Color is in everything we touch, taste, smell and feel. It evokes(唤起) emotion without any thought. We are all familiar with it, but do you know the following facts?
Silver will save your life. When buying a new car and finding yourself facing various choices, you can't think clearly. Your best choice is to go with silver. Silver-colored cars are least likely to be involved in a car accident.Another reason is the silver color's ability to have a look of cleanliness.
Tough prisoners and crazy patients? It is the color commonly used to help calm down those who are out of control. So it surely has a useful place and a purpose, other than decorating a dress or Barbie's dream house.
Yellow makes you hungry. Yellow and orange are not recommended for use in kitchens, as they have apositive influence on your appetite.I'm not normally one for conspiracy(阴谋) theories- but perhapsthere's something in it for them if we remain ignorant of yellow's effects.
Color is an imaginary friend. Technically, it's all in our heads: color does not exist at all.So, it you start a heated debate over color combinations with someone that you are certain has a low IQ or is just color-blind, remember it's a pointless argument and you should drop it instantly. You're both wrong.
A. Pink comforts the nerves.B. Blue is the most common favorite color.
C. They are most noticeable on the road and in low light.
D. Yellow-colored walls seldom leave us wanting more food.
E. It can be the focus of our careers, our lifestyle and the fun we have.
F. Then where would our restaurant owners be without the clever tricks?
G. Color tries to make sense of the huge amount of information from the outer world.

Humans are not the only ones who underwent self-domestication. So did our close relatives, the bonobos, and the species we call our best friend. A tiny proportion of the genome(基因组) differentiates dogs from wolves, and yet millions of dogs are comfortably curled up in our homes, while wolves move around at the edge of extinction.
When our research group began its work almost 20 years ago, we discovered that dogs also have extraordinary intelligence: they can read our gestures better than any other species. Wolves, in contrast, are mysterious and unpredictable. Their home is the wilderness, and that wilderness is reducing.
But not so long ago the evolutionary race between dogs and wolves was so close, it was unclear who would win. Dogs, in fact, did not descend from wolves. Instead, dogs and wolves shared a wolf-like ancestor.
Folklore supposes that humans brought wolf puppies into camp and domesticated them. Or as wolf expert David Mech wrote in 1974,"Evidently early humans tamed wolves and domesticated them, eventually selectively breeding them and finally developing the domestic dog from them." But this story has not held up. Taming an animal occurs during its lifetime. Domestication happens over generations and involves changes to the genome.
So how did wolves turn into dogs? Back in the Ice Age, as our human populations grew more sedentary, we probably created more rubbish, which we then dumped outside our camps. These leavings would have included tempting pieces of food for hungry wolves. Notevery wolf would have been able to scavenge(觅食,拾荒),however. These animals would have had to be unafraid of humans, and if they displayed any aggression toward us,they would have been killed.
After generations of selection for friendliness without intentional selection by humans, this special population of wolves would have begun to take on a different appearance. Coat color, ears,
tails: all probably started to change.
Animals that could respond to our gestures and voices would be extremely useful as hunting partners and guards. They would have been valuable as well for their warmth and companionship, and slowly we would have allowed them to move from outside our camps to our firesides. We did not domesticate dogs. The friendliest wolves domesticated themselves.
(1)、What can be summarized about wolves and dogs from the first three paragraphs?A、Wolves are smarter than dogs. B、They are very much racially divided. C、They are close relatives but dogs seem to be on the winning side. D、Dogs have made their ways to indoor life while wolves to the wild.(2)、What is the meaning of the underlined word "sedentary" in paragraph 5?A、diverse B、limited C、living in the same place D、involving regular migration(3)、What does the author conclude from the history of dogs and wolves?A、Dogs evolved from wolves. B、Selective breeding developed domestic dogs. C、Taming and domesticating an animal are the same thing. D、Friendliness as a quality translates into an evolutionary strategy.(4)、Which of the following is suitable for a title?A、From Wolf to Dog B、Dog: Our Favorite Pet C、An Intentional Domestication D、A Competition Story between Wolf and Dog -

Last year, 138,000 San Francisco residents used Airbnb, a popular app designed to connect home renters and travelers. It's a striking number for a city with a population of about 850,000, and it was enough for Airbnb to win a major victory in local elections, as San Francisco voters struck down a debatable rule that would have placed time restrictions and other regulations on short-term rental services.
The company fiercely opposed the measure, Proposition F, with a nearly $10 million advertising campaign. Italso contacted its San Franciscan users with messages urging them to vote against Proposition F.
Most people think of Airbnb as a kind of couch-surfing app. The service works for one-night stays on roadtrips and longer stays in cities, and it often has more competitive pricing than hotels. It's a textbook example ofthe"sharing economy", but not everyone is a fan.
The app has had unintended consequences in San Francisco. As the San Francisco Chronicle reported lastyear, a significant amount of renting on Airbnb is not in line with the company's image: middle-class familiesputting up a spare room to help make ends meet. Some users have taken advantage of the service, using it to turn their multiple properties into vacation rentals or even full-time rentals. Backers of Proposition F argued that this trend takes spaces off the conventional, better-regulated housing market and contributes to rising costs.
"Thefact is, widespread abuse of short-term rentals is taking much needed housing off the market andharming our neighborhoods,"said ShareBetter SF, a group that supported Proposition F. Hotel unions haveprotested the company's practices in San Francisco and other cities, saying that it creates an illegal hotel system.
San Francisco is in the middle of a long-term, deeply rooted housing crisis that has seen the cost of livingexplode. Actually, explode is a generous term. The average monthly rent for an apartment is around $4,000.Located on a narrow outcropping of landoverlooking the bay, San Francisco simply doesn't have enough space to accommodate the massive inflow of young, high-salaried tech employees flocking to Silicon Valley.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, some San Francisco residents supported the measure simply because itseemed like a way to check a big corporation. Opponents of Proposition F countered that the housing crisis runsmuch deeper, and that passing the rule would have discouraged a popular service while doing little to solve the city's existing problems.
(1)、The intention of Proposition F is to ____.A、place time limits in local election. B、set limits on short-term rental. C、strike down a controversial rule. D、urge users to vote against Airbnb.(2)、What is the negative consequence of Airbnb on San Francisco?A、It shrinks the living space of middle-class families. B、Users are taken advantage of by the service financially. C、It makes the house market more competitive. D、It indirectly leads to high house rental price.(3)、The housing crisis in San Francisco results from ____.A、explosion of the living cost B、its geographic characteristics C、generosity of local enterprises D、inflow of migrant population(4)、The author's attitude toward Proposition F is ____.A、objective B、supportive C、negative D、indifferent -

A long time ago, when I worked in Ahmedabad, we would often drive to Mount Abu for short trips—it took us anywhere between seven to eight hours to drive up. That year, my close relatives were visiting from Lucknow during the holidays, and we made a plan to visit Abu for three days. Since there were seven of us, including my brother's family who also lived in Ahmedabad, we hired two cabs. We picked ourselves into the vehicles, stacked (堆放) our luggage on the carriers on top and started out.
A good time was badby all, and soon it was time to return. During the journey back, we stopped at a Dhabafor tea and snacks near the Mehanadistrict. That's when I noticed suddenly that the rope with which the luggage was tied on and of the carriers had come loose and one of the suitcases was missing. It must have fallen off somewhere along the way.
Although it didn't contain any valuables—just clothes and some cash, we decided to retrace our steps, drawing back four kilometres, looking for the bag. But luck wasn't our friend: we could not locate it and returned to Ahmedabad depressed.
After about a month, one day, while in my office, I got a call from my assistant that a certain Mr. Shah wanted to see me. I was in the middle of a meeting so he was asked to wait. After I got done, I called him into my office.
I was looking after the development of small industries in the state at the time, so my immediate query was. "How can we help you? Do you want to set up an industry or are you facing any issues in your enterprise?"
To which he said, "No, sir. I have not come for any official help. It is a personal matter. Did you lose something recently?"
Of course, it all came back to me and I told him about the lost suitcase from the cab back from Mount Abu a month ago.

We have featured people who lost weight by following many different methods. Some focused strictly oneatingwell. Here are some lessons you can learn from those people.
One thing most of our wellness winners had in common was a turning-point moment. For San Boeuf, her journey started when her unhealthy weight was threatening her dream of becoming a mother. She focused on her goal of being healthy enough to have kids.
Many of our winners relied on technology to assist them on their weight-loss journeys. There 're numerous apps, devices and online communities. Sousing all the tools available makes a difference, whether those are apps to log your food, smart devices to track your exercise, or online communities to find the support you need.
Losing a significant amount of weight is a long process. All of the wellness winners experienced struggles along the way but managed to stay or get back on track and maintain their healthy habits. Susan Elizabeth Chaney struggles with an eating disorder after losing a significant amount of weight.
Choose a diet you can stick with. In other words, the specific plan matters a lot less than the effort you put into it. Some used intermittent fasting( 间歇性禁食), while others found eating smaller meals throughout the day to be more sustainable.

12、阅读理解
A small group of paleontologists (古生物学家) recently discovered 10 species of ancient mammals previously unknown to science with the help of an enormous number of helpers at their dig site: ants.
The study of ancient mammals throws new light on the diversityof mammals that existed in North America around 33 million to 35 million years ago, when the climate was changing dramatically. It also pays attention to the harvester ants, with which researchers have long had a love-hate relationship. "The ants are not fantastic when they're biting you," said Samantha Hopkins, a professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. "But I've got to appreciate them because they make my job a whole lot easier."
Most species of harvester ants live in subterraneancaves that sit beneath a small hill of dirt. They strengthen the dirt by covering it with bits of rock and other tough materials. The ants have been known to travel over a hundred feet from their caves and to dig six feet deep in pursuit of materials that help secure their caves. The materials include fossils. Harvester ants can carry materials 10 times to 50 times the weight of their body, although they do not weigh very much, so the heaviest fossil they can collect weighs less than the average pill.
Given the size, harvester ant hills are hot spots for what scientists call microvertebrate(微型脊椎动物) fossils, which are animal fossils too small to see without a microscope. For over a century, scientists like Dr. Hopkins have found sediment (沉积物) off the sides of harvester ant hills in search of these fossils, making it easier to find large numbers of fossilized mammal teeth without spending hours in the field sifting through sand and dirt.
(1)、What is the purpose of the passage?A、To compare two different species. B、To provide evidence for discoveries. C、To promote awareness of mammal protection. D、To introduce a kind of ant serving as a helper.(2)、Which aspect may influence the diversity of mammals in the past?A、Ant numbers. B、Climate. C、Cave materials. D、Dirt locations.(3)、What does the underlined word "subterranean" mean in Paragraph 3?A、Coastal. B、Underground. C、Urban. D、Mountainous.(4)、What can we learn about the harvester ants from the last two paragraphs?A、Their caves are miles deep. B、They can carry pills around. C、Fossils may be found around their hills. D、Materials with fossils are their food. -

Parents with high expectations for their children are nothing new to Chinese kids. However, people often don't realize that children also have expectations of their parents.
China Youth & Children Research Center did a survey in 2018 on this topic in the United States, Japan, South Korea and China. It showed that 83.8 percent of Chinese children want to be friends with their parents.
But the reality is different. Respecting one's elders and the concept of hierarchy are preventing parents from becoming friends with their children.
. As children, what can you do to create a pleasant atmosphere at home and make friends with your parents?
Act like an adult.
If you want your parents to give you more freedom, you should show them that you're ready to be treated differently. For example, learn to use self-control. Show them that you can manage your time well.
US psychologist Carl E. Pickhardt wrote in Psychology Today that sharing feelings with our parents can lead to positive changes, while not sharing them can cause misunderstandings.
Do something nice or helpful for your parents. For example, help them with some home chores, make them gifts or teach them some computer skills. Their trust in you will grow.
A. Open your heart.
B. Traditional Chinese values might be a reason.
C. Be a good student at school.
D. Both parents and children should make efforts to create friendship in the family.
E. Care for your parents.
F. Chinese parents tend to spoil their children.
G. What expectations do Chinese children have for parent-child relationships?

Have you ever heard someone say "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" or explain to you why it's vital to start the day with a healthy breakfast? It seems that this meal, for many of us, is necessary for our day to start well, but is it really that important?
The word "breakfast" comes from "breaking the fast (禁食期)" — the idea of ending the period in which we don't eat during the night. The regeneration process that takes place while we are sleeping consumes some of our natural food reserves in our bodies. Breakfast gives us an opportunity to replenishthose reduced stores of things like protein and calcium. So, in that way, a healthy breakfast makes sense.
There are also many studies which seem to relate a state of obesity(肥胖) to skipping breakfast. In fact, it leads many health experts to conclude that a healthy breakfast not only regulates but also loses weight. In a U.S. study, 50,000 people were observed over seven years, and those who ate a healthy breakfast were found to have a lower BMI, which seems to suggest that breakfast may indeed help people maintain a healthy weight.
But it might not be as simple as that. Some experts, like Alexandra Johnstone, professor of the University of Aberdeen, suggest those who skip breakfast might be less aware of healthy diets, and people who eat breakfast might have a healthier lifestyle overall — exercising and not smoking, for example. And with the popularity of intermittent (间歇的) fasting to lose weight, there may also be some benefits to skipping breakfast. Intermittent fasting can improve blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, and lower blood pressure.
So, while breakfast has its benefits, it might not be the most important meal. It seems that a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet might be more important for us than just one single meal.

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special meal. I glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.
As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was sticky dough (面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face him laughing at my work.
I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Dad got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing.
Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in the rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder.
Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the. fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the "living thing" was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.
