    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In a certain store where they sell puddings, a number of these delicious things are laid out in a row during the Christmas season. Here you may select the one which is most to your taste, and you are even allowed to sample them before coming to a decision.

I have often wondered whether some people, who had no intention of making a purchase, would take advantage of this privilege. One day I asked this question to the shop girl, and I learned it was indeed the case.

"Now there's one old gentleman, for instance," she told me, "he comes here almost every week and samples each one of the puddings, though he never buys anything, and I suspect he never will. I remember him from last year before that, too. Well, let him come if he wants it, and welcome to it. "

She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman limped (跛行) up to the counter and began looking closely at the row of puddings with great interest.

"Why, that's the very gentleman I've been telling you about," whispered the shop girl. "Just watch him now. " And then turning to him, "Would you like to sample them, sir? Here's spoon for you to use. "

The elderly gentleman, who was poorly but neatly dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the puddings, only braking off occasionally to wipe his red eyes with a large torn handkerchief.

    "This is quite good. "

"This is not bad either, but a little too heavy. "

All the time it was quite evident that he sincerely believed that he might eventually buy one of these puddings, and I am positive that he did not for a moment feel that he was in any way cheating the store. Poor old chap! Probably he had come down in the world and this sampling was all that was left him from the time when he could afford to come and select his favorite pudding.

    续写要求:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Things to Expect from Your Peer Tutoring Session

Peer tutoring is one of the most helpful tools to use during your college years Sometimes, you will not have all the answers and that you may need help. There is probably no better way to get some academic assistance than that from your fellow students.

    Expect constructive criticism

This will probably be the most uncomfortable part of the session. Tutors are being harsh with you not because they want to be mean and ruin your existence.

The only way for then to ensure this is to be completely honest with you.

    Expect change

You will have the appointment with a changed perspective on your work and your method of completing it. Every tutor has a different learning style and teaching style that is unique to them, but it is up to you to use what they teach you to your best ability. If a tutor teaches you how to solve a math problem in a way that makes sense to you, but is also different from what you have learned in class, you will have to use that method because it works for you.

    Expect discipline (sometimes)

We are humans, it happens. It is nothing to be ashamed of. However, if a tutor notices that you have been slacking off(懈怠), don't be surprised if they call you out on it. Your tutor wants you to use your potential to do the great things that they know you are capable of.

    Expect improvement

Last but not least expect to improve.  Once you practice what yon have learned in the session, you will notice a rapid change in your grades and your learning ability. If you ask me, I think that is completely worthy of an A+.

    A. Your work in the future will change.

    B. Change is good and is nothing to be afraid of.

    C. Sometimes, we all try to get by with a little less.

    D. Feel fortunate that your peer tutor is recognizing your mistakes.

    E. They simply want you to be the best of the best to your best ability.

    F. Peer tutoring can be difficult, but its ultimate goal is for you to improve.

    G. Peer tutors are understanding, helpful, and especially honest enough to help you out.

A Norwegian company has created what it calls the world's first zero-emission, autonomous cargo ship. Developed by chemical company Yara International, the ship was designed to reduce emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, and move goods away from roads to the sea.

The shipping industry accounts for between 2.5% and 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. Nearly all of Norway's electricity is generated by hydroelectric power, which is generally considered to have much lower carbon emissions than burning fossil fuels, despite the fact that it still produces greenhouse gases.

Capable of carrying 103 containers and with a top speed of 13 knots, it will use a 7 MWh battery, with about a thousand times the capacity of one electrical car. The ship will be charged near the port before sailing to container harbors along the coast and then back again, replacing 40,000 truck journeys a year.

As well as providing a greener option compared to conventional cargo ships, there is no crewman, which means it will be more cost-effective to operate. Initially, loading and unloading the ship will require humans, but gradually, all loading, discharging, and some other operations will also be eventually operated using autonomous technology. That will involve developing autonomous cranes(起重机) and carriers, which are the vehicles that place containers onto ships.

According to researchers, fully autonomous ships are the future. But there are many challenges to overcome before autonomous ships can be used for commercial long sea journeys. Navigating traffic in large ports could be a major barrier.

Without a crew aboard to carry out maintenance checks, autonomous ships would need built-in self-diagnosing systems with the ability to detect and fix problems, or call for human assistance.

Although Yara International has no plans to add more autonomous ships to its operations, we may see more elements of AI technology used on commercial ships in the future. Elements are already being used in shipping today when it comes to the voyage and we'll see more partly autonomous elements added.

(1)、What's the good news about the new ship?
A、It's conventionally designed. B、It has been fully marketed. C、It's environmentally friendly. D、It is luxuriously equipped.
(2)、What plays a critical role in the ship's successful operation?
A、The autonomous carriers. B、The latest navigating traffic. C、The burning of fossil fuels. D、The massive battery capacity.
(3)、What can we learn from Para 4-6?
A、Researchers are pessimistic about its future. B、The new ship isn't completely autonomous yet. C、A lot more such ships will be in operation soon. D、No human labor is needed to maintain the ship.
(4)、What is the author's attitude to technology being applied to shipping?
    A、Reserved. B、Favorable. C、Suspicious. D、Disapproving.

The Australian accent developed because so many early settlers were drunk. Dean Frenkel, a communications expert at Victoria University in Melbourne, said that the first British arrivals to the country were such big drinkers that the distortion(失真) to their speech caused a verbal change that persists to this day.

Academic Mr. Frenkel wrote in the Australian newspaper The Age, "Our forefathers regularly got drunk together, and through their frequent interactions added an alcoholic slur(模糊) to our national speech patterns. For the past two centuries, from generation to generation, the drunken Australian accent continues to be taught by parents to their children. "

Mr. Frenkel continued, "The average Australian speaks to just two-thirds capacity — with one-third of our speaking muscles always keep still as if lying on the couch. Missing consonants(辅音) can include missing "t"s (Impordant), "l"s (Austraya) and "s"s (yesh), while many of our vowels(元音) are lazily transformed into other vowels, especially "a"s to "e"s (stending) and "i"s to "oi"s (noight). "

The Australian accent has historically lacked regional variation because although the communities began as isolated(孤立的) settlements, there was a great deal of internal migration, particularly from Sydney where the first accent began.

The most common fear people have about the Australian accent is that it's becoming more Americanized. But Dr. Felicity Cox, an associate professor of linguistics at Macquarie University, said that accents are remarkably resistant to change from factors such as social media, and as long as people want to be known as Australian, they will keep the distinctive Australian sound. It will always remain a strong marker of national identity.

(1)、What makes the Australian accent special?
A、Verbal patterns of native speakers. B、Early residents' custom of drinking alcohol. C、Frequent interactions with foreign countries. D、The popularity of the British education system.
(2)、How may Australians pronounce the word "light"?
    A、Loight. B、Leght. C、Lighs. D、Lighd.
(3)、What accounts for the lack of regional differences in Australian accents?
A、Small numbers of populations. B、Isolated geographical locations. C、Similar lifestyle among residents. D、Large migrations within the country.
(4)、What can we learn about the Australian accent according to Dr Felicity Cox?
A、It has become more diverse than ever. B、It has been greatly influenced by social media. C、It is a unique symbol of Australian identity. D、It changes a lot based on American pronunciation rules.

About a decade ago, Lawson was at a beach in Virginia watching his kids build castles right next to the waves.

"I kept trying to get them to come back because I thought it was a terrible idea," he remarked. He wanted them to build their sandcastles closer to the dunes. But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris (残骸) washed up from the ocean. "It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles," said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children's book, the idea came to just use pictures. "It seemed like it would work beautifully without words," he said.

A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It's the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021's Over the Shop. Leng's illustrations stay pretty true to real life. Three siblings spend the day building sandcastles and watching them get destroyed by a flying hat. "To me it's a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life. These are the things I like to capture," said Leng.

Leng spent part of her childhood in France, and she was inspired by European comic books "What I love to do when I illustrate a picture book is add side stories to the main storyline. I always think about the readers and the longevity of the book, and I want them to be able to discover something new every time they revisit the book," Leng explained.

At the end of the day, the sleepy-eyed kids pile into the bus that will take them home. "Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it's getting dark and you feel completely exhausted," Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.

(1)、Why does Lawson mention the scene where the kids built sandcastles?
A、To suggest a way to enjoy leisure. B、To tell us the inspiration for his book. C、To convince us of how life works. D、To remind readers of the childhood.
(2)、What do you know about the two books mentioned?
A、The stories are literally works of fantasy. B、They are purchased by kids universally. C、They carry no elements of comic books. D、Readers can only find pictures in them.
(3)、How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph?
    A、Pleased. B、Indifferent. C、Disturbed. D、Exhausted.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A、Childhood in sandcastles B、Beautiful childhood memories C、Popular illustrated books D、Explore the mystery of nature

"Can I give you my phone number? If you don't find her family or anyone, can you call me? My name is Mark Higgins. "

"I'll see what I can do," the doctor said, noting down his number and leaving with the woman.

Michael Jordan, as "Air Jordan", changed basketball with his graceful moves and jumps. made him unique was not only because of his skills but also because of his mental strength. He refused to give up in time of failures and kept on learning from , which was the secret to his success. In life, Jordan has learnt to his success with others by starting a club to help young people.

Background noise—like the chatter in a coffee shop or the drone of passing traffic—might slow our reading speed, but according to a study of Russian readers, it doesn't 1 how our brain understands written text.

2 , if you're wondering whether you should be listening to podcasts or music while working, the study has some interesting points to make. In particular, it examined how we might change our reading style to compensate for auditory noise and visual distractions such as typos or poor formatting.

"Overall, previous studies reported a harmful effect of both auditory and visual noise on reading fluency and 3 , though their results varied," write linguistics researcher Nina Zdorova and colleagues. "So far, none of the studies exploring the influence of noise 4 it in the framework of the language processing theories. "

One of the language processing theories examined was the noisy channel model, which proposes that our brain deals with noise by looking at the meaning of 5  words more and at entire sentences less. We then use a bit of smart guesswork to 6  the overall meaning and relationships between words.

The second theory is the good enough model; that's when our brains aren't analyzing every single detail of a text but instead only grabbing enough words for a ‘good enough' understanding. By focusing less on the precise words, our brains can 7 some cognitive resources to deal with noise.

To see how reading was affected by noise 8 these models, the researchers ran two experiments: one on auditory noise (71 participants) and one on visual noise (70 participants). When it came to the auditory noise test, background chatter from overlapping podcasts caused people to spend longer looking at the key section of sentences before completing their reading. This extra time could 9 the noise, meaning sentence comprehension isn't affected by it. In the visual noise test, comprehension remained the same while reading speed 10 . That's a bit 11 considering previous studies, but the researchers think people just wanted to finish the task, with the visual noise an uncomfortable distraction.

"In both experiments, we observed that longer total reading time was 12 with an accuracy increase for incorrect sentences," write the researchers.

There's a lot going on in this study, but overall it's a bigger win for the good-enough language processing theory and an indication that auditory and visual noise doesn't make us 13 any more or less on any particular comprehension method while we're reading.

With so many variables to measure in terms of what's being read and what the 14 noise is, further study is required to learn more. 15 potential distractions may not interrupt your reading as much as you think.

What to Do With a Day Off

If you're fortunate enough to have today off from work, the most important thing on your to-do list is to actually take the day off. Studies have shown that people send only 40 percent less email on holiday Mondays compared with regular Mondays.  Here are a few suggestions on how best to spend your day off.

    Evaluate your career.

When was the last time you were completely honest with yourself about your career and whether you're doing what you want to be doing?  A full-time worker will spend roughly

    80. 000 hours at work during her working life, so if you're in the wrong career that could mean tens of thousands of hours spent devoted to something you don't even really care about, much less to feel  your passion.

    Have a family meal.

Work, school,sports practices and other obligations all seem to get in the way. But studies show that families who dine at home together are happier and healthier.

"I'll get to it sometime. " Yeah, yeah, it's what we all tell ourselves to get out of doing the things on our to-do list that are hanging over our heads. But today is a great day just to get it done! Send that email, finish up that task at home, send that holiday thank-you note you still haven't gotten around to. Whatever it is,just do it.

    A. You'll feel so much better,I promise.

    B. It might even make you more productive at work this week.

    C. It can be tough to get the whole family together for a meal.

    D. Besides, taking time to let your brain rest and recover makes you better at problem-solving.

    E. Spend more quality time with your family by having a family meal.

    F. If you're like most people, probably not recently.

    G. Do that one thing you've been putting off.

Scientists have discovered more than 5,000 new species living on the seabed in an untouched area of the Pacific Ocean that has been identified as a future hotspot for deep-sea mining, according to a review of the environmental surveys carried out in the area.

It is the first time the previously unknown biodiversity of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), a mineral-rich area of the ocean floor that spans 1.7m sq miles between Hawaii and Mexico in the Pacific, has been comprehensively documented. The research will be critical to assessing the risk of extinction of the species, given contracts for deep-sea mining in the near-pristine area appear imminent

Most of the animals identified by researchers exploring the zone are new to science, and almost all are unique to the region: only six, including a carnivorous sponge and a sea cucumber, have been seen elsewhere.

Contracts for mining exploration in the CCZ have been granted to 17 deep-sea mining contractors in an area covering 745,000 sq miles. The companies, which are backed by countries including Britain, the US and China, want to dig for minerals including cobalt manganese and nickel in part to sell to the alternative energy sector.

To better understand the impact of mining this fragile ecosystem and its newly discovered inhabitants, an international team of scientists has built the first "CCZ checklist" by compiling all the records from expeditions to the region. Published in the journal Current Biology, it includes 5,578 different species, of which an estimated 88% to 92% had never before been seen.

To study and collect specimens (样品) from the ocean floor, biologists have joined research cruises in the Pacific that send remote-controlled vehicles to traverse (穿越) the seabed 4,000 to 6,000 meters below. Adrian Glover, a deep-sea biologist at the NHM and senior author of the study described it as an "incredible privilege". The expedition, funded through the Natural Environment Research Council and others, is backed by UK Seabed Resources (UKSR), a deep-sea mining company that operates the UK's exploration area. The scientists watch operations by video link direct from the boat as new species are gathered by remote control vehicles in the darkness below.

The seabed, Glover said, is an "amazing place" where, despite the extreme cold and dark, life thrives. "One of the characteristics of the abyssal plain is the lack of food, but life has a way of persisting down there," he said, "It's a mystery. " One of the deep-sea animals discovered was nicknamed the "gummy squirrel", because of its huge tail and jelly-like appearance, he said. There are also glass sponges, some of which look like vases.

With approval for deep-sea mining looming, Glover said he believed it was "imperative that we work with the companies looking to mine these resources to ensure any such activity is done in a way that limits its impact upon the natural world".

As is the fate of anyone running a hotel in Kerala these days, Bijoy George is a man with too much to do. Before pandemic-caused lockdowns began in 2020, he managed 40 employees at the Eighth Bastion Hotel in the charming historic quarter of Kochi, a bustling coastal city. Now that business is back to pre-covid levels he needs the same number of staff again. But he has only 20 workers. His plight is shared with every other hotel, café and bar. It is a result of the state's hospitality (招待) employees moving all together in large numbers to Qatar, not to watch football but to take up employment tied to the World Cup.

As the start of the competition approaches on November 20th, workers are quitting at a rate Mr. George says he has never seen in his 22 years in the business. Qatar, a country with a population of under 3m, will have welcomed more than

1.5m visitors before the matches conclude on December 18th. That means finding staff to run all the new hotels that have been built along with other venues that have been pressed into service to profit from the sports fans.

Kerala has long been a significant source of hospitality workers for Qatar and other Middle Eastern countries. Its state government provides good schools with English-language instruction but few jobs. More than 2m people, 17% of its working population, already work overseas, largely in the Gulf.

The appeal of Qatar is straightforward. Starting salaries approach $1,000 a month, more than six times the level for similar jobs in Kerala. To replace those who have left, Kerala's employers have been casting their nets wider. Recruiters have been extending their searches to many other Indian cities. But that means the most common word on name-tags pinned to the breast pockets of workers is "trainee".

Among the many skills that need to be taught, says Mr. George, is smiling at customers — the failure to do so a result of shyness among those new to the workforce. The danger is that after a week or so when confidence grows, even these employees may slip away to the Gulf.

Most contracts run for three months, concluding at the end of December, not long after the World Cup final. Returning workers will be welcomed back with open arms. Filling the gaps is even more important as Indian tourism and weddings have restarted. The reunions, though, may be short-lived. The game these workers will have learned from the World Cup is how to be paid better. That means leaving India.

(1)、The underlined sentence in paragraph one implies that ____.
A、other hotels, cafes and bars will share Bijoy's 20 employees B、other hotels, cafes and bars will have to lay off some workers C、other hotels, cafes and bars also send the workers to Qatar D、other hotels, cafes and bars also find it hard to employ enough workers
(2)、Which of the following DOESN'T contribute to hospitality workers in Kerala taking up jobs in Qatar?
A、Millions of tourists have to be served during the World Cup. B、Hospitality workers are in high demand with new hotels and venues open for business in Qatar. C、Qatar provides good education and English training for potential workers in Kerala. D、The salaries of similar jobs in Kerala are much lower than those in Qatar.
(3)、Which of the following difficulties do Kerala's employers face due to lack of workers?
A、Kerala's employers have to take on new employees in Asian cities. B、Many of the new employees will pin their name tags to their breast pockets. C、The new employees will not greet the customers as a result of shyness. D、The new employees may soon follow the trend of going to the Gulf.
(4)、What makes the reunions between Indian workers and employers probably a short-lived one?
A、Jobs outside India can provide Indian workers with a more decent life. B、It will soon be the off season for Indian tourism and weddings. C、Another grand occasion will soon begin in the Gulf. D、The workers only sign short-term contracts with the employers in India.

As we grow up, it becomes natural for people around us to lose contact with the hobbies that once were dominant in their lives. While it's painful to accept this, the new reality becomes normal for most of us as we face new academic, adult and job responsibilities.

I've been dancing since I was four and I plan to continue dancing in college. However, I've always feared that dancing will affect my study and eventually become a brilliant memory of my childhood. After learning about Sommer Gentry's story, I had an answer.

Sommer Gentry, previously a professor of mathematics at the United States Naval Academy and a coach at the Naval Academy's Swing Dance Club, is currently a teacher at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Gentry and her husband also started a swing dance community to introduce non-dancers to swing dance.

Through teaching, Gentry was inspired to view dancing from an engineering point of view. She said, "I realized it is an engineering question: how do you dance well with someone? It'd be great to give people mathematical and engineering proofs that they have to dance the way I say. " Gentry investigated the complex haptic (触觉的) communication behind the moves in swing dance and showed that two persons could move in coordination (协调) with pure haptic communication, She entered an exciting area of research which is about engineering, psychology and human motor control.

It's incredibly inspiring that Gentry was able to intertwine her academic work with her passion for dancing. Gentry said, "It means that even when I'm dancing outside, I'm thinking about my research project. "

Gentry found that digging into her academic interest does not mean letting go of her other non-academic ones. Instead, she found a way to include both in her professional life. Just like me, Gentry is a mathematician and dancer, thus, her story resonates (引起共鸣) strongly with me, and I want to be like her in the future.

(1)、What did the author think of dancing before learning of Gentry's story?
A、It was too challenging for her B、It'd gradually disappear from her life. C、It'd help develop her sense of responsibility. D、It brought her an unpleasant childhood memory.
(2)、What contributed to Gentry's studying dancing from the angle of engineering?
A、Her interest in exploring engineering proofs. B、Her husband's need to promote his dance club. C、Her desire to be an expert in medicine and health. D、Her experience in teaching math and swing dance.
(3)、What does the underlined word "intertwine" in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A、Hardly balance B、Carefully compare. C、Closely combine. D、Successfully challenge.
(4)、What does the last paragraph imply about the author?
A、She has decided to change her major. B、She will continue to pursue her hobby. C、She used to be Sommer Gentry's student. D、She originally had little interest in engineering.
