smell. Show them what is happening through details, facial expressions and images, rather than simply telling them.
A. Make them feel amused by your story.
B. It is all about originality and creativity.
C. Anyone can make great creative writing.
D. Give them a vivid picture of what you have created.
E. Don't be afraid to reedit and erase what doesn't work.
F. Don't ignore the random ideas that pop into your head.
G. It's rare for a piece of writing to appeal to all the people.
