Thanks to the hard work of companies like California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation(OAC), space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to offer a chance for space visitors to "get out of the world" by checking into the world' s first true hotel in low Earth orbit(轨道).
The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like Voyager Space Station(VSS) will be made up of two rings connected together. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The hotel which is powered by the sun will travel at high speed to create artificial gravity(人造重力), providing tourists a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people.
While the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will take time and money. The team is now building a smaller prototype(雏形) ring. Once finished, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity. Transporting the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too high, it is cheap compared to the 55 million it costs to stay on the ISS(International Space Station).Besides, guests at the Voyager Station will be living in the greatest conditions.
"You' re going to have the top cooks making really good food, " Orbital CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. "There' ll be two shows every night as well. " Visitors will also be able to take part in the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allow visitors to admire views of Earth and space.
If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first visitors in 2027. "If you are eager to be among the first, you can pay an amount of money to save your place ahead of time, " added John Blincow.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally(心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as "I start most days thinking that I will have a good day", they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale(等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators(消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn' t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
"The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers, " the study said. "While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic(学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results. "
(1)、Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?A、Talking about their lifestyles. B、Introducing their after-school activities. C、Reporting their mental states on a scale. D、Answering questions about screen time use.(2)、What do the researchers find about teenage girls?A、They often have higher levels of satisfaction. B、Few of them take part in after-school activities. C、Anxiety has become a serious problem among them. D、Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.(3)、What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?A、Earlier findings about screen time are wrong. B、High screen time is common among teenagers. C、No after-school activities means no screen time. D、Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.(4)、Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?A、They are good for teenagers' physical health. B、They help to improve teenagers' mental health. C、They encourage teenagers' social development. D、They allow teenagers to become better learners. -

When Simon Beck creates artwork, he doesn' t use paint or pencils. Instead, he takes his snowshoes and compass(指南针) and walks to a wide-open area of fresh snow, making huge designs in the snow by walking and leaving snowshoed footprints in different patterns.
The idea to make a snow mural(壁画) came to him in 2004 after a day of skiing in Savoie, France. Mr Beck noticed an inviting area of undisturbed snow and thought it would be fun to draw a star in it. Being a mapmaker and an expert at orienteering(定向越野赛), Mr Beck was good with these skills to create in the snow.
Once he got to his site, he started in the center of the design. He then "drew" the primary lines while holding his compass to make sure he kept walking straight. Next, he added smaller lines, keeping track of their length by counting his footsteps. Finally, he filled in, or "shade", some of the areas between the lines with more footsteps. The result looked impressive, especially when he viewed it from above on a nearby chairlift.
On average, a snow design takes Mr Beck 10 hours to make. So far, Beck has created over 300 snow murals—the size of the biggest one is about 10 soccer fields. As Mr Beck worked to build a collection of photos to publish in his book Snow Art, he posted some of his pictures on the Internet. His art started to gain more attention and companies began asking him to create snow artwork. Mr Beck has been invited to make snow art all over the world, including Canada, the United States, Russia, and China.
It doesn' t worry Mr Beck that his work will disappear with the next snowfall. Once he has photographed a design, he' s ready to think about the next one. "I can make another drawing in the same place when the weather improves, " he says.
(1)、Where did Beck' s idea to make a snow mural come from?A、His love for artworks. B、His skiing experience. C、His mapmaking skills. D、His painting collection.(2)、How does the compass help Beck in drawing in the snow?A、By stopping him from getting lost. B、By finding the right site to draw. C、By finishing drawing more quickly. D、By creating a better snow artwork.(3)、How does Beck feel about his artwork being ruined by fresh snow?A、Calm. B、Annoyed. C、Cheerful. D、Worried.(4)、What' s the best title of the text?A、Snow: Nature' s Most Beautiful Artwork B、Snow Mural: A Cross Between Nature and Art C、Simon Beck: An Artist Painting in the Snow D、Snow Art: A Photo Collection of Snow Artworks -

Many people wonder what they can do to become well-rounded and competitive while increasing their rate of success.
Be willing to expand your mind. Rid yourself of assumptions and convictions so that you can be open and receptive to new information. You will eventually come across information that challenges your worldview. Rather than remaining resting in your comfort zone, use this time to stop, reflect and shed light on these ideas in a way that can develop and expand your vision.
After the mind has been ready, the next step is application. Learning information you can use in your daily life is very important to having a continuous desire to further advance your education. Skill-based learning, for example, is useless if it isn't applied. Reading a book on automobile repair isn't the same as physically changing the oil or tire on your car. Reading about art isn't the same as picking up a brush. If your knowledge can be directly applied in a functional and fun fashion, put it into practice! Many people learn by being hands-on.
Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and try to always take something valuable away from your daily interactions. If you come across anything that confuses you, ask them! Never be too prideful, for each question you don't ask is a missed opportunity!
Commit to expanding your mind, continuing your education and becoming a student of life. Use the world as your classroom, and always come away with a lesson. Remember to cultivate your mind so it is prepared to expand, blossom and grow. And share your fountain of knowledge.
A. Go ahead and challenge yourself today.
B. Create a to-learn list just as you would a to-do list.
C. There are so many things they can do to achieve their goal.
D. You can find a large number of outstanding people in your school.
E. This at times may even contradict what you have always believed to be true.
F. Many people are professionals in their field and have valuable information and insight to share.
G. An often overlooked yet simple way to improve is to increase your knowledge by being a self-starter.

Women were less likely than men to support the Vietnam war, the Gulf war, or the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. They commit far fewer murders. They are less likely to favor strikes. For some scholars, these are grounds for thinking that a world run by women would be more peaceful.
But European history suggests otherwise, according to political scientists Oeindrila Dube and S. P. Harish. They studied how often European rulers went to war between 1480 and 1913, and found that states ruled by queens were 27% more likely to get involved in wars than those ruled by kings.
This was not all the queens' fault: men, seeing them as soft targets, tended to attack them. Frederick the Great of Prussia once declared: "No woman should ever be allowed to govern anything." Shortly after becoming king, he attacked the newly crowned Archduchess of Austria, Maria Theresa, and seized Silesia province. Despite years of war, she never recovered it.
But perceived weakness is not the whole story. Queens, the researchers found, were more likely to gain new territory. Catherine the Great expanded her empire by some 200,000 square miles. And married queens were more aggressive than single queens or kings, whether single or married.
The authors suggest several reasons for this. First, married queens may have been able to form more military alliances (联盟), making them confident enough to pick fights. Their husbands had often served in the army before they married, and were well placed to strengthen military ties between their homelands and their wives' states.
Second, unlike most kings, queens often gave their husbands a lot of power, putting them in charge of foreign policy or the economy. During the 1740s, Maria Theresa's husband, Francis I, reformed the Austrian economy and raised money for the armed forces while his wife ruled much of central Europe. Prince Albert was Queen Victoria's most trusted adviser, shaping her foreign policy until his death in1861. This division of labor, the authors suggest, freed up time for queens to pursue more aggressive policies.
The modern era, too, has witnessed female leaders in wars: Golda Meir and the Yom Kippur war, or Margaret Thatcher and the Falklands. The number of countries led by women has more than doubled since 2000, but there is plenty of room for improvement: the current level of 15 represents less than 10% of the total. A world in which more women took power might be more equal. Whether it would be more peaceful is a different question.
(1)、The underlined "perceived weakness" in paragraph 4 means that ____.A、women were less likely to support wars B、women could not recover lost territory C、women commit far fewer crimes D、women were soft targets(2)、Why were married queens more likely to gain new territory?A、Because their military alliances picked fights for them. B、Because they were ambitious and aggressive by nature. C、Because their husbands were supportive in state governing. D、Because they centralized all power into their own hands.(3)、What is the purpose of mentioning the two female leaders in the last paragraph?A、To imply there is room for improvement in gender equality. B、To indicate more females become leaders in modern times. C、To illustrate female leaders cannot prevent wars in modern times. D、To suggest female leaders have their share of wars in modern times.(4)、According to the passage, we can safely conclude that ____.A、married women are not fit to govern their states on their own B、female leaders should be responsible for all wars throughout history C、the world wouldn't be more peaceful even if more women took power D、the division of labor allows queens to survive economic crisis -

On January 7, David Bennett went into the operating room at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a surgical procedure never performed before on a human. The 57-year-old Maryland resident had been hospitalized for months due to a life threatening disease. His heart was failing him and he needed a new one.
Bennett's condition left him unresponsive to treatment and ineligible (不合格) for the transplant list or an artificial heart pump. The physician-scientists at the center, however, had another-also-risky-option: transplant (移植) a heart from a genetically-modified pig.
"It was either die or do this transplant," Bennett had told surgeons a day before the operation. "I want to live. I know it's a shot in the dark, but it's also my last choice."
It took the medical team eight hours to finish the operation, making Bennett the first human to successfully receive a pig's heart. "It's working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don't know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before," Barkley Griffith, who led the transplant team, told the New York Times.
While it's only been five days since the operation, the surgeons say that Bennett's new pig heart has been, so far, functioning as expected and his body wasn't rejecting (排斥) the organ. They are still monitoring his condition closely.
"I think it's extremely exciting," says Robert Montgomery, transplant surgeon and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, who was not involved in Bennett's operation. The result of the procedure was also personally meaningful for Montgomery, who received a heart transplant in 2018 due to a genetic disease that may also affect members of his family in the future. "It's still in the early days, but still the heart seems to be functioning. And that in and of itself is an extraordinary thing. Up to now most experimental heart transplant procedures have been done between pigs and other animals. This is the first time that surgeons have taken it into a living human."
(1)、What do the words "a shot in the dark" underlined in Paragraph 3 mean?A、Something that costs a fortune. B、Something impossible to succeed. C、Something drawing public attention. D、Something with an uncertain outcome.(2)、What is Barkley Griffith's attitude to Bennett's post-operation condition?A、Negative. B、Cautious. C、Optimistic. D、Uncaring.(3)、What is the text mainly about?A、The heated debate over the pig heart transplant. B、David Bennett's contribution to medical research. C、The first experimental pig heart transplant in the world. The most important life lesson I've learned from running is to run at my own pace. This lesson has guided me in many ways. In particular, it made me challenge the fixed expectations of retirement and aging.
Running is a metaphor (隐喻) for life. I realized this while training for a marathon to celebrate my 60th birthday. All the other runners being faster than me made me embarrassed, but my coach shared some valuable advice: run at your own best pace — setting a goal or target time could be a limitation. He was right. Over time I ran more easily and faster. I also enjoyed the experience much more.
I have applied this principle to other areas of my life. Finding a rhythm is not about efficiency or how many things I can get done in a day. It has more to do with what I decide to do at this stage in my life. Running carries its own set of expectations, including what people at certain life stage should be doing or not doing. Expectations at my age can center on how leisure time is spent, decisions about employment, and even the role of a grandparent.
I used to think it was young people who bore the impact of peer pressure, but older adults can experience it too. This is ironic, because often later in this life is a time when we tend to care less about the opinions of others.
I'm not suggesting we postpone dreams. Of course, we should do what matters to us, but it's easy to view retirement as another occupation with benchmarks (基准) to be met. It's a comparison trap that makes what someone else does the reference point.
Forget what others are doing. Their pace is not necessarily the pace you should run at. Run at your own way. Our bodies know what they need. Our hearts know what they need. In living life on our own terms, we will likely feel stronger in body, mind and spirit.
(1)、What motivated the author to participate in marathon?A、Her keen wish to celebrate her 60th birthday. B、Her strong curiosity for fighting against aging. C、Her eager interest in doing regular exercise. D、Her urgent need to enhance her health and mind.(2)、What do the underlined words "this principle" in paragraph 3 probably refer to?A、Setting a target time. B、Finding your limitation. C、Enjoying your decisions. D、Running at your own pace.(3)、What does the author think of peer pressure?A、Its impact is only limited to young generations. B、Even senior citizens cannot avoid it completely. C、Its existence is too ridiculous to explain. NPR's Student Podcast (播客) Challenge is back — for a fifth year! This year's competition will open for entries on September 6, 2023 and close on October 28.
As in past years, our judges will choose winners in two categories: grades five through eight and grades nine through twelve. Entries must be submitted by an educator or a student leader who's 18 years old or older. Another important rule is that the maximum length of your podcast is within eight minutes, and longer entries will be disqualified.
Our judges will use the following criteria to narrow down and choose the winners:
Information and structure, 40 percent
Does the podcast tell a good story or teach us something new and important? Is it structured in a way that keeps listeners engaged? Can we easily follow the story you're telling or the information you're explaining? Have you spent time cutting out unnecessary information to make sure the main ideas come through clearly?
Personality and creativity, 40 percent
Does it have personality, or does it sound like you're reading from a script (脚本)? Does it make us laugh or cry or leave us deep in thought?
Production, 20 percent
We're not judging you on how fancy your equipment is and we don't expect you to be an expert on recording and editing sound, but we hope you'll try.
Some podcasts may use a narration format. Others may be more of an interview format. If you use sound apart from interviews and narration, make sure it is clear and smooth.
