Chinese teenager Quan Hongchan won the gold medal for the women's 10-meter platform diving at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Thursday.

Quan is the youngest of 431 athletesChina sent to Tokyo for the Olympics. If the Games had gone on as scheduled last summer, she would have been too young(meet) the minimum age (14) to compete in the diving competition. Now, she's made Olympic history.

Each of Quan's dives was the highest of the five rounds of competition at the 10-meter platform. Two scored perfect 10s from all seven(judge). Only one judge found a flaw (瑕疵) with her final dive,(award) her a 9.5 next to six 10s. But it didn't count, becausediving's scoring system. The two highest and two(low) scores are thrown out and multiplied by the dive's degree of difficulty. I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed. I have started to think about other people sinceI think about myself. I am happy that I am becoming a 1 person.

It is necessary but difficult for English beginners to memorize new words, and long lists of words seem to make the mission impossible. They are puzzled why they try to memorize words with great efforts but forget them easily. That's why there are often inquiries about how to memorize new words.     Here are some tips to help.

__We too often separate the process of new words memorization from pronunciation. In fact, these two can be combined and each will enhance the other. Saying the word to ourselves helps activate aural(hearing) memory, which helps the memory.     The more familiar we are with the word, the greater chance we will have to keep it for the rest of our life.

Never memorize single English words.  Relate the word to terms we already know, either as synonym or antonym. For example, the word "gargantuan" is similar in meaning to words "gigantic", ＂huge" and "large". Make a sequence of words: "small, medium, large, gigantic, and gargantuan".

Create a mental image of the word that involves strong emotions. Think, "The gargantuan whale is going to swallow me whole".

Learning English words requires action. Complaining how difficult it is to memorize new words will be of little help.  Have a try with ten words a day and you will see what a difference you will make in our English learning.

Have you ever said to a friend "That rose's smell is really sweet!", only to find that your friend can't smell anything at all?

According to a study published in the journal PNAS in May, people have different abilities to recognize certain odors (气味) — and it's linked to different genes.

For the study, 300 people were placed among 150 jars with different odors. At a given time, they had to smell an odor and then rate the intensity (强度) and pleasantness of the odor on a scale from 1 (extremely weak/unpleasant) to 7 (extremely strong/pleasant). Before they left, the participants needed to leave a blood sample.

After comparing genes of the participants, researchers found all had different smelling abilities and that the differences between these abilities could be traced to certain genes.

According to The New York Times, human beings have nearly 400 genes that directly control receptors (器官) and influence the way these receptors become active.

"Odors ... turn on specific receptors, which then tells us if we're smelling a flower, how strong we find it, and whether we like it," said Casey Trimmer, a geneticist and the lead author of the study. "One small change in the gene for the receptor can change its shape and how well the odor fits, thereby changing the awareness of the odor."

Though genes play a decisive role in our ability to smell, other factors, including attention, past associations and expectations, are important as well. For example, if we love the smell of roses, we are drawn to their smell and pay special attention to it.

But what does our different abilities to sense odors mean?

"Smelling is the most important sense for the rest of the animal kingdom," said Trimmer. Although, unlike other animals, humans aren't any longer dependent on their sense of smell to find food or detect danger, smell is still a significant sense. There is also evidence that a reduced sense of smell is an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease.
